Francoise Conley everything I see or think of a wire hanger I say that phrase and of course my grown boys look at me like I’m crazy. Because we do use plastic. Just learning about wooden ones. But think it’s kinda a funny but sad too. Crazy movie.

I think it is hard for some people to get rid of things because we grew up poor. It is very hard to break habits that you learned that are supposed to save money. So, you hold on to it thinking you will use it again. But, you don't. Nice video, thanks.

Mr. Causey mine too. Personally, i look at what i have not used in the past year. And think why. If it is a special dress thing, maybe keep it. If you still like it but havent worn it lately, then wear it that or the next day if you dont / end up hating it, get rid of it

    • @genli5603
      @genli5603 6 років тому +16

If you want to save money, you do it by not buying things. When you keep things you don’t use, you’re just trying not to think about the money you spent. Self honesty requires getting rid of the extraneous things and looking hard before you buy! You don’t need to get rid of all the clothes you might not wear in a year (I have 20 plus year old pack boots that I never wear if it doesn’t snow a lot that year, but when it does, I loooove them!), but you should be using things when you have the opportunity to do so. If you pass them over, you’re done with them.

One time when I cleaned my room and was able to see the floor, I realized that empty places in my room also looks very beautiful and soothing to my mind. Yes, not always we need things to enjoy. Some time just like silence, vacant place / area in the room can bring joy and satisfaction

funny story: we call single socks "orphan socks", my boyfriend has all black socks so whenever one sock has a hole, he trows it out and keeps the other sock (thus making it an orphan sock) until he has a hole again in another sock. the newly formed pair is called "adopted socks"

I donate my magazines to nursing homes and women's shelter.
I'm not a minimalist but everything has a place. Rule of thumb. .. if something new comes in... something old goes out.

Dear Melissa you have totally changed my life watching your videos taught me to deal with clutter and specially sentimental clutter. And after 40 years of my life I have been able to get rid of all the clutter in my home and life. Thanks to you. And still I can't stop watching you. And I have made it my habit, to purge things at end of every month, so after six months deep cleaning n purging I have less work to do. You have really changed my life. Thanks a lot. And many congratulations to you and your hubby for the new baby coming to brighten up your lives. Love you n love to baby 😘😘😘

Paper clutter is the worst thing for me to manage. A piece of paper doesn't take up much space, so when paper clutter gathers up, it takes forever to clean up. I need to build a habit of dealing with papers right away.

Aleksandra Miglowiec use the three check mark rule. A red check mark in a top corner when you look at it and decide you need to keep it. Another when you review it in one of the piles. And a third when you know it has to be dealt with or be gone. The third one is redundant but once you actually do that little tick mark it looks like you have handled it too many times. And, always recycle envelopes and junk mail immediately. No need to keep those ever.

Paper clutter is the worst I literally have bags of it and alot of it needs to be shredded so I'm grabbing it out of bags the stuff that needs to be shredded goes into a small box the rest in the trashcan. I managed to eliminate everything in a 2 drawer file cabinet the file cabinet is downstairs and being used for storing my tools and misc items.

Despite not having read a book in five years, my husband has a dusty personal library installed on his bedside table. Beside his designer watch collection. Which is perched next to his impressive “ode to all the limited edition plastic cups I’ve gotten at Blue Jays games.” Basically what I’m saying is my biggest source of clutter in my bedroom is my husband. My nightstand drawer is organized to the nth degree, and we’re not even sure what colour the surface if his nightstand is. Opposites attract, but my opposite is giving me grey hair!

Hi Melissa! This is perfect timing - I'm working on decluttering/reorganizing my home right now - and specifically my bedroom. My thing that needs to go are a bunch of clothes that don't fit me anymore - I REALLY like them - they aren't out of style, and I spent a lot of money on them, so...I have them in boxes on the shelf in my closet. I KNOW I need to get rid of them, but I just can't!

My husband and I have always hated hanging onto stuff with no real purpose except for the "someday we might" purpose. We have been decluttering regularly for years. Even so, when we downsized last year, we sold, donated, threw away so much stuff. Amazing! Now, when need to store something we remind ourselves that the idea isn't to store stuff but to have less stuff to store.

  • @gpigsrock

I know this is an older video, but the hanger bit inspired me to mention something. I work at a dry cleaners and we have what we call a "Hanger Recycling Program," which is just a fancy way of saying we will accept any of our returned hangers a customer drops off. So those wire hangers that come with shirts and the hangers that have the company logo on it get to be reused, and they're no longer in your closet!
I'm sure not all places do this, but you could certainly ask. Where I work we reuse certain hangers but throw away others (pants hangers with sticky stuff to keep the clothes on them and competitor hangers, mainly), and we sort through them ourselves (though we always appreciate it when a customer drops off hangers that have been securely tied together with rubber bands or twist ties after being organized! You'll definitely be spoken of nicely if you do this ;) ). This only applies to dry cleaner hangers, and the nice ones that come with suits that are sometimes "orphaned" typically go to the employee coat closet, so it you really don't want them you could toss them in with the rest of your hangers, though the staff may ask you if you'd like it back. With plastic hangers from the store you're on your own.
At the very least they may offer to throw your hangers away for you if you bring them in, which would save some space in your trash can at home.

Re old socks. Hi. New to your channel. Love it. I have been watching your videos while giving my kitchen a good clean. Just thought I would mention our use for old socks. I keep a small box by our winter shoes containing a selection of old dark coloured socks for pulling over walking shoes when it’s icy outside. A great way to avoid slipping in the snow. Honestly, believe me, if you live in a cold climate, try it. I always swill them through and thoroughly dry them afterwards before putting them away so they don’t smell and besides, you never know what might be under that snow !. A black pair of socks is almost unnoticeable over black boots or shoes.

Wooden hangers look nicer and are more durable, but the thinner plastic ones take so much less space. I don't have a wardrobe room, just a small closet for my things, and I actually got rid of the wooden hangers in order to have my clothes more organized, because hanging them up is always better than folding them. They're all matched though, which makes it look neat.

Junk bags corners and draws galore. It's usually the stuff that's left over at the end of an attempted decluttering session which becomes overwhelming I think I want to keep it but I don't know where to put it. It's so emotionally draining to sort that I usually end up hiding it away.

Great tips. One thing I do is, I have a specific number of hangers in my wardrobe....one piece of clothing hanging on each, whenever something new goes in, something has to come out to open room...and i do that quite a lot cuz I love shopping for clothes....this way I always wear everything I have and it helps me to be more charitable. Same goes for linens, a new set comes in, an old set goes out.

I am dealing with a little different situation that has brought on huge clutter in my BR. Long story short: Some dear friends moved in with me after the husband was in a car accident that left him a quadriplegic. My home is very accessible. SO, I gave them my (more accessible) bedroom, and I moved into another bedroom. This room was already cluttered with my 26 year old daughter's stuff that she left behind. On top of that, I had to move MY stuff into the BR. Ugh! It is so embarrassing! I keep the door closed!!! I also am unable to walk well because of a knee problem. I thought of asking a friend to help me, but everyone I know is so busy , I hate to ask them.

so glad you don't advocate just throwing out the single socks/holey socks but find a second life for them before they hit the dumpster. I have to admit, the single socks I do tend to hang on to though, because I just KNOW the mate is going to turn up one day!!

I am so excited for y’all, and girl you are carrying that precious bundle completely in front of you! I was robbed of the maternity clothes I was looking forward to because he wedged himself up under my ribs. I was 7mo along before I had to “resort” to not buttoning my jeans! Clear robbery!
I’m about to bleach all my old pillows and donate them to the animal shelter, same thing we do with old towels, blankets, comforters and sheets. And the declutter next on my list is going through pictures and art on my walls! Woohoo!

Sock singles party! LOL I'm tossing stuff left and right and decluttering in the office as well as at home. I have 6 junk drawers around the house and I'm slowly decreasing my junk drawer to 1 and then NONE! I love that candle display that's under your TV! its so pretty and barely takes up space. Thanks for the tips and that tie holder is very nice, I should get one for my boyfriend as a gift. Oh do you have a video on how to clean ties?

Good video. Something helpful would be how to dispose of certain items, such as pillows. When de-cluttering, I always get hung up on the items that don't fit into one of the following categories: re-cycle, re-gift, re-purpose or serious trash. Thanks.

Decluttering my home is so difficult I grew up in a home where both my grandmother and father are hoarders and it was the norm for me for 17 years , my nan never got me to clean anything so I’ve become dependent on UA-cam to learn how to clean and declutter but I’m slowly getting there 😁

Pretty much everything you advice I have done. Like thin plastic hangers, take up less space. Or the black felt material kind. 2 junk drawers in kitchen. Hubby uses one of his dresser drawers for gadgets, and his nightstand with 2 drawers and our walk in closet for gadgets and small tools. What I would love to get rid of is gadgets.

Employing the rule of having a specific place for "junk," or clutter, then tidying those spaces more frequently. Making choices between living with less or elevating the routine of when items are used, where they are when I need them! Catching up!

This winter season i got upset about how many clothes i had. I am not one to purchase tons of new clothes. I decided to get rid of all of my summer clothes!! This was to make more space in my room and i can easily get “new” clothes at clothes swaps etc. no need to keep cheap summer clothes year after year!
