that1cameraguy you really need to check the firmware version on the Rokinon. Pre firmware 32, any kind of backlight situation would cause it to hunt and freeze. Eye-AF was very inconsistent as well. Firmware 32 solved all that issues. No more freezing and Eye-AF is excellent now in the dark!

Really good job with the comparisons. I just used the 55mm Zeiss last night for a shoot and I also own the Sigma (Canon mount). You're right...I think the Zeiss 55 is the best middle ground lens and it's dead silent. I think this video will become the new reference standard for anyone looking into SONY 50mm lenses. Your hard work will surely be rewarded!

Wow this video is incredible!!! So super helpful and touches on everything. Thank you so much! There are a lot of videos on UA-cam comparing one or two lenses but this is the only video that compares every single lens and ranks them not only overall but also on a per feature basis, wow! I’ve been looking for lenses for my A7III and want to slowly build up a good set of primes, but it’s hard to figure out just which one would be the best for each focal length. I really hope you will be able to do a similar comparison of say all 35mm’s, all 85mm’s, etc. So glad I subscribed to you :)

Loved your video! I did a similar test and ended up buying... the Loxia 50 f2.0. My findings were that the Sigma was indeed very sharp, even at 1.4 and the Zeiss Sonnar was very close. Despite being 1.8, the latter had much more 3D pop than the Sigma. But in the end, the Loxia had something special to it: the colour cast, the overall rendition and the user experience were just so different. My second pick would be the Zeiss 55. I parted ways with the Sigma.

Agree. I own the 55mm. It is the one I keep on my camera. It works great with my A7III and the A6500. The sharpness of the lens is good enough for me. A huge jump from the cheap 50mm that I sold. The more expensive and faster lens may be sharper but I don’t like the added weight. I can easily carry the Zeiss 55mm in one hand for a very long time.

all of these lenses are perfectly sharp for me. its really hard to notice which is critically sharper unless you do a lot of pixel peeping. but the rokinon/samyang caught my attention because, while it may be the 'softest' of the bunch, it also has the creamiest and smoothest bokeh which in my opinion will make portraits more dramatic rather than critical sharpness. i know it would have been more difficult but i had hoped that the bokeh test done with an actual person for better perspective since portraiture and subject separation is a huge factor for buying a nifty fifty. looks like the rokinon/samyang is an amazing value for money for just $500 and a good balance between size and weight.

Great review! I have the 50/1.4 Zeiss and it's probably the best lens I have ever used. a7riv and 50 are incredible together. just bought the 24mm 2.8 Samyang five months ago and updated to latest firmware and have had the same experience where it just freezes. I have to turn off the a7riv and A9 and it usually starts working again. Never had any issues with 50/1.4 Zeiss or any other Sony/Zeiss lenses. I am considering the Tamron 70-180/2.8 but cannot to have such glitches.

I have used the Sony/Zeiss 55mm f1.8 for a couple of years. That lens is remarkable because balancing performance with size, weight, and price makes it a stand out choice. It is 2nd to the 50 1.4 at a pixel peeping level but at real world viewing the differences are minor and not really visible outside of the 2/3rds aperture difference. 2/3rds of a stop is visible but not a huge difference. It should be pointed out that the performance is comparable to Otus level and lightyears ahead of any of the Canon 50's. I own and use the Otus 55 in Nikon mount so can easily compare in real world pro situations. The Otus is fantastic for critical studio work but less satisfying outdoors because of size, weight, and manual focus constraints. On EF mount the Sigma Art is such a better performing lens than Canon and the only advantage Canon has is price, size, and weight. In the Sony system the Sigma has no great advantages since the 50 1.4 performs a little better and the 55 1.8 is a lot lighter, and smaller, with better autofocus and so much more fun to use while being very close in sharpness etc.
The 55mm 1.8 is not the cheapest lens on the planet, but its price point for performance has got to be one of the best value lenses available on any platform and focal length. I am always blown away by the look of the images. Fantastic contrast/sharpness and the lens is tiny. On the street is is an incredibly discreet lens/camera combo. It is Leica-like in that it has that Leica ideal of small size with high performance, but here it does one better than Leica in that it also has fast autofocus. It does have one downside. The lens hood comes off relatively easily. That bugs me, but I put up with it because in every other department the lens is such a pleasure to own and use. I would choose it over the 50 1.4 and the Sigma Art every time. Highly recommended.

Gustavo Ibarra honestly, it is the best 50mm on market! Yesterday, I received my long awaited 24mm GM lens and while it is great and all the construction of 50mm Zeiss is WAY better! The aperture ring can’t even be compared to GM line. Everything feels plasticity on GM if compared. I still love it just like my other GM lenses but to answer your question the Zeiss is just as great IQ-wise as GM and better construction wise. If you want the best just get it, there is no need to watch another review.

Thanks bro. I’ve been waiting for this video for quite sometime now.
I bought the Sigma and it’s razor sharp. But the size and weight was a concern as I normally lug my 70-200 GM and my 16-35 GM too.
I than bought the 55 at a really good price, albeit 2nd hand, and it was LIGHT.
I was ready to rid my Sigma. Put it on for sale but as I was reviewing some of the shots from my sigma again... my heart was found waivering. I love the sharpness, and at 1.4, sometimes the additional light in lower light areas as compared with the 1.8 helps a lot.
So now... I might just keep BOTH !!! Arghhhh.
    God help me.

I have the Sony Zeiss 50 1.4 and it is the best and favorite lens that I have for my A9 and A7R3. Awesome sharpness, bokeh, and build quality. I also still have the 50 1.8 which I bought a while back while I was transitioning to Sony from my Nikon gear and while it is a good bang for your buck lens and would serve you in good stead, it does not compare with the 1.4. The zeiss 1.4 is heavy but I use it as my walk around lens. It's still very much lighter than my Nikon D4s which I still have, which used to be my walk around camera😁 great review Danny, I appreciate the effort you put in to it.

Hi Danny! First off thank for making this video. This was a question I'd been struggling over and I'm in no position to rent all these lenses. I was curious about the fact your shutter speed varies between some of the tests and lenses. Might not this have an effect on sharpness due to possible camera shake? Is this variable not a factor in these tests? Thanks!

You've made the right choice. That 55mm is amazing. Quality wise, it's obviously not the best, but it's still excellent...and when you add it's less than 300g, the competition is over. Everyone should choose the 55. I've sold mine two years ago when I quite Sony, and now that I'm back with sony, it's a pain to find one at a good price. If you want a 85mm, the 85mm1.8 from Sony is imho, the right choice (quality/price/weight)

I swapped my 50 1.8 + $400 for the 55 1.8, but i've made more than 500 bucks renting out the 50 1.8, so if you really think about it. I broke even. lol. I have the 85 1.8 and also love that lens! My absolute favorite and the lens that's always on my camera is my 35 zeiss 1.4 though. Ridiculously sharp and great bokeh.

Thanks for the info John Bato! Weird, my lens has a silver mount but it's written only ZEISS on the front. All of the videos I see on UA-cam show a pink-ish mount with Carl Zeiss written on it. Wonder if Sony has made improvements on the inside....

First time I've seen the Z55 1.8 ranked in the middle of a group of comparable lenses for sharpness.

Also how sharp is the 85mm 1.8 FE lens compared to the 50mm 1.4 Ziess??? I may skip the 50mm all together and roll with the Batis 25 and 85mm 1.8.

Excellent review the size and form factor of the sony 55mm is the deal breaker for me.

After selling my A6500 and getting the A7III I am on way very tight budget this year. So besides the FF kit lens I was able to get the Sony 50/1.8 at Best Buy open box for $150. With my testing anything in the sun is a fringing nightmare at 1.8. It gets better at 2.8 and that is the lowest I go with the lens. Not the best but hey, I got that new A7III LOL

19:55 That’s called truncated bokeh, I believe it happens when the first curtain shutter is set to electronic instead of mechanical (it’s only visible at super high shutter speeds).

Really good review, what about micro contrast? Would think it's probably be the Zeiss lenses base on history of Zeiss older generation of glasses. Currently using a Sony A6000 with Sigma 35mm along with the kit lense, but thinking about upgrading my Canon equipments to Sony A7iii.

Dude! I haven't even watched the video yet but I'm stoked you did this! Literally last night I was scratching my head and checking out tons of reviews, trying to decide what 50 (or 55)mm I wanted. I'm excited to see how this review turns out.

Awesome...helped me make up my mind 55 1.8 ZA for me. With my last lot of camera gear I made the mistake of buying lenses for max sharpness without considering size and weight.....not a great idea if you mainly shoot landscape and nature.....too darn heavy to haul around LOL :D

Great video...I really don't follow those super heavy tech reviews with Mtf graphs etc...what you gave is just what I was looking for- FWIW, I will go for the 55 1.8, in part as I have an a6000 that was given to me and a mint original, mint A7 R, heaps of resolving power.

Amazing video, usefull for the next 10 years. Thanks so much, i need a step up from my 50 1.8 I'm still hesitating between the art and the 55... I dont do videos but who knows maybe one day. But again i have the 50 1.8 , i could use it for videos and use the art 1.4 for photos. What do u think.

Great review, can I know what is your confidence level in using the 50mm f1.4 AF for video? I have the 55mm f1.8 right now and I am happy with it but I would gladly take a slight downgrade in AF for superior IQ. I'm just not sure how much of a downgrade in AF - as I am a hybrid shooter. Is it useable and reliable? Just not AS good as the 55?

Summations is the best. I’m an amateur with A personality. Down and dirty explanations are best. While you summed it well, it just made me realize that I’m Batis spoiled. Thank you for sharing!!

Nice review, thanks! Don't using 50mm-ish lenses too often, but good to know. Actually I have a really old Minolta 50/1.4 with LA-EA4 and the nifty fifty Sony (got it for 180 USD so couldn't resist ;-)). Found the Minolta being sharper than the Sony from f2.0 upwards and just love the Minolta colour. Even AF ist on the same level with the LAEA. So I wonder why your copy of the Sony 50/1.8 focuses that well...

Looks like your copy of 50mm Rokinon doesn’t have the latest firmware. The focusing definitely takes a big hit without that.

Enormous thank you for this comparison video.
just jumped into sony with an a7riii and a few lenses. i have the FE 50mm f1.8, which i quite like for the price. Got the zeiss 35mm f2.8 ZA, i adore it for the size and the AF speed and IQ. Had to buy some standard zoom, so i went with the zeiss 24-70 f4. IQ is not that stellar from a zeiss branded product, but the af speed and handling is decent. Also bought a MF rokinon 12 f2.8, which i do not know i like it or not. Same samyangish warm tint as in this video and the build quality is somewhat disastrous in my opinion. I was on the fence to buy the rokinon/samyang 50 f1.4. Price seems good for an f1.4, but i now know why thanks to your video. Think i'm going with the zeiss 55mm f1.8.

a good fair review .... I have the samyang (rokinon) 50mm F1.4 .. its autofocus is very hit & miss even with the update .. you can buy it in UK for £350gbp now ...The only thing I do like it for is its bokeh & rendering . Im gonna trade mine in for the 55mm Ziess

Really nice video man! Thank you so much! 17:44 min considering the price tag of 200 US the 50 1.8 FE is damn good! Some chromatic abberations, not as tack sharp but for this price... if you dont zoom in you almost wouldn see any difference besides the outer focus area.. I just got into the Sony System and bought one half price for 130 US for testing purposes. I hope it will deliver same as here. The only downside as I have heard is the AF but I won´t shoot sports with it ;)
