part of this feels like you needed way less food to survive until heroic age because of only making dwarves. other norse gods making more gatherers would need to fight a lot sooner else they get food starved when the chicken/berries/hunt runs out right?

I think you can still make a fair amount of units before you completely run out of food. But the dwarves do make it easier to accumulate 800 food to be sure. However you will also consume a lot more gold in the process. Ideally you don't want to use Dwarven mine in the classical age but in this game Looki did so anyway.
