6:47 The high pitched noises actually come from a synth having it's pitch modulated by a sample & hold module. It's the quintessential "70's sci-fi movie computer beeps", and it's a pretty simple thing to achieve.
I thought it was from an old Nintendo game called "Balloon Fight", but I went to go hear it and it's a little different (but similar).
It reminded me of the intro to Short circuit
It resembles one of the alarm tones from the original Apple iPhone - not sure if that’s the origin of it though
It could be either.
I always assumed it was just a sine/square wave pitched up and arpeggiated.
It would probably sound exactly the same.
6:31 was from the early days of roblox, probably around 2006-2007, when you at the hamburger item it would just say "hamburger"

Tubular bells happens to be The Exorcist theme.
Should be noted the "Lag sound" is actually a Dial-Up Modem's communication tones used during the Data Modulation and Sound Check/Audio Probing/Ranging steps for a process that is called in Telecommunications "The Handshake". The Handshake is a computer procedure by which a variety of audio tones are sent back and forth between two modems to connect to each other from opposite ends of a dial-up telephone connection, to identify each modem to the other, determine what security protocols and algorithms to use, equalize audio volume and pitch between the modems, and determine what are the best audio frequencies to send and receive data to each other over a telephone line with minimum static, echoing, or crosstalk interference from other modems connected to other computers that might be sharing the same line.

Rich NEVER stopped using that intro. He still uses it to this day. Also, Rich has a video where he explains the origins of that sound. He has a best friend called Matt (which he and his audience refer to as "intro guy" due to Rich using a picture of him in his intro, and he's even invited him onto some of his streams and videos in the past) apparently, the skatting is in reference to how Matt would speak whenever he was piss drunk when he and Rich were in college, and the image he uses in his intro is they way he would look at you when he is drunk. Though I do wonder if Rich is aware that his now iconic intro is a meme now?
Also, I HIGHLY reccomend Rich's channel if you're into gaming and tech! He mostly regularly covers gaming and tech news, with the occasional tech review (as his name suggests) here and there. And he also streams daily on his livestream channel RTUStreams! But beware. He does do a lot of dirty humor with his chicken statues and figures he has lying around. (His 'birds' as he calls them) Its his own special brand of humor. But its understandabke if that's not your cup of tea.
the "nope'' meme, where an object moving in a direction usualy takes a 180 turn comes from the engineer class in team fortress 2
I recall a time where the pinnacle of humour was said character's neck extending.
I think its when u press z and then 8. Because, it will make your class say no, and i heard that from the engine by doing that once
Is that a elite sniper 0-0-5
No it doesn’t, it’s from Tetris
@@DEFxRECON I think you'll find it's from Sonic Adventure 2.
"AOL's Dial Up Connection"
No it was literally every dial up connection, the reason it made that noise is because the computer would "talk" to the phone line to make a connection through it. All the beeps, tones and static you hear is the computer saying to the phone line "please let me connect to the internet."
"No"

That yell is fucking iconic. Love it.
6:03 comes from the episode Mama Luigi from the Super Mario World cartoon from the 90’s when Luigi gets crushed by a skewer.
Bro... the level of research and effort this guy put in to find all this stuff is on the same level of a historian doing a historical research project!!!! Kudos to this guy
From what I've seen, I'm certain that the beeping sound, which you referred to as somebody mashing a MIDI keyboard quickly, actually being a sorting algorithm. They are also the sources for other meme-ish sorting algorithms for their bizarre sounding nature and crazy un-scrambling. The sorting algorithm sounds are on the site and can be found via searching.
Also, sorting algorithm sounds are used typically for incomprehensible animations or several shape-shifting, or something. They are also used for fast talking people and otherwise impossible things.
it sounded to me like a sorting algorithm visualization too
Ye same
Personally I'm guessing it's a synthesizer sound using white noise and a sample-and-hold circuit. Those modules can be used to generate random pitches from a synth.
I was gonna write the same
@@dankmemes3447 what about the video with a guy falling and spilling his beans and says "oh no, my beans"?
Having never actually played Minecraft in any capacity, I wasn't aware that the pain sound effect was actually taken out of the game!
It actually kinda upset me to not hear Steve make that noise when he gets ko'd in Smash Bros.
OOUH!
so far as i remember, the sound didn't make it out of the beta of the game, and isn't the current hurt sound
Well, that's even more upsetting. That sound is iconic!
you can make a soundpack to make the damage noise whatever you want in minecraft
It survived in the Pocket Edition for a long time, don't know if or when they changed it there.
The femur breaker scream comes from a pc horror game called scp containment breach. You half to break someone’s femur to recontain scp 106. The point of the game is to survive in an scp facility known as Site-19. The game is after the scp wiki. The fart with reverb is from the old Mario Bros show, Luigi gets crushed and it makes that exact noise
The reverb fart's unmodified version is most likely from a sound library. The earliest usage of the sound I know comes from Conker's Bad Fur Day, dating back to 2001.
The “Vine Boom” is literally just a car door closing with reverb and bass boosting. You’re welcome.
On closer inspection, that seems highly plausible
No it's from a sound effect pack by Bluezone Corporation called Cinematic Impacts.
fr? source?
no, it's just steel sounds
The "Quick Fart" sound effect was used in Mama Luigi: ua-cam.com/video/BJs2auMVm50/v-deo.html

6:46 That's actually the sound of a sorting algorithm sorting values where each value represents a different pitched tone.

Could've sworn it was from a spongebob episode.

@@willfiguex1 I know so.
Actually the "Reverb fart" comes from an unknown list of funny and fart sound effects. That particular sound it's called "The hairy truck driver fart". I think the first appearance here on UA-cam of that sound was in 2007, a video called "FART SOUNDS" uploaded by the user "Heix360". I remember a lot of UA-cam videos using that sound effect before it was used on memes.
Idk if it was the original, but I remember hearing it in a video of someone farting into the intercom at a big box store, and that was before the sound was popular. So, maybe it originated there, who knows. I know there are a lot of fake versions of people imitating that video now.
"The hairy truck driver fart"? What the fuck is this name and why does it makes it sound accurate?
6:30 The hamburger one reminds me of pink panther but slowed down. The scene where Steve martins character is learning to speak certain English phrases
The "High-Pitch Noises" sounds like an effect you can get from a synthesizer with white noise fed into a Sample-and-Hold circuit and the output is used to modulate the pitch within a range of random values.
Fun Fact: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 1 was inspired by Fist of the North Star.
ok
And so are the Stand rushes.
yeah, it's pretty obvious if you look at the manga

I think the “ding” at the end was also a built-in sound effect in Windows 95/2000/XP. You could choose it as one of many for notifications on things like incoming emails.
You forgot to mention that the actor who played Zeed (The character that said "NANI?") in the Hokuto No Ken meme was Eiji Kanie. He sadly died in 1985 due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage. The characters that he played got replaced by different actors shortly after his death.
The "AOL" noise was not exclusive to AOL. It is the sound of dial-up modems communicating with each other in frequencies so low they are audible to the human ear. If someone was using dial up in the house, picking up a landline phone at the same time would let you hear the line communications (which was busy because it was being used for machine communications and not for voice to make a call).

6:20 i found the same sound effect in the first Cars movie, when mater and McQueen were in the field of sleeping tractors
2:57 : Another thing I've found: The visual part of the meme with the laughing skeleton and explosions is actually from snippits of the music video of Pearl Jam's - Do the Evolution. Good song btw.
6:03 : Found. Soundelux, People Humans - Human Voices And Sounds, Farts. The reverb sounds like it came from Audacity, and I can probably figure out how to replicate it.
Thanks for including the "wet fart" sound because so many people have dubbed that sound into videos pretending that the person actually farted, but it's always the same SFX.
7:04 that is used in a lot of reality TV shows for drama
How the fuck...
Thank you Mr. Gr33nguy this was very helpful. I learned a lot from this video. It really helped open my eyes on meme culture as a whole.
"I am going to be Switzerland" also uses the opening of "On Sight."

This isn't specific to AOL. This is exactly what you would hear if you had a speaker attached to any computer modem while communicating over a dial-up connection. Any modem on any dial-up service would make this sound.

The reverb fart is as simple as it gets. It’s a royalty free stock sound effect with a filter applied to it.
6:23 it sounds like the fnaf sound lmaoooo
i’ve heard the fart sound in movies from the 90’s and 2000’s
The "Nope" sound effect used in older memes is a sound effect in Team Fortress 2 that is said by Engineer (voice chat z+7 I think)
The vine boom sound effect is from a pack of generic industrial boom sound effects called "Industrial Samples and Impacts" by Bluezone Corporation
3:05 WHAT THE FU-

I think the quick fart actually comes from soundbible and I think it's called "Rasberry". That isn't a spelling error. That's the actual name. The fart with reverb actually has some of the sound effect cut off before adding the reverb, much like most disappearing memes.
I found out the actually name of it is "Blowing a Raspberry" and is by someone named Paula, but because of how low quality it is, I'm not completely sure if it's the original.
You're telling me that Vine Boom, literally the most iconic meme sound effect to date, has no known origin???
I follow channels that breakdown songs with samples and their origins, so I am a very happy to find a channel that does it for meme sfx
"Messiah"? Now, there's a game I'd never think I'd hear of again.
6:47 I’m 100% sure that sound comes from a “dog whistle” app that can be set to random high frequencies
Ha! I have that app, but there are more low pitches when you do that so I don’t think it’s that.
Im also sure too. When i was in high school everybody would use that app the play the whistle slider really fast and it sounded exactly like that.
CJ from groove street
Sounds a lot like the Sonic theme song
If I’m not mistaken, I think the “Quick Fart” sound effect actually originated from Shrek. As it is commonly used throughout the franchise, and in the first film, you can hear it in the beginning montage (the scene that All Star is heard) when Shrek jumps into the pond to bathe. The sound effect is slightly muffled due to it occurring under water but they sound almost the same.
its like a minigame, seeing how many of these i know the story behind

The fart sound effect can also be heard in a Russian meme audio called звуки пук (it’s also on youtube). IDK where THAT came from but it used to be a meme among schoolchildren during the flip-phone era.
7:20 HOLY SHIT jc3 music
6:03 contrary to popular belief, this sound is from a movie called "The Nutty Professor". The old man "cleanses" his colon and makes this sound.
the "vine boom" is probably from a compilation of epic trailer sound effects, various companies did those although I'm not very familiar with them. The meme/Shrek fart and the ding were probably from a more common sound effects library like those from Sound Ideas and The Hollywood Edge.
It's from a video titled "Industrial Samples and Impacts, Boom Sound Effects, Metallic Sounds for Trailers, Film and More." so indeed from a sound effect compilation.
7:06 fun fact, the background music for this part is from Just Cause 3 the game.

I think it's more likely to be a hardware synthesizer's sample & hold feature (S&H). S&H modules have been around since at least the 60's with the Moog modulars, so tracking the exact source could be tricky.
6:25 "Hamburger" is _possibly_ taken from the movie "Nice Dreams" starring Cheech and Chong, where a guy says "you're the guy from the hamburger train, right?". This was also sampled at the beginning of the Primus song "Hamburger Train".

The reverbed fart is a very common fart sound effect used in movies, shows, etc. The one in Shrek 2 is the exact same one just not reverbed. It's also a very old sound considering it was used in that movie.
