    I think this is why some people rely on the old school Mills Magic Rose mix - it has the alfalfa, the fish meal, and a bunch of other things that can be found in a organic rose fertilizer..
    Black spot is a real problem here even with DA roses with “excellent” disease resistance so I avoid foliage feeds - that I can appreciate to some sounds like paranoia
    IMHO The hardest thing about organic rose fertilizers is not deciding on one but how often to use it and how much to use (ie feed but not over feed). I go with the old school strategy for repeat flowering shrub roses - feed once in early spring and once after first flush. But I do know people who apply a small amount monthly after the early spring feed….

      Just like you, Emma, I make my life easy: I fertilize twice a growing season with slow release rose fertilizer and leave it up to rose to figure it out. Thank you and happy gardening!

    So very interesting, the geek in me loved hearing all this information on soil amendments/fertilizer.
    Decided that once my fish fertilizer supply runs out I will give the alfalfa meal a try.
    I do not need worm castings because I have lots of earthworms working away in my soil but when I amend soil for a new bed that could be very helpful. My dad told me that where I’m
    gardening is actually the worst soil on the property, our house was newly built in 2013.
    I’ve never really understood why people say fish emulsion is stinky. (I live in farm country.) Mine never stinks super bad after I diluted it… it must all come down to what you are used too. 🤷🏽‍♀️
    I really enjoyed the little clips you added from last year’s garden. So pretty. This past weekend I got my first roses from David Austin. My 3rd Olivia and 2nd Emily Brontë 😃😌 I was outside mulching and cleaning up around the peonies that just popped thro. Excited to see they all made it thro the winter

      Lovely spring, right? We are all going to be happy busy watching our plants grow! And congratulations on your new roses, those two have good disease resistance.

    Can definitely vouch for fish emulsion. We have a one gallon Alaska container and use it almost exclusively for our roses. Also, great for after transplanting anything in the garden.

      That fish emulsion is great, my plants respond so well to it too!

    Such a great video, and excellent timing! Thank you. 😊 I wonder, have you ever heard of Great Big Roses? It's organic and the company claims it improves the microbes in the soil. I wonder if it really works and if it is any better than cheaper soil amendments, like compost.

      Hi Lindsay, I didn’t test their product. My personal opinion is that there are different ways to achieve great soil health, theirs is just one of them. It all comes down to what each gardener prefers to use.

    Hi Olga! Thank you very much for the informative video. My native country is Bulgaria and when I was little we also grew alfalfa to feed the farm animals. Funny, I didn't know the English word for it until I saw your video. :) I would like to ask you something. Do you know if Espoma Rose Tone is a slow release fertilizer? I've always wondered about this, as it is not mentioned anywhere on the label or in the manufacturers website. I use this one to feed my roses and I am very happy with the results. I feed them once every month throughout the growing season. :)

      Hi Nadeto, Espoma Rose Tone is natural slow release. I use it, very convenient. I do feed only twice a year, since our Connecticut summer is somewhat short. Happy gardening!

    Hi Olga, Very helpful video. I always use organic fertilizers only. Some of my roses have grown lots of new leaves. Should I apply Jobe’s organic fertilizer for roses now or should I wait until the last frost date, which is April 23rd? Please advice.

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  Рік тому +1

      Give your roses that fertilizer, your plants are actively growing.

    Hi Olga how are you? Got all the DA roses for this year. Can’t wait to put them in ground they are in water. Just wanted to know how long I can put them in water? Thanks! I am in 6b MA

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  Рік тому +1

      I see people keeping them in water for many day. I get nervous about that. I usually keep mine overnight, and if can’t plant then, then I heal them in soil.
