Ginseng seed stratification

- Forest farmer, Dave Carmen, demonstrates how to stratify ginseng seed. Unlike many plants, ginseng seed requires two winters before it will germinate. In order to store the seed safely during the first year and provide for its first cold treatment, it must be buried in the ground and kept moist. Dave Carmen digs up a mesh bag with the previous year's seed that is now ready for planting in the fall in order to germinate the following spring. This year's seed collection must be fermented in water which removes the pulp, washed and then buried with sand in the mesh bag to wait out its first winter.
I just inspected the 100 seeds I stratified using this method. 53 floaters (bad) and 47 good. I think that is a excellent germination rate. The seeds are broke and some have a small stem coming out. Good to go. Thanks!😃👍👍👍
I keep finding Ginseng all over my property. Lots of three prong and some two prong. My first thought was to just keep them growing! I can only guess that they are about 5-10 years old. The stocks are about 10-14 inches from the surface. I really enjoy Ed watching this video and I'm going to use what I saw here. Thank you for the lesson.
Thanks for your comment, it's wonderful to hear you have it growing. You can also visit wildamericanginseng.org for more about ginseng specifically.
wonderfully informative. thank you!
Very helpful in understanding the process. Thank you
Glad you found this to be useful!
Now the challenge is keeping hunters out of your planting site.
Need to start from start and go to finish. To much back and forth for me, or i missed something
How long after you stratified them do they take to sprout? Is it like an ordinary seed at that point or does it take time as well
Thank you!
Good....
So if i buy stratified seeds an plant them in fall will there be sucess rate in spring for sprouting
After you separate the floating seeds with the sinking seeds. You let sinking seed dry, on the surface, do you have to plant them right away? How much time do you think you have till you go bad?
I ordered some seeds, but they seem very dry, how can I tell if there viable seeds? I've heard I can soak them for a bit and see which ones sink. But how long should I let them soak?
It` not the same thing if I keep the seeds a few days, or even weeks in sand in the refrigerator?
Thank you
it worked for me, but I used a baggy with some water in it, still took several months to see them sprouting in the baggy
After stratifying ginseng how long does it take him to come up if you plant green it takes two winners if they're stratified how long does it take him to come up
Hi there, unstratified ginseng seeds can take 18 months or longer to come up! With stratification, seeds are collected and stored and protected for a period of time, so they take less time to grow when planted.
What color are the seeds when u prep for straitified
i would like this ginseng seed demostration in kenya
Me too
What type of ginseng are shown? I have Peruvian Ginseng seeds, do they need Stratification as well?
I had mine sprout from being in the fridge wet in a baggy after 9 months - think of stratification as sending a signal to the seed, Ginseng needs that signal of being cold and wet for months
whats the defference of starifield and stratification
scarification is slightly abrading the seed, stratification is undergoing the required resting period of the seed (one winter or two winters). Some people do it in their fridge.
so you leave it in the sand 2 years
In sand, underground of similar damp and cold conditions, for 2 years.
Jacob Tiffin that is incorrect. You only need it in the ground for two winters. Bury them in fall, then comes winter, spring, summer, fall (this is one year underground), then the second winter, and finally in spring you dig them up. Not quite two years. He says so in the video, watch it again.
