    What happens when you take too much gear with you, including multiple Sony camera bodies, lenses, a drone, a gopro, and a phone, to a tropical island in the Indian Ocean? So I brought my Sony A7c2, with multiple lenses, my ZV-E1, my GoPro, my DJI mini 2, and my Google Pixel 8 Pro to a small African nation… but I’ll be focusing on my Sony cameras as I trek across to various locations with photo, video, and some POV beach shooting, so if you are planning your next trip abroad!

    First, great video.
    Second, the beard game is on point.
    Third, who was the woman you took photos of? She was stunning!
    Lastly, the amount of work you put into this video...a thankless task.
    I love to see these videos from you because I get to see you walk around and explore, which is right up my alley. Also, I saw the montage of all the gear you brought...sheesh! lol. But you are lucky to have those two compact cameras...I really wish I could downsize my A74 and A7s3 to the compact versions...but would need to order from the States...Maybe I'll buy one of yours! hahaah. I actually sold a lot of my stuff! I think I'm going to sell one or two more lenses and keep the Sony 14mm, 35mm, and 135. Honestly, those are all I use these days. the 20 and 90 are gone, and soon the 24 will be as well. I found that I can do a lot more with a lot less. Plus, carrying all that gear while traveling is a pain! I'm interested to see which body you decide to sell!

      Thank you, for all this (especially the beard compliment... Winter's almost over, so it's almost time to bring my face back out of hibernation though)!
      The woman in the photos, that I will be featuring in my Nikon ZF video and I'm hoping to take more pics of in the future is a friend who was our baby sitter that I'm trying to convince to get into modeling as she's never done it before.
      It would be interesting to compare the a7s3 and a74 to the zve1 and A7Cii in cumulative weight and size... To see what you're actually saving, space wise. It might be negligible or it might be a big difference, I don't know.
      Woah, you sold the 20 and 90!!! But I totally get that, "doing more with less". I'm hoping to get to that realization too!
      I should sell one camera body and pick up a 24-70 f2.8 instead...

    Great video. Love the footage. I ended up selling my ZV-E1 and got the a7cR. Absolutely love the flexibility I get with that camera. I can do anything I want with it without compromising which I felt the ZV-E1 forced me to do with just a 12mp sensor for images.

    • @RodneyGracia
      @RodneyGracia 6 місяців тому

      @BrianCatalano It's perfectly fine. I mostly shoot my channel videos on a tripod. So the camera is perfect for that. I also love that I have 3 RAW sizes I can set which reduce the total mp when I know I don't need a super high res image. So i can bump it down to 26mp or 15mp. I did some hand held test video footage when I got it and was pretty happy with Standard and Active stabilization. I don't need more than that.

    I hesitated a lot too last months and finally get the A7CII and I love it. I miss the 4K120 but its so versatile to have a more more mega pixels. Then, you can see some clips in 4K120 vs HD120 and with a good lens, no one can see the difference once it's posted on social media. I can crop a lot in the video and get differents shot types with one single clip. Second, I often shot in bad weather condition and the internal mic on the zv e1 is a no go for me (I would need to add tape on it or something each time) better grip on the A7CII too. Paired with the tamron 20-40 2.8 and its the complete most versatile camera I know.

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  5 місяців тому +1

      You make a solid case...and honestly, the resolution and far superior grip make the A7Cii better in almost all situations. On top of the 4k 120 (which I don't use that much),
      I love the dynamic range on the zve1 and the dynamic stabilization, so my dream would be some Frankenstein of those two. Yet, I totally get where you're coming from and love that the A7Cii has exceeded your expectations! It seems like more and more people are picking them up of late because it's hard to deny how versatile it is!!

    NEW SUB! Love your channel and your information - I too just got the A7C II and I have been having some issues that you have had and I would love to see an in depth review update on your opinion on it. Many others on YT - just LOVE IT - but I feel like I have been having the EXACT same experience as you - I too also sold my A7C (which I loved) to get this and was SO excited - and then - sort of let down. I did update the Firmware on my samyang lens - and so far I have tried one of my Tamron lenses (20-40) and it seems to be OK - I need to now go and try ALL of my lenses and make sure things are OK. Also - I really liked your thoughts on bringing too much gear, and actually getting the shots you want....AND...having a five year old to work around as well! Great stuff man!

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  5 місяців тому

      I appreciate all of this, from one creator to another, that means more than you know... And additionally, it's particularly interesting that our experiences were the same here. The A7C was my true love, and I just presumed the A7Cii would take that adoration to the moon... So when I didn't immediately fall for it, for reasons I can't fully quantify yet, I got what I guess you'd call, cognitive dissonance. Now, every time I pick up the camera, I have mixed emotions...
      I plan on making an extended review in the near future to explore this and will also be making a proper comparison video between the A7Cii and the zve1 because I do intend to sell one of them, but I'm currently undecided by which one, so I'm hoping that the process of making the video will inform that decision...
      Either way, I really appreciate the sub and you taking the time to comment at all. Thanks again!!

And my situation is a little more compounded in that I got a GREY market version - which is a whole other story - but - it puts this cloud over using the camera, that I was SO EXCITED about getting - but I think I gotta just snap out of it - knowing that a lot these issues are universal helps - it means there will be a fix - which there is already for the Samyang lenses. @BrianCatalano  6 місяців тому

      Thank you...and that's a great question! Can I presume that you mean the S5ii or the or A7Cii (not a72 or a73)!? I know it's confusing with all the numbers... There's a lot to love with the Lumix, the price point is amazing and there are so many features in it that camera that should be in all cameras, they are doing great things... and obviously the stabilization is amazing! Yet, the main issue for me would be autofocus and L-mount, and since you're already in e-mount I would more likely stay in the ecosystem and look at a73, A7C, or A7Cii. If you're looking to just be in a different ecosystem for the fun of it, I'd also consider the Nikon ZF (e to z mount adapts well).
      Also, the original A7C is still great and you can get used ones for $1200. I did a comparison with that if you're interested:

I'd probably just go with the a7CII, and I would still take three lenses. Great video. I sold my ZV-E1 because I got the a7Rv and the video out of the RV is prefect. Yes not as good in low light so that is why I have the DJI Pocket 3. I see that you take a lot of stills so I am sure you like the IQ from the CII vs the E1 plus the viewfinder. The ZV-E1 is an incredible camera but its main purpose is video. Digging these vacation POV vids! I'll do some when I go to Southeast Asia later this year. I'm planning on taking my A7Cii (I replaced my ZV-E1) the newly announced Sony 16-25 2.8 & 24-50 2.8. (plus a longer prime like Sigma 65 or Yonguo 85). I feel that the 16-25 will get the most use. Also, I'll be bringing the Pocket 3 and iPhone 15 Pro (and ND's). * Drone on my wish list after all this damn new camera gear LOL. You may want to do a look up in LR and see what focal lengths you used the most to help narrow down your lens selection. Also, I do feel that the A7Cii would have covered everything you needed. ** Looking forward to the Zf (on my radar as well) review, but I feel it's too heavy and bulky for my travels.

    Beautiful location. Which camera i would take is probably the insta360 ace pro. Its got really nice low light performance, and its compact. The problem with zv-e1 is that its expensive, always afraid to loose it because of that. Its not portable enough to have in your pocket.

      Man, I get all that...and honestly all the gear you have is pretty perfect, but I can imagine it's all pretty heavy, too! I'm 44 and have those same considerations. And if I had the insta x3, I'd probably just bring those three items and be good to go!

      @@BrianCatalano the reason I leaning for zve1 more it’s because of the sensor from a7sIII. A7IV still kinda struggle a little during low light situations, a lot of noise during colour grading. So I have the A7CII..but wondering if its worth it to change to the A7CR...any thoughts on the video difference and which is actually better...I know the 33 to 61 mp difference...

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  6 місяців тому

      Well that is a good and difficult question that may have a very subjective answer... So for me, I'd prefer the A7Cii as a hybrid camera and as someone who leans more towards video. The CR has worse dynamic range and rolling shutter performance. Yet, if you lean more towards photography, the CR is a fantastic option because you get like three cameras in one, you get the 61mp full frame camera or you can reduce the size of the files giving dual flexibility there...and then you basically get a Sony a6700 when you turn the camera in crop mode, so even with video, your 4k in crop will be fantastic, so with a nice zoom lens, like a 24-70, you get a fantastic 24-105...or you can crop even tighter if you want as you have the MPs or resolution to do so.
      So, it's a tough decision. If you shoot in mostly 4k 24fps with longer intervals, I believe the A7Cii is a much better video camera and questionably a better hybrid camera... And for me, the file management of 33mp or 61mp is worth considering.
      Yet again, without question, the CR is a far superior photography tool that is a great value because you are getting multiple cameras within that one body.
      Not sure if that helps? What way are you leaning!?

    Looking forward to the comparisons between the A7CII, ZV-E1, and Nikon ZF. What's your favorite after using them so far?

      Thank you! That's a crazy good question... So I think without question, the zve1 is the best compact video camera on the market. The video quality is special, and still good photos... And the A7Cii is the best compact hybrid camera on the market (for me)... And yet, the Zf is the most fun to use and has so much style (the image out of it and how it looks) made me love picking it up and shooting with it. If the A7Cii's internals were in the Zf body with its picture profiles too, it would be an easy choice... and ironically, if the zve1 was in the A7Cii's body (the grip and EVF) that would be an easy choice for me as well! So, I don't have a clear winner yet!

      @@BrianCatalano thanks for the insight. What is it about the picture profiles of the A7CII/ZV-E1 you prefer over the Nikon? How do the log profiles and DR compare? (Slog3 vs Nlog)
      I thought this comparison was interesting and I actually much preferred the skintones out of the ZF: ua-cam.com/video/Bc6h8Dd2c64/v-deo.htmlsi=t2mFYO-nLi1pOXhg

      @@bladerealm124 also great question, and one that I probably don't have enough experience with the Zf to answer completely without bias. Yet, in that video you attached, it's difficult because there are so many variables and one of those isn't just ambient light in the room but also skin tones of the person in that room. Some people's skin may look better with Sony shifts or Nikon because of underlying tints within their skin. Then there's resolution differences and ISO performance differences that may influence the blacks or luma shifts, so I think if you wanted you could get them to match... And I have more experience with slog3 than nlog, so that's probably not a fair estimation either as which one is easier to work with. I really like S-Cinetone in the sonys, but I really enjoyed the rich portrait color on the Zf, but they are really different looks altogether... So as far as color is concerned, I think it may be up to preference... But as far as the sensors, all 3 are very different. I think the Zf is the noisiest but also has the most "personality", the zve1 is the all around cleanest and best, and the A7Cii is the most crisp especially in a studio setting, the most ideal! Yet, it really is splitting hairs. They are all so good that, there isn't a bad option in the bunch!

      @@BrianCatalano good points regarding skin tones. I've had the ZF for a few months and also haven't spent enough time with it to judge it much, especially with video. I shot Sony previously (A7RIV, A9II, etc) and always struggled to get skin tones looking right, mainly in photos but I presume video had similar challenges. It could also be the AWB not being perfect which I relied on often and then had to try to tweak later. I noticed with each new gen Sony's skin tones and AWB seemed to improve, less green shift. The A9II was far better than what I started with way back (A6000, A7RII). I'm wondering if the newer Sony bodies have improved further. My understanding is that the ZV-E1 is similar/exact to the A7SIII but with the A7CII/A7IV being newer I wonder if they are any different. Have you noticed any differences with skintones between your A7CII and ZV-E1, or ease of grading or auto white balance?
      On my current Canon R5 setup I've noticed the skin tones straight out of Canon are much more pleasing and easier to get just right than my older Sony bodies were. The problem is Canon's Clog and Clog3 suck compared to Sony (huge file sizes, inefficient, noisy shadows).

      @@bladerealm124 all good points there! My fx3's auto white balance seems slightly different to the zve1s and the A7Cii, but I love that Sony's sensor cover cap is a gray "card", so easy to set white balance. However, I do use awb often...and for whatever the reason, I prefer the zve1s colors to the A7Cii's. I also would agree that most Canons and Nikon's have way better standard colors, especially up until 2021. I've also used the a7r4 and A73, and those were not my favorite. The original A7C's color science was improved quite a bit, but I feel like Sony finally found their footing with their 10bit cameras.
      As for the ease of color grading, I find between the A7Cii and zve1 they are fairly equal (and files are super easy to work with on my m1 MacBook Air) but my eye always gravitates to the zve1. Whereas between the zve1 and Zf it's closer. I shot in the black and white in both photo and video and fell for the Zf monotone. Nikon nailed it!
      I'm not sure if that helps at all...
      By the by, I just bought the ZfC for super cheap (to satiate my nostalgic need) but I may end picking up the Zf again!

    you can simply your video clips A LOT by simply not moving. If you insist on moving, 4K60 or 120, you can easily get extra footage, something like a five second clip goes a long way (B-roll). Seriously, just stand still, it's ok 😂😂
