- This video is all about Beneficial insects for pest control in your vegetable gardens - in particular lacewings, ladybirds, hoverflies, bees and butterflies!
I interviewed Entomologist Dr Paul Horne - director of IPM Technologies - (entomologist = insect expert!) to learn about the secret allies of every successful vegetable garden in Australia.
We'll cover off how to identify adult lacewings, ladybirds, hoverflies and other beneficial insects, how to identify their eggs and larva (juveniles), what they do, which pests they control and how to attract them into your Australian Vegetable Gardens.
Learn how to protect your plants naturally, say goodbye to harmful pests and hello to a thriving, chemical-free veggie garden!

Great video Christie
All of this was information was very interesting. Thanks for interviewing him and sharing it with us.
I found it interesting too! The second video is taking me longer than planned to edit but it’s not far off ☺️
Paul Horne is a fascinating man with a very interesting area of study. I am going to buy his book 'Backyard Insects' for myself as a Christmas present. Anything that helps with a more sustainable approach to gardening is a good thing in my book. Thank you Christie.🌱👍
thanks for the links I got my book on back order I hope it comes in
Flowering grasses, what do the flowers look like? Also your videos with this antomologist. Have taught me way more than anything ive tried googling. and these questions dont seem that complicated, aspeshaly hearing your answer. I believe because nobody talks about theses amazing insects in common threads of the internet. Making finding it almost impossible if you have a hard time remembering science lingo of a specific field. So thank you
Wow, thank you! Love hearing this 😊
very informative, thank you very much. I have a vegetable garden since last year and there is so much to learn, I love it!! Greetings from Gouda, The Netherlands
Wow so interesting Christie. I always leave the aphids on my roses at the beginning of spring and they always sort themselves out with ladybugs 😊
I found it fascinating too! Glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinating, Christie.. thank you!
Re lace wing egg laying with an instant glue string... makes me believe in creation.
Very interesting as i start and set out a new garden after a move. I do ger -4 in winter so need to work around that.
Looking at ..
Strawberry tower
Elevated mellons
Vertical cucumbers
Fert. Bag sweet potato
Potato - still thinking.
At present my pumpkin is out of control...lol
Love your show.
Mum inlaw has a nice garden, spacing is great....laybe patches of weeds on movable pots? As Dr. Paul says we need them to attract good bugs.
My daughter in law visited this week and said abt my pumpkins." Too much water dad"! Then my son said...she has a Batchelors in agriculture. Lol. ..o. k. ! (Rain rain here in murgon qld)
The lacewing eggs are cool, aren't they! Best of luck with the new garden, I bet it will be amazing!
Flies are also superb pollinators too but they're usually overlooked.. there's tons of native flies too.
I've still got a lot to learn about the different flies!
So informative Christie thanks for filming this.
I have so many lady bugs this year, more than I have seen in many years.
I love seeing them they are beautiful and always look very busy 💚
I've been seeing heaps of them around too! They're so gorgeous to look at, it's fun seeing the kids interacting with them too!
Hey there is a use for that awful soapy tasting herb that I hate. Guess I'll be growing coriander this year 🤢🤢😅😅
Thanks for this, it's nice to see some info about beneficial insects for Australian gardens!
Cooool vid Ms Christie & t/y. I may now try & grow parsley as well. Looking forward to the next insect video. 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it! I said it was 24 hours off but it might take me a few more days to edit 😅
Very good - great to feature scientists on the channel! I have a wide array of insects in my garden in central Victoria and this is very helpful..!
Thanks for the lovely feedback Alison! I learnt so much from him too!
Your vids are always detailed and informative. Thank you!
I'm on Phillip Island and there are so many wonderful ground birds here!
Last spring and summer (i.e.2023) we had masses of White Cabbage butterflies. This year hardly any!
Thanks for the lovely feedback! Yes I remember clearly, I actually ran a news report on Seven News on the cabbage white butterflies last year - they were crazy! Such a relief they seem to have settled down.
Just bought the book 😆 thanks for the link. I’m sure the kids are gonna love it too 😍
Great to hear! I hope you find it as interesting as I have :)
Excellent video, so interesting. Thank you! I have my coriander and parsley seeds ready to plant around the edge of the garden so that they can to go to flower.
Awesome! Hope it works for you!
@@ChristieCooperdoes the book include photos of the eggs and larvae of each species?
Great very helpful-- Thank you --Ray Delbury Sussex County NJ USA
Thanks for joining Ray! Very cool to have viewers all over the world!
Nice video! If you want some footage of hoverflies, happy to share the one I used in my short "Hoverflies: The Bee's Knees (But Not Actually Bees)"
Don't suppose you've got any good footage of aphids or caterpillars? There are usually heaps in my garden but this year - very few aphids!
@@ChristieCooper I'll have a look around, not too many caterpillars but should have some aphids on the roses or rosella.
Not too many at this point but have captured a bit of video, close up and out on the rose bush. Normally I have a real problem with the but not so far. let me know how to share with you.
Gee, this video will make me think twice before squishing any insects. It’s important to know the life cycle of an insect and what they look like at different stages before getting rid of anything. You could be killing the good bugs. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
I found it all really interesting too! Glad you found it helpful. Keep an eye out for my next video with Paul all about caterpillars and aphids - I've got a bit of editing to do so it's probably still a few days away but you definitely won't be squishing bugs after seeing it!
Id like to know what will naturally eat white fly?
I’ll have to find out!
Ive witnessed an adult hover fly catch a long catepiller by its neck and fly away with it!
That sounds very cool! I thought it was only the juvenile hover flies that ate caterpillars?
You want 🐞 grow corn 👍🏼
Excellent! Corn is growing!
Please be sure to watch out for Harlequin bugs. The young ones mimic ladybug physics. By the way, is there any natural predator of harlequin bugs? I once trained a few quails to control harlequin bugs, those birds are long gone. I miss them dearly.
That'd be a question for Paul but I'll find out and let you know! I haven't seen them in my garden before but I'll keep an eye out for them. Very cool that you can train quails to control them! Are you in Victoria?
I would love to know as well! They were terrible for me this year. I’m in the US.
I've got t 2 paper wasp nests one on a fence and the other on a grape vine stem , I read that they are a predictor of the caterpillar. It's the first I've seen it. The nest is a fine piece of engineering no tools required amazing.
Interesting! I just googled them - they are very cool nests! Love that they'll take care of your caterpillars too!
You want 🐝 grow blue salvia
But be careful as it's a leeder type plant. Keep it enclosed or it will spread like blackberries do 🤔
That’s a beautiful option 🙌🏼
🙌🏼
