I grew up in SE Michigan and I'm enamoured with all its vinage-y lovliness. I think midcentury Detroit has some of the most beautiful little homes I've ever seen. These bathrooms are in every single one of them. They're in the large, masterful homes as well, there's just more of them. No matter what the tile color is or how much I may hate that color, if the house I'm looking at has original anything I'm excited. Luckily no one else wants them so they're in my tiny budget.
If I walk into a "flipped" house with plasticky flooring and brand new drywall it's an immediate NO. I actually feel a bit sorry for the place. I mourn the loss of cove ceilings and inefficient metal-framed windows. If I wanted to live in a condo, I wouldn't be looking at a house. Bring on the problems that occur in a house that's of an age. Those are my kind of problems.
I wish more fixers like LK embraced what they couldn't (and sometimes shouldn't) change. It always has a richer feel at the end of the project. Her age-respecting bathroom looks amazing. It looks intentional. Which it is. Sorry for the book.😅

My husband and I sold our last home 15 years ago and decided to rent. We treat our home that we are renting as though it was our own. We don’t care if we are paying the bank or a landlord with our make overs; it is our home while we live here. We have paid for a landscape architect to do our backyard, we have painted our whole house and we put up a picket fence. We love our home.

As a landlady, I can say for certain that if you talk to your landlord and want to make reasonably priced improvements there's a very good chance you'll get a rent deduction. Ask first! Also, unless CA is VERY different I think the lightswitch by the shower is violating code. Which means your landlord HAS to fix it by law, you can withhold rent until he or she does it.

    • @NoraDesmond897
      @NoraDesmond897 9 днів тому

I hope she read this and decided to tell the landlord. That being close to a water source can not be up to code.

Yay, it's Sunday and here you are LK!!!! I have rented ON PURPOSE my entire life by choice. I've never had the desire to own. I have always made each and every place I've rented my own. I'm not the kind of person that moves much. I've lived decades in each home. The money I've invested in each of my homes has brought me joy and peace. I love the idea that when something goes wrong I just have to make a phone call and the repair person is here quickly at no further expense to me. I can't imagine having enough money saved for a new roof or driveway paving or gawd forbid new windows. My landlords have always treated me well because I take care of their properties so it's a fair deal. I believe you have to make your home your comfort zone.
Now LK you did a fantastic job on the bathtub. I love how the bathroom turned out. It looks terrific and to be honest I like the pink and black tile. Hugs, Jan/Toronto.

Hi from Georgia, LK. I’m 74 and renting a home since my husband passed away. My house was built in 1964 and EVERYTHING is original. I have an agreement with my landlord that I would be a permanent tenant if he allowed me to do some upgrades. Could I ever show you befores and afters! Embracing my yellow tiled bathroom, new light fixture, recaulked, painted laminate cabinets, and painted it a soft creamy yellow. I so wish that I had found you earlier. Your ideas are awesome and I am also binge watching!!! Thank you!!!

You are such a good renter! Just the fact that you cut out all that old mildewy caulk on the tub and scrubbed the floors made such a difference. I always say other people’s dirt is not the same as your dirt!☺️ I love the shower curtain and you’re right - the soap dispenser fits the color and vibe of the room. You know your landlord would probably be pleased with all your changes and maybe let you leave all the changes and might give you a discount on your rent considering all the upgrades you did. I remember Drew on Lone Fox did some upgrades to his rented apartment and the landlord loved everything he did. Great job!

The way you embraced the vintage vibe while still making the space feel like your own is inspiring. I especially appreciate how thoughtful you were in choosing colors and materials that not only complement the existing features but also elevate them. It's clear you put a lot of care and effort into this project, and the results are stunning. The cabinet, wow! Can’t believe what a difference that trim made in making it feel vintage and cool. The paint choice is great. Very thoughtful job within your constraints (rental)! And the result is lovely.
My pink and GREEN tiled bathroom, which is a lot larger than yours, was a puzzle. I finally decided to lean into color. I put in a black tile floor and then went to town with bright colors-framing the mirror in orange, getting bright yellow (more gold than yellow) towels etc. from IKEA, and black and white patterned things, like shower curtain, bathmat, and runner rug (flat weave, cotton). My bathroom looks like a Mexican fiesta.

I grew up in my family homestead. When my dad was a kid, they didn’t have an indoor bathroom - they had outhouses. When Dad was in his teens (mid-1950s), he and his dad converted a small bedroom into a bathroom. It was pink 3x3 tile with black bullnose. I kind of really miss it. When you showed those examples of pink & black bathrooms, it gave me ideas. I just bought a house, and the main bath will eventually need to be redone. 😊

Thank goodness the floors are white with black diamond tiles. The entire house is painted in a neutral to creamy white which is not complimenting the wood doors - makes the paint look yellow and gloomy during the cloudy days. Thanks for the inspiration and for mentioning the BetterHelp line. I also go to counseling sessions through a different source but it's all the same.

I’m also really glad you couldn’t change out the light, personally I think it’s beautiful ❤
I do hope your landlord is willing to reimburse you at least for the cost of the handyman, if not for some of your other materials, since that light switch was a pretty necessary repair. But I get what you were saying, and I’ve done lots of unpaid improvements on rentals myself because after all I’m the one who has to live there so I might as well like the space I’m in 🙂

It turned out so good! Fixing those tiny bumps and holes, mouldy caulking and dirty looking tiles really changed up the space. These things can take a lot of time but I think it’s worth it and most people can do this stuff in their own bathrooms. Makes me want to try fixing up some of this stuff in my own bathroom.
Ps. I’m an Early American stain enjoyer, but now I want to try out honey next time I have a staining project!!

so many creative solutions, love it!! I personally would've done black accents instead of wood but the end result is beautiful! you should definitely use that same outlet cover to replace the light switch cover!!!

Awesome sauce!!! I would tell anyone wherever you lay your head, make it the best. I did not do that for years, and I see I wasted precious time. Make your place beautiful for you.

Wow, new here. I LOVe it. I especially appreciated how you were leaning towards a paint color based on preference, but then you changed your mind because it better suited the atmosphere.

Love this bathroom makeover ❤ I recently painted the walls in the bathroom, changed all the hardware and added a few decor pieces to make it feel more me. Little TLC in the space you live in is totally worth it

Wow girl, the transformation is amazing! You put in alot of hard work. I would sure talk to your landlord to see if they would at least deduct your supply costs from rent since you really did them a huge favor. With the way the housing situation has turned, more and more people will not be able to afford or can even find a home to buy, so will have to rent. I too rent and like you, I try to make it more of my own.

Get some grout paint. Or use acrylic paint with a small paint brush

You might want to frame your mirror with same wood stain you used for medicine cabinet. For floor you might consider painting each oxigon tile by alternating white or cream and black.

Love what you’ve done, looks sooooo much better, the colour you chose is perfect. I really like the wooden touch on the medicine cupboard, and the new knobs. I think that the vanity is not original as you can see tiles behind it, don’t think the builders would have used tiles there if that was the original.
I had a similar mirror in my bathroom to yours and I made a frame for it, stained it a similar colour to warm up the room. I also added a shelf with the same wood above the loo.
