I grew up in SE Michigan and I'm enamoured with all its vinage-y lovliness. I think midcentury Detroit has some of the most beautiful little homes I've ever seen. These bathrooms are in every single one of them. They're in the large, masterful homes as well, there's just more of them. No matter what the tile color is or how much I may hate that color, if the house I'm looking at has original anything I'm excited. Luckily no one else wants them so they're in my tiny budget.
If I walk into a "flipped" house with plasticky flooring and brand new drywall it's an immediate NO. I actually feel a bit sorry for the place. I mourn the loss of cove ceilings and inefficient metal-framed windows. If I wanted to live in a condo, I wouldn't be looking at a house. Bring on the problems that occur in a house that's of an age. Those are my kind of problems.
I wish more fixers like LK embraced what they couldn't (and sometimes shouldn't) change. It always has a richer feel at the end of the project. Her age-respecting bathroom looks amazing. It looks intentional. Which it is. Sorry for the book.😅

My husband and I sold our last home 15 years ago and decided to rent. We treat our home that we are renting as though it was our own. We don’t care if we are paying the bank or a landlord with our make overs; it is our home while we live here. We have paid for a landscape architect to do our backyard, we have painted our whole house and we put up a picket fence. We love our home.

I'm so thankful for your attitude. As a landlord of 30+ years, I get so tired of posts promoting the idea that landlords are all awful greedy people. Most landlords I come across are not, but they also don't have a lot of money to spend after paying the mortgage. I'm happy to work with people to help them enjoy the house without making it hard for me to paint over when the tenant leaves. Most of my tenants stay a long time (5+ years), so it really isn't a big amount over time to spend a few hundred dollars making the house cozy for them. 😊 Love LK's videos.

I think a mustard or even lemon yellow faux/dried flower would look nice in the vase on the cabinet (something about salmon pink/dark green/yellow really appeals to me!). Love this!

@@livingwithlkHi LK! Found your channel not long ago and I really love your content. I’m sure there are a lot of things that I don’t understand about getting sponsorships, but I just wanted to alert you in case you weren’t yet aware that there are some major issues with BetterHelp and a lot of similar therapy companies. They’ve had issues with client privacy and they also seem to really undervalue their therapists- paying them a lot less than the going rate. I think the way that they’re able to hire is that they mislead therapists through their contracting process. I imagine this has to lead to quite a bit of therapist turnover, too (can’t verify this part)?

Yay, it's Sunday and here you are LK!!!! I have rented ON PURPOSE my entire life by choice. I've never had the desire to own. I have always made each and every place I've rented my own. I'm not the kind of person that moves much. I've lived decades in each home. The money I've invested in each of my homes has brought me joy and peace. I love the idea that when something goes wrong I just have to make a phone call and the repair person is here quickly at no further expense to me. I can't imagine having enough money saved for a new roof or driveway paving or gawd forbid new windows. My landlords have always treated me well because I take care of their properties so it's a fair deal. I believe you have to make your home your comfort zone.
Now LK you did a fantastic job on the bathtub. I love how the bathroom turned out. It looks terrific and to be honest I like the pink and black tile. Hugs, Jan/Toronto.

As a landlady, I can say for certain that if you talk to your landlord and want to make reasonably priced improvements there's a very good chance you'll get a rent deduction. Ask first! Also, unless CA is VERY different I think the lightswitch by the shower is violating code. Which means your landlord HAS to fix it by law, you can withhold rent until he or she does it.

    • @NoraDesmond897

I think you were exactly right about making the bathroom a nice space for you even though it’s not your property. I owned property for 40 years and was in property management business the same amount of time. So many tenants moved in and basically destroyed everything that I did, no one took pride. No one cared very few anyways. So to see that you are taking pride is very encouraging. I’ve been a homeowner most of my life, but I’ve also been a tenant and I did exactly how you’re doing. Just because a landlord owns a property does not mean that they’re filthy rich. Most try to make it affordable for you in many cases, such as mine. So kudos to you for taking the initiative to make it a comfortable space for you and your sister-in-law!

Hi from Georgia, LK. I’m 74 and renting a home since my husband passed away. My house was built in 1964 and EVERYTHING is original. I have an agreement with my landlord that I would be a permanent tenant if he allowed me to do some upgrades. Could I ever show you befores and afters! Embracing my yellow tiled bathroom, new light fixture, recaulked, painted laminate cabinets, and painted it a soft creamy yellow. I so wish that I had found you earlier. Your ideas are awesome and I am also binge watching!!! Thank you!!!

You are such a good renter! Just the fact that you cut out all that old mildewy caulk on the tub and scrubbed the floors made such a difference. I always say other people’s dirt is not the same as your dirt!☺️ I love the shower curtain and you’re right - the soap dispenser fits the color and vibe of the room. You know your landlord would probably be pleased with all your changes and maybe let you leave all the changes and might give you a discount on your rent considering all the upgrades you did. I remember Drew on Lone Fox did some upgrades to his rented apartment and the landlord loved everything he did. Great job!

Hello LK! I couldn't agree with you more about maintaining the home for mental, physical and emotional health. Like you I am also about to renovate a yellow tiled bathroom. Thank goodness the floors are white with black diamond tiles. The entire house is painted in a neutral to creamy white which is not complimenting the wood doors - makes the paint look yellow and gloomy during the cloudy days. Thanks for the inspiration and for mentioning the BetterHelp line. I also go to counseling sessions through a different source but it's all the same.

Very thoughtful job within your constraints (rental)! And the result is lovely.
My pink and GREEN tiled bathroom, which is a lot larger than yours, was a puzzle. I finally decided to lean into color. I put in a black tile floor and then went to town with bright colors-framing the mirror in orange, getting bright yellow (more gold than yellow) towels etc. from IKEA, and black and white patterned things, like shower curtain, bathmat, and runner rug (flat weave, cotton). My bathroom looks like a Mexican fiesta.

„What works for the house“ yes! I’m in a brand new modern build now and I’ve had to change my flea market ways. Still me and my style but more minimal, polished, and geometric than I’ve ever worked with - which makes sense when one lives down the street from a Bauhaus exhibit! I also have to say I love that you integrate deep cleaning with your makeovers. So important! Also, to those who say you’re wasting money spending on a place you don’t own is just bizarre to me. I can’t imagine thinking the place I live in every day is disposable and unworthy of investment. I was raised moving often and we always left the places better than we found them. I didn’t realize until now how that habit gave me a sense of home whoever I may be.

The bathroom outcome is remarkable. So clean and crisp and quietly cheerful. You're so right, the sum of the small things together made a huge impact. Job well done!
FYI. A TSP soak will make paint slip right off of hardware without the stink. Removes mold as well.

It is very important to make your environment as nice as possible - aligning with your personal esthetic as well. It doesn't matter if your space is large, small, old, new, owned or rented. Also, the premise of this channel is making spaces nice. So, revenue for the creator and interest for the public.

Great result! I totally agree that having a home where you feel good about it and have made it your own with your style is so important. It really did make a great impact on the tired old bathroom.

You might want to frame your mirror with same wood stain you used for medicine cabinet. For floor you might consider painting each oxigon tile by alternating white or cream and black.

I love the transformations! I only dislike the chunky vase on top of the cabinet, but that's my taste. wonderful result

so many creative solutions, love it!! I personally would've done black accents instead of wood but the end result is beautiful! you should definitely use that same outlet cover to replace the light switch cover!!!

Wow, well done! Loved seeing you attack the grout and tile 😍 I wonder what the cabinet would look like the same colour as the wall? LOVE that you also painted the ceiling! Love your mindset ✨

I've recently returned to my growing up house from 1956 - all original features, including tile and fixtures. I don't want to change them, but I don't want the overall feeling to be neglected. Seeing you do your own spin using what was already there and part of the house may help nudge me to get to work.

I was born in the 50's and our house had pink and black tile too! My dad built our house and my mom chose the pink and black! Wonderful memory to see that again!

I personally ❤❤❤those beautiful colors! The house I grew up in, built in the 50’s had “Holiday Turquoise” sinks, tub and toilet ( if I’m remembering correctly).
A few houses down, they had a bathroom completely outfitted in black! But I love your pink and black!!

The wall colour is an inspired choice! Tones down the pink tile and brings a lot of warmth to the room. That colour also makes the vanity top feel intentional and integrated. The whole space feels cohesive now. Good job! In addition to the excellent content, your voice is very pleasant to listen to. Subscribing now!
