Simple Sanding Station used on DPM Models. Model Railroad Tools.

- This is a sanding station I put together for the video series on dpm model building. Its comprised of a few things:
1 Flat board of some kind, smooth top, I used MDF board, its a little over an inch thick I think.
2 400 grit sand paper
4 120 grit sand paper
5 Tacky Spray
6 Rubber feet.
Hope this helps, this is the single most useful tool for DPM models aside from something to square the edges, like I am using here the 1x2x3 blocks.
The mitre box seen in this video is from X Acto

Haven't seen a new video from Mike in ages. Really enjoy his videos and techniques....hope all is well, and is back soon
Hey, thanks for the comments and compliments. I wish I could, just not in a place where I can do much at all. Maybe someday!
I still come back to this channel once every while to check if you’ve made another video
I can surely appreciate that, I wish I had the time and place to do more video's. You leaving this comment surely makes me want to do more, just knowing people appreciate them. Thanks for the comments and keep checking back, it could happen some day.
these take me back, this popped up in my recommendations again.
was 13 when i started watching your videos and wanting to do stuff like these because of my grandpa.
now i do warhammer and like making terrain. some days i wonder how your doing and wonder why you stopped making videos. hope everything's alright.
Hello Venrick, Hey, thanks for checking in and leaving a comment, much appreciated. I did enjoy making these video's, however real life gets in the way some times and just cant find the time to do these types of things right now, maybe in the future but just cant get it together enough to get them done again. I played WOW for a long time to, I know how it draws you in, you should though at least build one structure if you can to get a feel for it, its not for everybody. Thanks again for the comments!
Building models in yer PJ's, now that's how to relax. Thanks for the video, I'm gonna make one of these, cheaper than a disk/belt sander.
It takes a lot of elbow grease though :) Thanks for the comments.
You're always thinking, wife and I went over to our local Micheal's and did really well with some of your suggestions! Thanks again for sharing...
Good deal! What did you pick up?
Nice - elegant in its simplicity! I'll have to look at copying one for my projects.
It sure is useful, I really use it a lot on the DPM models!
It's good to have a solid surface to work with.
Yes! Thanks for the comments!
Hi Mike I hope you are doing ok...All the best Jim..
All good! Thanks for checkin in!
Nice tip I would never have thought of something like that
If you build a lot of plastic structures, you will love this thing.
I will have to stop looking at your Vids, that's another thing I will have to make now lol, really good and simple idea. Thanks.
lol! Thats to funny, Always something to do on a model railroad, just seems we can work and work and work and then look back and see everything we missed. I have had a few of these in my modeling days and find them very useful, as long as its in arms reach, it gets used a lot. Send a picture when its done!
Hallo Mike .
this is very good to use. Thanks Mike
Just found a new channel, hope one day you can continue
Hello Leatherface123, thanks for the comment and I assume a subscription. Not much here really, a few video's that many seem to appreciate. Not sure if I will ever be able to return making video's, the hope is that I would be able to. I do appreciate you visiting and glad someone is watching my videos.
@@ModelerManMike no problem 👍🏻
Nice sanding station. Thanks for sharing
Glad I could share!
Super ideal! Thanks for sharing!
Very welcome!
Great idea, thanks for sharing. Mike
You bet! Thanks for the comments!
Great video Mike! This is a great sanding station and is so easy to make. Keep up the great work.

+Rocky Stuart (roadhawg) Thanks for writing, I hope I can get back to it soon also!
This is a great idea Mike, i'll be borrowing this one for sure. Nick
All good! Do what you need for yer stuff, I share for that reason! Thanks so much for the compliments.
Great 'how to' Mike! I need to make one of these. Thanks for showing this. I also need to get a set of those 1,2,3 blocks.
Deryk
Hey, Deryk, thanks for the comments and compliments!
Great little tip there Mike! I'll be building one of these in the next few days. Thanks for sharing.
Ethan
You bet! Thanks for the comments..
Simple, but useful. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, it is very useful, thanks for the comments. Have been working much with the PIC's? I sure have not had the time.
Great idea! Gonna make up something like that for my building right now. Thanks for sharing enjoy your videos they are helpful.
Thank you!
Thanks for all of your informative videos. You have very easy going, simple, down-to-earth friendly, yet very affective and logical way of explaining things.
Makes learning new techniques and tips fun to learn and try. It is only a true professional with a built-in desire to help others and share ideas, who can make even the complex so easy to understand.
For that effort - thanks!
Looking forward to other videos.
Cheers,
Loggin' Locos.
Thanks so much for the compliments. Just to let you know, I do work at this it takes some time to figure out how to do something with not so many questions :) I appreciate your comments as well. Your time to put in some response makes it all worth while.
Mike great idea and simple cheers Robert
Thanks CSX for the comments. We have been missing you working with the hangouts. Hope everything is going ok for you. I have seen your recent build video's to, very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing them!
Hey hope everything is okay and I hope to see another video from you soon
Would be great to do another one someday, I hope to. We'll see. Thanks for the comments.
Great idea, thanks for sharing...simple, yet effective....
Love the picture, Thanks for the comments!

Thanks for sharing this Mike, I have done a similar thang myself. Great tip
It works great! Thanks for the comments Big Boss!
Great idea, thanks for sharing it.
You bet!
That´s how it is done! Helpful!
thanks
Mike I got hooked on your videos and noticed that it had been a while since you uploaded. I saw on Twitter that your son was doing well (which is awesome) and I'm sure that has taken up the majority of your time. I have two boys and understand that they are the priority! Anyway, hope you get a chance to get back to modeling soon, would love to see more videos!
Sooner, thanks so much for checking in and letting me know your thoughts. Yes, its been a long time since I have made any new video's for the channel here, I am just not set up good enough to build models and create video's to. Maybe sometime in the future, I hope so, man, I really hope so. Skyler is doing so much better, cancer free now. He and his daughter (3 years old now) still live with us, so, I cant get much modeling stuff out with this terror running around. Sooner, glad you enjoy the video's and hope that I can get some more up in the future. Take care.
ModelerManMike Mike, thanks for taking a minute to reply! I completely understand and family comes first. I also know what it's like to have a 3 year old running around (I have two boys myself, one in his 20s and one a bit younger). No worries at all!
Hopefully, you'll get some time to get back into the model making stuff again eventually. Your videos are awesome and having grown up in Oklahoma you remind me of so many folks I've known (at least your voice). Like I said, I've been really enjoying them and if you get a chance to come back and make more, I'll definitely watch them!
Take care my friend!
I was born in OKC, lived in Tulsa, sand springs, broken arrow, bixby as a kid off and on, back and forth between texas and oklahoma, settled in texas though. So, I can see where you might just hear some okie in there somewhere! :)
ModelerManMike I knew I liked you for a reason!
Thank you,its a great idea.And time saver
jeff lizotte Thanks for the comments!
Great idea buddy, gonna build one, thanks for sharing, Stu
You bet Stu! Thanks so much for the comments!
ya did it again Mike
thanks again, Chuck
You bet chuck, I hope you enjoyed it! This is probably one of the most useful tooks when building DPM models. Keeping that sand paper flat makes all the difference I think when clearing the draft's.
Real neat idea! Thanks for yet another great little tip video. Very useful.
Cheers?
Loggin' Locos
Hello Loggin Locos! Thanks for the comments and compliments to! This is probably one of the most used tools I have during any build. Handy to! Glad you liked it!
What a great idea, i, ll make one when i have the use of both hands again, thans Mike
You only have one? :)
Had right hand operated on yesterday
That's a great idea Mike and thanks for sharing. ..........Graham
Thanks for the comments Graham!
Great idea!
thanks!
hey mike, great models, tips, your awesome. good'ay to ya
Hey, thanks, glad you enjoy them.
Cool build Mike! Always great things from you. Keep up the good work. Later, John
I really like using this thing, its so handy! :) Thanks for the comments.
Great tip! Thank you
Your welcome!
gut gemacht Mike ;)
Nur eine einfache cooles Tool! Danke für die Kommentare!
How are things going with you at this strange time we are all going thru. Hope to see you make some new videos in the near future. I like your instructional videos and have integrated some techniques into my builds.
Hello Paul, thanks for checking in, appreciate the feedback. All things are as they have been for the past several years, my son is still battling cancer and we are working on that pretty heavy. It may be that I can get some new video's up if we see some promising cancer treatments. Glad your using some of the tips in the video's.
I am still waiting on check. President said it was in the mail too.
Art, sit back and wait... it will be there.... uh... just sit back and wait... it will be there......
I'll have to make one.
If you build DPM Models, it will become your cool tool!
Haven't seen any new videos in sometime. I hope all is well Mike.
Its been a while I know. I have so much going on right now I have had no time for my modeling stuff. I hope to get back to it sometime in the near future. Thanks for the comments and concern!
ModelerManMike, Can't wait man😊
2020 hope your back soon.
I guess it is quite off topic but does anyone know a good place to stream newly released series online?
@Reuben Justice i watch on Flixzone. Just google for it =)
Top Tip!
nice !!! i will make one for me..
If you build many DPM models, its a great tool!
Nice tip & Demonstration, on How to Make.
Thanks Gary! and, thanks for the comments!
Very useful tool, I have one myself, but naturally it isn't as professionally constructed as yours. My other precision tool is a big hammer.....lol.......David (UK)
As long as it gets the job done I say :)
making videos in a bath rope lol Great videos!
Nice idee
Thanks, it works well.
Great tip, Mike!! I know just the piece of scrap MDF that I'm going to use!! Those metal blocks that you use - 3 2 1 or 1 2 3 blocks - when can I find those? They will help when I begin my re-builds on the DPM buildings.
Take care!!!
Hey Brian, glad you got to see your video :) The 1 by 2 by 3 (1x2x3) blocks you can find on ebay, I have purchased sets from Micro Mark to but they are a bit more expensive from them.
Mike I hope you and your are well....not seen a post for so long...
jim...
Yea, we are in the heat of things, boy just made it through cancer, and now, looks like we are moving again, might be a while till I get settled in again.
ModelerManMike Hi MIke,
I am very sorry to hear of the bad times you and your family have had,
I wish you all the best..Jim
Thanks Jim.
शानदार वीडियो आपका
आपकी टिप्पणीयों के लिए धन्यवाद।
where are you? are you okay? please come back to youtube!!
Hey Joey, I am still around, I am not making video's right now though. We have been engulfed with family and just dont have the time. Maybe in the future at some point though.
I put a toung on the front edge of mine and this hooks on the front of my work station and keeps the sanding block from shifting.
+David Curtis That will work to! I am usually working on glass, and rubber feet on this works great against glass, it wont move at all.
Why did you quit dude? You still have almost 10,000 subs.
Crazy right? I am not in any position to produce video's. We move around a lot with the military and we currently live in a place so small I cant get my model railroading stuff in our apartment.
Gotta hav one now lol.
This is really useful tool, I have probably made 10 of these in my life. I lose them or something, who knows but for model building, you cant beat it. Its really useful on the DPM models I have found. Cant wait to see yours in your video's!
Handy
Cool tool!
Another great 'Why didn't I think of that?' video! BTW...were you wearing your bathrobe? Can't be too comfortable while modeling, eh? Gotta try that...
Ric Schlexer Hey Ric, thanks for the comments. And yes, that is a bathrobe, I have three of these that I use when modeling. They are really more than anything "bibs". I have ruined so many clothes and use these to cover my clothing. works well, anyone that has commented on this think I have just come out of the shower :)
Went to a medical supply house and bought a full length lab coat. It's cooler than any of my robes and can be thrown in the wash when it gets dirty.
David Curtis Hey, this is a great idea!
Mike I'm here in Texas let me know if you wanna go railfaning, train watching.
I am currently in Killeen TX, its about 3 hours from Dallas. I appreciate the offer though.
I am in Temple! Yeeehaaa! Down the street!
Great idea Mike , those metal blocks you use , who sell's them
Cheers Glynn
1x2x3 blocks, you can get fro ebay or micro mark! great model building tool there.
Thanks Mike
You should have removed the UPC label from the back of the paper. It will make a lump.
What is the metal block you're using as a guide to true up the angles on your DPM model and where do I find one?
Hey Greg, these are called 1x2x3 blocks. I found mine on Ebay. They are used for metal working, they are bolted to a table to form metal fittings or other metal related things. You can get them different sizes, like 2x4x6 etc. Check Ebay/Amazon maybe.
Kewl, I got my 1 2 3 blocks from -Amazon
Excellent, your gonna love'em..
wow kool idea.. is it hard to replace the sandpaper after you tacked it down ?
No, it will pull off..
I am a total Nob when it comes to modeling and its tools . I am almost done building my setup. Waiting on the Airbrush to come in mail and in mean time building paint booth and tool gathering thanks so much for the idea go help alot !
You know, your doing the right thing, it helps to also build a few models to see what tools you will need and will actually use. The build process goes much smoother with tools you use in front of you easy access, hunting for stuff makes it not to fun. Sounds like your getting it all in order!
I have Leaned alot from watching Vet's & Seasoned Pro's like you tons of great tips and idea's. Home Work 1st . Not only it's not fun hunting down things you need but it can be Expensive .very costly. I Just turned 48yr but i have had some time painting couple cars and trucks az a kid and boy i tell you painting by hand and can not easy lol you have great day and thanks for the reply
I can assure you, I am no expert. Its all a work in progress and your right, learning tips from others is the best way to get good at this stuff. I fight with stuff just like everyone else and always learning to. I wish I had more time and space to work on the railroad, I am building an RC plane now to fly this summer.
Alway great. I know you are going to send me extra one??????
Its in the mail!
And if i like my plan i can keep my plan.
Its all about change... loose change, the jinglin kind..
r u still building
+Rocky Stuart (roadhawg) When I get time, have a lot going right now but hope to get back to it soon.
