Please do not throw away 20% of the picture just to make it fit a widescreen set. Release it as it was meant in 4:3 and if people want it to fill their screen they have the option to hit the zoom button on their TV remote controller.
There is no :"throw away here". It was shot on a Panaflex camera at 16:9 to start and cropped off the sides via pan and scan to give you 4:3. You have lost nothing. See the BorgCollective post for a better explanation.

During restoration, we also found :20 seconds of picture and audio that has been missing from the "cliffhanger" for "The Golden Man" episode that came at the end of "The Dream Monster." It was lost in the 1980s and features Penny picking flowers with Dr. Smith.
Wow, the clarity of the remastered version is absolutely fantastic. Better than brand new when aired on CBS on Wednesday nights at 7:30 P.M. prime time back in the 60's. I can't wait to buy the Blue-ray version of Lost In Space.
I as a hardcore fan of the series would love this to be done because the series marked my childhood and certainly marked the childhood of children hoje.Aqui in Brazil and elsewhere in the world, stressing that leave the same voice acting that was so successful in my time. yes not to forget the Brazil fan base here is very great, thank you all will be waiting anxious for the return of the series.
Will be a pride to Brazilian fans have in their homes that classic 60s. I hope to launch in the outside world and here in Brazil with the "Voice Classica AIC which is the same released on DVD in 2004/2005. Stayed in the crowd for this world premiere. It's amazing to me that someone was able to touch up programming that was originally intended for NTSC broadcast television 50 years ago, and do it so well!

I love this! Please use the 35mm master camera negatives for the Blue Ray transfers. Put the wide screen and original aspect ratio on the Blue Ray set. For the sound, use the master 3 tracks to create a beautiful 5.1 mix. It will be Glorious ! And you will see millions!
This is awesome guys, I hope you go through with restoring this show, I've been waiting several years for a possible blu-ray conversion. This show still has a strong fanbase and should be resurrected.
Both aspect ratios included would be awesome, but if only one is to releasesed, then let that be the original since the full frame actually has less of the original image visible.

I've dreamt about this for years but with an added thrill: vintage Tonight Show or other talk show appearances by cast members. You know they were most certainly on the promotion circuit back when LIS was on. Wouldn't it be great to be able to see Jonathan Harris, June, or Guy in a relaxed setting?! What a treat it would be.
This would be a day of release purchase for me providing it was available on Blu Ray in 4:3 aspect ratio and a region free/region 2 release was available. The restored image looks incredible so thanks for all the hard work to all those responsible. Bonus materials would be the icing on the cake...if possible.
As for the format concerns, the entire series was transferred from the 35mm fine grain master positives (in the case of the B&W episodes) or the CRIs (seasons 2 & 3). Everything was first mastered in reverse anamorphic keeping every slate, countdown, bumper and logo (including CBS logos) intact. These were scanned in such a way as to capture every bit of information- even cables, lights and microphones. Then we used this master to create both 1.33 and 1.78 versions.
Oh, And also; I am loving being able to see the extra screen on each side in 16.9! I've never seen the extra in the old aspect. Like watching a whole new episode.

I really want this series released in HD down here; with the excellent work done when this classic was released in DVD years ago, expect no less for a BD release, which should, obviously, include our language (portuguese) dubbing, simply because it is also a classic for us. Can't wait for it.
This is fantastic news! Not just that the series might be re-released for the 50th anniversary of the premier, but even more important is that it has been preserved in case God forbid something ever happens to the original negatives. I first viewed the video on my iphone and could see the differences. But after watching on a high def monitor I was blown away by the improvement. I really hope that more soundtrack cds will also be released in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the show.
I feel like a kid in a candy store! Getting this in high def will be awesome!!!! Hopefully this will come with new interviews and commentaries. Would love to see never before seen behind the scenes footage and bloopers if they can be found or still exist. Especially when poor Bob fell over in the Robot! His "Olympic 10" as he described it. I live in England, UK and have all 3 box sets of L.I.S. and would be delighted to buy them again in HD full frame. From the above clips it will be worth every £. I agree with a 5.1 surround sound to match the brilliant HD pictures. I was disappointed with the original DVD box sets quality on many episodes eg S2 'The Golden Man' (my favorite story) but do NOT regret buying them. That said, the above gives a whole new life to L.I.S and I hope this becomes a HD reality soon - thank you for doing this and continued success with the project. Please dont keep us waiting too long though, I was 14 when L.I.S was aired on UK TV back in the late 60 / early 70's !!!!
Considering the pain involved to make this happen in the first place, I don't think new CGI effects are even an option. In this case, the effects are part of the show's charm. Also, most of the miniature shots in space appear to be rear-projection which are cleaner than matte shots. I was actually shocked how dirty some of the matte shots in the original Star Trek FX appeared in HD. Standard definition video is very forgiving. I have a 16mm print of LIS "Wild Adventure" and the effects look great at that resolution!
sgtpepper1138 The original film elements appear to have some picture information available at the sides that was seen in the original 1.33:1 film transfer, allowing re-framing in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The result seems to vary from shot to shot but for the most part, very little is lost by re-framing the image. It looks to me like a lot of care was taken in doing this restoration.
I miss Lost in Space. It was a milestone in Brazilian television and has left millions of fans. It would be nice to see them again in High Definition and original dubbing.

Please, please release this complete series on blu-ray in a boxset so I can relive my youth watching this show on my HDTV, i'm begging you! Also, put the discs in protective, BD cases instead of those asasinine cardboard packages that instantly scratches the disc the first time you open it. That is all.
The difference is amazing. Picture is so clear, clean and crisp it's like you are in the same room. I loved this show as a kid and would definitely break down and buy the entire series if it was released once remastered on bluray. You can call us old for remembering this show but that also means we have the cash to buy this if released. *winks*

I think the restoration looks awesome! I'll be getting this when it comes out either on DVD or BluRay or both...It would be nice to have the whole series in a box set instead of having to wait for individual season sets. But Job Well Done, Mr Burns!
By the way... the 85 hours refers to the 83 original episodes PLUS the two one-hour versions of the "un-aired" Pilot ("No Place to Hide"). Those have ALSO been remastered -- along with the Hanna-Barbera "Lost in Space" cartoon from the 70s. As for the aspect ratio and other issues, we planned to distribute the 1:78 versions to cable television and VOD but are still debating what version is best on DVD or blu-ray. (And, "yes"... all Season Three trailers will be attached to the episodes!)
I will buy this on Blu Ray or memory card at 1080P. i will also buy this when a 4K (Ultra High Def 2160P) version is realised in the future as well. Loved this better than Trek. Grew up with it and will die with it.
I can't believe how great the show looks after being treated as it should have been done long ago. Please release the whole package in blue ray 16:9 format - absolutely fantastic - I would not hesitate at all to get the whole set over again. Let's see, I have had the show on super 8 recorded off the TV, VHS, and DVD - this really needs to be released for the 50th anniversary!!!! Whatever it takes - this needs to be done!!!!!!!!!!! And B9Greg agrees with me.
Love the remastering! Love the wide screen, also. I want this in wide screen BluRay. Would also like bonus material, and any scenes that were left out of the original dvd release. I would buy this in BluRay right now!
"Return From Outer Space" will be complete and totally restored. Even though the mid episode musical bumpers were transferred, we deleted them from the final versions because (believe it or not) most people complain that they interrupt the flow of the episode when it's on DVD. We are, however, leaving in the "Stay Tuned" bumpers at the end of all Season Three episodes, as they lead right into the Trailers.
A well deserved restoration for Lost in Space. I hope it will also be released in Brasil in Blu-ray with the 1.78:1 AR. Here the DVD boxes, including the original brazllian portuguese tracks, were a huge hit.
I would also dearly love to see a remastering for all the LIS episodes for the shows 50th anniversary but would prefer that the original aspect ratio of 4.3 be retained. The option for a widescreen format could be an added welcome bonus but not at too much further expense. Thanks Kevin for all your continuing hard work and dedication with this project, the fruits of which we will hopefully see in the not too distant future.
I agree, I'd buy the whole series in one box set as well whatever the cost. I also agree with the earlier comment that the show was presented in 4:3 ratio because our TVs back then were a box. Well, this is 2013. We don't have box TVs anymore. If we can have a wider picture and it was originally available and not seen until now, then lets watch it with the wide screen now.
Thanks to all those who have put so much work in on this. Regarding packaging: If it's decided to go with gadget packaging (i.e. the robot), is there any way that another set could be offered in a space-saving boxed set? With so many discs, I simply don't have the room for a Cylon head or the B-9 on my shelf, as much as I would love them. I'd even pay more for space saving packaging, especially if the episode titles are included on each of the discs should I need to move them to space-saving wallets. Thanks again.
Looks like it is time for our household to finally get a HD TV set. Want to be able to see Lost in Space (and certainly a certain "Guy") to the best advantage. Thanks to the powers that be for getting this process started, and looking forward to seeing the final product on cable TV, and also to have the opportunity to get them on DVD or Blu-ray.
I am a huge Lost In Space fan. And I can't wait for this to be released on Blu-Ray. I have it already on DVD, but I do see quite a difference in the picture. Hope it is not too expensive.
I was watching Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea on METV last night - 3rd season color episode and even in standard definition it looks better than any LIS Season 2 or 3 episode previously released on DVD. Lost in Space and it's legacy deserve better treatment on home video. Please release on Bluray sooner rather than later.
I love this! Please release Lost in Space on Blu-Ray. The aspect ratio should be whatever the original film was. It was broadcast in 4:3, but obviously the camera captured more image area. Please show us the entire frame, do not crop it. Seeing more available width is great, but do not cut out what was always there. Any existing and new special features would be appreciated! Thanks!
WOW! Looks fantastic!!! Love the full frame, too...who knows what we might get to see with the wider aspect ratio?! Just hope if it's done in Blu-Ray, that they offer a separate music track! (Yes, I know, they released several CD's with original music, but the CD version of the score in "The Reluctant Stowaway" has a slower tempo and slightly different orchestrations from the screen version!) Hope this HD release comes about for real!

OMG!!! I've been waiting for this to be remastered into HD Bluray!! It looks absolutely incredible!! Clear, crisp detail and the wide screen version just makes it all the better. More adjusted to today's TVs. Pleeeeeeese make this available for us to buy!! I'll take 2! I always buy a backup for my favorite shows. Maybe some cool cast commentaries? Lost footage? Bloopers? New cast interviews? Secrets of the Robot? Love to see our favorite shows given the HD treatment!!!
Thanks for posting these incredible transfers! This is something fans have wanted for so long. I am surprised how good it looks in 1.78:1. I am worried about cropping though and I always prefer OAR. It would be nice to have both versions, but if I selected one I would go with 4:3. The 50th anniversary is two years out - I hope we seen these sooner. Thanks again.
2.....i had yesterday emailed Revelation films in UK who did these to see if they were doing LIS. No was the reply and they told me the original films were lost meaning no HD, ever. I didn't accept this, google search and within 5 mins i found your HD test and the news I have been waiting so long to see. Reading your posts I was stoked to learn so much more. I am a purist and don't want to miss out on anything so want to see the 4 x 3 with nothing cut away.....

Always watch in original aspect ratio, changing it will crop the image either way...

The original film elements appear to have some picture information available at the sides that was seen in the original 1.33:1 film transfer, allowing re-framing in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The result seems to vary from shot to shot but for the most part, very little is lost by re-framing the image. It looks to me like a lot of care was taken in doing this restoration.

I miss Lost in Space. It was a milestone in Brazilian television and has left millions of fans. It would be nice to see them again in High Definition and original dubbing.

Please, please release this complete series on blu-ray in a boxset so I can relive my youth watching this show on my HDTV, i'm begging you! Also, put the discs in protective, BD cases instead of those asasinine cardboard packages that instantly scratches the disc the first time you open it. That is all.
The difference is amazing. Picture is so clear, clean and crisp it's like you are in the same room. I loved this show as a kid and would definitely break down and buy the entire series if it was released once remastered on bluray. You can call us old for remembering this show but that also means we have the cash to buy this if released. *winks*

I think the restoration looks awesome! I'll be getting this when it comes out either on DVD or BluRay or both...It would be nice to have the whole series in a box set instead of having to wait for individual season sets.

By the way... the 85 hours refers to the 83 original episodes PLUS the two one-hour versions of the "un-aired" Pilot ("No Place to Hide"). Those have ALSO been remastered -- along with the Hanna-Barbera "Lost in Space" cartoon from the 70s. As for the aspect ratio and other issues, we planned to distribute the 1:78 versions to cable television and VOD but are still debating what version is best on DVD or blu-ray. (And, "yes"... all Season Three trailers will be attached to the episodes!)
I will buy this on Blu Ray or memory card at 1080P. i will also buy this when a 4K (Ultra High Def 2160P) version is realised in the future as well. Loved this better than Trek. Grew up with it and will die with it.
I am very excited by the new 1.78.1 widescreen ratio. It's like seeing it all brand new.

I can't believe how great the show looks after being treated as it should have been done long ago. Please release the whole package in blue ray 16:9 format - absolutely fantastic - I would not hesitate at all to get the whole set over again. Let's see, I have had the show on super 8 recorded off the TV, VHS, and DVD - this really needs to be released for the 50th anniversary!!!! Whatever it takes - this needs to be done!!!!!!!!!!! And B9Greg agrees with me.
Love the remastering! Love the wide screen, also. I want this in wide screen BluRay. Would also like bonus material, and any scenes that were left out of the original dvd release. I would buy this in BluRay right now!
"Return From Outer Space" will be complete and totally restored. Even though the mid episode musical bumpers were transferred, we deleted them from the final versions because (believe it or not) most people complain that they interrupt the flow of the episode when it's on DVD. We are, however, leaving in the "Stay Tuned" bumpers at the end of all Season Three episodes, as they lead right into the Trailers.
A well deserved restoration for Lost in Space. I hope it will also be released in Brasil in Blu-ray with the 1.78:1 AR. Here the DVD boxes, including the original brazllian portuguese tracks, were a huge hit.
I'm all in. I'd love to be able to buy remastered version of all episodes.
I would also dearly love to see a remastering for all the LIS episodes for the shows 50th anniversary but would prefer that the original aspect ratio of 4.3 be retained. The option for a widescreen format could be an added welcome bonus but not at too much further expense. Thanks Kevin for all your continuing hard work and dedication with this project, the fruits of which we will hopefully see in the not too distant future.
I agree, I'd buy the whole series in one box set as well whatever the cost. I also agree with the earlier comment that the show was presented in 4:3 ratio because our TVs back then were a box. Well, this is 2013. We don't have box TVs anymore. If we can have a wider picture and it was originally available and not seen until now, then lets watch it with the wide screen now.
Thanks to all those who have put so much work in on this. Regarding packaging: If it's decided to go with gadget packaging (i.e. the robot), is there any way that another set could be offered in a space-saving boxed set? With so many discs, I simply don't have the room for a Cylon head or the B-9 on my shelf, as much as I would love them. I'd even pay more for space saving packaging, especially if the episode titles are included on each of the discs should I need to move them to space-saving wallets. Thanks again.

Looks like it is time for our household to finally get a HD TV set. Want to be able to see Lost in Space (and certainly a certain "Guy") to the best advantage. Thanks to the powers that be for getting this process started, and looking forward to seeing the final product on cable TV, and also to have the opportunity to get them on DVD or Blu-ray.

I am a huge Lost In Space fan. And I can't wait for this to be released on Blu-Ray. I have it already on DVD, but I do see quite a difference in the picture. Hope it is not too expensive.
I was watching Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea on METV last night - 3rd season color episode and even in standard definition it looks better than any LIS Season 2 or 3 episode previously released on DVD. Lost in Space and it's legacy deserve better treatment on home video. Please release on Bluray sooner rather than later.
I love this! Please release Lost in Space on Blu-Ray. The aspect ratio should be whatever the original film was. It was broadcast in 4:3, but obviously the camera captured more image area. Please show us the entire frame, do not crop it. Seeing more available width is great, but do not cut out what was always there. Any existing and new special features would be appreciated! Thanks!
WOW! Looks fantastic!!! Love the full frame, too...who knows what we might get to see with the wider aspect ratio?! Just hope if it's done in Blu-Ray, that they offer a separate music track! (Yes, I know, they released several CD's with original music, but the CD version of the score in "The Reluctant Stowaway" has a slower tempo and slightly different orchestrations from the screen version!) Hope this HD release comes about for real!
In Brazil, there 's a lot of people that grew up watching the amazing adventures of Will Robinson, Doc Smith and the Robot, and dreaming with space voyages. Please, remember us. I agree with marco1962a that the original brazilian portuguese dubbing from AIC is great. The 1.78:1 looks very impressive.

OMG!!! I've been waiting for this to be remastered into HD Bluray!! It looks absolutely incredible!! Clear, crisp detail and the wide screen version just makes it all the better. More adjusted to today's TVs. Pleeeeeeese make this available for us to buy!! I'll take 2! I always buy a backup for my favorite shows. Maybe some cool cast commentaries? Lost footage? Bloopers? New cast interviews? Secrets of the Robot? Love to see our favorite shows given the HD treatment!!!

Thanks for posting these incredible transfers! This is something fans have wanted for so long. I am surprised how good it looks in 1.78:1. I am worried about cropping though and I always prefer OAR. It would be nice to have both versions, but if I selected one I would go with 4:3. The 50th anniversary is two years out - I hope we seen these sooner. Thanks again.

2.....i had yesterday emailed Revelation films in UK who did these to see if they were doing LIS. No was the reply and they told me the original films were lost meaning no HD, ever. I didn't accept this, google search and within 5 mins i found your HD test and the news I have been waiting so long to see. Reading your posts I was stoked to learn so much more.
I am a purist and don't want to miss out on anything so want to see the 4 x 3 with nothing cut away.....
