Stu you prob wont get time to read this but I think you're awesome and I really hope you are successful with your training centre. My son is 2 yrs old and he says, "I'm a builder" all the time as he looks over my shoulder as I religiously watch your videos. Who knows eh, you might be teaching my son some day (as long as I can afford it! I'm only a decorator you know 😂😂) He is bloody good with his mega blocks!
Ah love this comment rob don’t worry mate all I’m doing with pricing is getting advice from experienced people and I will go with that. I’ve made mistakes pricing things before. This is training, I will get more out of producing great brickys than taking their money.
Every time I watch a video like this I realize just how much I don’t know in life. There is just so much knowledge out there people have. Very interesting to see, now I’m starting to understand why houses can cost so much.
Finally I’ve seen a proper builder doing it right like we do down south and cutting the cavity out to continue it into the extension. Another guy from up your end I call tattoos man don’t bother. I’ve asked him why and how does he stop the damp from tracking across to the inside wall and he don’t reply. Far play stu you know what your doing. If we didn’t cut the cavity out down here in south in Newbury Berkshire building control would have it down and start again. 👌
There’s not many tradesmen who’d show you there days work, this guy has nowt to hide. I’ll bet every tradesman, wether it be a bricklayer, carpenter, electrician, plumber or whatever, will tell you that there a real tradesman. It’s all about the job they finish what they started. It shows when someone takes pride in the work they do,no matter what job they do. I’d have confidence in hiring this guy, takes pride in his craft,is respectful to his customers and knows what he’s doing. As for the people who’ve thumbed this video down,I’ll get back to you (maybe).
In the summertime, bricks were hosed down before laying. Coring holes were left out on the Tray-Damp to allow the clearing of the cavity until the wall was one lift high, 5ft thereafter cavity battens were used which climbed with the wall until the next row of ties was reached when it was moved up and placed on the ties. This does not apply today as cavities have insulation installed and the mortar does not fall to the bottom of the cavity. Good videos and nice brickwork!
Really enjoying the videos lads, I did my college years ago and worked on site for a couple of years with a large gang, the top man though was employing keen young lads and paying them pittance, had a girlfriend at the time and needed money so walked away to go work on telehandler. I'm just getting back into private work now on the trowel for myself and am finding these videos very useful as I'm rusty with being off the trowel, keep them coming 👍
I liked all the extra little bits of information you thought to add in this video. Things like if you were going to joint it out or rake it out; what the style of the brick used was and other such bits of information. I find that kind of thing fascinating.
Looks spot on that stu, loads better raked out too. Walled similar bricks to those they were like sponges! We dipped them in water before you lay one down, but that was with lime mortar. Cheers 👍
Stew watching your video and your the only one I’ve seen on here that does it correct and cut out the cavity. I looked at construction with Kieran and asked him why he doesn’t cut cavities put a tray over a RSJ on a single story extension and why no tray under copings on a parapit wall. Ten minutes later he disarmed the comments. Your a pleasure to watch a see it done properly 🙏👌👍
In Australia we are constantly working in 30 - 40 degrees C ( 80 - 100 F) in summer, so we start at 5.30 am and finish about 2.30 pm , also depending on the type of brick we are using we also wet them down plus the mortar is a lot wetter ( which takes some getting used to ) but it means you cant put down a long bed and you have to be quicker. We also have to point up every course with a marshalltown jointer but generally a piece of 20mm electrical pipe is used but you have to have full joints then a stiffish brush. You get a surprisingly good finish, though you wouldn't think so at first. I will also send you some pictures of a different type of profile which is a lot easier and less time consuming to set up and use. P.S - please do a twisted brick and a half pier. keep up the good work mate. Cheers.
Was glad of this video this morning - did my first ever at-home (as opposed to the training course) bricklaying on Sat, putting down the first courses of my extension. Lije you, the mortar was going off at an insane rate - thought I'd done something wrong and ended up chucking more than I used (because I'm VERY slow!)
stu crompton great choice of brick. Looks like reclaimed brick but definitely adds a bit of quality. And those joints look real sharp. Great work guys. You given KC a day off? Best wishes, Alamin.
Love the videos I’ve just finished my level 1 brick course and start an apprenticeship soon hopefully watched you videos about a month after starting and haven’t stopped since💜 could you do a video about tips and tricks please would love to know some of your techniques

Bucket of water and dunk the bricks as you go or hose the down couple of times in the day so they don't suck the mud dry. Helps me when we lay those dry one in the hot heat of the day
Good to see an Artisan Bricky doing the job right-I wonder how many short cuts, missed out or not even installed in a new build-wont be anything like this thats for sure!
That type of brick are a nightmare especially when its hot! We dip em in a bucket of water as we lay em 😉 what's the idea with the damp behind the wallstarters, Not seen that before??
Looking at the bricks you are using with a flat and a cupped side, now I'm not certain but I think they are supposed to go cup side down to get a good hold and decrease the overall weight versus the adding more mortar to fill the void and adding more weight, plus the potential to hold more water inside each brick cup side up.
Clearly very talented, but what would really help us novices is if you could provide a bit more some explanation along the way. For example, the purpose of the starter things and how to put in the DPC etc. Thanks
Can I ask ? When u joined the new brick to the old house you cut and took out the first bricks 🧱 of cavity wall showing the insulation and then joined with wall ties Either side , can I ask what the reason is for cutting out the bricks exposing the cavity wall ,? Most just tie into that. So with u I’m sure your the best out their.
Great job going on there mate 👍 I prefer the raked out finish personally it makes the brick work look more refined for me. Looks like you've got a good young helper there he's doing a superb job. Where's KC the silicone kid ? 😀

Hot weather...soak bricks with water before laying...and keep muck in large plastic tubs stops it drying out...liked the video.

28 degrees Stu , come down here in southern Spain in August ! nearer 40 degrees laying !
Il come down but only to watch you men work 😂
Hi Stu a tip bucket of water and let your bricks swim than the morter will not lose water as fast . nice job 👍 Pat from Belgium

Looking mint, I'd go with raked out if it was my build..
Yeah James looks to bring the character of the brick out more. Glad customer picked that finish over jointed
Thanks
Excellent
Great vid Stu soak the bricks in water
Wetting bricks can cause Different shades in motar
Causes efflorescence alot of the time aswell, I tend to add some hydrated lime to the muck so it goes off alot slower .
@@leemoore107 what sort of gauge would you use pal
@@mickythebricky9634 with a handmade brick that's soft I would use a 6:1:1 sand cement lime .
@@leemoore107 ill give that recipe a try on the next one pal 👍
Not buttering the blocks either side when laying the last block on the line, tut tut , schoolboy error 😂😂
good job my friend
Still not too keen on insulation within the cavity, in my day it was always kept clear to let air circulate
So successful dear
That type of brick are a nightmare especially when its hot! We dip em in a bucket of water as we lay em 😉 what's the idea with the damp behind the wallstarters, Not seen that before??
Continuing the external leaf round having opened up the cavity to the new extension.... absolutely none to my mind.

Definitely raked
Stu might be stupid question why do you cut the 100mm cavity in the existing house
So that you can continue the house cavity through to the new extension
Looks good I’d advise to do more did thes
The technology of unloading bricks from the truck is amazing. Where are the wooden pallets?
That heat fairly dries up the mortar
Lol yes it does and it keeps a labor very busy and in the winter you can not get it to setup as fast as you would like .
28 C is a mild day in Oz :-)
