  • In this video I give you the answers to the number one question I am asked about video encoding - What are the best and optimal settings to use to convert a Bluray 1080p video to H.265 HEVC in Handbrake.
    Find out more about these settings on the corresponding article on The Webernets HERE - www.theweberne...
    Use these settings if you have a 4K UHD TV and a reasonably new media player (Like an Apple TV 4K). If you have a 1080 HD TV and an older media player you will need to use these settings - www.theweberne...

    The code you need to place in the advance options is below:
    strong-intra-smoothing=0:rect=0:aq-mode=1:rd=4:psy-rd=0.75:psy-rdoq=4.0:rdoq-level=1:rskip=2
    What does this code mean/do?
    1. strong-intra-smoothing=0:
    This parameter controls the amount of smoothing applied to intra-predicted (I-frame) blocks. A value of 0 means no smoothing is applied, which can result in sharper details but also a higher risk of artifacts in the image.
    2. rect=0:
    This parameter relates to the motion estimation process. It specifies the block partitioning method for inter-predicted (P/B-frame) blocks. A value of 0 means that the encoder will consider both square and rectangular block shapes for more precise motion estimation.
    3. aq-mode=1:
    AQ stands for Adaptive Quantization, which adjusts the level of quantization (the process that reduces the accuracy of the video signal) based on the complexity of the content. This parameter sets the mode of adaptive quantization. A value of 1 enables adaptive quantization, which can improve visual quality by allocating more bits to areas with more detail.
    4. rd=4:
    RD stands for Rate-Distortion optimization. It balances the trade-off between bitrate (file size) and video quality. This parameter controls the level of optimization. A higher value, such as 4, indicates a more thorough analysis of different encoding options to find the optimal balance.
    5. psy-rd=0.75:
    Psy-RD is a technique that combines perceptual and rate-distortion optimization. It takes into account human visual perception to allocate bits more efficiently. This parameter sets the strength of the perceptual optimization. A higher value, such as 0.75, means a stronger emphasis on visual perception.
    6. psy-rdoq=4.0:
    Psy-RDOQ (Psycho-visual Rate-Distortion Optimization Quantization) is another perceptual optimization technique. It adjusts the quantization process based on visual perception. This parameter sets the strength of Psy-RDOQ. A higher value, like 4.0, means a stronger emphasis on perceptual optimization during quantization.
    7. rdoq-level=1:
    RDOQ (Rate-Distortion Optimization Quantization) adjusts the quantization process based on rate-distortion optimization. This parameter sets the RDOQ level, with 1 being a moderate level of optimization.
    8. rskip=2:
    RSKIP is a technique that allows skipping the encoding process for some blocks if they are similar to previously encoded blocks. This parameter controls the RSKIP level. A value of 2 indicates more blocks will be considered for potential skipping, which can improve encoding speed but might reduce compression efficiency.

    For those asking about doing this for 4k, I just did one with the same settings. Just have to change 2 things. When in "Dimensions" Tab, change resolution limit to none. Also change the RF to a value of 22 or lower. I noticed at 24 there was artifacting around motion and weird discoloration on complex surfaces. I mean, you cannot notice it too much unless your picky like me. At a certain distance you will not notice it at all. So if your looking for great size, stick with 24 RF. But size did not increase too much with RF 22. I will be playing more with settings and edit this post if I discover more. But I have to say many thanks to The Webernets for positing his advanced options. These settings completely cleanup the picture, especially in dark scenes while giving a fantastic file size.

      Hi Chuck, thanks for your comment. Im glad you are getting pleasing results using the 1080P settings. I should have some 4K UHD source material to play with soon, so an article is definitely on the way. Given the frame rate and picture size I expect there could be more optimal settings for 4K than my 1080p numbers however. I appreciate your feedback regarding constant quality and will factor that in during my research 👍

Still messing around, but that was clearly my best result for 4k compression and quality so far. The best part about this, is the bitrate to run the file is under 5MB for a 4k stream on plex, makes things wayyyy lighter

Only thing I'd add for the viewers is if you have a good video card like mine, it's MUCH faster if you select "H.265 10-bit NVEnc" - encoding went from ~30-25fps to ~240-255fps. I had a few questions if you dont mind?
    1. Why do you disable foreign subtitle burning? I find it so annoying to watch a rip which doesnt have subtitled foreign dialogue e.g. Return of the Jedi Jabba speach.
    2. Why dont you pass through the audio track? On your DVD video i learned to pass through AC3 which ive been doing religiously - for my DVDs
    3. Why dont you pass through the metadata on the summary tab?
    4. Does it matter what region my Bluray comes from? Should i build a separate profile for PAL and NTSC?

      Hi, in glad you like the video. 1: its just a demonstration, if i was encoding a video for my own use that needed subtitles I would encode them. I have other videos on this channel that ahow how to do it if you need a hand. 2: There are great savings in file size to be had by compressing the audio. Its the same as compressing the video. The whole point of my turorials is smallest possible filesize without quality loss, and for my ears compressing a 1500k audio stream down to 448k is just as good. 3: again, its just a demonstration where I am trying to get the smallest possible file size. If you want to retain metadata by all means pass it through. 4: These setting will convert any video to progressive, so it doesnt matter what region your source is. Hope this helps 👍🏻

While I would say I'm fairly technical, the variety of media formats, encoders (HW & SW), quality settings and so on make this process somewhat akin to black magic. @@halloweengamer3487 You would have to check Handbrakes documentation or forums to see if your hardware is supported. I am not really up on the hardware specific presets, but I would imagine they are fine tuned for speed. The best way to determine in my opinion is to always have a source video handy for testing. Cut a 2-3 minute slice out of a movie that shows high speed action and dark scenes, and test each of the presets and compare the quality of the results and the encode time.

    Can you elaborate on encoder level 5.1 as a preference for 1080p content? This should really only be used for the most highest quality 4k content I was led to believe.

      @thewebernets  Рік тому +3

      Hi, level 5.0/1/2 are the highest for 1080p and allow plenty of room for for higher bit rates, frame rates etc… Level 6.0/1/2 is where you need to be for 4k. Level 4.0/1/2 has been the standard for years as this was the highest that players of the day could handle. New players will play level 5 and 6 with no issues.

    • @thewebernets
      @thewebernets  4 місяці тому

      Constant quality can make or break an encode, and it's different for every system. Videos I compressed 10 years ago that looked gorgeous on my 42 1080P TV look AWFUL now on my 75" 4K TV because I pushed the CQ too far. Gee I think I was using 26-28 in those days. But to answer your question, yes, you can reduce the file size significantly, but the quality suffers. Compressing video is always a sliding scale between file size vs quality. You just have to find that sweet spot for your system. Great question!

      Hi - Glad you found the video useful. Regarding the extra code, It's hard to explain the parameters in a way that makes sense and is meaningful to someone who isn't familiar with the workings of the codec. In short, it fine tunes specific parts of the encode process and the methods used for better results. If you really want to know what each command means, here is a breakdown:
      strong-intra-smoothing=0: This disables a feature that smooths out blocky artifacts in intra frames.
      rect=0: This disables rectangular motion compensation.
      aq-mode=1: This enables adaptive quantization, which adjusts the quantization strength for each block in the video frame.
      rd=4: This sets the rate-distortion optimization level to 4, which balances compression efficiency with encoding speed.
      psy-rd=0.75: This sets the strength of the psychovisual rate distortion optimization, which takes into account human perception in the encoding process.
      psy-rdoq=4.0: This sets the strength of the psychovisual rate distortion optimized quantization, which adjusts the quantization parameter based on visual importance.
      rdoq-level=1: This sets the RDOQ (Rate-Distortion Optimized Quantization) level to 1.
      rskip=2: This enables ME (motion estimation) refinement.

      @@thewebernets wow! the extra code was really recreating the movie. many thanks for the detailed explanation.
      i have a few more dummy questions, if you don't mind.
      - while encoding, running another software (for example, watching movies, playing games) probably increases the time, but most importantly, does it affect the encode quality
      Is it better to just leave the computer for only handbrake?
      - while most movies are down to around 1-2 GB (and very good quality), some old movies can be very large (9 GB). is this normal?
      I wonder if there is a problem when scaling 4:3 or because they are black and white? should we try another settings or choose x264 for these movies?

    • @thewebernets
      @thewebernets  Рік тому

      @@olcayceran484 Always happy to answer if I can. Regarding question one, Technically no, it shouldn't affect the encode, as it is basically a "mathematical equation" (in very loose terms) that the computer is processing. But with regard to your hardware, you are reducing its life span. Once you start putting load on your processor and those fans spin up, there is a physical toll on your computer. Since my very first encode article in....gee, 2014 maybe? My advice has always been to set the processing speed to "Very Slow", and let it run while you are sleeping. But it also goes the other way, if your computer is trying to encode, you might also find the movie you are watching at the same time stutters or hangs, spoiling that experience. Again, my advice is to set up your encodes when your day is over, and let it run while you sleep. You can also set Handbrake to shut your computer down once your encode is finished, that feature is built in for the same reason. Question 2, these settings are not optimised for upscaling a low resolution source file. Handbrake is expecting to compress 1080P video with these settings, so giving it a 480P or lower source file you are effectively asking it to compress the video "down" to a "higher" resolution. This is why you are having issues. Your settings need to be specific to the resolution you are working with. Regarding H.264 vs H.265, it depends on your player. If your media player can handle H.265 you can get that old video down to a ridiculously small size with zero quality loss. And in some cases, you can actually make the video look better using Handbrakes filters. I have written an article that you might find helpful on my website, and yes I should probably make a UA-cam video for that to. Im pretty sure this will give you the results you are looking for - www.thewebernets.com/2023/03/27/fix-bad-dvd-with-handbrake-on-mac-windows-and-linux-2023/

      when I said 4:3, I didn't actually mean 480p resolution. sorry, my bad. The movie is 1080p but not actually 1080p, it is 1080p with black bars on the sides, but I wonder could it be ignoring these bars and upscaling them again? for example, the movie on the waterfront (1954) is 8GB in size after encode. it could also be because the source video was pretty grainy. I've heard that the h265 codec is not very suitable for grainy videos. please correct me if i am wrong.
      I watch movies on 55" 4K TV.
      A 2 hour movie with the AMD RYZEN 5 5600x takes a little over 2 hours on average and I get really good quality with your settings.
      If I prefer gpu (3060Ti) instead of cpu, this time drops to 10 minutes with nvenc, but I am not sure if it will be as healthy as your settings.
      I don't prefer it because you say the slower the better quality. I trust your eyes more than my own, especially after the extra code explanation.

      mp4 can only handle one subtitle track, and it is either on or off all the time. The watcher cannot select this. With mkv, you can have multiple subtitles that the watcher can choose. This is nice when you have a track for just small bits of foreign language (forced) that you can turn on by default in the encode, as well as a full track for while the kids are sleeping or when they're especially noisy. And if you have a low power server, you can have text subtitles instead of bluray format image files, which are much less taxing to transcode.

      Hi, Im glad you like the video. I wouldn't rely on what you see in the preview tab. Download the free program called Avidemux and slice off 2 minutes of your source video, and encode it completely. Then watch the results. You can then decide if you need to apply more or less filters, then once you have it right you can do the whole movie.

      This. Every preview I tried looked like trash, no matter the settings. Until I saw your 264 encode video, I was using settings that resulted in 25-35% of the original file size. Now I'm around 15-20% with multiple audio tracks (DTS-HD-MA, DTS-HD, and stereo, all passthrough when available) and a full subtitle track. I now have a 265 queued up for comparison.

    Was that bluray source untouched before Medio info? Surely the studios don't use make mkv to encode their blurays lol? Sorry can I get some clarification why it says it was encoded with with make mkv in media info when it was the untouched bluray file, I thought bluray was normally mpg 2 ts files or something I realise it's gone through decryption at this point and that maybe likely while it has changed container etc to an mkv to make it compatible with whatever encoding software is used. Just curious bud good video other than that! 😊

    • @thewebernets
      @thewebernets  Рік тому +1

      Hi Jeff, The reason the source is in MKV is 2-fold. Firstly, Handbrake straight out of the box won't rip DRM protected discs, secondly identifying which M2TS files on the disc are the movie is not always easy, and again Mediainfo won't report on DRM protected files, so knowing exactly how big the movie is complete with the multiple audio and subtitle tracks is difficult. And knowing how big the movie file is to start with is important to the point of the video. Make MKV will rip the disk and decrypt it, and give you a 1 to 1 copy of the movie in a format you can work with, also making it easy to utilise Mediainfo to see your start point. Hope this clears the confussion.

    Hello @TheWebernets, I have a question. I did two film conversion projects that were approximately 2 hours each and had two very different results. The first 28.8 Gb video during the conversion reduced to 2.45 Gb, but the second 10.6 Gb video only reduced it to 3.5 Gb. Why did the second converted video weigh more, when the first weighed almost triple the second?

    • @thewebernets
      @thewebernets  8 місяців тому +1

      Great Question! Firstly, you are starting with two very different file sizes, and if they are the same frame size, frame rate and duration, one likely already has more compression applied to it. You aren't starting with equal source material.
      But let's say you did start with equal source material, you would still end up with different file sizes. This is due to choosing Constant Quality over a fixed bit rate, and the amount of details in each scene/frame of your movie. Scenes that don't have many details, and include lots of blank open areas such as skies are more compressible, and still remain high quality. Whereas scenes in a library with hundreds of books for example has a lot more detail, and can't be compressed as much.. Using constant quality ensures that the quality of each frame is constant regardless of its complexity, and it achieves this by varying the level of compression, this is how two different movies of exactly the same length end up with different file sizes. Cartoons and animation will generally always be more compressible than live action video.

    Personally I use DVDFAB to convert my blu-rays to x265 apparently it would be necessary to encode with the CPU to avoid loss of quality, I use my RTX3070 with CUDA which is much faster than by CPU, When I test the quality of the image everything is perfect even the background for the details distant compared to the blu-ray without compression so I do not understand, I specify that I always choose the high quality option at 12000kbps in bit rate. In short, even if it is better by CPU it is because it is very slight in difference or nothing, why waste 6 hours in CPU when the GPU gives an almost identical rendering in 15 minutes.

      265 was kinda optimised for GPU over 264 with cpu. Using cpu for 265 just slows it down a bit more, as the compression techniques are more efficient when delivered by the GPU which is built for graphical solutions. Defo use that Rtx card I say.

I think a far safer level to go is a "Constant Quality" of 18 if your goal is to get the best video quality while also reducing the storage size. He never really stated what his goal was in the video. Reducing size to a specific range? Finding a sweet spot between that range and video quality. To me, retaining visual quality and retaining the best audio output (DTS-HD passthrough) is the most important thing. In 10 years 40TB hard drives will be selling for $100. At that point when you have your video library, the file size won't matter as much as how good the quality of the video/audio is.
