I took hurry up and wait as a critique on fans that try and solve the twists of episodes. Reece is like us, a fan that spends the whole episode trying to solve the twist, by noticing dumb details we think will be important but aren’t. And in the end when we think we’ve got it, it rug gets pulled out and we are so far off what’s actually happening. I quite enjoyed it!
@@UnleashTheGhouls I know that has been me on so many occasions, and watching him trying to figure it out I was piecing together the clues with him just too once again get it wrong lol
Pemberton - ' he could leave the planet with his abilities'. Could not agree more. He and Shearsmith are both criminally underrated. Total respect to both for their writing and acting. In Hurry up and Wait. Pemberton looks suspiciously like Mick Philpott.
Thank you so much for singling out the score of the utterly superb "How do You Plead", which is possibly my favourite episode (The Referee... coming second). It always amazes me that Christian Henson doesn't get nearly enough attention in the reviews - he's very much "the fifth Beatle" in this set-up, rethinking soundtracking from scratch with every episode just as Steve and Reece are with their genre experimentation. And as for "How do you Plead" itself - there simply are no words for how brilliant it is.
The biggest takeaway from the entire series is just how brilliant Pemberton and Shearsmith are as actors, especially Pemberton. Amazing range and sincerity
I believe that the inclusion of Jesus in Last Night of the Proms just adds to the message. They killed and buried the Second Coming, because they were so full of pride of their nationalism, they just didn't care. Great review of the series!
Except it was the senile old man who killed him and the anti-Brexit Reece's character gave him a subsequent stabbing. Steve's character was proudly British and pro-brexit yet he suggested Yousef was probably just hungry. Nice that you completely missed that lol.
Pomp and circumstance playing while a dead body is rolled into a British flag was funny and disturbing,a good episode, this could have been cliched with terrible writing in the wrong hands, original with good balance, suitably strange and not obvious ✌️❤️🇬🇧
Great breakdown and review! I'm one of the few people who genuinely loves every episode of this series to bits, sometimes enjoying rewatches even more than the first viewing. Wuthering Heist for me might be their funniest and that's saying something, I was in "tears of laughter" but still felt the shock of the gruesome moments. Simon Says is just an excellent Reece and Steve showcase with both of them on top form and the creepiest scene from the show ever that left me jaw-dropped. Lip Service blew me away with its reveal and the subtlety of it all, especially performance-wise. Hurry Up and Wait captured the awkwardness brilliantly with excellent performances all round, particularly from Donna Preston, Dunbar and a really sympathetic Reece, I also think the fake-out of a heavily built-up twist was hilarious. How Do You Plead is classic them. A beautifully, intricately woven story with really interesting characters and superb music and direction. And Last Night of the Proms also blew me away but for different reasons. The mirror it boldly puts up to our country with realism rather than a biased view i found really resonating. Personally, I don't think the "Jesus" plot takes anything away as to me it's further reflection on how these people react to a "foreigner". Both Penny and Brian fetishize him with Brian even accusing him of being a terrorist. Mick treats him more like a stray animal than a human and when he is killed Dawn is far more concerned for her father than the man dying on her floor. Then the way they all excuse their actions because of "patriotism" is just so unsettling. Loved the series and also loved you talking about it!
Lip Service is also my favourite in the series too but agree there are several great episodes. You can see that Guillem Morales who directs a lot of episodes shares Steve and Reece's love of horror (and indeed Christian Henson creates great scores Would love to see you do more vlogs on Inside no 9
The third episode had a plot change that was sudden and spectacular, impressive. It becomes an espionage drama out of nowhere, great writing, really original ✌️❤️🇬🇧
I think the point of the Jesus character was missed here. I think he was introduced to represent immigrants and how they can be actual forces of positive change, in a lot of cases saving the stalling economy and helping flourish the country. much like a second coming of Jesus. and the episode highlights the differing attitudes towards immigration via the different family members. you have those who outright deny them, kick them out, those who are so performative in their support but then do nothing to actually help anyone and therefore being rendered even more offensive and then those who do actually embrace immigrants and recognise what good they can bring. the episode even ends with an emphasis on the idea of an "English home" highlighting that outside of the wife, all other members have an England first attitude when it comes down to it.
That’s interesting and kind of makes me feel better about the episode. I just took it at face value and it was really upsetting. Several episodes have made me cry because of how touching or sad they were. This is the only one that made me cry because of how messed up it was.
He most certainly does, as the fabulous Count Scarlioni! And also as Richard the Lionheart in The Crusade! As a Whovian, I'm ashamed I missed this - Connor
I do have a soft spot for Series 6. It was the first series I watched live, and although it’s not perfect, I still love it (as I do with every series) Wuthering Heist is one I have so much fun with, and having watched Reservoir Dogs since, I like it more (P.S Reservoir Dogs bloody rules) Simon Says is my favourite of the season, just a perfect distillation of fandom, especially resonating for me since I’m a part of the doctor who fan. I’ll be honest, I don’t love Lip Service, and I think it’s just a standard number 9, but doesn’t push the boat out for me. Hurry Up And Wait I feel the same about as I do with Lip Service How Do You Plead is an absolutely fantastic horror episode with a killer performance from Jacobi Last Night Of The Proms is just strange, but I do enjoy it, mainly because I enjoy making Brexit jokes and taking the piss out of it, so I can enjoy it on a guilty pleasure level I guess, although I know lots of people who didn’t like it because either, they’re fed up with Brexit, or it’s too personal, and I totally respect that. Great review though.
Lip Service was one of my favourite episodes ever. S6 was a strong season overall, with the exception of Last Night Of The Proms. Five minutes into that last episode, I thought "this is like something Legz Akimbo would make". At that point, I genuinely became convinced that the episode was going to do a big switcheroo (the way Dead Line or Death Be Not Proud did), and that Brian and Mick were going to turn out to be Ollie Plimsolls and Dave Parkes, and that the episode was going to turn into League Of Gentleman does The Goes Wrong Show or something. But it wasn't to be, sadly. Of the 37 episodes of Inside No.9 so far, I would rank Proms at #37. Awful. It made Last Gasp look like The 12 Days Of Christine.
Great analysis on these six episodes. I believe all of them to be at least 6/10 or better except for “Last Night of the Proms“ which I think is one of those shows worst episodes ever. I get the Jesus style character reference and purpose, but it was just so ham fisted in its conveyance. Usually, Shearsmith and Pemberton are more subtle in their intentions and trust that their audience is intelligent enough to figure out what they’re going for without needing to beat them over the head with a rubber mallet explaining things. It’s honestly an episode that could have been shorter and placed higher up in the season; thus leaving a 45 minute finale to “How Do You Plead” to flesh out the characters a bit more. Still another great season!
Tom and Gerri Is the peak of this Series, as a massive Fan I've watch everyone on release. Tom and Gerri was so well scripted, Well acted (as they all are). The depth of the episode, complete mystery within the story, Great ending and incredible Twist, I don't see it being spoken about enough. This series is quality! Let me know what your favorite episode is, and why. Some very good honerable mentions being: To have and to hold and Misdirection.
Tom and gerri, riddle of the sphinx and 12 days of Christine are my top 3. The quality of the twists just emphasise how well they are at writing and can drop in little hints which you don’t pick up on until rewatching. Tom and gerri left me questioning who was real and the directing of every scene was excellent. The constant twists in riddle of the sphinx and the cleverness behind it is the reason why I love inside no.9 so much. And finally 12 days of Christine has such a smart and different plot which you can understand even more after each watch. I don’t think this season has any episodes that can compete with even my top 8, there were 2 episodes with good twists which I find important for an inside no 9 episode. But I still love inside no 9 and greatly appreciate shearsmith and pembertons writing capability’s and hope series 7 will have the best episode yet. Hopefully packed full of murders, comedy and twists!

Great Recap! I had very high expectations for this season although I do think it's one of the weakest seasons overall (although better than Season 5). Whilst Lip Service and Simon Says were superb and for me, classic Inside No. 9 and How Do You Plead was great for the horror episode they delve into once a season, I think others felt lacking. Both Wuthering Heists and Hurry up and Wait had left me wanting more, they felt incomplete and I would have loved to see darker endings. As for the last episode... yeah... let's not talk about that. Here's to season 7!
Thank you for this video recap and review. I enjoyed all 6 episodes in this series, although I think that the final 2 episodes should have been the other way around. Last Night of the Proms is a great episode, especially if you are aware of the stories surrounding Jesus Christ, the Second Coming, and how England claims to be a Christian country. However, How Do You Plead is definitely the stronger of the two episodes and would make a fantastic season finale. Thankfully, there is no story arc, so I can watch them in any order I like :)

Agreed - I think Lip Service was really good and by far the best of this series, everything else was either pretty good but not as strong as previous series, or absolutely terrible (Last Night of the Proms might be my least favourite IN9 episode ever :(...) There are also a few jokes creeping in to a number of episodes that border on homophobic. I still really enjoy the show and looked forward to it each week but this was not their strongest run!
I think those jokes can be done at least tastefully, Pemberton and Shearsmith have often portrayed characters of many sexualities over their careers, and even working with the openly gay Mark Gatiss since before their success erupted, I'm sure they never have any malice or contempt in their writing :)
