I always understood the laugh was supposed to be the way it was. How other people still miss the point of it so badly confuses me.

Tidus left an impression... love him or hate him. He's memorable. You know what perfect, serious protagonists are? Forgettable! Perfectly idealized characters aren't relatable. Tidus however is like people we know in real life. He's a hero because he overcomes, not because he's just so awesome.

Especially on a second playthrough, Tidus really does strike me as more mature than he comes across as. It's just that the combination of the narrative, the fish-out-of-water situation, and being (un)intentionally left in the dark by the rest of the party dupes the player into thinking our sun-named hero is the immature fool among solemn adults. But once the awful truths have been blown wide open, suddenly, first impressions of Tidus are thrown right out the window and you realize that he was more mature and wise about life in Spira than most other people.
And your voice acting really conveys that very well!
It helps that, fighting-style wise, speedy sword melee with time magic, he is my absolute favorite character!
I hope somebody gave you a prop Brotherhood in commemoration for your great work!

@@JATactor hello there Mr.Arnold, never listen to anyone who doesn't understand the context! Your performance as Tidus has been stuck in my brain since 2003 on my first playthrough I loved the scene and many of my friends did as well. Wish you well and success in your endeavors general kenobi! Here's to wishing for one day a FFX-3 with tons of JAT content please

I personally liked Tidus because he was unique as a Final Fantasy protag. He was goofy and optimistic which was a nice change of pace after more solemn protagonists like Squall or Cloud etc.

You say that but you’re forgetting Zidane which has a similar personality to Tidus but just a bit immature, so I wouldn’t call him ‘Unique’. Heck I’d even say that Tidus’ character was inspired by Zidane.

I personally loved the scene. I feel like people are just ignorant about it because they don't know the whole story. I love FFX so much and I'm having a great time doing a Let's Play of it currently on my channel. I really wish more people would watch it though! If anyone wants to come check it out, I would be so grateful!

This was so interesting to listen to. I never get tired of you talking about FFX, James! FFX holds a very special place in my heart. I was 13 when it came out and it reminds me of long summer nights sitting up playing it with my friends... the carefree times :)
I'm 28 now. I'll always get that carefree feeling when I hear your voice!
Unless I hear you voicing Wooldor. Then I'm confused!

The people who hold the Tidus laugh up as this awkward thing are really just viewing the surface level of that scene.
    My opinion:
Tidus is trying desperately to keep his grip, as well as convey to Yuna (who literally has the weight of the world on her shoulders) that it will all be okay, somehow. He's not alright being met with constant doom and gloom (Lulu and Auron), outright silence (Kimahri), and everything being confusing (Wakka's explanations). Even if it's forced at first, he wants to seed a little more positivity back into himself as well as the people he finds himself with, so he just goes for it.
That's what that scene means to me. PS. I loved the transition from "cheesy forced laughter" to being genuinely happy.

Final Fantasy X and X-2 are the games that impacted my life as a child. The music inspired me to do the piano which I'm still doing 10 years later. The story touched me so hard that I created my own stories of many of my favorite characters with my friends. To this I love Tidus because so many things that he went through are emotional. First off, Jecht felt like an enemy to Tidus, but in the end, he's an alley to him. I had a couple of people who were like enemies to me and are now some of my closet friends. Three girls that I know who played FFX-2 became close to each other and are like sisters. I think the feedback of FF7 and FF8 lead to the creative of Tidus. If you look at it, people complained about Cloud being dull and Squall being a jerk, so I think Square Enix wanted a more lighthearted character, and in my opinion, it work. People tell me that I'm like and act like Tidus which makes me happy since I love the character. I love almost every character of the FF franchise, but Tidus and Yuna still continue to be my favorite because as a kid who played this game at 3 years old who is now 17(same age as Tidus right now), their stories are like real life and FFX and X-2 will always remain in my memories. I hope FFX-3 will help because I still want more out of Final Fantasy X and have a true perfect ending to the FFX story. Thank you James Arnold Taylor for your work as Tidus.
P.S. I hope Tidus will listen to my story/joke in #telltidusatale

I love the Tidus laugh, it's funny how many people didn't understand the scene, it's in no way your fault or bad acting, it all came down to what you had to work with and What they wanted you to do. I like Tidus he's one of my favorite FF characters. But I don't think I would have liked him as much if it wasn't JAT voicing him, one of my top favorite VAs

I played FFX for the first time some months ago and I fell in love with the character of Tidus. I think he's so relatable, I feel a connection to him precisely because he's whiny. He's struggling to find his identity from the very beginning, where he's constantly compared to his father, but he grows up so much! He becomes the hero he always wanted to be, he accepts his fate and is willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of the ones he loves. If that's not strenght I don't what else is. He didn't begin like this, but this is why I love Tidus: we watch his journey, his story, and we grow up with him. I never played a game that had me so emotionally involved, and that's also thanks to the amazing voices! I particularly loved the laugh scene because of the meaning, and when I learned that people don't understand it and make fun of it, I was surprised, it's pretty clear to me that the laugh is as it should be.
Omg I wrote sooo much! I'm sorry but FFX makes me very emotional. Keep up the good work!

Firstly, Final Fantasy X blew my mind as a young kid and got me into the final fantasy series, and just storytelling in general. And I loved Tidus's character from the moment he said, "Listen to my story..." He is wonderfully flawed and human character and You, James Arnold Taylor, did a wonderful job bringing his character to life. So thank you for the memories, truely.
Secondly, I almost feel bad that JAT is, almost 20 years later, still trying to explain the laughing scene. At this point the people that get it, get it. And the people that dont get it, dont get it. Ya know? I hope JAT realizes that actual fans of the game love that scene:)

James, I've been watching this channel for a bit over a year now. I just want to thank you for always making me feel inspired. I may not have any aspirations to become a VA particularly, but I do hope to animate or be a video editor one day and you're always there to help me overcome my shortcomings. I just figured it's finally time I at least give a thanks.
P.S. The Tidus laugh has given me so much joy at many points and in many conversations throughout my lifetime. Sure, it's always in the context of how ridiculous it is, but that's what makes it so memorable and enjoyable to call back to.

I feel like too many critics, and certain gamers, are unwilling to give any kind of English dub a chance regardless of its quality just because, as you rightly pointed out, the acting beats are different. That's why I love Final Fantasy and JRPGs overall, because they're different, they're uncanny, and not always true to life. But when they do produce very real characters, the stories are even more memorable!
As for the laugh itself, the context is what sells it. But I'm just really tired of people calling all dubs bad just because of one scene, as if English speaking players are seeing 'tarnished' performances or stories as a result of the dubbed voices.
Thank you for the story, JAT, it's always interesting to listen! :)

Omg I never comment on UA-cam but I felt inclined. I can't believe the laugh scene got so much attention!! Unbelievable. I am seriously facepalming at how ignorant people can be for not realizing it was meant to sound like that!! The context and even the animation is right there in front of people geez.
I remember being 12 years old back in 2002 playing FFX and I loved that scene because you could feel how overwhelmed Tidus was. I never once thought "Why is he laughing like that?" because I obviously understood. The voice acting from the entire cast is what pulled me into the game. You guys did an amazing job and brought the characters to life.

You listened to the directors/writers and gave them the laugh that they asked for. For me, Tidus's laugh makes me smile. Was so worried back when I first tried FFX that the voiced lines would ruin the game, but when I heard Tidus scream as he fell from the Blitzball arena at the start I felt really relieved. JAT I just want to say thank you so so so so much for making my first Final Fantasy game the most memorable, emotional and life changing experience. Prior to FFX I have never touched a FF game ever. The first time I touched FFX was back in 2001 when I worked my ass off to buy my first PS2 and fortunately the PS2 i got came with a bundle. 2 games inside, Tekken 4 and FFX and OMG when I played FFX, I never cried so hard in my life. Your energy and emotion penetrated through the game, I instantly found a connection towards the character you voice. You, Hedy and Matt to this day I remember it so clearly like it was yesterday that I was back as a 11 yr old kid sitting in my room and playing through it. Just omg I didn't want the story and all the voice cast to end. So i was so happy that you came back for X-2 and then FFX/X-2 remake. It gives me goosebumps everything I rewind the story and the voice cast voices back in my head. You have a very unique voice that should be a national treasure. So from the last 19 yrs of my life. I just want to thank you again for doing such an amazing job. I cried when u did this intentional laugh, i knew instantly what it mean. your voice for Tidus is surely missed. I could only dream if square-enix can make FFX-3 and you can come back and do Tidus voice one more time. So thanks again!

I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan across all of the games. While I probably wouldn't call Tidus my "favorite" FF character, I was never put off by his personality, I thought he was a very effective protagonist. And indeed, it was the reason I wound up finding your work on the internet all those years ago.
And you know, there's a scene of Tidus' "whining" that might be my favorite performance of yours in the whole game. It's when Tidus learns the truth of the summoner pilgrimage, and he realizes all the things he'd been saying to Yuna their whole journey suddenly sound so naive and stupid, and he's completely overwhelmed. I think you nailed that scene. And I'm always impressed with your ability to slip back into it so easily for Dissidia and such (his showdown with Jecht in Dissidia was actually another standout performance).
Anyway, thanks a lot! I love hearing you talk about your Final Fantasy experiences and I always pass them along to the FF site I frequent :)

Let's just face it - there are a lot of gamers have never even talked to a girl, much less fallen in love. It's just a matter of emotional immaturity. They can't really relate to these kind of awkward moments that two people who like each other go through when they are just getting to know each other. It was Yuna's way to try and cheer up Tidus who was feeling homesick. Tidus thought it was a stupid idea but humored her anyway because he liked her. But once he started laughing it was more like crying because he began to realize that he might not ever get to go home again. Then Yuna joined in with him to relieve the embarrassment and let him know that its okay to feel scared (because she was also scared of what was to come). Then they laugh together for real because they realize how silly they are acting. Plus even after they do the fake laugh Wakka has a line about thinking they'd gone crazy.

I remember thinking that Tidus just wanted to make Yuna happy - kind of like a child whose mother asks them to smile and laugh when they get upset.
It added extra effect if you just lost the Blitzball game prior to the scene. Wakka retiring on a losing game with the Aurochs that you promised a win for would be guttering.
Not to mention everyone getting on his case about the toxin and his chats with Auron about Jecht being the key source of despair for Spira AND the reason why he is stuck in this foreign place... possibly never to return to Zanarkand - his home, his mom and his lifestyle.
That's not something you can genuinely laugh about, especially at 17 years old!

People don't understand the concept, it's just as you mentioned actors are given the sense of direction for certain projects which the director or creator of that project tells them to go. Not just in video games, or animation but in tv shows and movies too if that's the way the talent team wants you to go you must follow the way they want it done that's Entertainment and I would like to personally thank you for providing us that for so many years keep up the great work voice actors nor movie actors should be or tv actors shouldn't be criticize for their work.

I first played FF10 back when it came out in 2001-2002? I was only a young teenager at the time. For me, back then, games where only starting to have voice overs for their characters.
Before ten, I played a handful of Final Fantasy games and fairly enjoyed them.
However, Tidus was and still is to me the first Final Fantasy character that I feel out of all of them displays the most amount of human quality.
He gives out all ranges of emotions and characteristics of a person. In general he’s a very happy cheerful guy for the most part. But you can tell he dose suffer from some levels of depression, mainly his resentment towards his father. And again, it’s these mix traits that we feel in life is what makes a person human. The fact that he has a tendency to always see things from a positive outcome and is not afraid to challenge the norms and plus give the benefit of the doubt. He’s not perfect and that what I enjoy about his character so much.
James let me just say, I give you great respect how much life you brought into this character. I’ve enjoyed Final Fantasy 10 for many years. It’s one of the few games I often go back to when I find some free time and play again.
You’re obviously doing well for yourself and please keep preaching the positive. It was Characters like Tidus who I looked up to in life. Always strive to see the good that life can offer you.
Again, I thank you again for your contribution towards Ff10.
    Thank you!

I love Tidus, the character is awesome. The laugh didn't bother me at all, it was obvious to me what they were going for and I was 14 when I played it for the first time. It's without a doubt one of the best games I've ever played (multiple times) and I credit that to the story and great characters.

Great and funny retelling of the story.
I've personally never had a problem with it as I understood it for what it was. In fact I think it's one of those things that truly makes the game classic. It's not necessarily a pioneer, but the things it did visually and with its acting and cinematics still was a major milestone for videogames.
Nowadays probably no game would have a scene like that because people will either like it, not get it, and others simply won't like it. But back then there were no "rules" on how to do things and they simply did with FFX what they felt was right and it turned out great, I think. It has heart.
I do like the laugh a lot. It serves its purpose in the game, but it becomes hilarious outside of it. I think people are too preoccupied with their complaints about the scene and how (intentionally) uncomfortable it is. Some people think it's corny, and maybe it is. And they don't have to like that, but I think there is a difference between that and insinuating it's badly-done.
At the end of the day art resonates differently with everyone.

It's utterly *mindblowing* that people are legitimately stupid enough to not understand the laugh scene. Honestly James, those of us with even an ounce of brain get that it's on purpose, it's a goofy laugh meant to make Yuna and Tidus laugh for real afterwards (which they do), love how you did it. It's honestly one of the best scenes in all of video games I think, not just because of the obvious emotion in the cutscene but the underlying emotions with Yuna that turns out to be a twist later.

Tidus is one of my favorite main characters in all of Final Fantasy if I'm totally honest. Sure, he starts out whiny but you're right, and I've always realized this myself, but let's think about this logically. A) He's in Zanarkand, playing Blitzball, being all "Star of the Abes!" and celebrity, suddenly Sin attacks, and he's pulled supposedly 1000 years into the future. He's lost, alone, has no "celebrity status" AND, he's young. OF COUUUURSE he'd be whiny. To call a character whiny as a trait though is... kind of asinine at least in Tidus's case. He grows up, he matures through out the course of the game, especially as he starts to accept the fact that he may never get back to his Zanarkand. He makes great friends with Wakka, Yuna, Lulu, Rikku, Khimari, and Auron, hell he even reconciles comes to terms with his old man as he learns of his father's fate. Honestly I think Tidus definitely comes into his own and grows into quite a compelling and interesting character. I'd easily take him over Hero McBadass any day. You know the type. The Hero who's completely impervious and is basically a Boy Scout with no weaknesses, and peerless power who you know will save the day without even trying so to speak.
Yes Tidus is whiny at the start, but You would be too in his situation! At least he had the strength to get up and do something about it! :P You're prolly sitting there depressed and "woe is me." right? :P (Not you James, the Naysayers I'm talkin to there)
Anyway, Tidus in my opinion is definitely one of the more interesting main characters in FF history, even despite his whiny start, and "teh laugh!" and looking like Meg Ryan lol, but no I really do love Tidus :)

Interestingly enough, the Japanese Tidus' laugh scene.. He sounds kind of angry. Like he's trying to force the idea of it being stupid, but enjoying himself ultimately in the process. Yuna's reaction caters to it as well, kind of nervously asking him to stop, so as not to offend, or continue to make fun of himself with everyone watching to sternly. I feel the performance you gave paints a great picture in the scene. He's just heard some grave news, and he's not really sure what to make of things. Of course he's going to be frustrated and disheartened, but all the same he's a fun dude who's willing to give it his all.

It's obviously supposed to play out like that, how people miss the point is beyond me. They must have seen that clip alone without knowing anything about the game or the scene's context.
I think they just want to hate on something they don't understand. Your portrayal of Tidus and Hedy's of Yuna was amazing. Don't pay attention to a couple of haters :)

I always thought it was absolutely crazy for people to complain about Tidus or even hate him because he's whiny and such. Like you briefly mentioned yourself - he had a crappy father, no sign of a mother (for presumably a long time), and then to top it all off - he got taken from his homeland and flung god-knows where, alone. He's only 17 for goodness sake!
And that's not to mention all of the horrible things he learns and experiences as the game progresses...

Stuff getting lost in translation... the trueness of that statement is hilarious. I still remember an answer that Travis Willingham gave to "what's the most ridiculous line you've ever had to say" with regards to translated stuff, and the answer was "Feel my wind."
Is there a favourite straight translation line that you've had a giggle at because of its silliness in our English context?

This is what I've always thought. People always complain about this scene, and I never understood why. I ended up watching the scene in Japanese, thinking maybe you did it wrong, but he did exactly the same thing in that version. But I never see people complain about that version. People just don't know what they're talking about. Sure, the scene IS a bit cringy, but it's supposed to be. For what it's worth, I always thought you did a great job.

  • @Goujeton199
    @Goujeton199 5 років тому

Yeah I don't get why people don't get that the laugh is completely intentional. It's even more absurd if people still don't get it 17 years later (huh same age as Tidus) where the internet is even more available, and by watching the American and the original Japanese version, the context is exactly the same where Yuna makes Tidus smile, then LOL. Tidus gets carried away, the camera points to the other party members looking on as if they see Tidus gone insane, and Wakka literally asked if Tidus and Yuna had gone crazy.
My favorite part of the scene
Yuna: "You really shouldn't laugh anymore."
Tidus: *IDGAF* "AH HA HA HA HA HA HA"
I'm personally hoping to see Tidus in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate so his fake laugh can be one of his taunts. I'm sure a good chunk of people who say they hate the laugh without understanding the context (or even trying to understand) will pull a 180 and have Tidus in their good graces. Though they'll find a different way to complain if it happens. "Another Swordfighter?" "Another BLONDE Swordfighter?"

I don't have much to say about the laugh, but I do have one opinion on FFX: I always preferred Tidus and Rikku together. There, I said it. I've been holding on to that for years. Now comes all the comments of how/why I'm wrong.
