you cannot say you chose to be a slave if you didn’t rebel, things in life are not just black and white. They were also not in the position we are in today. They couldn’t read they had no access to information, they were literally ONLY taught to be slaves, and never knew of a life outside of it. Those that did run away were taught that there was a life other than slavery. You cannot choose when you are unaware that there are options to choose from.
Also if you go by the black and white logic of everything is a choice, then you 100% also believe that a child being r**** is a choice because they didn’t say no.

@@123reletive123 Life indeed, is not binary. However, basic instinct is not compatible with slavery. This phrase that Kanye said, probably for this exact reason, is provoking. It isn't that anyone chose to be a slave, it's that once they found themselves in that position, they either chose to make the most of it, or reject it. A baby or child may not be capable of voicing their issue, but basic science has proven that even the youngest baby has an inherent sense of what is fair and what is not, what they like and do not. That example is not even remotely similar and completely ill thought out.
Someone had to be the first to rebel. Someone had to be the first to teach themselves how to read against the wishes of their oppressor. Those that chose were not guaranteed/recorded to be in a more favorable position either. Same for many other historical figures of note. Not even to mention what they had to face once they made that choice, which is almost always guaranteed to be worse than if they had not. Which is why those that DID not, chose note to. Someone always has to choose differently to make change. Period. It isn't a slight against those who didn't choose, but to discount or equivalate the two is just preposterous. That those who chose did, is what makes them exceptional and worth note. They literally set aside/transcended their human instincts of self preservation and fear of death/repercussions to bring long term change to an untenable existential state. That is what drives true/long lasting progress that actually affects future generations, not just temporary or incremental change that may or may not benefit direct lineage.

Math is thinking only one way, Van didn't get to finish his thought, but when teaching someone to read or knowing how to read could lead to your death, than that act (of learning or reading) is revolutionary. Van is right, it's a spectrum, no different than people of today. Some people are going to accept the situation and do nothing, some are gonna go from 0-100 and go all out, but most are in the middle, doing small, but significant things that may not seem revolutionary on its face, but in context of the time and the consequences, were extremely revolutionary. The fact that Math doesn't know if he is a descendant of slavery is enough for him to be quiet dare I say, get the vitriol some are rightfully giving him.

In the same breath you said he was a choice and was fine w this. But mad and giving their opinion on slaves… the ones who literally have no where to go, no language, no weapons. Harriett Tubman didn’t go for freedom at 5, 10. She had to wait and see when she could, there were hundreds of slaves before her. Like stop dogging our ancestors

Math showed his true colors as a non-American slave descendent. This is exactly why there is a divide between Americans that are descendants of slaves and those of immigrant backgrounds. There is deep judgment and he finally showed his hand. Can even pointed out how other communities do not crap of their own tribulations like Black people do and was unmoved. Even proud to stand on this perspective. I was proud of Math’s ability to build a platform like this, but now I know the white supremacy structure will buy him out and reward him based on this episode alone. Worst part is some of the interviews have been awesome, but I can’t see him as my brother anymore and now see him as a Black American culture vulture of the worst kind.
