I find your videos to be informative and well-researched, and they often spark more interest of the subject causing me to follow the links you provide and going down yet another UA-cam rabbit hole... The good kind, naturally. What I found amazing in this video is something else altogether. People start your videos and don't finish them? They watch part of it, and just... Nah, imma watch something else? That, I don't get. You do have a way of expressing concepts that allows me to better understand. Your explanations of physics, chemistry, etc make these subjects more reachable for me, and interesting enough to look for more. I look forward to many more videos!
i think most of your regular viewers, myself included, probably always watch the whole video (ok, i sometimes turn it off when you get to your commercial at the end). thanks for the great, well researched videos!
Joe: Showing watchtime position for comments is a brilliant idea! (I do not think it should be actually implemented, but the idea is really good. Coming back to a video to comment without seeing the video would distort the data is a problem for example.)

Keep challenging views. Education and facts should be taken without fear of vengeance. People are sometimes idiots, I’m a people sometime. Hi Joe, I was an Army Intel analyst from 99'-03'. My area of interest was central Africa before 9/11. We referred to the DROC as "The Dee Rock". Post 9/11 was the Middle East. I worked with EOD, the Army bomb squad most of that time. (The bomb squad in 'The Hurt Locker'). I thought this was a great primer for that area. You get the high points, and can find out more if you want. Great Job!!! I am pretty sure I saw at least 90 hours of lecture brief and read thousands of pages on the DROC. Great summary of the stuff you need to know.
Hey Joe, love your authenticity and even handed approach to the issues. Prismatic cells differ from cylindrical ones mainly in their shape. Prismatics generally use a hexagonal prism on the individual cell level, this increases their packing efficiency and gives a moderate increase in cell density. This benefit is offset by the increased thermal load, which requires more cooling at a given power level (which is made more difficult by the elimination of the inter cell spaces typical of prismatic pack assemblies).
12:17 "There's also a lot of people who comment before the watch the whole thing" This is the biggest problem with comments on YT, imho. Not only that, you have idiots who comment before watching ANY of the video. They load it up, press pause, then comment their BS trash talk and downvote your video. I agree, that YT should not allow this, or have a timestamp or that they can't downvote a video without watching more than 25% of the video or something to that effect. Or all the above perhaps. 14:18 "Once you use cobalt for that purpose [oil refining], it's spent" How is an element, a metal, used up? Typically metals are very recyclable. Seems unusual.
I suspect it's more a matter of how difficult and/or costly it would be to recover. According to the Cobalt Institute, the catalyst CoMoX is "3-5% tricobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4), 14% molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) and 83-85% alumina (Al2O3)". Separating this back into its constituent elements is likely not easy. That said, it does look like there has been some research to find economical ways to recover the cobalt from "spent" CoMoX catalyst: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1757-899X/334/1/012049 www.researchgate.net/publication/266278450_Cobalt_Recovery_from_Waste_Catalysts_Petroleum_Refining_Industry_from_Gujarat (just to cite a couple I found on a quick search).
orange-micro-fiber it is either extremely dilute (the opposite of a rich ore deposit) or it is in a chemical form that makes it uneconomic to re-extract
It makes sense. If you're using a metal and you're chemically modifying it, such as with a battery, the chemical structure changes. This happens over the life of any metal that is involved in a reaction. Eventually, the metal is either converted, or modified in a way that would require expensive recycling processes, which, depending on costs, would probably take more to recycle than it would to just dig new shit out of the ground. Same issue we have with stuff like plastics.
@@deathscreton The cobalt itself is still cobalt, the element. It's the 93% of other stuff in the waste that makes it uneconomical to recover. Plastics are complex compounds, and can degrade into forms that lose desirable properties, becoming unusable. The carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, etc. in the plastic is still elemental, but is bound up in a witches brew of chemical compounds that cannot be easily separated.
I appreciate that you actually care about trying to get your facts right and also try to not spin/exaggerate things. I don't always agree with you or your perception of things, but your "Cobalt Video" was absolutely fantastic, Joe. Incredibly informative, digestible, objective & it also did the general, UA-cam frequenting public, an incredible service, by shining a much needed light on an important situation that the vast majority of people are completely unaware of, due to an almost absolute absence of coverage, by basically all of the most accessible, mainstream media outlets.

I always look forward to your videos and the cobalt video in particular. No one should ever derive an opinion from one source, not even one as well researched and presented as yours. It is a great synopsis and starting point. Love your stuff. Keep it up.
Hey Joe! Great video! I really enjoyed your insights to your video making process! Just a few notes: Sulfur makes its own stink! hehe (Relating to your comment about not wanting to make a big stink out of the desulfurization process.)Also, if you do research right, when you're "done," you realize just how little you know about a given topic! Most things are complex and complicated, and have nuances and even different interpretations of the same data, making it even more complex! It is actually a good sign that you go down rabbit holes and find so many things to report on!! It's also time consuming so it's understandable that it doesn't all get included in a video! It can also be a lot of fun to explore and makes the process of discovery all the more rewarding!! Great job and keep 'em coming!
Keep it up Joe! I have learned so much from watching your videos, and it has helped broaden my horizon on many topics. I especially like the fact how emotional you are in regards to your themes. It shows that your topics are important to you. And you have an innate skill to present complex material in a simple and easily understandable manner that even I , a german, understands ;-)
The cobalt video is definitely one of the most informative videos I've seen you do. I thought it was excellently done. I'm sure that kind of video is a ton of work, but it paid off in spades on that one. PS: I almost always watch videos to the end, unless an outside event interrupts me. I watched the cobalt video all the way through.
Hey Joe. You have to accept that no matter how much thought and care goes into preparing com, you will never avoid someone not understanding and missinterpreting. And, let's not forget, there are those who come into this in bad faith. So, you know, don't flog yourself too harf over it. I love your videos, most of them anyway, I find them entertaining and most of all mind opening and instructive. Keep up the good work mon ami.
Great job Joe, appreciate your colourful look on things and the way you present them. Yes, no one person is perfect at what that do but you my friend do a damn good job. I always look forward to viewing you work. Sad to know you'll be dropping one vid a week 'but' am happy to know you'll be extending the one you do. As always, thank you for the work you do. 👍
I, for one, enjoy the long form explanations, primarily because these subjects have a LOT of information that really should be included to correctly and fully frame the conversation. Especially when you're discussing material physics and the entire supply line involved. A conversation about EV's needs to include what it means to 1) build the EV, 2) produce the electricity to charge the EV, 3) consider the day when that EV goes to the scrap heap, and 4) all the other things that I'm not about to list in their entirety because I personally can't possibly think of them all. So, I appreciate how much effort you put into being thorough, and worry less about being succinct. People who want to throw down snarks, criticism, etc prior to actually listening to an entire presentation, I agree, should have some metric for measuring just how deeply and completely they, at a minimum, HEARD all you had to say on the subject. Often I'd like to see that myself on the comments I read. For example, I had no idea you employed a group of production people for getting these videos out. Here I was, wallowing in my ignorance of the process, believing you just put down your remote for 30 minutes a week and started recording. Ok, not quite that but I did believe you were a one-man-band to this point. Wow, Joe's an industry!
Anyone who can think clearly knows that you don’t try to purposely anger people. You always do your research and present a well rounded video. That’s why I watch every one of your videos. I really believe a lot of these people are just angry with their lot in life and take out on the ‘UA-camr’ because it’s safe. Whether they realize it or not, they are unhappy people. Reasonable people KNOW how great you and your channel are!

You should be proud of the video. I thought the blood diamond style parallel was a clever hook to get people to read.
Something weird though, I don't see it listed on your video list?
BTW, I am one of those weird people who watches your videos start to finish... Go Figure?
Thank you for taking a swing at this one, please keep covering topics like this. The intersection of social issues like controversy in supply chains vs what benefits comes out of tech is fascinatingly tricky but deserves a look in to specifics / nuisances.
Your secret weapon for watch time is the timing of your background music, when you bring it in and out. Subtle detail but well done
You have one of the better, more informative channels on here. You attract a wide array of spectators and with that you'll always get trolls.
Don't go changing, keep doing what you do. It's appreciated.
Thank you for your work.
Growl grunt stomp feet now I'm mad, that damn Joe Scott not making everyone happy, what makes him think he can have an opinion of his own 😅😅 love ya keep doing what you do
I find your videos to be informative and well-researched, and they often spark more interest of the subject causing me to follow the links you provide and going down yet another UA-cam rabbit hole...
I look forward to many more videos!
hurting someone's feelings is bound to happen when you pressent them with truth..
Please continue with your style as it is. Your videos are both informative and entertaining, which is a truly valuable combination!
yea yesterday's vid was nice some deep dive vids are cool! but don't take away Random Thursdays, please!!!
There's an old saying you should think about when faced with opposition or criticism: "The dogs bark, but the wagons keep rolling."
The outro should be "This was TMI" in the same style as the intro
Agreed. Perhaps... "Thanks for watching. I'm Joe and this was TMI."
Tbh his outro here was simple and gold
i think most of your regular viewers, myself included, probably always watch the whole video (ok, i sometimes turn it off when you get to your commercial at the end). thanks for the great, well researched videos!
Joe: Showing watchtime position for comments is a brilliant idea! (I do not think it should be actually implemented, but the idea is really good. Coming back to a video to comment without seeing the video would distort the data is a problem for example.)
I'd agree it may have some problems, but YT keeps a history of what you've watched, so the best solution might be a time stamp and a little box that goes green when you've seen the video, no matter when
I just noticed it does not work at all: It would leak information about what somebody has seen so somebody else, which is catastrophic at least.
It's a brilliant idea, so we definitely shouldn't do it. Implementing brilliant ideas is for stupid people.

Thank you for your service in informing the public.
12:27, You could ask people to leave the time stamp. I tend to if it's relevant.
But the people he's referring to aren't those who leave productive comments, like yours. He's talking about the assholes. They aren't going to follow a channel courtesy, it would have to be forced onto them by the UA-cam gods.
I have a backlog of unwatched YT subscriptions, but watched your cobalt video today, and this TMI was thumbnailed at the top of the what to watch next. So for once, Yay UA-cam! got it right. And really, so far none of your videos have pissed me off. The digs you make are digs I make, and I tend to see what is wrong with the trying to do right or better globally. Keep doing what you do. It's good.
I power my electrical horseless carriage with an array of Leyden jars.

sometimes research takes you down a rabbit hole and when going through those layers, you’re bound to dig up stuff to annoy or piss people off, if you have a wide enough audience.
Keep challenging views. Education and facts should be taken without fear of vengeance.
People are sometimes idiots, I’m a people sometime.
You seem to do some serious research and spend a lot of time crafting a story to inform and entertain us.
I think this is a valiant endeavour and sometimes pissing a few people off is a badge of honour.
dude iv said this before and il say it again. i respect your integrity, balance and honesty. i like the depth of your research and the openness you have about any holes you feel you have in it . l love the deep dives for this reason and thank you for your work.
Love you too. I know it is weird, but that is what I needed.
Hey Joe. It is evident that in these sensitive subjects you really have to walk a tightrope. I appreciate you forging ahead and providing the content you do. It is very informative, with a balanced approach, and a witty style. Keep doing what your doing, and maybe, you can impact societal awareness and change mindsets. Rock on!!
It was a great video yesterday Joe, just like today’s addendum. Just like every other video, you can’t please everybody. You’d be walking on water if you could. Love you too.....😉
Yes, rule of thumb is that if Jesus/Muhammad couldn't keep everyone happy then neither can you!
Your honesty is a major reason I watch your channels
How about, "I'm Joe Scott and this has been TMI"
I'm Jason Henley and I approve this sign off.
"Love you" is better still :'D
@@LostPhysx ikr, I was like "wait what?"
I'd watch your 30min vids or even longer. Short ones are great but deeper dives and more information is always great.

I am so offended that Joe is blaming cobalt for the death of Bruce Wayne's parents.

I'll probably get downvoted for making such a comment, but oh well.
So you're saying UA-cam should be suppressing people from speaking their opinions based on An arbitrary goal you set forth?
@@jlogg8738 Their opinion on a video is invalid if they don't watch the video.
Maybe not an arbitrary number, maybe not allow a comment to effect the algo unless the user has watched a portion of the video, not just skipped through it.
Every one has a voice. Just not everyone's voice should be heard. Especially when they have no knowledge of a topic and they try to speak as if they do.
I have seen friends videos that were just posted, and they were downvoted, without watching the video. That should be allowed, imho.

That said, it does look like there has been some research to find economical ways to recover the cobalt from "spent" CoMoX catalyst: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1757-899X/334/1/012049

(just to cite a couple I found on a quick search).
orange-micro-fiber it is either extremely dilute (the opposite of a rich ore deposit) or it is in a chemical form that makes it uneconomic to re-extract
@@jamesowens7176 I just commented about this paper - you beat me to it.
There is too much FUD getting tossed around and it is nice to hear from people who just want to truly educate themselves and share what they learn with others. I always watch to the end :)
You did the best job any human being possibly could do given the topic and the range of issues surrounding such topics. You can't please everyone's outrage or soothe many people's egos when they feel that you are not addressing their concerns about issue A or outrage B. You do the best with what you have and you can bet that no matter what you do, these segments of your viewership will almost never be pleased. I feel that you did the best with what information you had available and if things like the cobalt issue can teach you anything, take those lessons and apply them going forward. Starting this comment at 15:00ish. I watch all of your videos, as I do most videos I start. I find it difficult to understand why people choose to not listen to all of the context of a video before choosing to becoming outraged.

i love it when channels i watch mention eachother. ive been subd to @ColdFusionTV for forever.
You put way too much stock in the naysayers and what they have to say against you. They are few and far between and you're doing a great job dude. Stay true to yourself it's what got you here

1- loved the blood battery video- well balanced and super k formative. Even better was the links to the evidence. Been looking for the evidence on cobalt in refining fuel

I really enjoy your videos, pretty much all of them. The cobalt video one however, I absolutely loved! Really informative. Really well rounded and generally just amazing. I really like you style and I look forward to you releasing videos. If you were to make them longer and do a deep dive that is definitely something I would support. Keep it up Joe!

I always look forward to your videos and the cobalt video in particular. No one should ever derive an opinion from one source, not even one as well researched and presented as yours. It is a great synopsis and starting point. I would like to recommend looking up Microfabrica and the technology they develop for any videos you may have coming up about rapid-prototyping/3D printing/microscale additive manufacturing or devices measured in single digit microns with features fractions the wavelength of light.
I'd love to see something like a monthly deep dive from you. I'd watch an hour or more with no problem.
Keep it up Joe! I have learned so much from watching your videos, and it has helped broaden my horizon on many topics. I especially like the fact how emotional you are in regards to your themes. Hey Joe.
You have to accept that no matter how much thought and care goes into preparing com, you will never avoid someone not understanding and missinterpreting.
And, let's not forget, there are those who come into this in bad faith.

Joe, I always have and always will watch every moment of your videos. thanks for producing such great content :)
Joe, really appreciate your retrospection. Carry on the good work!
I have enjoyed watching some of your vids, some interesting subjects, none more so than the the whole Fusion thing and also the Cobalt video. I was glued, and I don't think you should be afraid of making videos covering more complex subject matter in the future.
IMO you are the best UA-camr man keep doing what you are doing! People are just always going to have their opinions especially those who are negative.
