  • In this video I'll be doing some preliminary prototyping of a magnetic "MagSafe" charging expansion card, and a hidden RF Mouse dongle Card for the Framework Laptop. Although these are primarily for finalizing PCB dimensions I will see if I can get them to actually function.

To my absolute surprise, HP does! Or did. For older laptops, repair manuals exist, which include fairly detailed schmeatics, maybe not full boardview level, but still pretty detailed. Thing you can find while using HP Part Surfer are pretty amazing. But, when Haswell came, with the last socketable intel mobile CPU being Core i7-4700HQ HP never bothered again.
That didn't stop them from whitelisting WiFi and WWAN adapters.

One thing that interests me would be a dual-USB expansion card. It obviously would not have full bandwidth in both slots, but it would be great for devices that don't need the full 10Gbps transfer speed like a USB numpad/mouse. The card definitely has room for at least two type-C slots, even if type-a doesn't work out.

I'm honestly super excited to see what expansion cards third parties come out within a few months' time with proper R&D. For one, there's nothing preventing someone from making a multifunction card - just put a USB hub controller chip on the PCB, and we could possibly have a "Logitech dongle with USB passthrough" card. Now that's something I'd pay good money for.

I would definitely love to see you do a video on connecting your eGPU to the Framework Laptop! I have mine on order and currently scheduled for October release and that’s one of the first things I want to try setting it up to as soon as I get it (my Razer Core X with 5700 XT). I actually just SUBBED just so I can keep an eye out for that video in the future!

Found your channel through this video. Pretty exciting to see what people do for the Framework laptop as I'd love one eventually. Love the magsafe idea, and RF module for mouse solves my biggest pet peeve about laptops : ya still need a dongle for the mouse if you somehow hate BT

Hey! Great work. It would be good to have an expansion module with a pushable knob/wheel for editing and modelling. Thinking further, maybe using both slots to get a bigger/firmer like control surface and adding an extra slot to extend the chain.

Your channel will take off if you can focus it towards your engineering and prototyping ability. "Maker" style channels exist, but if you can incorporate that effectively with the techtuber world you will have fulfilled a very nice niche. Best of luck!

"Magsafe" is a great idea. Since it's patented and the only way we can get it is with modifying a current laptop. And framework makes that easy

Instead of individual bits(or use this as an extension) you should try different kits that include a bunch of ports that are useful for different things like a charging station, one with like 2 or 3 video ouputs/USB 3 for gaming, or one for video ingestion so high speed thunderbolt ports and different SD card readers.
Wanna go from workstation to couch? Unhook everything in your laptop in one go, pop in a different dongle and go

Great video. Ethernet port and also it would be interesting to see serial db9 port that goes to a Cisco Router. Yes modern day cables use a regular USB-A but it would be interesting to see it work.
