      I watched it in IMAX 3D, the 1st 3D film I had ever seen, it looked absolutely amazing and I couldn't get enough of it, so I subsequently watched it again on numerous occasions. I also saw the extended edition in IMAX 3D as well. Since then I've seen a lot more films in 3D when I can. Next up is Dune in 3D, soon after I will watch it on an IMAX screen, because it has to be viewed on the biggest screen possible.

    This film has become a joke for some people online, and unfortunately people watching it at home now are missing like 70% of the experience because this was shot entirely in 3D (rather than being converted to 3D in post-production as happens now), and it was intended to be seen in IMAX. Seen that way it was practically a religious experience because one of the things Cameron did was instead of making things fly at your face like most 3D films, he used the 3D to create depth, and it was an amazing effect. I remember I kept seeing dust floating around the theater and I'd wave my hand to move it away from me, only to realize it was in the film. I don't enjoy it nearly as much watching it at home.

      It wasn’t just the breathtaking visual beauty and 3D, either. The story was powerful. You can call it derivative or archetypal. What it was NOT was just another version of the various films its detractors try to compare it to. It grew more powerful with every viewing. And it has even more resonance today as we have learned that even here on Earth the trees do talk to each other and that we need to learn the lessons of connection before we too kill our mother.

      @frikkinpenguin 3 роки тому +65

      @@MegiMoon It’s because of the DNA, yes. If you take some time and look closely, you’ll notice more. The Na‘vi have no eyebrows, but Jake does, which, like the 5 fingers, is a human thing. Also his body is not as delicate as theirs, his shoulders and hips are wider and his jaw is more square. Dr. Augustines Avatar, or its face specifically, is much more on the human side, look at the nose and the eyes, they aren’t as upturned and cat-like. Norm‘s Avatar also looks more human. I don’t know if Cameron did that for the audiences, so when they looked at the Avatars, they quickly could tell, who was who or if it was deliberately, to portray that genes can work in many ways, showcasing Mendel‘s principles. Either way, it’s those many minor details which have a huge impact and that made easily rank this movie as my all-time favorite since 2009.

      I always wondered why they don't have 4 eyes and 6 limbs, since that seems to be the biological norm on the planet otherwise. I know that it is easier for us to connect with them because they look more like us, but it would have been cool to have a 6 limbs, 4 eyes standard for the entire planet, just like 4 limbs and 2 eyes are the norm on earth. (I know this is extremely simplified. I hope you understand what I mean). :)

    • @frikkinpenguin
      @frikkinpenguin 3 роки тому +12

      @@sister1976 I understand what you mean and I also wondered about that. What I realized as I thought about it, if you look closer, there are other beings than the Na‘vi, who „fall out of the norm“. The Ikran, for example. They have four limbs and four eyes, contrary to the Leonopteryx, which, besides his four wings also has two legs. Does that imply, that even though they look fairly similar and close related, they aren’t? Like hippos and rhinos, for example. Their size, their bodies, they look somewhat similar and still the hippo’s closest living relatives are whales.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but after watching it through a few times, the death of Jake's brother by a mugger sort of set up the viewpoint of where humanity was in that universe and the desperation and somewhat pettiness that they show, and that helped in leading up to Jake's confession for me because he was trying to tell them that he had rediscovered a new sense of purpose and meaning. I really enjoyed watching your guys' assessment of the movie, this definitely is a constantly retold type of story and it can be hard to attach to certain characters. Great reaction!

    I saw this in IMAX 3D in 2009. It's honestly the single biggest motivator I had to study VFX and am now a fulltime cg artist. 11 years later, it still holds its value and looks better than even some lower budget blockbusters coming out this year. The vision that Cameron had for this film was decades in the making and the level of world-building is on-par with LOTR and Harry Potter. I honestly can't sing its praises enough. For everyone calling this a Pocahontas knock-off, get a life. The only similarity it has to that is the natives vs invaders setting, mining motivation, and an invader falling in love with a native. Everything else is completely different and unique. I am a firm believer in the fact that your plot doesn't have to be some revolutionary new subversion of pop culture to be considered good. A well-trodden concept, executed well, is more often better than a new idea, done poorly. I for one, can't wait for Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. We've already been promised cutting-edge new film technology for the sequel (2), just like the original did for real-time motion-capture and virtual cameras. I love this movie 🍿 It’s visually beautiful but also a necessary storyline to repeat, because clearly first world countries still haven’t learned this lesson. What is depicted in the film is exactly what has happened and is still happening in real life: literally murdering the indigenous population to get rich/take resources or land. So when people roll their eyes or dismiss the storyline because it’s “been done” I’m like… “why? Too real for ya?!” Sheesh.
    Also the coding of the Na’vi as Black and Native American by using actors of color and Native and African movements for the tribal rituals was entirely intentional and people don’t pay enough attention to that. The hiring of Native American and African American actors, the movement choreographer (Lula Washington), and costuming (Mayes Rubeo for the Na’vi) is important!
    Anyway thanks for reacting!

As jake mentioned while speaking at the trees of Eywa night before the battle. Humans had started exploring other planets for resources, when the company established mining on Pandora for Unobtanium. The metal was used on earth for energy (like gasoline or coal), which was really valuable due to the current situation on earth. That's the reason it was highly expensive & valuable for them for which they wanted to remove the navi's from their village in order to mine it.

    There's even a book wrote by Maria Wilhelm and Dirk Mathison that's like confidential reports about Pandora and, gods, there's so many details. Talks about how Earth is nowadays (in this AU), about the discovery of Pandora, Pandora's fauna and flora, the human's technology, the Na'vi culture... There's even a Na'vi dictionary.
    I don't know if you can find this book in english (you see, I'm a brazilian so I read this book in portuguese), but it's really nice if you're a curious person like me that like this kind of details. Not to mention the MANY photos of places, things and beings.

    When you rewatch any movie, you find the context clues they gave. Like how the big red dragon guy was used by Natiris ancestor and brought all of the clans together at a time of great sorrow. And when Sully was getting his dragon, the lines, "How will I know if it chooses me?", Then Natiri says, "It will try to kill you". And the big red dragon tried to kill him. You notice during the chase, he was trying to chomp at him, not Natiri. The Eywa knew it was going to end badly and chose Jake, as if it was saying, "He's the one".

The excitement of people in the cinema with this beautiful world full of details left me and the people in the room in awe. In the scene of the attack on the home tree, me and the entire movie theater cried with revolt. In the war scene when Pandora's animals revolted against humans, the whole cinema vibrated and screamed with joy and happiness! And I remember the revolt everyone felt when that guy with the scar on his face didn't die the plane crash and almost killed Jake. I remember everyone screaming for joy when the bastard finally died! Something to consider and one of the reasons that you mention that this story seems older and has been told before is because it actually is older, it was written almost 20 years before it was made because Cameron felt the technology wasn't there yet in the early 1990's to make this movie. He even based the Na'vi on a screenplay he wrote back in the 70's. Not to say this story is the first of its kind even 20 years ago but I feel it is good context to know when it was written.

    I really don't care that so many people laugh at this movie as "the cliche one with weird blue people". I still think it's one of the most visually, technically, and creatively STUNNING movies in history.
    And so what if many of the plotlines are cliche? Cliches are nearly always cliches for a _reason._ They are tried and true storylines, often because they ring true to the heart of the story of humanity itself! It doesn't matter if your plot points are cliche; what matters is how you treat them, and the vision behind the movie as a whole. James Cameron waited DECADES to even START on this movie, because he knew the kind of technology it would take to pull off his dream.
    And holy FUCK did it work.

    Most spectacular movie I've ever seen from a complete all around perspective. I got to see it in 3d IMAX and it was revolutionary. Closest thing I could compare it to was seeing Terminator 2 in theaters in the early 90s, which also revolutionized cgi. Other contenders would be Jurassic Park, Independence Day, and The Matrix (all of which I also saw in theaters)..... but this..... this movie was something else. James Cameron is more than a director, he's a visionary, and I don't doubt that he would remaster and re-release this movie in a 4d setting, virtual reality setting, or complete interactive hologram setting, if those technologies ever are adequately available for it in his lifetime. He really doesn't ever do anything half-way. There are reasons he has multiple movies in the top 10 money making movies all time. Incidentally, I think this was meant to be more of a series or anthology set of movies and the sequel is supposed to come out in 2022 around Christmas. If so, can't wait to see it!
    Edit: with all due respect, this movie is not overrated at all. When is there a hero's journey that deals with a transference of a handicapped person that gets the promise of their physical body back, but chooses to stay in a dream state with only the hope of living because they gained not only the use of all rheir limbs and freedom and meaning of life back (not to mention the happy accident that they matched exact to point of their DNA to project the person and consciousness into a real and physical being that needs those attributes to just stay alive in a foreign environment?.... ummm.... I'll wait for examples.... their aren't any, or at least to the extent this movie portrayed them). Then, the sway of native peoples on invading marauders (yes that story had been told lots of times in great movies..... Apocalyptico, Last of The Mohicans, Dances With Wolves, lots of Spaghetti westerns, etc....) in my opinion, this take with all the supernatural and physical components in place is a unique perspective of that story. And in fairness, this movie has had 12 years of people attempting to disect it and criticize everything that is wrong with it, with only small acknowledgements of what is right, which is the creation and entire believable set up of a storyline that is told from a completely made up world. The fact that it still holds up with cgi and evokes emotion is the only testament people need. Look, I understand that reactors try to be objective and I'm good with that, but, while degrading and lessening of what the purpose of movies is entirely is ridiculous and really is pretentious like a person that studies a year of psychology or meteorology in school and then feel they are experts on the topic. They may be a student of the art/science, which is fine, but let the public also review any films/short films/animated films/peer reviewed published scholarly articles you have published,, etc... people to give their thoughts on). I was born in 1973 and grew up watching War of the Worls, Them, Godzilla, Psycho, Star Wars, Close Encounters, Jaws, The Creature From The ack Lagoon, and on and on.... I am no film student or any of that or close to it, but I recognize and appreciate genius, innovation, storytelling, and etc.... when I see it, and this movie has it all in spades. No disrespect intended, but the fact that all these newer reactors look at classics and hold them heads and tails above newer movies is sometimes just stupid, it just is (and I liked this video, btw). Let me tell you this.... if the special effects in movies like E.T. and Jaws were even close as they were in this movie, it would have freaked me out and probably scarred me for life. It is just crazy and interesting from an older person to watch reactors look at old movies and praise the effects when many of us older folks would have loved if the special effects used in movies now were accessible and implemented in movies when we were younger, and it is a main reason many of us older people like newer movies based on older stories and concepts, such as the new shark movies, Transformers, monster movies and many more. But, to each their own..... a good movie is a good movie, period! And this movie checks every box.

    Oh, guys, you have no idea! In IMAX 3D, OMG!, the movie was literally emersive. At one point, ashes and cinders are falling all around, and I tried to bat one out of the way so I could see, forgetting it wasn't real. I also saw the movie later, in digital 3D, in a regular theater, and the 3D was still amazing, but it started at the screen and went in. There was no action right in your face. That alone, the native 3D IMAX imaging was STUNNING! Breathtaking. Mesmerizing. And the neat-o factor of the beautiful colors and vast digital scenery, with the digital acting avatars mirroring the physical alien Avatars in the movie's story, far and away made up for the B+ sci-fi plot.

    I want to comment on Ninetailedbrush's criticism of the movie. He says, and I quote, "If you're going to take a common theme [ie: hero's journey], I would like to see something unique about it or something done extremely well, because I've seen this story done many times." That is what he said about this movie, THIS MOVIE!!! He pretty much hit the nail on the head for why this movie is so amazing, then doesn't see why it's so amazing. Yes, this story is unique, that's not the issue here. Many movies have simple plots or themes that we've seen before; that doesn't keep us from making movies or going to see them. It's how they are made and constructed in new and innovative ways that keeps us interested. James Cameron has developed and has honed in on a new way to animate movies so well, that you cannot even tell that they are animated. This movie is almost entirely computer animated, yet you CANNOT TELL!! When was the last time you saw an animated movie that you can say that about? That's because Cameron took his time to tell this story and made sure it was made....(wait for it).....EXTREMELY WELL!!! Ninetailedbrush, dude, the way this movie was approached, from the themes of conservation, waste, expansion, and the destruction of natural resources for capital gain, given the sci-fi edge and realism, it's absolutely genius. That's Cameron taking a commonly used theme to tell his story from a different perspective that's entirely......(wait for it).....unique!!! Guys, I don't know if this is an age thing or you have just seen too many movies. But PLEASE wake up, this movie is absolutely amazing! I can agree the military aspect was simplified and overly destructive; that's for movie sake. It makes killing the villains more satisfactory as they defeated later in the film. However, as much as a movie fan as I am, and to all movie fans out there, you have to appreciate the depth, the scope, the layers, the time, and the energy that it must have taken to put this movie together. It's one of the things I appreciate about James Cameron, he does not give it to studio pressure and he will not accept anything less that what is expected. For this reason, he puts out movies that are without comparison. So I would hope that you two look at this movie with a different perspective and simply understand, this movie is absolutely unique and is done so well, that you can't even tell it was animated. Sorry for the rant. Keep doing what you do- love it!!

      Just because it is unique and well animated does not make it a good film and I think that was our point. The story, writing in particular was not great and if not for the amazing special effects, no one would be talking about this movie. A good movie is a proper and beautiful balance of all the elements involved. While it is undeniable that elements of this movie are mind blowing and incredible, the more important elements (the souls of the movie) are unoriginal and just lack the depth and nuance we think they should have had

    This is the first IMAX movie i ever watched in China. It really remind me the traditional culture, the attachment with natrual environments.

    I saw this in IMAX & I genuine love it more than the Avenger’s Movies that supposedly “beat” it. This was the FIRST FILM in it’s franchise not the 20th so it bothers me when people shit on this constantly.

    29:12 Remember when Neytiri explained that an Ikran chooses its rider by trying to kill him/her, this is a foreshadowing that later Jake will tame the Toruk because it tried to kill him.
