It was an awesome decade to see. Not to be outdone by the 2010s, but certainly underrated massively!
One of 2 times in my life I ever saw my Dad cry 1st was when my grandmother passed away the other was when the Angels won the World Series and I was blessed to be in Section 305 of Game 6 & 7 with him just turned 3 Years old at the time Dad got free season tickets due to him working at Southern California Edison for 30 years up to that point included the playoffs during those days Man was that an Experience of a lifetime I don't remember a lot of things from that age Game 6 & 7 are burned into my head I remember when Darin Erstad Caught that final out I have Never seen that stadium go that insane before or since brings back so many good memories I've still got my thunder sticks floating around somewhere
I met Scott Spezio a couple of years after the Angels won the World Series. He was at a cards show in Anaheim and I was talking to him about this game and this at bat which along with Kirk Gibsons home run in the 1988 World Series was the single most dramatic moment I have ever witnessed in sports. Like the Dodgers in that series the odds were against the Angels coming back especially since they were down 5-0. When I asked Spezio about that moment that night he said that going into that 8th inning when the Angels rallied they never held their heads and always believed that they were going back and somehow at least tie the game even though were down 5-0. He said when they headed back to the dugout for that record breaking rally of an inning to start their at bat he told me that they believed that because they had done it all year that year and also did it against the 2 previous teams they had played in the playoffs up to that point in the 2 previo-us series that particular post season against the Yankees and Twins. Going into that World Series and into that game they believed they would not only rally and come back with that relentless offensive attack of theirs that season but also would win. I remember vividly watching this game and thinking to myself that would somehow come back and pull it off. They did. One of the great games ever. The following night the Angels celebrated their 1st World title. This current Dodgers World Series team that won this year reminds of me of that Angels team. They are both World Champions will forever be champions to.
Nice recollection. But it was the 7th inning in which Spezio hit his 3-run HR that put the Angels back into the game, at 5-3. In the bottom of then 8th, it was Erstad who hit a line-drive HR to make it 5-4. And of course Glaus won the game for the Angel's with his 2-run double later in the 8th. The Greatest game in Angels history. And the greatest comeback in World Series history for a team facing elimination!
I remember this day like yesterday. Growing up in Anaheim, just after my pop Warner practice ended. My dad and I walked into a packed pizza parlor and Scott Speez is at bat, down five. Place was going nuts by the end of it. A close second Angels moment for me was Kennedy’s hat trick against the twins. We’ll be back one day
I call this game "The Mistake." When Dusty Baker came out to get Russ Ortiz and gave him the ball thinking that it was going to be the GAME BALL when the Giants won the game and thus the World Series. M-I-S-T-A-K-E! Some Angels players took offense to this arrogant presumption and made the Giants pay dearly and ripped the Series right out from under them!
I wonder if pulling Ortiz too soon played a part in Baker's decision to leave Mark Prior in the game far too long one year later. Like maybe he was second guessing this decision and overcompensated.
2002 World Series is so underrated. If the Yankees had won the World Series the way the Angels did, it would be considered one of the all time greatest World Series. But since it’s a California World Series, it doesn’t get much love.
Considering what your avatar symbolizes, you don’t think they’d consider a Cowboys Super Bowl win to be a pretty big deal compared to a Chargers win? The Yankees are the most popular sports team, possibly even in the entire world. Of course a Yankees World Series would be popular, just like their losses are constantly referenced. Believe me, I constantly see games on from the ‘04 playoffs, ugh!
IMO the greatest game in Angels history! (ALDS Game 3 against NYY a few weeks earlier maybe the 2nd greatest.) This Game 6 was the greatest comeback in World Series history for a team facing elimination.
Man I feel old. I can't believe this was 22 years ago. So many elderly people sitting there at the gane that have passed on. I was 10 years old, as a young dodger fan who's never seen the dodgers win a world series, I was supporting the Angels against the State Rivals we both hated, the San Francisco Giants who were the Juggernaut because they had Barry Bonds. When Scott Hit that First Home Run all of Southern California Erupted, and up until Freddie Freeman's World Series Walk Off Grand Slam in Game 1 this was the greatest world series comeback and still is for Game 6. Great Memories and My First SoCal World Series Win that made me an Diehard Angels fan (when the Dodgers don't make it of course) lol. I remember all those guys they're now retired.
The decision to start Bonds in left field instead of putting him in the DH spot in this game was an exercise in stupidity for Dusty Baker. Bonds was a comedy of errors the entire series! 😆
Never noticed til now and closer cleaning up of the slo motion replay in Final Cut for fun 10:56 that ball actually does skim the very inside of his left inner thigh. It’s breaking so much so late with his left leg slightly forward, you can see his upper thigh have a sudden decrease that isn’t consistent with his pants losing slack. He’s already stretching as the ball passes so any new creases after would be strange. But that’s exactly where the ball passes just out of view of the camera. Not enough to throw off the trajectory of the ball but I suspect slow it down just enough to somehow be caught otherwise that’s likely a wild pitch Hence why I assume he was so cognizant to get out of the way with Kent on 2nd and would advance bonds to a possible 2 RBI scoring position.
I remember watching Willie Mays struggle in CF when the Mets played the A's in the 73 World Series... Bonds' fielding in the late innings here reminded me of that!

It was so heartbreaking for me as a Giants fan to see my team lose this series when it looked like they were going to win. All is well though as they made up for this loss and in spades just eight years later. 🏆🏆🏆!!
As an Angel fan I have always wondered why the giants didn’t walk Claus in the bottom of the 8th with an open bag. Sure hindsight is 20/20 maybe but if you walk glaus fulmar strikes out and then you have a potential double play set up. Glaus and Speiz were the hottest hitters play %s. Oh wait dusty baker was manager never mind
Barry Bonds, who was 6 outs away from a World Series title and MVP, has a miserable Bottom of the 8th defensively that gave Anaheim all the leverage they needed to take over and win that game.
I was 12 and was SOOO mad the Giants didnt win this series but looking back at it now, the Angels were always going to win. They came back against an ELITE SF bullpen that post season and deserved it.
2:24:20 Imagine Eckstein gets the hit here. Darin's HR then takes the lead. I know a lot of people gonna say we don't know that Erstad still hits that; but I promise you that Ersty was thirsty.
He gets a lot of flak from a loooottttt of people but I'm genuinely gonna miss Joe Buck's voice for the baseball post season; it was a part of my childhood
It was as if the baseball gods punished Dusty Baker for giving Russ Ortiz the ball, as he came in to remove him from the game. Managers never do that. I've literally never seen that done before or after.
2:42:20 Why not walk Glaus here? I know it's not great putting on the insurance run, but first base open and Glaus was hitting .390 for the series. Obviously Baker liked the rightie v rightie matchup, but I still think walking Glaus woulda been the smart move. And I don't get why McCarver says they would play the infield in with 1 out but not with no outs.
IDC what people say..Dusty Baker lost this World Series by pulling Russ in 7th with 5-0 lead. He always put runners on and got out of it. He walked the bases loaded then struck out the side 5 times that year. Our bullpen was tired..I knew it..he should have known it. Russ had only gone 6 innings previous start and won. You leave him in there..every arm that came in from bullpen was down 5 mph on their fastballs. Things you need to know as a manager. Bochy did..Kapler does..Maybe Dusty finally figured it out after ruining Cubs pitchers Wood and Prior by doing the exact opposite trying to compensate. Good manager, not great. Gotta handle staffs.
Why was Orlando Palmeiro pinch-hitting for Bengie Molina in the 7th? I could understand if there were runners on base; Molina was a double-play waiting to happen. But once Spiezio hit that home run, the bases were empty.
i have been a angel fan for a long time since i was little and waited a long time for the angels to win it all and finally they did it everything finally went there way that year i did get alittle worried when the giants were ahead 5 to 0 but the angels came back like that had that all year and won that was a good game and a magical one for the angels and i am happy i could watch that game here on the youtube its been 20 years but it atill takes me back to that day
This is exactly what Baker does to the Astros pitching he over uses them he did the same to the Giant's a big reason why the Giant's lost the World series he needs to realize you can't constantly use the same pitcher
One of the many things I could never stand about Joe Buck doing baseball games is that he is always a freakin wet blanket. It's the 9th inning, two outs, nobody on and the home team is about to win. Instead of just keeping his pie hole shut and letting play out, he's starts rambling on about how it wouldn't take much for the Giants to get right back into it. Let the fans of the team that's ahead enjoy their moment for Pete's sake. It's tense enough as it is without the unneeded commentary.
Buck and McCarver's man crushes on Bonds and Baker was neaseating. Bonds was a beast but had the personality of an injured snake. Baker is one of those guys who gets tons of credit as a manager but his teams were always loaded with talent.
Giants “no doubles” defense in the 8th was atrocious…gave up a pop single (should have been an out) then a single and error so runner gets to 2nd and then Glaus double over Bonds…
My guess is because Glaus had a reputation as a free-swinging, feast-or-famine type of hitter and they might have thought Nenn could strike him out. While Glaus did hit 30 home runs in 2002, he hit just .250 and struck out 144 times
I remember my brother and I used to call Russ Ortiz "the cow" when we played mvp baseball 04 we were so excired to pitch as the cow when playing with the braves in exhibition mode
@Lighthouse in the Storm The Angels went up against Barry when he could hit anybody it just goes to show you that 1 player can't do it all in baseball also the Angels were a wildcard team it was just MAGIC IN 2002 to bad its been 20 years

Why the hell didn’t they intentionally walk Glaus in the bottom of the 8th to load the bases with 0 outs?! Take your chances with Fullmer!
So they walk Bonds because they're scared what he might do if he actually gets to swing? That's funny as hell
Rip cos villa fox
The Angels didn't beat the Giants they beat the Steroid Giant Barry Bonds and then beat the Giants 💥 💥 💥 💥 💥
@Lighthouse in the Storm The Angels went up against Barry when he could hit anybody it just goes to show you that 1 player can't do it all in baseball also the Angels were a wildcard team it was just MAGIC IN 2002 to bad its been 20 years
@@justinmccartt2763 The Giants were up 3-2 in the Series and 5-0 in Game 6 and Bonds was not alone whenever all that took place. The Angels just wanted it more.
The Angels has 1/3rd the payroll of the Giants! Proving money cant buy you a ring!
barry bonds choke, choke ,, choke....!!!11
glad they quit with these kids in the dugout
First play besides baker taking the ball from russ ortiz that I remember who was traded the next year to the braves
This umpire had a fair strike zone. Much better than the umpire in game 5 of the 2017 World Series with a super wide zone against Dodger hitters.
Worse yet, that wasn't the only unfair disadvantage the Dodgers had to deal with. That game was a farce.
2:09:01 Why doesn't this pitcher throw a breaking ball at this batter? You'll get hit as expected.
Joe buck is called this game so soft and with no emphasis on anything Angels
