    Sometimes I wonder wether there are also negative consequences of reducing the amount of daylight to the extend that some people do, combined with our lifestyle that is mainly indoors. Inside you are exposed to relative much more UVA radiation than UVB, also relative more visible short wave light. UVA causes ROS and degrades Calcitriol, which is import in upregulating genes responsible for cell cycle arrest, DNA repair etc. Solar radiation is important for cell circadian oscillation rythms. Research shows that office workers don't get enough light, artifical light is not effective in maintaining this normal rythm. And melatonin is of course important because of its defense response, antioxidant properties. So is there not a balance needed? Is eliminating all radiation really what is needed, or is being outside for 15 min during the morning better for example? Of course excess UV radiation is damaging, I'm absolutely not debating that, everyone needs to apply sunscreen every single day, but seeing a small amount of actual daylight, is that maybe not necessary for normal cell functioning. There are indications that the relative high contribution of UVA vs UVB we have because of our indoor lifestyle may also contribute to the higher incidence of CCM we see the last decades. I don't have the answer, I think research doesn't even have the answer yet, more and more research emerges around these subjects the last years, but maybe the trend towards eleminating light as much as possible that some skincare fanatics have, perhaps that is not as good as some may think, and going outside for a while every day is essential.

      I've heard doctors say it's better to take Vitamin D supplements rather than being exposed to the sun

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  5 років тому +9

      outdoors you are exposed to an excess of UVA in relation to UVB. No one is telling people to stay in the dark 24-7. In fact we actually spend more time outdoors now than we did in past generations. We also live longer now then we did, which no one ever mentions, and as a result make it to the age where the adverse consequences of excess UV exposure are evident in the form of increasing incidences of skin cancers

    • @peterkloostermann
      @peterkloostermann 5 років тому +2

      @@DrDrayzday it has been on the news and in the newspapers a couple of times, people with office jobs are inside too much and don't get enough light, disturbing circadian rhytms, the "expert" recommendation is to spent more time outdoors. Yes I was surprised by the recommendation as well, I didn't come up with it. Maybe it's also due to where I live, it's dark travelling to and from work, and it's quite common to stay indoors during the day.

      Peter Kloosterman why/how is it more common to get more UVA versus UVB when you’re indoors? Please explain

    • @heredianna2496
      @heredianna2496 5 років тому

      @@smackytall Hi I've also heard many Doctors say otherwise as only 10 min outside daily is what we need for enough VITD . Not all them agree on that. As for me as long as you don't have higher risk of skin cancer, I'd rather go out for a walk 10 min in the sun before or after the sun pick hours rather than taking vit D tablets.

    Sunscreen that irritates my eyes has always been my issue with wearing sunscreen. Most of my life, I wouldn’t wear sunscreen at all because it made my eyes burn and water. Since I started watching your channel, I’m trying to be good but I now have a drawer full of sunscreens that are a misery. The only ones I found, that I like, that don’t burn my eyes are the Ulta MD Sport and the Australian Gold tinted mineral sunscreen. If you have the same issue, try those... it will save you money.

    • @jt8142
      @jt8142 5 років тому +4

      Rae Peronneau: Avobenzone and Oxybenzone are the main sunscreen filters that irritate my eyes. EltaMD UV Sport and Australian Gold Botanical are combo and mineral sunscreens, respectively, and don’t contain those filters ; therefore, I’m not surprised they work well for you around the eyes. I also tolerate them myself. So glad you found some that work for you. 👏

      I would say to apply sunscreen on your cheeks and across the bridge of your nose and no higher. Then, cover your eyes with sunglasses and forehead with a hat until you can find ones that don’t burn your eyes! At least they’re not going to waste! Arms and hands too!

      To share [just for reference for others looking to try it]. . . I also use this sunscreen, but find I do use it more from Sep. to May when it is not hot/humid, otherwise it can be a bit challenging when used near my eyes. It is such a great compilation of coverage and ingredients, as Dr. Dray shared.

    I’ve been a longtime subscriber and I’ve been curious about your opinion on skin purging and the usage of salicylic acid. I’ve never had blackheads but I currently have quite a handful of inflammatory acnes (pustules, whitehead, little bumps) As a new user of the Cerave SA renewing cleanser, after 3 days I have noticed that my skin seems to have broken out where I usually breaks out. I fear that it isn’t a purge and that I am going to worsen my skin as I wait for my skin to calm down after 6-8 weeks. I’d really appreciate your input ! Love your videos!

    QUESTION: I prefer mineral sunscreens as I feel they last on my skin longer and in theory should lose its efficacy more slowly than pure chemical ones do. And I understand it's harder for ZnO and TiO2 to handle/dissolve in solution of lower pH. Since we're gonna be wearing sunscreen all day, it better be within the desired pH range (4.5-6.0), right? So I'm wondering if there are any mineral or hybrid sunscreens on the market (my preference has always been Japanese and European ones) formulated with whatever magical technology that allows the ingredients to stay stable/effective under pH 4.5-6.0 please? If not, please still address this concern! Much appreciated!

    • @karyon1007
      @karyon1007 5 років тому +1

      "Non-comedogenic" isn't a very helpful term since what causes breakouts is different from person to person. If you've got oily skin, it's worth a shot to try a lightweight moisturizer instead of a cream. Something like the Neutrogena Hydro-Boost Gel Cream (www.ulta.com/hydro-boost-gel-cream?productId=xlsImpprod12041837&sku=2284292) might be helpful. Just make sure you're getting the fragrance free version. Dr. Dray used to talk about it quite a bit, but I don't remember her mentioning it recently.

For example I just finished, "The Rich Man's Guide to the Riviera" by David Dodge. It is his memoir of his years there with his wife and daughter. Happy Saturday! I bought this product at the beginning of the summer but I don't have the anti-shine. I didn't have any eye pain but I didn't use it because the cast is so high that with makeup it's horrible! This Halloween decor must be quite special at night if it's lit up! This book seems mysterious to me and is a historical fiction at the same time. Currently, I am finishing a trilogy of Stieg Larsson "Millenium". Full of twists and turns, investigative journalism, endearing and complex characters, the star Lisbeth is very introverted...I'll probably read it again later. I think Tybee misses her mommy!

    I love the vichy capital ideal soleil anti brillance sunscreen. I got the 50 spf uvb +uva one when I went to Paris. Then I bought it online (care to beauty I think), because they don't sell it in the USA. It is the very only one my super oily skin can take. Everything else, my sweaty oily face won't take, and my makeup won't last with any other sunscreen.

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  5 років тому

      SAMMAY it is good for an American chemical sunscreen, but questionable how it would hold up to European / Canadian sunscreens

  • @sharischmidt4712
    @sharischmidt4712 5 років тому +1

    I have pretty much given up on chemical sunscreen for my face, my eyes just can't take anymore! So it's zinc only for me and by now you probably guessed it's the Coppertone Pure and Simple. Love it!
    I live in a university town, the one school is very involved in A I , self-driving cars, robots care takers and grocery carts that scan your purchases and you pay with your credit or debit card right on the handle of the cart. Unfortunately it's not a good time to be a cashier.
    Happy weekend 🎃🍁

      yeah we have a self driving car that delivers groceries in our neighborhood, but at least the still pay an employee to ride around in the car and hand the groceries to people. i hope that part does not get phased out

    What do you think about the new Glossier Future Dew? Sounds lovely but I am not sure about these ingredients. List below from their website.
    Blend of 4 Nourishing Oils: Jojoba, Grape Seed, Evening Primrose, and Rosehip Oils are suspended in a water-in-oil emulsion, creating a cushiony, silky formula that hydrates thirsty skin while it nourishes.
    Evodia Rutaecarpa Extract: Fruit extract known to visibly increase brightness.
    Sugarcane Squalane: 100% plant-based ingredient that helps locks in moisture.
    Light-Reflecting Minerals: Gives all skin tones an immediate glow that lasts all day.

    My friend uses the tinted mineral version of the Vichy sunscreen you reviewed daily, and does not find that it stings her eyes. (also the tint is lighter than the La Roche Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Sunscreen).
    I enjoyed hearing you talk about The Trees...I'm going to look for that one... my boyfriend goes on about how artificial intelligence will be the end of us (he's a mathematician, eye roll Hah!)

    I went to the dermatologist yesterday and had a mole removed from my upper chest. It was benign looking, but it quadrupled in size over 1 yr and I wanted it gone before it got any bigger. Peace of mind 😉

      Kyndra Brooks: Their products are overpriced and contain no preservatives, which is risky and not recommended for your skin. As well, some of them contain rose water, which is still fragrance. Definite pass for me.
