Yes! Reminds me of the old-school (and in rare cases current) Jazz scene. I didn't even know this existed, and I'm now in love. Well done again Rap Critic, you've exposed me to another thing I've loved.

if you like digable planets, you should check out shabazz palaces, it's one of the guys from digable planets with another guy. absolutely crazy beats, half experimental electronic and half jazz/soul, with crazy lyricism.

I can't believe I forgot about this song but then again, old school hip
hop stations barely play it. BUT I LOVE when a song hybrids jazz and hip
    hop together.
This is like the hip hop version of Me and Mrs. Jones.

  • @Zachito15
    @Zachito15 7 років тому +4

Thieves in the Night - Black Star. Mos Def arguably has one of the greatest verses in hip hop in that song

  • @noreehix5714

If you think about it really Bebop music with scatting or spoken word is the father of hip hop so it makes sense that they fit so well.

    • @mydadshowering2978

Q-Tip says that on the first track of Excursions:
      "You could find the abstract,
      Listening to Hip-hop
      my pops used to say
      It reminded him of Bebop"

Another reference to jazz could be the title "Rebirth of Slick," referencing the Miles Davis album Birth of the Cool. This album signified the jazz's transition from being danceable party music to intellectual art music.

Describing Q-TIp & Phife Dawg as "two normal guys." Huh. I could maybe see Phife (tho when I think of Phife I think of the goofy, funky diabetic) but Tip?

I'm a huge Tribe fan, and to me they've always felt like normal guys. Especially Tip. How about Left My Wallet in El Segundo? Q-Tip is just rapping about losing his wallet, which seems pretty relatable if you ask me.

I of course like and respect the Critic's opinions but I think he completely underestimates the massive influence Tribe had and still has on hip-hop. OutKast has pretty said that Tribe was one of their biggest influences. Hell, Big Boi used to rhyme and move EXACTLY like Phife as a teen. Arrested Development, Nas, MF Doom, Arsonists, The Pharcyde, Kanye West, Del Tha Funkee Homosapian, The Fugees, and Digable Planets will all freely admit that groups like Tribe, De La and the J-Beez (Jungle Brothers) were massive influences on them.
