    Incredible. Though I am not going to be knitting anything with button bands anytime soon, I want to make a "Keep Me Swatch" solely for the purpose of learning this technique. I continue to be amazed by what you teach us but equally by your skill as a teacher. So clearly explained, yet no wasted time. Thank you and keep up the great work!

    THX!!! for this video. I've lost track of the number of videos I watched trying to master this buttonhole, watching some of them many times. Yours is the one that did the trick for me. The video showed so clearly the steps, particularly making and then working the yarnovers.

      Thank you, Elyse! I am so glad I could help you figure out how this buttonhole works. Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment. I appreciate it a lot.

    Wow...unbelievable! I have never heard of this. I have had to hand stitch button bands ⅔ closed as the buttonholes have stretched and the cardigan looks so sloppy. This might be a game changer. Thank you.

    Hi! This is exactly what I needed to work a button band as part of a cable edging on a sweater coat. The pattern called for a cabled edge, but did not button. Loved the coat but wanted buttons! I'm going to make this work, and even more, I'm hoping to make the cable high-definition as well. So far I've made a swatch and it works. Thank you so much for this!

      Genius! However I'm curious about the yarn overs. I can't figure out what their purpose is, could you please explain?

    Thank you for this video! How would i adapt this method knitting in the round? Im working on the waistband of trousers and would like to add these vertical buttonholes to insert a ribbon as waist tie

      Hi Sylvia. The process is the same for working back and forth and in the round. To use this method to make slits for a drawstring, start by making a narrow piece between the slots. The left side of this piece (with the right side of the work facing you) will be the "right side" of the second slit / buttonhole, and the right side of the narrow piece will be the "right side" of the first slit / buttonhole when looked at from the wrong side of the fabric. Once both slits are as long as you need them to be, make yarn overs at the top of each slit (you will do it at the end of the last two short rows), and move to making the wide piece (most of the waistband) following the same logic to finish both slits at the same time. I hope this explanation makes sense. Good luck :-)

    I'd love to use this method! I have to make two vertical buttonholes at the end of a mistake rib cowl. So how do I do your method if I'm not working just one? Holes would be about 2" from either side with about 4" between them.

      You can use this method to make as many buttonholes as you want, but you need to stay focused. The process will be a lot like nestling dolls - you will make one side of the first buttonhole, then you will make the first side of the second buttonhole as you finish off the first buttonhole. Finally, you will finish the second side of the second buttonhole. Good luck :-)

    Is it possible to make a horizontal buttonhole in 1x1 ribbing on a cardigan! I really would prefer not yo have to make vertical buttonholes. Thanks!

    • @10rowsaday
      @10rowsaday  7 місяців тому

      Of course. To make a horizontal buttonhole, bind off one, two or more stitches depending on the size of the button. Then use cable or knitted cast on to cast on the same number of stitches and continue to work in pattern. Happy knitting!

      @10rowsaday My problem is that I'm knitting a horizontal rib. Having picked up the stitches along the front, I now need to make my buttonholes as I go. I can see how to make vertical buttonholes, as you say with cable cast on, but is there a way to make horizontal buttonholes in a horizontal rib?
