    It is always nice to see someone sparring with twohanded weapons and having to rely on footwork. Keep up the good work👍

    Finally someone who knows how to use a dane axe. A really terrifying weapon for the man on the other side, had a lot of "occasions" to fight against it. One might think that after breaking the distance its easy but the grip on that shaft can be shortened in no time, allowing to cut short. Honestly I think the hardest part of fighting the dane axe is to gather the courage to charge him and effectively kill before he can sidestep and counter.
    Nice one!

      @@siginadzieja2859 thank you! We might have to do more dance axe videos as they are very popular! We are just holding off for now until we upgrade to heavy clamshell gloves because these things hit like a truck 😅

      @@SpearEnjoyer Yea I wore a metal plated glove with felt underneath and leather skin on top, got hit with a danaxe right in the hand and the power itself broke my middle finger without damaging the glove :D

    Once you had the spear he was always ready to attack the spear hand. That last shield only charge is the answer

      I should have protected my hand better but the shield was getting very heavy by this point in the session 😅

    It's interesting to see how sparring rules effect the fighting style. I've fought slot in the SCA which doesn't allow lower leg hits making the shield much more effective against a long weapon. Definitely nice aggressive sparring and control of measure.

      Thanks! Having armour covering half the body really changes things up for us, although we can strike at the face its such a small target and its pretty risky to go for. The lower arms and legs are still very vulnerable and axe seems to be very effective at targeting these areas with sweeping cuts while staying our of measure

      Agreed, conversely in buhurt, where you don't reset after a hit closing with sword and board is also more effective as you can potentially keep a favourable range

    would you describe your Dane Axe fighting style as aggressive? your the first person on YT ive found that actually fights this well in my opinion (i could be wrong so forgive me if im not right) AGGRESSIVELY its so nice to see someone while constantly being on the offensive still use such beautiful technique with their axe its straightforward and brutal but that doesn't mean it doesnt lack technique and beauty to it you sir are someone i use ALOT as reference for my own Fencing i love your guys channel

      Thank you. We aim to help as much as we can (Guy with the Fencing mask) When I use the Axe I'm not as aggressive as the other guy as he has a better understanding of the mechanics behind using it. We have found that it is very offensive piece of equipment and using it defensively isn't really suited to its purpose. Wearing armour does make it harder to land those aggressive blows thow as you have to try to manager your opponent into more favourable positions to land a successful blow.

      @@TheWelshRaider THANK you so much! i was originally told "oh yeah nah its a back of the line weapon why would you ever use it aggressively"? this person i no longer talk to but regardless their statement didnt stop me using my Axe aggressively it just left me confused as to how this type of beautiful weapon is "defensive" lol even though it may be a two handed weapon to me i love it i thrive with it in close encounters feints your swings their so fast snappy and let alone consider what a sharpened steel blade would have done to flesh! to me the Dane Axe fighters were like the pioneers of the Pollaxe aggressive big men who while not always moving around were Predators on the fighting fields at least thats how ive always envisioned it

    Nice, why don't you be more aggressive with shield, and push it on arms/weapons?

    May I ask you lenght and weight of the axe?

    • @SpearEnjoyer
      @SpearEnjoyer  Рік тому +3

      from what I remember the heads are 200 or so grams, a little on the lighter side but the wooden hafts have been made a little thicker to add some extra weight to make up for this somewhat. They stand around 5ft tall, about shoulder height which is shown in the Bayeux tapestry for our reference. although probably not as heavy as its steel counterpart, we do what we can to get as close to real sparring without pulling our hits. I'll be introducing a steel version to try out for our more experienced members but there will definitely be injuries haha!

      @@SpearEnjoyer In your hands that axe is incredibly agile (also thanks to your excellent technique). I have a steel replica of buhurt's poleaxe, 165cm x 3.1kg, which for obvious reasons I don't use with sparring partners. Despite the weight I find it quite manoeuvrable, but I'm very far from your speed. I wanted to understand if, in addition to the technical difference (my technical skills are tremendously inferior to yours) and to the weapon difference (a poleaxe is not a Dane axe and also the way of use them is quite different), the difference in speed that I see with those who practice Hema can also be attributed to the differences in weight and balance of the replicas.
