Nolzur's sculpts look quite nice when painted with this kind of skill.
Recently started the hobby after a long break (35 years), this tutorial was just what I was looking for. A well produced video. Thank you.
Steven Read thanks!
Pretty brave painting eyes after the face. I find it easier to do eyes first, it doesn't matter if I mess up a bit before I get them right. Different strokes for different folks.Nice video. He came out great for the effort you put in. I think you've convinced me to buy a pair of humanoids from this line. Seem like a nice diversion amidst other projects.
NikoTeaJay cool - very good point about eyes first or not. It actually never occurred to me to do eyes first!
Wow, another one so soon; definitely helped make my night. For the basic techniques used, the miniature came out looking great! The highlighting really brought the expression on his face, giving that very determined "fighter" look. Here's hoping these find a good home!
I have tons of prepainted miniatures, now I'm ready to take the dive and get into painting my own
Subbed. This is amazing inspiration for my own painting sessions! I'm no longer scared of the pre-primed Nolzur's miniatures!
Loving these Nolzur's minis. I find your methods give the best results so I would love to see more!
Sweet, glad you like them! I feel like eventually my technique of "now wash this with brown ink" is gonna get a little old lol - it works but it's a total shortcut. I'm actually working on a Monk right now, I wish he was Nolzur's but he's Deep Cuts. Gonna mix up my thumbnail branding a bit! Oh...crap. I just checked and this Fighter is actually Deep Cuts too! Total fail on my part :D
These dnd minis are looking great.
Thank you sir, they are fun to paint!
Love it. Drow monk next please.
Thanks Shadowcat! Can't promise that will be next...partly because I don't have that one :)
Excellent. Some great tips and ideas that can be carried to any number of miniature lines. Love techniques that helps speed the process, such as the inks.
Hal Martin thanks! As I do more of these I guess things might get a bit repetitive. But they are fun and relaxing to paint :)
@@TheMiniJunkie Repetitive in only that you have your own style? Not every vid has to be completely different from each other. I learn every time I watch one of your vids. Sure, you may use a tried and true tested technique but that only shows it's viability. Take the sepia ink from Vallejo for example. You showed that for the first time for me on the leaders cloaks from the SW Legion Scariff motif for the Rebel troopers. I'll never use another technique for old, worn leather again. It's THAT good! You used it here for some parts because it works so well. I'd hate for you to use something else inferior just so you aren't repetitive!
Your channel really deserves to grow big. Great content as usual! Keep it up!
voodoo1988 thank you!
Very nice painting and techniques but one step missing (or wasn't mentioned), washing the edges of the eyeballs.
HI. Very good job on that mini! These Nolzurs minis seem so small to what I was used to 15 yrs ago. Yes, it's been that long. Next time tho, could you slow it down a little? I'd like to see more of the mini during each stage! Thanks for sharing tho! Subbed..
Happy to see the Patreon account up!
Looks great! Can't wait to see more! 🍺💨
When comparing this figure to some of the Nolzurs/Deep Cuts figures I bought a few months ago, there seems to be an inconsistency of quality. Some, like this fighter, look amazing and are very detailed, while the human female rangers, skeletons, and one of the male human wizard figures look pretty flat. However, $2.50 per figure is great, especially for the ones that surpass reaper bones quality. I have some remarkably detailed reaper bones, and some that look plain out bad.
Its shocking what the end result looks like compared to the beginning. When you were adding the inks i was a bit sceptical that this will lead to the end result but it looks great once everything came together
First vid I've seen of yours and I subbed immediately.
zen zin great, welcome!
one question I have to ask, are there any smells permeating from the painting process that would extend beyond one room? I live with someone who has an extremely sensitive nose that can't stand any smells at all
Not really, no - if you stick to acrylic paints. They have no real odor.
do you give them a wash first?
Wow! So you're painting with inks? I didn't know that you could do that but it looks great
Do you use some kind of magnifier? I have an eye disease and have to take alot of time and hold the mini really close to paint, but I enjoy it so much. Thanks!
Jimmy Hindrance I use drugstore reading glasses in various strengths!
@@TheMiniJunkie awesome, thanks for the reply
My problem is that my eyes are not sharp as they used to be (I'm almost 45+). Do you use something to magnify the area of the figure? Do you have any hints on this point?
As usual, a very nice and useful video!
Hi Jan - I'm 46 and totally get where you are coming from. I actually did a video on this topic you could check out: ua-cam.com/video/N52st5xgBo8/v-deo.html (spoiler: I use drugstore reading glasses!).
I'm new to the idea of matte finishes, but i love the concept of using inks to speed paint and then just coating them with the matt finish. Couple questions if you have the time:
1) What material/product did you use/reccommend for doing the matte finish.
2) Do you do the whole model or just parts?
3) Do you have a video or reccommwnd a guide/video that walks through how to do matte finishes?
Loved the video, subbed immediately!
Spenser Covey thanks! I use Vallejo Premium Airbrush Matte Varnish. They also sell a matte varnish that you can brush on, I believe. Testers Dull Coat is another option but I haven't used that for years. I usually spray the whole model and paint metallics last to retain the metal sheen, or I airbrush around the areas I don't want too matte looking.
Is there a place where you list all the paints you used for this? If not, can you list them somewhere. I love the video and would like to paint along with you buy the paints go by so fast it’s hard to write down.
Thanks in advance.
Mark
Mark Sable no, but it would be: Vallejo Game ink brown, black, yellow and sepia, GW seraphim sepia, reikland flesh and nuln oil shades, GW leadbelcher or other gunmetal paint, GW runefang steel, GW stormhost silver, Vallejo game air brown or any other brown, GW mournfang brown, GW mechanicus grey, doom bull brown, administratum and dawn stone grey, any gold (Retributor Armor),Army Painter barbarian flesh, GW Ushabti Bone and Karak Stone, any white. I think that’s it, you can pause the video each time I hold up a paint to double check.
The MiniJunkie thanks! If it’s not too much trouble to do this for future videos it would be incredibly helpful.
where is the best place to buy these inks!?
What size is your brush?
I just went and bought the brown ink but I was wondering, what is the reason you are using Vallejo ink instead of Vallejo model color, which I normally use?
Anders I recently posted a speed painting video where I talk about why I use inks. Check it out!
The MiniJunkie thanks for the quick response, I am actually 9 minutes in as we speak, so I found it quickly afterwards :) great tutorials. I am ordering a bunch of inks
Do you bother giving WizKids miniatures a wash before painting or do you just jump right into painting when it's out of the box?
Nope, it’s pre-primed - no need to wash it.
@@TheMiniJunkie okay cool. Thanks!!
Also, what is the main purpose of glaze medium?
zen zin reduces the opacity of paint if you want to color an area but have the base color show through a bit. Also works well for smoother blends.
@@TheMiniJunkie so it turns a paint into a glaze?
Awesome video just subscribe was wondering if you could do one of Nolzur'S Marvelous Miniatures Dungeons & Dragons Human male druid the one with that has the staff?
I don't think I have that one, but I can give you a 'maybe' for now :D
The MiniJunkie Im trying to get started on painting minis and this is gonna be my first one once i decide what colors to buy im gonna use it for a Druid circle of dreams this is the one Top left images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51BLfgL5RvL._SX425_.jpg
The MiniJunkie And im having a hard time decide on color becuse im bad with colors and because i havent seen a painted one of it to get more reference
Any Perry Brothers Knigits??
Probably not if I'm being totally honest - closest might be the Song of Ice and Fire minis I hope to paint if I get the starter box. Although I realize that's not really even close to the same thing :)
No worries dude. I got you covered! That’s damn-near all I do. Historicals and such. Nice work as always. BTW, I use Filmora, what editing software do you use?
CHARLIE COMPANY WARGAMING I’m using Corel VideoStudio Ultimate. It’s...ok...but I feel like I can’t do anything very interesting with it in terms of effects. Gets the job done I guess.
That one is from Pathfinder, not from Nolzur´s, the guy has a name, Valeros, Iconic fighter from Pathfinder.
Francisco Huerta-Constantino. True it’s Deep Cuts, but for people looking to buy it the package says Male Human Fighter.
@@TheMiniJunkie Aye, aye, but nowadays I think both companies had their own male/female class race of almost everything :) So... are you open to suggestions of what to paint next? Because a Pathfinder gargantuan white dragon will be awesome :D
I know the minis say they're prime ready, but I hear people say to prime anyway. You obviously don't feel the need for a primer?
Pawel M these? Nope! They are clearly primed already.
Maybe my hands are just too shacks to stay in the lines.
I get this is speed painting but I don’t see the need of cutting off your own sentences. LOL
