I have driven the W124 200D, and I was impressed. Although it was as slow as a car gets, it also got you where you were going with ease, in comfort, and in a timely fashion.

In 1999 I bought a 1987 300SDL. Only had 60,000 original miles. Paid $12,000, and was happy to do it. Letting that car go was the biggest mistake of my life. 12 years later the buyer STILL emails me to laugh at me once in a while.
I'm looking at a 80's 240D with a new engine in mint condition. If there's one car I know I can buy cheap and have for the rest of my life it's this one. Yeah it'll take a few years to memorize how to fix small quirks and there's forums for everything. I only use air conditioning a few weeks out of the year where I'm at. Also it'll be a 5 mile commute to work before rush hour. Life is good.

Until they started falling apart My dads 1983 240D mercedes still runs and he put a 300D rear end in it, the thing gets 36Mpg! It still absolutely runs fine, after the Texas snow that buried everything, desipite that sheer cold it still started! And the A/C according to my dad, turning it off gave you 1HP more, my dad worked on mercedes all his life and they never quit running when he drove them!

As someone who was born in Kyiv, roughly 70 miles from Chornobyl, 3 years before the disaster and was growing up with many W123s around, I ASSURE YOU, the Sarcophagus reactor confinement facility held up NOWHERE NEAR as well as the W123s! This is NOT a joke. Also the W123 has waaaay better build quality, smaller panel gaps and so forth.

My 1983 300D has 443,000 miles and runs great. Freon leaks out after 3-4 months, cruise control, central locking and attend motor don't work but other than that it's amazing. Best car I've ever had.

+banpeinet It's a bit of a rat's nest. Check out the bow on the body line and the rust on the front driver's side panel and rockers. There's the shitstorm of electrical-mechanical issues, yeah, more like 5 times 6 times if you're lucky. Also, most people now buy these for the engine. Everyone found one that's mint but the engine is shot, so they buy another that looks like it was raced in on a dirt track, swap it and get something halfway decent. Either way, if the kid has any sense he would get in touch with a machinist and remake all the parts from scratch. Half way cheaper than buying them.
Love the color. Someone swapped later fog lights to this one. That year the fog lights were clear. The '78 also had the "evil servo" in the Chrysler-designed automated climate control. Manual control from a 240D is much better, as is the later ACCII from about 1980 on. I have an '83 300D (turbodiesel) and I used to have a '77 240D. I swapped the 240D manual transmission into the 300D for the best combination Mercedes never made. My 300D is up to 344,000 miles and still going, just not going real fast. Top speed is about 110, and it likes to cruise about 85, but you're still not going to win any races.
+Robert S He he, we got the 4-speed manual as standard in the UK, 5-speed or the infamous clunk-o-matic as extra-cost options. Never seen a 300D with the 4-speed manual though. Equally though, we never got the turbodiesel engine as the turbo goes where the steering column needs to be for right-hand drive. 344,000 miles, not even run-in yet, a friend of mine has an '86 300 TD (T for turnier or estate/station wagon in German, not for turbo) first of the W124s, it was originally his dads company car and it's been in his family all its life, now just over 850,000 miles. He had it restored by a Mercedes specialist in 2014 as it was looking a bit sad (no rust but the paint was flat and it had picked up various bits of damage in its life as it was always, and still is a working car not a show queen) when the engine guy pulled the engine down (never been apart in its life) they could still see the factory honing marks in the bores. The engine guy did say that if it ran ok just leave the engine, they really are that strong if looked after properly, but my friend wanted to do a proper job as he intends passing the car on to his kids and he wanted to finally sort the persistent slight oil weep from the head/block joint area that the car had had since it was about 6 years old. That's got the 5-speed manual box in it...
My mother used to have a 1981 240D. It was the definition of slow. 0-60 took the better part of an afternoon and you're right. That car liked 50. It didn't really like much more. You could coax it to 60 but it sounded like it was being forced. But man, it really was well made, incredibly comfortable, wonderful to drive and extremely reliable. And loud. The 4 cylinder diesel sounded like rocks in a blender, especially cold. It had independent temperature controls for the driver and passenger and the whole design just made sense. I miss it.
American Luxury cars back in 1978 all had standard air conditioner and it was a lot better than the mercedes one. That automatic climate control that mercedes used until 1980 was a licenced version of chrysler's autotemp, and it was a US-market only option. (mercedes owner here). Cadillac had automatic air conditioner since 1964 and lincoln since 1965.
I have the w123 tdt (wagon) 1981, and I'm so glad found it. picked it up pretty cheap 2k and 2 small rust spots! I drive it 50+ miles a day for work, great fuel economy and never left me stranded. Thank God! True reliable car!!
Used to have an 82 240d with a 4 speed. What made that car so great was that everything was made to be taken apart and worked on. the fuel filter was under the hood right there to be replaced when needed. The radiator came out in a snap. and everything just worked. the AC just needed to be recharged, and it worked. It stopped on a dime, shifted nice, started every single morning, night, midday, noon, or whenever. Now that I think of it, I really miss the smell of diesel additive that was kept in the door that no matter what you did, no matter how many bottles you bought, they always leaked. I miss that car, and look forward to my next.

My dad used to have this car back in 97 but the turbo. Was such a cool car and he loved it. He never really had problems with his though because he was quiet the gear head. If you used to built drag cars back in the 80's like he did I hope to God you could at least keep this car running. He eventually gave the car away to my cousin and bought a 1989 twin turbo Supra.

This was my first car, though silver with blue leather interior. I had it for a few halcyon months, my summer leading into senior year of high school, before it was rear-ended by a Ford Explorer going 50mph, crushing the rear end on the first Friday of the year. Bastard had a new radiator and less than 100k miles on it. I'd still be driving it today if it hadn't been totaled. The first time I watched this video, every critique and observation was so accurate and flooded me with such memories, I almost cried. So thanks.
Who bought these, you ask. Funny you show the old Excel package. Bill Gates had the 4-door turbo version. (around the time he had a Porsche 911 as well) He called it "the world's fastest slow car". I had a couple of the W115-bodied 4-cylinder Diesels. You gave up acceleration and shear top speed (the governor was factory set to about 80mph) but in every other way these cars excelled. Once you got it up to speed, the independent suspension allowed you to become a Practicing Momentumist, where you combat the inability to go fast by never slowing down. Re Anywhere other than US nope, but I don't think it is required now since there are a lot of US users converted their lights and bumpers to Euro spec, strangely many german users are converting them to US spec...
My dad and I have spent a lot of time building the 300D he got when he was out of college. I grew up in that car and it’s great. Turbo-Diesel Yellow with Palomino interior. It’s the best car I’ve ever been in, and his other car is a 2014 C63.
In Hungary/Eastern Europe the diesel Mercedes W123's are considered the absolute bulletproof cars. People drive them around until ~600.000 km (370.000 miles, no engine rebuild needed), then someone from Afghanistan or Pakistan buys them, and people over there tend to drive these well above 1.000.000 km (620.000 miles), usually as taxis. I'm not sure if there were any 200D cars in the USA, but the 300D is the one that is "faster". The 200D (i4) had only 54 (later 59) horsepower. Not the best way to move 1,6 tonnes of Mercedes around. /sorry for my English, blablabla/

I have a 1983 w123 300 td. It's at 331k miles now and is still running like a champ! Like the video says, the main problem is the a/c being so unreliable. But even with the turbo it's still a turtle, and is a little sketchy to drive on the highway. Great town car though, very comfy drive. It's easy to see that with proper maintenance these old diesels can last forever
Chernobyl sarcophagus wasn't brilliant analog, because that was built in hurry and is full of holes / verge of collapsing. That's why they are building new one. Other than that great review
Owner of an '84 300TDT here. I got lucky, I have one of the most desirable of the W123s, wagon plus turbo. I'd have had to go to Europe to get the stick-shift, so I did settle there. I love your metaphors. I don't think I could have put it better myself than "suit of lead" or "gravel falling out of a wheelbarrow". I am of the opinion that the W123 diesels are the best cars MB ever made.

My mother used to have a 1981 240D. It was the definition of slow. 0-60 took the better part of an afternoon and you're right. That car liked 50. It didn't really like much more. You could coax it to 60 but it sounded like it was being forced. But man, it really was well made, incredibly comfortable, wonderful to drive and extremely reliable. And loud. The 4 cylinder diesel sounded like rocks in a blender, especially cold. It had independent temperature controls for the driver and passenger and the whole design just made sense.
I miss it.
American Luxury cars back in 1978 all had standard air conditioner and it was a lot better than the mercedes one. That automatic climate control that mercedes used until 1980 was a licenced version of chrysler's autotemp, and it was a US-market only option. (mercedes owner here). Cadillac had automatic air conditioner since 1964 and lincoln since 1965.

I have the w123 tdt (wagon) 1981, and I'm so glad found it. picked it up pretty cheap 2k and 2 small rust spots! I drive it 50+ miles a day for work, great fuel economy and never left me stranded. Thank God! True reliable car!!
Used to have an 82 240d with a 4 speed. What made that car so great was that everything was made to be taken apart and worked on. the fuel filter was under the hood right there to be replaced when needed. The radiator came out in a snap. and everything just worked. the AC just needed to be recharged, and it worked. It stopped on a dime, shifted nice, started every single morning, night, midday, noon, or whenever. Now that I think of it, I really miss the smell of diesel additive that was kept in the door that no matter what you did, no matter how many bottles you bought, they always leaked. I miss that car, and look forward to my next.

Mercedes Benz cars will always be Nostalgic to me Because as a kid I was around so many of them growing up I could nt help but love them my favorite is the w126 and 140 124 and the r107 and of course the 123
My dad used to have this car back in 97 but the turbo. Was such a cool car and he loved it. He never really had problems with his though because he was quiet the gear head. If you used to built drag cars back in the 80's like he did I hope to God you could at least keep this car running.
He eventually gave the car away to my cousin and bought a 1989 twin turbo Supra.

Yay! I grew up in a w123, followed by 124s and now we have an 89 wagon and a 97 sedan. Diesel Benzes are such a huge part of my childhood, it brings me so much joy for them to be cool again.
European lights looks much prettier
This was my first car, though silver with blue leather interior. I had it for a few halcyon months, my summer leading into senior year of high school, before it was rear-ended by a Ford Explorer going 50mph, crushing the rear end on the first Friday of the year. Bastard had a new radiator and less than 100k miles on it. I'd still be driving it today if it hadn't been totaled.
The first time I watched this video, every critique and observation was so accurate and flooded me with such memories, I almost cried. So thanks.

Who bought these, you ask. Funny you show the old Excel package. Bill Gates had the 4-door turbo version. (around the time he had a Porsche 911 as well) He called it "the world's fastest slow car". I had a couple of the W115-bodied 4-cylinder Diesels. You gave up acceleration and shear top speed (the governor was factory set to about 80mph) but in every other way these cars excelled. Once you got it up to speed, the independent suspension allowed you to become a Practicing Momentumist, where you combat the inability to go fast by never slowing down. Rust killed mine, or I would be driving them still.

After doing a little research, the ones sent Africa were often extremely base model, which fixes what little issues they have from degradable wiring.

Re Anywhere other than US nope, but I don't think it is required now since there are a lot of US users converted their lights and bumpers to Euro spec, strangely many german users are converting them to US spec...
My dad and I have spent a lot of time building the 300D he got when he was out of college. I grew up in that car and it’s great. Turbo-Diesel Yellow with Palomino interior. It’s the best car I’ve ever been in, and his other car is a 2014 C63.

In Hungary/Eastern Europe the diesel Mercedes W123's are considered the absolute bulletproof cars. People drive them around until ~600.000 km (370.000 miles, no engine rebuild needed), then someone from Afghanistan or Pakistan buys them, and people over there tend to drive these well above 1.000.000 km (620.000 miles), usually as taxis.
I'm not sure if there were any 200D cars in the USA, but the 300D is the one that is "faster". The 200D (i4) had only 54 (later 59) horsepower. Not the best way to move 1,6 tonnes of Mercedes around.

I have a 1983 w123 300 td. It's at 331k miles now and is still running like a champ! Like the video says, the main problem is the a/c being so unreliable. But even with the turbo it's still a turtle, and is a little sketchy to drive on the highway. Great town car though, very comfy drive. It's easy to see that with proper maintenance these old diesels can last forever
Chernobyl sarcophagus wasn't brilliant analog, because that was built in hurry and is full of holes / verge of collapsing. That's why they are building new one. Other than that great review

Owner of an '84 300TDT here. I got lucky, I have one of the most desirable of the W123s, wagon plus turbo. I'd have had to go to Europe to get the stick-shift, so I did settle there.
