Panasonic really needs to put real-time LUT into MFT cameras. I bet the sales are gonna skyrocket

    • @michaeld5888
      @michaeld5888 3 місяці тому

Skyrocketing sales is not something likely in the camera industry. Looking at a camera dealer page there is no Panasonic without a hump on the top apart from the full frame S9 which is where their interest really lies. Comparing as done in this article a contemporary camera with what are obsolete cameras seems a bit of a stretch. A comparison camera to the Fuji X100 VI as a contemporary compact could be the Leica D'Lux 8 with an old sensor which is pretty much the same price but lacking in many features.

I feel like Panasonic could really hit the sweet spot for a large group of people with a thoughtfully refreshed GX9. Give me a small form factor camera with solid photo and video specs, evf, phase detection af, and real time luts and I'll be so so happy. Open-gate could be the cherry on top. I currently bounce between Fuji x100v and Nikon Z, but would happily swap both for something like that. "all i want is the perfect camera"

All the MFT cameras released after Panasonic first included the feature in a camera (S5II) have had real time LUT (So the G9II, GH7, etc.). The problem now is they no longer produce compact MFT cameras to take advantage of the niche the old GX85/9 and stuff like the X100 series embody.

I actually do not like these photo styles. Many times a dial 0r function button is used ( wasted) on the top of the camera. Also, you will be shooting in JPEG to get any use. Also, It is just too easy to add the preset grading when editing for FREE.

I own both X100F and GX9. Has been using the GX9 for the past 4 years, an absolute underdog I must say. Have been using 2 lenses only: The Leica 25mm f1.4 is a gem and the Olympus 12mm f2 is very sharp. The GX9 is arguably more professional than the X100F. If you love B&W, the L.Monochrome D profile on the GX9 is stunning, better than ACROS on X100F, not on the Leica level yet but the style really stands out. Sometimes you can’t tell if it’s taken by film or GX9.

The m43 is mostly a prosummer/enthusiast segment, there's less professionals in it, hence, less big bucks. Owning both GX9 and X-T30 II and to me the GX9 doesn't lag behind in most of my use cases. It even beats the Fuji in several circumstances, such as when I actually need more DoF while no need to slow down on aperture (taking shots of small stuffs in a tight-spaced exhibition for example).
Lumix's red and blue do look really poppy when paired with Leica M43 lenses and I really like how the images come out. Monochrome is great too.
For downsides, autofocus system is aged, misses quite often. EVF is rather bad in bright light conditions.
For now I'm more into Fuji's film sim so I'm gonna part way with the GX9. Really hope that Panasonic makes a successor to this great camera.

I have a GX80, pretty much similar to GX9, the 16mp sensor being the only big difference. The prices of both used GX9 and the GX80 are going up in the last year since the Fuji-rangefinder-mania. I got mine for 300eur with 12-32, now the body only is selling for 400eur... I found the 20mm 1.7 for less than half of today's prices...
Regarding specs the GX80 vs GX9 there are no big differences, and the 2x used price for GX9 is hard to justify just for 16 vs 20mpx sensor difference.
The GX80 is a great budged every day carry camera paired with a 12-32 kit lens (surprisingly sharp) and a 20mm 1.7 for night time. That 20mm is crazy sharp lens...don't mind the slower focusing...
A little bit of playing with picture styles can give you nice SOOC jpegs in colour and especially B&W (L.monochrome+orange filter), not like the Fuji, but still really great.
Anyone with a tight budget considering an EDC street camera should put the GX80/85 in the top 3 choices...

Great review. I am pretty sure I saw a review that was explaining that while the new x100 does have a 40mp sensor, the lens isn't able to keep up with it. I think interchangeable lenses is a huge advantage for any camera over a fixed lens body. Users can start experimenting with vintage lenses that give them the unique looks they want without the need for artificial film simulators. Although, I also think an Adobe subscription with access to Light Room is a must. Where they can create extremely unique pre-sets for their pictures. With only 20 film filters on the x100, how unique will your shots actually look?

But you‘re right it‘s actually not that much better looking on real world use cases. I bought the GX9 more than 2 years ago, used for less than 500€. And it is still my everyday cam beside the G9ii. Especially together with the Panaleica 15mm 1.7 this is a great camera. Being a pretty tall guy the tilting EVF is a huge benefit as I can easily make pictures in Rolleiflex style. Love it! We are waiting for the new GX9ii, and it would take very little to make it an even more fearsome competitor for Fuji. Panasonic has everything needed to do it: new 25mpx sensor, LUT like on the S9, new AF...just add a larger and more resolute viewfinder and you will have the perfect "street camera" (I don't think they will include a superlative video mode like for the G9 or the GH7, but it will certainly be an upgrade compared to the GX9). I believe, as many photographers say, that on the FF 24mpx are still enough, so on the m43 25mpx will still be more than enough to guarantee exceptional photos.

Just picked up a GX9 with a 20mm F1.7 with a 6 month guarantee for £600 and a 12-60mm for £160 from LCE (London Camera Exchange) looking at prices elsewhere this is a bargain, in near mint with only a few hundred shutter count, well chuffed. Probably go for the 45-175mm as well for some wildlife while hiking, such a compact, light and brilliant set up for out and about and street photography

nice video, but, they are different cameras for different customers
Leaf shutter (and the benefits when working with flash) on the Fuji and built in ND filter are things that any MILC just can't do
Panasonic colours just can't compete with Fuji film simulations out of the camera (granted subjective)
But really if you want a small pocketable camera this camera or the Fuji X-e series is a good option

I really enjoyed the GX8 body when I tried it out. The build quality and EVF were great, but I couldn't justify having that camera and a whole new suite of lenses when I already have the Sony A7CII. It was marginally lighter for m4/3 compared to full frame, but the difference was negligible imo.

I'd say that though the GX9 is a great camera, it would generally not be my go-to Lumix body for a rangefinder design.
I would most likely prefer either the GX80/85 for the much cheaper price and slightly better ergos (to my eye).
One thing that I really don't like about either the GX9 or the GX80 though, is really the viewfinder. It's a 16:9 TFT panel which was really made for camcorders, but are absolutely not meant to display a 4:3 image for photography. They are seemingly high res, but contrast ratio is really not that good and overall they are not a great experience. Also, the microphone port is lacking on both of those.
The GX7 exists, but is still using the same formula as the GX80, and the GX80 is much better looking.
If you're okay with a slightly taller camera than the X100VI (only by a few mm), but you want a camera body that is still affordable and has all the qualities of the GX9 (including the tilting EVF, 20MP sensor and great video, newer DFD AF ect) but you don't want to make compromises on the viewfinder as you want a large OLED one, and you want to be able to use external microphones to properly take advantage of that nice video : Look no further than the Lumix GX8. This camera really is a hidden gem. Think of it as Lumix's more practical equivalent of the Olympus Pen F.

This camera does not serve the same market of the x100v. The lack of optical viewfinder was an immediate no for me (aesthetically and for my personal use), and that’s before we get into any internals. I did like the changeable lens option though, which is why I got the Xpro2, something I think better compares to what a potential x100v customer is looking for.

X100 series customer here, i think you're underestimating the market, who wants the Fuji, and why. When I decided I wanted a small everyday carry camera a year or so ago the V was already hard to get and wayyy out of my price budget. All the features of the X100VI are nice but my main focus simply boiled down to something I could take with me for everyday usage. Don't really care that much for the optical viewfinder, leaf shutter, or the manual controls. All those things are nice to have but not essential for my needs. What does interest me the most is the SOC jpgs. I love my current GX85 but that's the main gap, so I've had a x100VI on pre-order for months, but that delivery date keeps getting pushed back. I'm still looking forward to getting one (if I ever do) but if Panasonic releases an updated version of a GX series camera or if new pancake lenses come out for the S9, then I'm perfectly happy to go with one of those cameras.

    • @jerry.cray_II

@@jacobterrazas3147 what you’ve described is a camera that was out of the price range you were willing to pay and had a bunch of features you didn’t care for. That means you’re not its target market. It can have things that you like about it and willing to pay for and you still not be what you’re really looking for. It sounds like you found the camera that was more aligned with what you needed and cared about. I liked the x100v all except for the price that I could not afford, so an actual comparable alternative for me was the X-Pro 2 used. To me, a defining feature of the rangefinder film cameras were literally the rangefinder optical viewfinder and the exposure dials. The Lumix has neither of those, so it was an immediate no for me regardless of any other features. But it is a cool compact camera nonetheless!
