Great video! And a lot of great points you've mentioned including the need for detailed install instructions (now available). Just on the touch module, there are a few games (ecco and NBA in particular) that use the start button extensively, and require long holds during game play. This was the reason behind the optional touch module as our last kits would sometimes trigger the scaling mode change during these games.
The SMS aspect - This aspect was chosen to match up with how the stock screen displayed SMS video. With the HDMI I didn't think it was as important so it was rendered as a SMS would on a real TV, but when played on the GG, I've preserved the GG's unique scaling. If we squished it up there'd be significant bordering and loss of active area as well as very non integer scaling.
Happy to answer any questions anyone has!
Thanks again for the great video!

Love the Benn Venn stuff. Fitted a few to different systems and always great quality. Good video too!

The Atari Lynx I think was the technical powerhouse of the generation. Also crippled by early color lcd tech.

I have installed the BennVenn IPS panels into both of my Lynx II units and they are excellent.

    That's a nice mod!
I too had the old BennVen screen but the new looks fantastic.
Kudos for doing it without instructions ;)

Looking at fixing a friend's Game Gear in the near future myself, so this was very informative for a good screen mod if it needs it. I'll have to look at your other Game Gear videos as I've never recapped one of these before.

Nice video. I have 2 x Atari Lynx II with BennVenn IPS panels I installed. Great fun. The new C64 top shell fitted great too :)

I've been waiting for this, I really noticed the shimmering in wonder boy and devilish so much it was distracting.

Next step from IPS panels are probably OLED panels. I wonder if there are some on the market with this size.

Nice upgrade. I did the V1 upgrade shortly after you released that video. While it wasn't as hard as doing the mcwill upgrade it still wasn't fun for me due to a solder bridge issue.
If I was to do another game gear I think I would do the upgrade from retrosix. While this looks nicer, the cleanscreen version looks like it the easiest install by far.

FYI, when you are using rechargeable batteries you only have 7.2 volts instead of 9 volts when using 6 AA batteries.
Some older devices won't even run on rechargeable batteries because of too low voltage.

Did you ever find a solution to the colour issue on the first one you did? I've got what appears to ve the exact same board revision and am experiencing the same problem. Ben is looking into it, but just wondering in the meantime.

Nope. I haven't looked into, but it's interesting you're having the same issue with the same board. I wonder if Ben will come up with a solution, I haven't spoken to him recently

You mention McWill in your review, have you had a chance to try out the McWill v4? It's also 640x480 IPS screen with integer scaling. The bonus is that it's actually available for purchase on console5 today (instead of sometime later in 2024 like BV). I'd love to see a side by side review.

    • @TheRetroChannel

I haven't tried out McWill V4, only the previous version. To be honest I wasn't even aware they released a 640x480 version. If I ever get one I'll be sure to do a comparison, but I imagine with the same resolution they will both look very similar

@@TheRetroChannel I just ordered a McWill and will try it out. I still have a V1.0 (back in 2015 when Marco was selling them direct on AtariAge) I'm interested to see what changed as well.

How does it compare to the Retrosix IPS screen mod?

    • @bennvennelectronics
      @bennvennelectronics 5 місяців тому +1

Ours has 4x the pixel density, integer scaling, hdmi out, no shimmer or frame tearing, lowest power consumption in its class. R6 uses older low resolution IPS panel with non-integer scaling (pixels aren't scaled up evenly causing a wobbling effect on moving images), no HDMI, higher power consumption. Every kit we ship is fully tested here on a gamegear so it'll arrive defect free. R6 ships with no QC and consequently, a high defect&return rate (as reported in our discord)
