I am on my second 9th v-6 Accord and sun in-law has 2014 odyssey. My friend Scott has a transmission shop he told me Honda requires filter replacement when it leeks or when you rebuild the unit. However Scott thinks it best to change the filter at 30,000 k 100,000 k 200,000k and so on.. then, I change 3 qt. At every other oil change (over kill I think). I change the oil after 30% oil life is reached. We have had no problems thus far knock wood.
Your filter looks excellent. I just did mine and cut it open at 45,000 miles, still looks great. I will not bother changing it again for maybe 100,000 miles.
@@3dsmackdown I don't give a crap about Honda service managers. I have towed for about 60,000 miles now, do a 1x fluid change every 10,000 miles, and have nothing on the magnetic plug when I change fluid. There is nothing for a filter to catch when you are getting virtually no wear.
@@mkc9525This was a discussion about transmissions not motor oil changes. Revealing to the online car community that you’re ignorant about even regular motor oil changes is concerning. Choose to remain prideful, you’re still in the wrong in the end. I promise you won’t make it to 300K miles. Motor oil changes should be every 5K miles, manufacturers have been gradually increasing oil change intervals driven by profit. The average margin on an automobile sale is 3-5%. Companies make most of their money through financing and overpriced replacement parts. If you don’t want to educate yourself on Honda’s extensive history of recalls and lawsuits, then keep paying attention to the cable news. There’s a reason why they stopped recommending 90K transmission oil changes and went straight down to 30K. It’s still not enough, the oil is becoming very acidic and dark at even at 30K miles. This is a transmission, there’s no soot from combustion getting in. Its color comes purely from acidity and being burnt. These companies are not your friends and neither is that silly manual telling you maintenance intervals. Trust what engineers and engineers builders tell you and you’ll get to 350K that easy. By the way the nonexistent metal you’re looking for is trapped in the filters, rarely does it make it down to the plug.
Wow that was a surgical opening of the ATF filter 👍. After seeing this, makes me wonder 🤔 why Honda engineers did not consider a larger filter? Glad I just replaced mine at 20k and will be doing a follow up drain next week. Thanks for posting
I dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know a way to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot my password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Alvaro Kaison i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I will see what I can do. If I get the time to make it I will post it up. Have a second kid on the way any day now so working on what projects I can and have planned out at the moment.
? I just changed my ATF yesterday on my pilot with 30k miles and failed to think of doing this filter change. Any idea if I could wait till the 60k mark to do it then with another ATF change or should I just do so sooner. Do you think it would cause any damages if I wait?
Yes, but it's also at the suggested maintenance point as well. So technically i'm a bit over due since towing is to be done at 15,000 mile change and regular driving is to be changed at 30,000.
I believe there are two filters. One inside the transmission and one outside. Obviously the one inside would be lifetime as you cannot access it. The outside one I don’t think Honda has a specific requirement to replace it however because it’s a filter and it does one thing which is trap debris, like any other filter on the vehicle we replace them. So might as well replace this one while your at it as the fluid does get nasty over time. There wasn’t anything terrible in the filter but best to replace it with a new one so that you can increase the effectiveness of your filter and increase transmission life.
I replace the tranny filter on my Subaru every 30k, I now have 380k on the car and it shift very smooth. My Mazda Protege I had since new only did 60K with no filter change when the transmission failed. Change your trans filter its cheap insurance.
Yes you are correct. I used the wrong word for the video. after I made the recording I just left it there. There still is a lot of mushy metal shavings but big flakes would have been very worry some.
Thanks for confirming which way the fluid must flow due to the check valve.

Honda service managers love comments like this. SMH!

@Alvaro Kaison it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much you really help me out!
@Brennan Derek Glad I could help :)
Replace with a derale remote transmission filter kit. Uses a spin on filter. Vastly superior
I think my dealer recommends replacing the transaxle fluid and filter between 45k and 60k.
After seeing this, I’ll favor the 45k intervals.
Thank you for sharing. Great work!
Yuriy, I have a ‘21 Ridgeline with the ZF 9speed.. Does that have an external filter??
Yo thank you Yuriy, and F all those people that say do not change easy parts that common sense would say need to be changed.
How did you break the Barb off the filter
Thanks for the video. Where is this filter located?
I have a video just for that. Its right behind the radiator on the left drivers side. ua-cam.com/video/edXZi29XYsg/v-deo.html
Can you do a video for changing the fluid in the transfer case?
I will see what I can do. If I get the time to make it I will post it up. Have a second kid on the way any day now so working on what projects I can and have planned out at the moment.

It’s not necessary to change it but while you are there might as well. It’s inexpensive and additional cheap insurance.
@@YuriyMotso thanks man, glad I came across your video. I will definitely change it out at 60k
Hey man. I have changed my transmission fluid but have no clue where the filter is located. Do u have a video?
That I do have. ua-cam.com/video/edXZi29XYsg/v-deo.html
How do you check transmission fluid level on 2021 Ridgeline? I checked but it seems like there isn’t any dipstick
I have it explained here ua-cam.com/video/edXZi29XYsg/v-deo.html
What is the recommended transmission oil change
Every 30k
Was that from after the cross country tow and overheat?
Yes, but it's also at the suggested maintenance point as well. So technically i'm a bit over due since towing is to be done at 15,000 mile change and regular driving is to be changed at 30,000.
Looks remarkably clean. I thought this was a lifetime item. Where did you see a replacement schedule for it ???
I believe there are two filters. One inside the transmission and one outside. Obviously the one inside would be lifetime as you cannot access it. isn't there an internal one also?
No
Is this a general or general ridgeline? Where does it come from?
Not sure if I understand the question but the filter is on all ridge lines gen 2.
@@YuriyMotso sorry spell check got me it was supposed to say gen1 or gen2
There's nothing wrong with that filter. It looks great.
You work for Honda service department Sir/Mam?
@@3dsmackdown yes.
Honda recommends change oil then trans ! 😂
The 10 mm bolt that holds the clamp around the filter is a pain in the neck to removed it. Only by touch totally blind why honda?
Not gummed up bro.. your looking for metal shavings
Yes you are correct. I used the wrong word for the video. after I made the recording I just left it there. There still is a lot of mushy metal shavings but big flakes would have been very worry some.
@@YuriyMotso I'm looking and are you looking to add a extra cooler
What a cheap a__ filter. Honda should do better
