Nicely done, nice tip on the socket over the drill bit. I've run those fans in a PC for years 24/7/365 and they never failed. I probably still have them in a box somewhere and I bet they still work.
Oooh thats good to hear ! Im just a little concerned about the potential temperatures they might have to work in ? ..... only one way to find out ! Lol
absolute legend paul. I want to make one. Perhaps tuck it up under the centre of the dash flat to it you might be able to hide it behind the switch panel
Richyriches tube .. glad ive been of some inspiration ! Im looking forward to getting it in the car now and seeing how it performs! Of course it might be a complete failure 🤷♂️ lol
It’s simplicity is key. If it doesn’t quite work as predicted, I’m sure with some tweaking you can get it working well. For the Moke, I’ll definitely be needing a version that blows some warm air on my feet though..!
I think if it works, which it should, you’ve just had bad obsessions pants down, although theirs is very nice, I bet it took them weeks to make. Top work paul
Great idea my only point is you are not using fresh air from outside the cabin, from past experience damp air from the cabin won’t clear a screen very well, I have thought about this a few times and would definitely use a fresh air supply knowing how damp a mini can get in the footwell 👍
Paul, would a dashboard display dimmer switch act a a speed control for the fans maybe? If so then you could block up the ends of the cover plate for maximum performance. I think the heat of the water will be fine with high impact plastic...good luck buddy!
You could also use a pwm pulse width modulator from eBay to control the speed also which is what I plan to do in my mini heater some have an on off switch built in too
Brad Farrant well it’s certainly a different approach to that huge thing that hangs under the dash ! It might work 🤷♂️ .... i was considering a Ka heater valve ? That way i can use a switch to turn the hot water on and off ? ...... but gonna try it without at first just to see how it goes !
Wow you have certainly cut that down to size, you must have saved a bit of weight. I do quite like the old Mini unit, and yes they aren't the most efficient of items but far superior to say an old Triumph or Mgb unit of same era. Anyway like the mod.
geoff burrill .. i do agree the mini unit is ok , it does the job for sure ! But ive never really liked how much space it takes up .... looking forward to getting it in the car now to see how good or bad it is !
Looks like a nice little mod! I think you should be ok heat-wise as they seem to be GFX card cooling fans (?) which should be resistant to a bit of the old therma!
@@Xpp. Well GFX cards run generally at about 65-70C when pushed, but the fans really kick in at around 90 so they must function to that temp plus a good allowance I would say.... Oh, I also meant to say plug those gaps for better air flow through the rad!
for my frefernece id use a foam or rubber seal between the mount plate and matrix just so its gonna draw more efficiently. or in the case of computers , foil tape can sometimes suffice ha. very inventive tho , might have to think of something like this for mine if i cant figure out why my heaters dont work ha
I did consider filling in those side bits , but after having a think on it i dont know if it would cause an excessive heat build up when they’re not switched on ? Probably melt the cheap fans ? I thought leaving it open like that would help some of the heat escape ?
Great video again Paul. Will you rig your switches so that you can start with 2 fans running and then drop down to just 1 fan as the car warms up? I have had Minis for nearly 40 years and cannot imagine your streamlined unit being anything other than an improvement. Only car I had with a worse heater was an early Landrover.
Neil Bedford ... i can only hope it actually works ?!?! .... i will wire them both together because one fan does one screen vent each so having them staged isn’t needed although in another comment someone suggested a variable resistor to alter fan speed ! That sounds good !
@@Xpp. , I used the old heater chassis and slipped it in front of the heater and uses bolts to fit it in front of matrix, as your idea,,,,,both good Mate.
I was thinking of blocking off those ends but then i thought it might create a bit of a heat trap ? And using plastic fans im not sure they would survive ? ....... ive checked , it says ‘wrong way idiot’ on the other side 😂
Chris Beck .. ive never had a heater in my mini but steaming windows in the winter time was an issue last year .... im hoping the recirculating heated cabin air might be enough to keep it clear ? But of course if it does need outside air then i’ll have to rethink it all again ! Its all trial and error this you know lol

Bravo excellent good video brother nicely well done good job
Looks a lot more compact, worth trying to see how it goes👍

Thats pretty much what im hoping !
YES! I’ve been looking for a heater for my moke for ages. Now I’m going to make one. Will be good to see how yours performs.

Hahaa but they have A/C too ! And directional flaps !! Everyone likes directional flaps 😬
Nice idea, and slightly less involved than the bad obsession Binky's heater box!
Definitely less involved than binky’s one !

Well im hoping to pipe in some fresh air ? I get what your saying ! Moist floor mat air might not be ideal lol
just come across this. Did you fit it to the MINI? with pictures

Oooh yeah now thats an idea !! I think you can get variable resistors with an ‘off position! I might look into that ! Could be a neat touch !
You could also use a pwm pulse width modulator from eBay to control the speed also which is what I plan to do in my mini heater some have an on off switch built in too
Great idea hope it works, be interesting to see what the cabin temp is like on a warm day due to heat radiating off the matrix

Paul P ‘s Mini build yeah let’s hope so, definitely interested to see the results

Thats good to hear you say that ! Thats really my only concern is if they will handle the heat ?

I like the way you're thinking that's going to work great and it's always good to have a good blower😆😀😂😘
Lets hope so !! Cant wait to get it in the car now !

@@Xpp. will the heater be permanent plumbed in to hot or will you have it valved/switchable
You could mount it flat, fans up, under the dash and you wouldn’t see it at all
Yeah thats o possibility! I will have to size it up when i fit it
nice idea..have you fitted it yet?
Hiya !! Unfortunately ive had so much going on i simply havent had the chance to fit it ! But rest assured when i do they’ll be a video on it !

Love it. I am yet to fit my compact heater
Ahhh yeah you bought one didnt you ! At least yours is guaranteed to work ! Mine might explode in a ball of flames 😂😂
I used a 12 v computer fan from rs comp.... Very good cfm.
I did buy a few 4” computer fans to start with but channeling the air was easier with these !
@@Xpp. , I used the old heater chassis and slipped it in front of the heater and uses bolts to fit it in front of matrix, as your idea,,,,,both good Mate.
👌 defo keep us updated on this 👍
Alex nse will do !! Just need to find the enthusiasm to get it in the car and use the car lol
Thing you will need to block the ends off that box . Also you sure the fans the right way round 👍😂🤣

Taking the front seats out? Are you turning it into a shorty?? 🤣🤣 that would be even more crazy!
Hahaa .... not quite that mad !
Genius, can't be worse than original at worst lol
Its all trial and error ! If it works i’ll label myself as a genius 😂😂
Mini heater has always been poor .. with a trickle of air to a rapidly steaming up windscreen, 3rd fan to suck air from outside .?

You KNOW you CAN buy an much better Kit-Car Heater [FULL-KIT] With 3 speed dial for just £165.
