The Chola empire ruled South India, Sri Lanka, Lakshadweep, Maldives, and parts of Southeast Asia during the 10th and 11th centuries AD about the same time as Mahmud Ghaznavi. There was a powerful Chola ruler called Paranthaka who ruled for 40 years. Towards the end of his reign, he was defeated in battle and his son was killed. The empire fell into decline and there were some 5-6 kings for the next 50 years. During this period, we know from inscriptions that a Chola prince named Aditya Karikala was killed. His father Sundara Chola was then the king. Sundara Chola was succeeded by his cousin Madhurantaka. It is believed that Maduranthaka had killed Aditya Karikala who was his nephew in order to capture the throne. But after Maduranthaka died, he was succeeded by Aditya Karikala's younger brother, Raja Raja Chola I, one of India's greatest emperors. Now all this is recorded history based on which Kalki has written his book of course with some of his own embellishments.

I think they built the great temples in the east including Angkorvat. They were the true predecessors to Shivaji maharaj as the conquerers of the seas. Proto tamil script is used even today in some of those far flung places.

It's Chola empire brother. Southern Indian Empires are not very talked about so probably that's why you don't know about it. Cholas were the ones who won the most significant naval victory in southeast asian countries. That's the reason why you see temples like Angkorwat in Kombodia.

This movie is based on a classic Indian novel written in 50s. This movie couldn't be created due to the special and visual effects required to make this movie. Earlier Kamal Hassan was approached by Mani Ratnam some 20 years back for this movie but couldn't happen due to dates and creative limitations.
Fun fact: Aishwarya is playing the grey character, actually a villian.

Ps1 is more abt politics than war, politics for throne, somewhat similar to got, but it's not a copy in any way, cuz it's a adaptation to a novel, name same as movie, which was published in 1950s.
Btw trailer looks so good, the vfx is way better than the teaser, it means, by the time of release, the vfx will be more enhance more better, cuz post production work is still going on. I think it's pretty sure this movie will collect more than 500cr , in India, and ww box office more than 1000cr, obviously it's all depends on screenplay and direction, but I believe in mani ratman skills, he give 3 years in making the flim, and he has also stated that this is his dream project, he try to make the adaptation of novel in 1990 and in 2010,, but didn't get enough funds.
He really is into this project, that's why I believe, movie is going to be good.
