First time we saw Zuko crying on his knees in front of a father figure, he got burned and scarred. Season 3 zuko crying on his knees in front of a father figure, he’s accepted and loved
There's an aspect of Aang you don't really hear emphasized when people talk about his character. We all know how much grief Aang took on when he discovered the genocide of his people. That's an unfathomable amount of trauma to put on someone, let alone a 12-year-old kid. And we see through multiple other characters in the show how trauma can either change you or transform you entirely. But despite such a deep loss, who Aang is as a person doesn't waver. His perspective and maturity changes, but his peace-keepig values, his caring nature and sense of duty, his fun-loving attitude and sense of humor, and his deep love for those in his life stay firmly rooted in who he is.
Unpopular opinion: Aang is my favorite character. I know, I know, main character is usually the favorite, so unoriginal, but come on. It’s flipping AANG. Aang is so goofy and he matured SO much throughout the series. I love how he handles his challenges and how he lets his culture influence him. His back story is so sad, but he doesn’t let that disrupt his character. Even he doesn’t seek revenge. I love how he stuck to his culture and character and created something that’s unimaginable. His backstory is also very understandable from fearing so much responsibility, which is relatable. All this guilt is built up inside of him, but he doesn’t let that destroy him, rather he focuses on the present and tries to carry out his role. What do you guys think?
She doesn't even addressed it but in Manga aang has givven promise to Zuko if he goes nuts like Ozai to take zuko out and even his previous life Roku asks to take his grandsons life but Aang refused and tried peaceful way which exactly suits his character.
Honestly, Zukos redemption arc and relationship with Iroh is so crazy strong that even seeing him lifted to Irohs height on a UA-cam tier list makes me emotional.
It’s crazy how they have so many amazing female characters but never feel the need to outwardly be like “look at how we added powerful female characters” they just made incredible characters who happened to be female
Momo literally is king 👑 he is perfect 👌 and so amazing I will write a whole paragraph about how amazing he is he has a bootiful scream and is just so nice he has nice fur with a bootiful pattern and he is momo of the momoness he is basically should be at the top I can rant about him and I will he has the deepest feelings and he is the comedic relief and I have a pillow of him and his beauty he is lord mono of my heart ♥️ he is even more than just perfect she just is jealous of how bootiful momo is she only got Iroh right and momo can murder anyone they just wanted to make him wholesome all of my cats I have 5 are all named momo like momo 1 momo 2 momo 3 momo 4 and momo 5 he is so loyal and nice I can’t believe that anyone would think he is more than anything I can’t believe she doesn’t even care about momo and anyone would think he’s just FINE I AM SCREAMING AT THIS POINT AND NO ONE WILL EVER TAKE AWAY MY LOVE FOR MOMO HE IS JUST SO GOOOOOOOOD U DO NOT HAVE AN HEART IF U DO NOT BELIVE IN HIM U ARE ALL CRRRAAAZZZYYYY HEHEHEHEHHHAHAHHAHHHAH U ARE ALL CRAAAZZYY SO MOMO IS THE BEEEEAAAAASTTTTTT PERIOD
Personally, I didn't understand when Katara tried to find and kill the man who killed her mom and she acted like Aang wouldn't understand when his entire race was wiped out leaving him no living parents, grandparents, or siblings
Katara normally wouldn't say something like that to Aang or Sokka, but having the prospect of avenging her mother effectively turned her into a different person. It's like when Azula dangled the prospect of finally capturing Aang in Ba Sing Se to Zuko. Zuko is close to putting that behind him, but Azula ropes him back into being a more violent version of himself. That's what Zuko does to Katara when he gives her the possibility of avenging her mother. However, he also watches out for her throughout the journey as Iroh did for him. Zuko knows that killing Yon Rha wouldn't truly help Katara, but he also knew she needed closure on the matter. Ultimately, he handled the situation very well, and it's really shocking and horrifying to see Katara become so spiteful. Plus her flashback hits harder than almost any other moment in the show besides Zuko's reunion with Iroh. Suddenly it all makes sense why Katara takes betrayal so hard, why she's so distraught about losing people close to her. She literally found the corpse of her mother in the tent that she ran away from not 5 minutes earlier. That scene and The Southern Raiders ties everything together for Katara's character. It's why I believe it's the best stand-alone episode of the entire series.
Also she knew her mother before she died and how wonderful a person she was. Aang knew his people and everything but never had a real maternal figure in his life.
Aang is my favorite character. I have never admired someone so profoundly. Aang lost everything he loved (except for Appa), and he did not even have the time to process his loss. Even though Aang might seem immature, it's just his way of trying to still have a childhood and deal with his grief. Aang loves to have fun with Team Avatar because it was something he never got to experience. Even though he is quite goofy, he is undeniably the bravest character on the show. He never hesitates to help others, and yet he never wants to harm others in the process. Aang is kind, empathetic, caring and honest, despite the trauma he has been through. He always sees the best in people and I aspire to be like him.

I just loved that Katara was the one who defeated Azula as I see them as two sides of the same coin. They both lost their mother and were neglected because their fathers only cared about the war (in a way they both sort of see it as their purpose). Both girls felt great pressure to be a certain way. Azula had every privilege and Katara had to fight for everything, however Katara was free, when Azula was a slave. Katara went and fought for what she believed in while Azula was sent by her father to serve his purposes. Both Azula and Katara were very driven, and got what they wanted by using whatever method they found necessary. However Katara had propuse, while Azula didn't and that's why she lost her mind. Katara was nagging her friends because she didn't want to force them to do stuff, she cared about their common goal and without her neither Aang, Sokka or Toph would have gotten anywhere. I love her because she didn't care to be the center of attention, she just went on and did what she had to do. She let her friends shine. Katara was pretty much as powerful as Azula, when she almost killed Aang it was Katara who saved him both by getting him out be by healing him. Some may say that Azula turned out like that because she didn't have Uncle Iroh, however Katara didn't really have a father figure and chose to be nurturing and loving. I love Katara because she was so resilient and brave, it takes more courage to be like Katara than to be like Azula. Also, Katara was INVENTING water bending techniques, no one taught her, whatever she knew beforehand she had discovered by herself, and she did freeze a couple of soldiers in the beginning.
Finally! Katara is so underrated by fans and deserves much more love! Ppl usually just see her as "annoying mom girl, stopping others from having fun", when actually this bunch of kids would not have gotten anywhere without her. (Don't get me wrong, i love other characters as well, just see the point of this comment)
OMG finally someone who actually liked katara, she is my fave 🤗 and everyone just makes memes like: Someone: breathes Katara: my mother used to breathe But it's not like that she does not even talk about her a lot and katara went through a lot of change and she learned to have some fun like in the episode "the runaway" and she is really good at waterbending and imagine your mother died and your older brother said you were basically his mother, katara was used to being a mom to sokka and that's why she is the "mom" of team avatar and people call her annoying, but she was living with all this guilt and frustration after her mom died and she was in the tent and at first blaming herself but then she focused all the blame on that one dude and never letting it out and just trying to be kind and pulling everyone together but toph made her snap and sometimes she just get ticked off and let her emotions out but then pulls everything back in and being kind again and in the beginning, she was depending on aang a lot to do mostly everything but later (end of season 2/ season 3) she learned not to depend on him so much, she was already powerful by herself. Sorry for ranting :/
I agree on your take and I also love both of these girls but the "azula was like that because she didn't have iroh" is what get me because i do agree on that. Yeah katara didn't have iroh either but she also didn't have ozai as father figure? These two indeed are parallels, both are child prodigy, lost their mom, are superior compared to their brothers in term of power but katara despite not having father figure still has grangran and sokka (who is a good brother to her). She still have a loving community around her and born with loving nature thanks to her parents genes. But in azula's case, in one side she has this mad king as a father and ursa (as much as i like her) didn't really have any influenece on her and didn't know how to handle azula so she choose to just side with zuko instead. She's very absent mom for azula (not hating on ursa here since she's also abused by ozai) and iroh never really been closed to her since he was once a general and by the time he went back from war, azula was too far gone under ozai's influence but he still has hope for zuko since he knew zuko has a good heart. Azula didn't have anyone except her father who sees her as weapon, turning her into this monster that we knew her in the series. I knew we've seen her being bad ever since she was little, it's part of her nature indeed but i believe she wouldn't turn as BAD as in the series if she was born in a more normal household. Maybe she could turn bad like kuvira when she's grown but this monster that is azula that we know came from both nature and nurture and i think the nurture part has a bigger portion especially when you grew up in this dysfunctional royal family. I used to believe azula was irredemable but the more i look into it the more i believe she could at least be normal. Not this war weapon that his dad has turned her into.
I think the most interesting fact about Momo, is that he was intended to be monk Gyatso reincarnated. They likely didn't include it in the story because it'd take a lot of development, with little need for it. But it's cool to think about on rewatches!
I think it is much better if Gyatso and Momo have nothing to do with each other. There simply isn't a need for it, and it would just drag on the lore (which is perfect the way it is).
@@rhian6459 although it could explain how momo exists when literally everything from the air nomads disappeared, particularly there being no other lemurs or sky bison, except for momo. Could also explain why momo right after being chased by Aang decides to join the squad, as animals typically take longer to befriend, he even knew to give sokka food to avoid being the food. 🤔🤔

Azula’s mental break is in part due to not having an “Iroh-figure” in her life. Iroh loved Zuko, he was his mentor, but from their childhood he sort of ignored Azula (giving her a doll “because she’s a girl” for example, when Azula’s upbringing and ambitions go beyond that) I also love Iroh, and what I wrote just makes him more human. He’s not perfect and that’s great.
I think the giving her a doll was him just trying to humanize her. To make her feel more like a normal girl because that's what she needed; she just didn't appreciate the gesture. Zuko had low self-esteem and wanted really hard to be takebn seriously, so the knife made more sense. but I'm still with you, Iroh kind of gave up on Azula very quickly; but he never gave up on Zuko
@@mariosblago94 I don´t think Azula needed to be more like a girl. She needed someone to respect her and probably do something Ozai never did, take her the way she was. I think Ozai made her what she was and he could do so, because Azula had no other role model at all. That´s why I like the what if scenario of Piandao training Zuko in the art of the sword, but also Azula. That could have given her an alternative and planted a seed to grow quietly. Iroh could have done so, too yet I think she´d respect someone like Piandao more easily than the 'weak' uncle.
@@mariosblago94 I think he got her a doll because he didn't know what else TO get her. Getting Zuko a knife made sense because Zuko was being treated as less than Azula, and Iroh wanted to help him.
It is because the show handled female characters well. Usually they're either ignored or they have hardcore feminists in the writing room who want to turn them all into invincible, flawless, super heroes who solve all problems on their own. It is very rare to find a female character that is really well done and Avatar pulled it off.
And all in different ways too! Toph is a strong woman in a completely different way to how Katara is strong. And they're not afraid to have them be weak either. Just goes to show the correct way of writing a strong female is to just write a strong character, and there you're done.
@@Conflict-ff5pi couldn't agree more. ATLA did all their characters wonderfully even Jet lmaooo. Idk why anime focus on boys only or why they make the girls only for fan service or give them the "I'm head over heels in love with a bad boy" trope
For me, the part of the series that made me first absolutely love Katara was when the gaang was in the desert after appa was kidnapped. Katara kept them moving. In that moment, she was strong enough to essentially save all of their lives and kept the last shred of hope from dying.
One of my favourite little scenes is on the beach when Sokka is making a sand sculpture of Suki, and it looks absolutely terrible, everyone is laughing at it, and Suki says "I think it's sweet", and Sokka slides up to her and gives her the biggest smooch on the cheek.. This scene is just SO SWEET and casual and just such a good representation of their beautiful healthy loving relationship. Just thinking about this scene is enough to make me smile. I adore these two together. ❤
Right! Weirdly enough, even before the show came to Netflix, I always remembered Sokka as the mastermind who always concocted plans to deal with Team Avatar's problems from WHEN I WAS A KID. And when I rewatched, my love for him was renewed because him not having bending had so much more impact to his badass-ness.
@King Tyrone I agree..but coud it be that redemption is more flamboyant narratively than the slow burn growth of Sokka, both are difficult to write well though.
i have such a love hate relationship with sokka - i hated him at first as i have no patience for misogyny - but he’s just so damn cute i have to love him
Siva Pingali That’s definitely how I see it. Sokka’s journey is more about growing up and becoming confident in himself as a leader, whereas zuko’s journey is about rejecting his family and what he’s been taught in favor of a better way. They’re both finding themselves, but we saw Sokka grow into what he always wanted to be. Zuko had to realize that he doesn’t actually want to be what he always thought he did. One is a lot more apparent than the other.
WAIT. You forgot the most important character. The best one of the show. The most adored and loved character whp struggles through so much hardship and never wins... The Cabbage Man
I love how the show addresses that people dont always get along in a realistic way! So good to see a kids show talk about that! I personally love katara and find myself agreeing with her when toph and sokka roll their eyes. Honestly I would say my opinions on toph and katara are mirrored with yours. Both great characters but I dont have much to say about toph other than shes hilarious. Just goes to show how skilled the writers are!
@Hans Hanzo low-key perfect is a great way to put it. Imo zukos transformation would have been severely crippled if team avatar immediately accepted him. It would seem lazy and kinda cheesy. Katara kept that from happening by being so critical of him, and since they laid a foundation for her mistrust it didnt feel unjustified. Just perfect.
I love Katara, she's an extremely complex character. The writers did an incredible job when they created a sweet and caring girl who hide such a great trauma and also a dark side of her. She's also a female character who doesn't fall in any of the cliché of female characters: she's caring and sweet but she's also temperamental and bossy, she's the maternal figure but she's also passional and intriguing, she's the healer but she's also a bad ass fighter.
Yup. I was surprised when in the 1st season she said she wasn't a Katara fan... Weird. She's one of the most likeable-relatable characters trough out the whole series
@@TheBLBrothers What I love about Katara is how real she is as a character. When her and Zuko go off to find the man that killed her mother, and she can't bring herself to kill the man, I thought they were going to go the standard route of her forgiving him like you would see in other cartoons. But instead, they went in a completely different direction and had her STILL hold onto that grudge and outright say that she will never forgive him and she basically only didn't kill him because she didn't want to stoop to his level.
@@undead890 yeah! This show her great complexity. Katara's reaction in the southern riders episode is totally realistic. She's is not a murderer, but she cannot forgive that piece of shit and this is incredibly well written
Zuko to Iroh: "How could you forgive me so easily?" Me: "Love, Zuko. _True_ love." That reunion scene makes me cry every single time! It is so heartwrenching, sweet, and beautiful. Just think: Ozai disfigured and banished his son merely for speaking out of turn (and in genuine concern for his subjects). Iroh forgave his nephew's betrayal without hesitation. Ozai shot lighting at his son, with intent to kill, because his son dared to follow his own path. Iroh could not even fathom shooting lightning at his nephew, even for training purposes. Ozai may have been Zuko's biological father, but Iroh was always and forever his true father, his dad.
Man, this video completely ignored the main purpose of tier lists: To infuriate people who disagree with you and spark argument in the comments. It's too wholesome and correct.
@@qxraxx ? Momo is ehh tho. I forgot he was in the show until he showed up. I never thought "man. Can't wait for momo to come on screen and do some bit for shits and giggles!"
Iroh is the uncle that we all want. But why have an uncle like that when you can be that uncle. Teach your children, and family, kindness, and love, and dont ever give up. My brother has been through so much in his life, and I have always been there for him. He has never really realized it. And when I am there for him he turn me away, just like zuko did. But there will be a time were my brother will need me, and I won't turn away from him. I will be there for him. Be the person you want to have in your life.
On my most recent watch through, I was very impressed by Aang’s gradual maturity. He’s so goofy, and childish before he visits with Roku, and then after he learns about sozins comet, he becomes a more serious pupil to his becoming the avatar. I love how he starts the show as “I never wanted [to be the avatar]” and ends it with “the avatar is back.” He maintains his goofy personality, which I love, but noticing his devotion to his beliefs, friends and responsibilities really made me appreciate Avatar Aang more on this most recent watch through. Thanks so much for this video, Avatar the Last Airbender is most definitely my favorite series, with some of the most incredible characters - I genuinely loved hearing your opinions on these characters 🙏🏼
There are times mob mentality and mainstream opinion is a bad thing. But this is a family show, and most humans think more or less the same, and your rating reflects somebody who likes being an outcast for the sake of being an outcast.
Because she's so good at earthbending that mostly, it doesn't show that she's blind! Only when they're in the air, or something's thrown at her, or the countless times the Gaang just assume she can *read* !
When you put Iroh in his own tier, I got so frickin happy. His scenes are the ones that make me cry (besides Appa’s Lost Days). When Iroh teaches the one dude how to mug correctly was great, but when he sang about his son made me cry. But what made me cry the most is when Iroh just hugged Zuko and told him that he wasn’t angry, but sad just broke my heart and I cried. Iron’s such an amazing character and you can’t change my mind. I also really love how flippin upset Zuko was over the fact that he felt like he betrayed Iroh. He says it was the biggest mistake of his life. Not failing to catch Aang. Not speaking out of turn when he was with Ozai. Not even when he left Mai by herself. But when he was betraying Iroh
I didn't cry in leaves from vine. I cried at the reunion. Zuko's body movement shows how pathetic he felt, how much self hatred he had for how he treated his uncle. Iroh was afraid that his nephew will judge him for being white lotus and keeping it secret from him, then understood he was not there for judging, he was there to apologize.
I think that we ought rename the Redemption Arc to the Zuko Effect. I had never seen a character make so dramatic a change in their story before ATLA, and I have never seen it since. Zuko is the Prodigal Son come home, what Anakin Skywalker would be if he had had a happy ending. Zuko is the brave soldier boy who came marching home. Also, the fact that there's an Iroh tier above Perfect tier is just... yes.
To be honest Aang is my favourite character. I like that he could still be happy despite losing his people, he was able to keep moving despite his grief. He also was so wise and smart in his own way, but it never felt forced or overdone. Just seeing his growth from running away from his problems, to accepting his role as the avatar was brilliant. Toph, Iroh and Zuko also have my heart, but Aang just has me tearing up whenever I see him. Also his relationship with appa was beautiful. I also think Katara is quite overlooked as a character. She is seen as a mother/killjoy of the group, but without her team Avatar wouldn't have gotten far. She is the glue of the team (as shown in the desert episode). She may not be my favourite but I feel shes overlooked.
Katara is still an amazing character. In any other show she'd probably be my favorite. But this is Avatar, it has characters that take up four spots in my top 10 favorite characters of all time with Iroh, Zuko being the top 2.
That’s what I’m saying I swear whenever I watch an avatar video they always talk about how good iroh and Zuko was as a character. But never talk about aang
@@jack-rz2be Ikr. He has the best personality ever and all anyone cares about is Zuko's looks. Aang is sweet, caring, understanding, optimistic, playful, goofy, smart, strong, brave, powerful, empathetic, trustworthy, and adorable. He is so underrated it hurts. He's my favorite
I LOVE katara but I do feel that her whole grief over her mother thing is a little over played. Like a some points it feels natural but like, I don’t know her telling Saka (I know it’s spelled wrong but I don’t know how to fix it lol) that he didn’t love his mother enough and how much that hurt him kinda bumped her down in my mind
One of my favorite jokes in the show is still the one where they enter the earth kingdom palace in season two and are completly baffled by the fact that the emperor has a regular bear, that bear should be in iroh tier for the simple fact that he's the only normal animal in the entire series, an absolutley unique character
@Mubashir Haroon oh yeah, I think they had normal insects like ants and mosquitos, now that I think about it they seemed to have normal fish and frogs, so maybe only the mamals are fusions
She makes it sound as if Appa and Momo had the same level of importance as Naaga in The Legend of Korra (which was just sad tbh that the Avatar's animal companion was completely put off aside in TLoK)
My top 5: Fire Nation Outcast Iroh, Fire Nation General Dragon of the West Iroh, Earth Kingdom Commoner Iroh, Memorial Iroh that certainly doesn't make me cry every time I see that episode, Imprisoned Iroh, and bonus Grand Lotus Iroh.
honestly, Earth Kingdom commoner Iroh is the best one in my opinion. He and Zuko just want to live a normal life after everything that happened in the Fire Nation. The happiness that Iroh gets when he finds out he can get a tea shop is so cute! And also the Tea Shop was a great place to end the series on.
I think Azula might be my favourite (not including Iroh obviously), simply because of how wonderfully thought out and developed she was. They managed to give her her own story separate from the rest of the characters despite her heavy involvement. The writers thought about her trauma, her childhood, the traits they wanted to give her so carefully that I felt like there was not one thing she did that seemed out of place. Her hatred, rage and pain was brutal to watch. The only time I cried watching this show was in the last episodes with Azula's complete downfall. She is a terrible person but beneath all of her aggression and cruelty she is a very misled and emotionally manipulated little girl. She's only fourteen and yet she has seen and experienced too much in such a specific way that I feel there is no way for her to claw herself back to redemption and that is heartbreaking. A true masterpiece with a character.
@@SirMarshalHaig It was definitely about stupid dominance. Azula is the type of character who wants her orders to be more important than anything else, even things like tides and weather
@Dianne Joy same! I think his arc is a lot more subtle and may need some rewatching to appreciate. But I do understand why people might initially not see his appeal. I think because the show was on Nickalodean, the makers probably couldn't have a hero character process grief and anger openly for a long period of time, like they could with the "villain" (Zuko). I'd have loved more episodes that dealt with him processing his grief from losing his people, and from their loss at Ba Sing Se. But I think the show required a happy / mascot-y face, so all that development had to be hinted and dealt with more subtlety.
Yeah, people are like: ooh he's overrated just because he's the main character/protagonist. But no, he has an amazing arc. He wanted to defeat the firelord and save the world while staying true to the beliefs the monks taught him. i would put him at top or 2nd place of perfect.
His backstory is also very understandable from fearing so much responsibility, which is relatable. All this guilt is built up inside of him, but he doesn’t let that destroy him, rather he focuses on the present and tries to carry out his role. What do you guys think?
For me my list would be: Zuko: Zuko, Iroh Perfect: Aang, Toph, Katara, Sokka Incredible: Azula, Momo, Appa, Roku, Suki, Tai Lee, Mai, Bumi Great: Hakoda, Bato, Long Feng, Ozai, Pipsqueak, The Duke, Jet, Pakku, Piendao, Haru, Teo, Engineer, Jeong Jeong Fine: Zhao
I’ve been obsessed with your channel for a while now, and I’m midway through an Avatar rewatch and got so excited seeing this pop up on my home page!! ☺️ you’re reading my mind!
In retrospect, as I’ve grown older, I find myself agreeing with Katara on a lot of issues. She’s just more responsible and prudent than the others sometimes. Yikes, does being careful mean I’m naggy? 😬
People don't understand that after her mother died, she was left to take on more responsibility because their dad was away also. She was always left to keep everyone together as shown in the desert episode. She had to be serious compared to sokkas goofiness
I love Katara’s nature, she lost her mother and so she took on that role for Sakka even though she was younger. This was carried over to the whole of group avatar and honestly it saved the day many many times.
Sokka became my favorite now that I'm older, he was always the one trying to get the others to continue the journey for the firelord, he had priorities, katara would get distracted with Jet, the village when she became the painted lady, the fortune-teller, I used to like her when I was younger, but now, definitely sokka, I see him as being more mature, and it makes sense, since he's older
Some of my favourite quotes for each character in order of Merphy’s ranking I was never angry with you. I was sad for I believed you had lost your way. Why am I so bad at being good. My first girlfriend turned into the Moon (That’s ruff buddy) Its my turn to have a life changing adventure with Zuko My own mother... thought I was a monster... I’m just one kid... I love Zuko more than I fear you Sokka I can take care of myself. I will never turn my back on people who need me! You’re not prettier than us! (To the Kyoshi warriors 😂) Raaaaaaggh!! Muhmuhmuh!
I'm suprised that of all the quotes you picked that one for tough 😂 why not any of the blind jokes she made for herself? Or most importantly: "Oh sokka you saved me *cheek kiss* " "Actually, it's me Suki" "Oh, well... *you can let me drown now* "
Perfect list. All extremely memorable lines, that I had ironically forgot about. The "I'm just one kid" line gets ne every time. So humble, yet so incredibly powerful. The "why am I so bad at being good" line is also pretty damn good. Bravo
I don't understand why you don't like Katara and only see her as a nagging character. I wish you can see more of her subtleties She's always been a character people talk about the most especially when people talk about : ~ Sexism in writing ~ How to write a good female character without stripping feminine quality ~ How war destroys families ~ Kids forced to mature too early (she was 14, remember) ~ Her response to parental loss by being a parent herself ~ Her personal strength during the desert episode ~ The most relatable person for a lot of person ~ Character with the coolest introduction scene (waterbending, bickering with Sokka, destroying a huge iceberg 10 times her size) ~ Character that is considered a good role model ~ Character with the most significant power growth (she was less talented than Aang but in the end she's the master) ~ The only character, other than Azula, that actually would kill people ~ Don't even get me started on her protective nature There's so many wonderful sides to Katara. But I feel like you only see her as an annoying character, like fake Katara in the Ember Island players episode
So much this. If a tier list of all animated characters was ever made, Katara is the only other Avatar character I'd have in the Top 10 (Zuko and Iroh are obviously the Top 2, by miles). She's unbelievably well developed and so layered. Just a perfect representation of how to write a phenomenal and realistic caring character.
I agree so much with this. Katara was one of the most influential characters for me growing up, and to this day she and Iroh are my top 2 favourite Avatar characters. It made me sad that Merphy focused on her nagging and didn't seem to really give the rest of her as much attention - not to the same level as a lot of other characters, anyway
Don't forget Sokka would've killed too. He literally demonstrates to Aang about defeating the FireLord by slicing his sword through the melon head. If Sokka had the chance in the middle of a fight he would've ended Ozai.
So many people don't understand the character of Katara. I think the writers nailed the female characters. They don't have some angry feminists in the writer's room trying to make a big deal about gender, and similarly they don't have that stupid cliche of boys protecting girls and being the hero like in LITERALLY every show. The writing of Katara and Azula literally could not be more perfect. Katara is a person who suffered so much trauma and had to grow up so fast to protect the people she loved, while Azula is the best villain I have ever seen. They are the two best written female characters in the show. (And the reason I don't mention Toph is because she is disabled. Once again, the writers dont use her blindness as the focus and make a big deal out of it - instead they turn it into her strength, making her one of the most powerful and lovable characters).
Aside from swapping Toph & Zuko, I would have the exact same top 5 down to the tier. And I'll even admit being biased towards Toph - I watched the show roughly at the same time I learned I have a disease that might make me go blind in the future, so seeing her being a total boss despite her blindness did wonders for my morale.
I hope it doesn’t turn out you lose your site, I can’t imagine how scary that can be but I’m happy you can find something like Toph to have a postive mindset.
Having "Iroh" as a tier, and stating that he is the best character ever created...these are objectively correct.

Not to mention the Insane amount of responsibility (saving the world) on a 12 years old kid.
I loved how aang’s arc was him keeping his morals and beliefs in a world that wanted to squander it, and I loved that message
Great example of a flat character arc . The unwilling to bend or change his morals even though the world tries so hard to
Unpopular opinion: Aang is my favorite character.

Personally, I didn't understand when Katara tried to find and kill the man who killed her mom and she acted like Aang wouldn't understand when his entire race was wiped out leaving him no living parents, grandparents, or siblings
hahaha

Considering they're the 2 best characters in any animated media, makes sense.
Like uncle like nephew...
@@AmandaTHT he literally quoted Iroh in the letter for next avatar after Korra.
OMG finally someone who actually liked katara, she is my fave 🤗 and everyone just makes memes like:
Someone: breathes
Katara: my mother used to breathe
But it's not like that she does not even talk about her a lot and katara went through a lot of change and she learned to have some fun like in the episode "the runaway" and she is really good at waterbending and imagine your mother died and your older brother said you were basically his mother, katara was used to being a mom to sokka and that's why she is the "mom" of team avatar and people call her annoying, but she was living with all this guilt and frustration after her mom died and she was in the tent and at first blaming herself but then she focused all the blame on that one dude and never letting it out and just trying to be kind and pulling everyone together but toph made her snap and sometimes she just get ticked off and let her emotions out but then pulls everything back in and being kind again and in the beginning, she was depending on aang a lot to do mostly everything but later (end of season 2/ season 3) she learned not to depend on him so much, she was already powerful by herself. Sorry for ranting :/
@@a_karch Why are females characters, especially good ones like Katara, so easily hated?
@@drfifteenmd7561 probably because she’s a Mary Sue and can be very annoying
Maybe that will add it into the live action show.. theyve already said they will be expanding the world and develepment...
I didn't know that piece of trivia until I read your comment, and...yeah, it does nothing for me. They did good leaving that out.
I... it actually takes it back for me a little bit. Don’t know why but that bugs me. A lot
Azula’s mental break is in part due to not having an “Iroh-figure” in her life. Iroh loved Zuko, he was his mentor, but from their childhood he sort of ignored Azula (giving her a doll “because she’s a girl” for example, when Azula’s upbringing and ambitions go beyond that)
I also love Iroh, and what I wrote just makes him more human. He’s not perfect and that’s great.
César Oróstegui yeah, and also there is only so much you can do, he messed up already
To be fair Azula was very unlikable even as a child

I just realized how many strong female characters there are in avatar
Avatar succeeds in that category when a lot of anime fail female character development AHEM literally any girl from Naruto
It is because the show handled female characters well.
Usually they're either ignored or they have hardcore feminists in the writing room who want to turn them all into invincible, flawless, super heroes who solve all problems on their own. It is very rare to find a female character that is really well done and Avatar pulled it off.

Sokka’s depth as a a character and his arc are SOOO underrated.
I loved sokkas arc as well, he was definitely my favorite character other than zuko

Disliking Iroh should be illegal.
True. Imagine creating a character that is LITERALLY universally beloved.
Iroh is a grandpa/uncle we all WISH we had.
I don't. Lol. You're welcome for this rare experience..
@@umniya3076 How dare
Zuko to Iroh: "How could you forgive me so easily?"
Me: "Love, Zuko. _True_ love."
That reunion scene makes me cry every single time! It is so heartwrenching, sweet, and beautiful.
Just think:
Ozai disfigured and banished his son merely for speaking out of turn (and in genuine concern for his subjects).

That’s amazing! You sound like a wonderful person.

BAHHAHAHAHA
Honestly, Iroh is like dogs, I don’t think we deserve him, but yet there he was just being wholesome incarnate.

@@jgig1329 we all are
When you put Iroh in his own tier, I got so frickin happy.
Thank you.
Also, the fact that there's an Iroh tier above Perfect tier is just... yes.
These days when a new show comes out people try to guess who’s getting “the Zuko arc.”
Yesss finally some appreciation for Aang.
"no, just bear"......*visible confusion
@Mubashir Haroon oh yeah, I think they had normal insects like ants and mosquitos, now that I think about it they seemed to have normal fish and frogs, so maybe only the mamals are fusions
*silence*
...This place is weird.
Theres also the fact that they didn't know what the foxes were when they went to the library
😂😂😂 yeah i love that
She makes it sound as if Appa and Momo had the same level of importance as Naaga in The Legend of Korra (which was just sad tbh that the Avatar's animal companion was completely put off aside in TLoK)
Tru, sad part is naaga could’ve turned out great as a companion, if only lok wasn’t such a let down with tht.
Naga is literally only used as a transportation system in tlok

honestly, Earth Kingdom commoner Iroh is the best one in my opinion. He and Zuko just want to live a normal life after everything that happened in the Fire Nation. The happiness that Iroh gets when he finds out he can get a tea shop is so cute! And also the Tea Shop was a great place to end the series on.
Tea shop Iroh is UNDERRATED

Not that I disagree though
Apparently Zuko was added in very late. He wasn’t originally a part of the story. Which makes how his story was made and written even more incredible
Yeah, he was one the last characters to be added because they realized that Ozai wouldn't personally go to fight all the time
“Let’s talk about [character]. I love them.” Sounds about right. 💕
“DO THE TIDES COMMAND THIS SHIP?”
-instantly my favorite character
I´m still not sure, if Azula just risked her ship over a stupid dominance game, or if there was really something wrong about her captain´s statement.
Seeing how azula always wanted her word to be the last, I wouldn't be surprised if it was just stupid dominance
@@SirMarshalHaig It was definitely about stupid dominance.
Azula is the type of character who wants her orders to be more important than anything else, even things like tides and weather
I just realized that Iroh invented lighting redirection like how he redirected Zuko’s path in life
Completely agreed on Iroh. Best character in anything ever.
I'm sorry Aang on the same tier as Mai? Everyone always asleep on on Aangs arc.
I think it is mainly because of his actions in the great divide episode and the one where he tries to stop sokka and katara from seeing their father
Yeah, people are like: ooh he's overrated just because he's the main character/protagonist. But no, he has an amazing arc. He wanted to defeat the firelord and save the world while staying true to the beliefs the monks taught him. i would put him at top or 2nd place of perfect.
OK I KNOW HES THE MAIN CHARACTER BRUH AANG IS UNDERRATEDDDDDDDDD
For me my list would be:
Zuko: Zuko, Iroh
Perfect: Aang, Toph, Katara, Sokka
Incredible: Azula, Momo, Appa, Roku, Suki, Tai Lee, Mai, Bumi
Great: Hakoda, Bato, Long Feng, Ozai, Pipsqueak, The Duke, Jet, Pakku, Piendao, Haru, Teo, Engineer, Jeong Jeong
Fine: Zhao

In retrospect, as I’ve grown older, I find myself agreeing with Katara on a lot of issues. She’s just more responsible and prudent than the others sometimes. Yikes, does being careful mean I’m naggy? 😬
I don’t get how telling people to literally stop breaking the law is naggy :/
Chanel Wafuana Right? She never seems naggy to me, just more like an adult than the others.
Momo deserves better. When Appa gets lost during book two Momo takes it really hard. He doesn't speak, but we can still feel his sadness.

I don't understand why you don't like Katara and only see her as a nagging character. I wish you can see more of her subtleties
She's always been a character people talk about the most especially when people talk about :
~ Sexism in writing
~ How to write a good female character without stripping feminine quality
~ How war destroys families
~ Kids forced to mature too early (she was 14, remember)
~ Her response to parental loss by being a parent herself
~ Her personal strength during the desert episode
~ The most relatable person for a lot of person
~ Character with the coolest introduction scene (waterbending, bickering with Sokka, destroying a huge iceberg 10 times her size)
~ Character that is considered a good role model
~ Character with the most significant power growth (she was less talented than Aang but in the end she's the master)
~ The only character, other than Azula, that actually would kill people
~ Don't even get me started on her protective nature
There's so many wonderful sides to Katara.
Guys... she loves Katara...
A character: *exits*
Her: I LoVe tHeM
Aside from swapping Toph & Zuko, I would have the exact same top 5 down to the tier.
