Memory Lane for me, brother. In the 1970’s I lived on 12th St. between A and B. Loved the borscht at Besenka Vezelka and at Odessa Restaurant. In those days I never actually went into Tompkins Square Park - too dangerous. I was brave, but not crazy.
making me laugh more than any other youtuber and teaching me history about the city I’ve lived in for more than a decade. Plus an incredibly intelligent insight into gentrification. Would absolutely watch the 3 hour version!
McSorley's Ale House I use to frequent the place back in the 70s & '80s when I lived on 92nd St between Central Park West and Columbus Ave. Beer with a plate of cheese and onions was the standard fare. Women were not allowed until the 1970s. When women were allowed the establishment welcomed them by putting a sign on the Bathroom door that read Coed Bathroom. I've always wondered what the women thought of the row of urinals they had in the men's/coed room when you first walked in after it turned Coed. Just for context Phil I remember, when I Heart/Love New York first came out in 1977.
My friend Tom! ...You are the best ! ...Did the CEO of Discovery channel called you?! I told that dude to get you in before other networks pick you up! 😀 ....you should send a compilation of all your videos and propose a tv show hermano! You have raw talent and knowledge to fill many books! ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽

Tom, right on with your comments about gentrification. Who knows, if the rents go down enough, it might attract artists back to NY and off we go again to a vital city once more.
.... the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle-class taste. "an area undergoing rapid gentrification" the process of making a person or activity more refined or polite. "soccer has undergone gentrification"

The narrow building at 12:18-which used to be free-standing-was a stable in the 19th century; I knew the woman who ran a jewelry store out of the storefront in the 1990s, and she said when she moved in, it had a dirt floor.
A little late to the party here. Loved this so much. I spent 3 weeks in East Village back in the 90's and this brought back so many great memories and reflections. Damn, you're good at what you do!
I lived on St. Marks and Ave A from 1998 to 2008. Especially the Garage Rock(Hipster) explosion and Howl Festivals in the early 00's. It was an amazing time to live there. Glad to see Mosaic Man is still kickin'. RIP Jimmy from Trash and Vaudeville. E.V./L.E.S. forever 🤘
Great narration. But as a New Yorker I am disturbed by the lens that videographer Phil is using. The depth makes the 'hood look like LA. Big thanks, in any case. So great that you gave Jim Powers that plug.

Hi Tom! Appreciate your video of East Village. I was born and raised there. Lived on 3rd St. between Ave. C&D and Ave. A and 1st. I cracked up when you said that if you went to Ave. D you were dead. I also lived on Orchard St. Really enjoyed your videos. I left NY when I was 14 never been back. The city has changed so much. Honestly learned more of the city from you than when I lived there. Then again I was very young. Regards from Puerto Rico. Keep the videos coming!!
Great tour as always Tom. Love this area of NYC, it is losing it's style as you rightfully pointed out, but the spirit is still there. Have you heard of Nelson Sullivan? He was essentially vlogging from 1983 until 1989, all through NYC but primarily in the East Village. His estate posted hundreds of hours of 80's NYC on UA-cam, a rabbit hole worth going down. Great footage of the eccentric side of NYC that seems to be fading. You're getting an extra tip in person when I take your tour for name dropping Brian Eno. (now I'm on an Eno kick, listening to Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy) .
Yes! So cool - actually the UA-camr Actionkid told me about him and I just recently checked him out. His stuff is surreal because no one else was really doing what he did!
Grew up going to punk rock shows in the LES back when Coney and CBGBs were a thing but man, I never thought I'd see the day The Continental was gone from that corner.

Mentioning artists, where they live, work, etc. It's interesting or a shame how some people who are doing similar stuff have so much more views or subscribers, you are beating their asses, lol. Thank you for introducing Jim the artist. I am an artist as well, he's got some really good material over there. Keep up the good work. I will keep on watching your videos and enjoying! Cheers!
