I was at the Trop for the Rays/Reds game August 28th for the first time. I was sitting behind home and didn't notice the patchwork on the roof, but looking over my photos I did catch a glimpse of it when walking around the outfield. Judging by the other photos in this video it appears the "patchwork" was completed on the 29th or the 30th.
It's a double layered roof. The interior sheet (the one that appears compromised pre-Hurricane which you are highlighting) is only there to shade the outer layer since it's plain white. Not ideal for baseball.
I'm a long time resident from this area(Tampa, then Bradenton) I've been to many games at The Trop. My best guess is this is the end of The Trop and that the Rays will probably use Steinbrenner Field in the interim as it is right across the street from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stadium and it even has better parking than the cheapo Bucs provide(grass field for the Bucs, modern concrete for Steinbrenner Field). I would say the chance of the Rays ever playing again at The Trop is less than 5%.
I honestly don’t know these venues, but would moving to the Bucs stadium be a possibility? It’s certainly not unheard of for a MLB team to share an NFL venue, and there’s plenty of seating.
Steinbrenner won't work. The Tarpons play a whole season there and a division rival is NOT going to disrupt their farm team to help a rival. The difference between the A's playing in a minor league park and the Rays, now, is that the A's have been planning this since April. Even the Rays AAA team in Durham said no thanks to hosting the Rays because of the scheduling conflicts. The Rays will either end up at Disney or they'll be playing 2025 outside of the State of Florida.
@@scottNNJ Raymond James Stadium won't work because of the dimensions. It was built solely for football and doesn't have the temporary seating that can be folded up like they had in Miami with Joe Robbie Stadium.
There was definitely nothing open to the outside. No water was getting into the stadium. We went to a game in August in horrible rainstorm. When we got there the parking lot was flooded. I had to wade in 8 inches of water right outside to get in. We had a lot of street flooding in our area. If there was any leak, that field would have been flooded that night. We were also at a game earlier in the year where there was a big rainstorm during the game. It does look a little odd in the photos, but I can assure you no water was entering the building.
I went to a Rays game last August for the first time & I also noticed a few of those tears in the roof (that was pointed out) as well. Talk about negligence on the Rays part.
When you said the roof had a projected life span of 25 years, im sure that came from the manufacturer of the roof in writting, so the insurance company id assume has no obligation to pay and most likely wasn't even insured for total replacement, just maybe some small repairs from hail etc...
After the hurricane in 2017 they had to do some repairs to the roof of the Trop. There were some small openings on the roof that they had repaired by the next season. Was never built to survive the high winds we saw with Milton.
There have been openings in the roof for years by design I believe. Years ago I was there during a bad storm during a game, and birds took refuge by climbing down through those holes into the Trop. It was weird to see outside birds flying around inside of a Dome.
If I were a betting man, the Rays end up in Orlando. The MLB/MiLB do NOT want to sort out the headache of rearranging pre-set schedules. The Ballpark at Disney doesn't have a permanent tenant and is pretty close to MLB-ready. Plus MLB has an opportunity to capture the younger audience by moving (at least temporarily) to where families are at Disney, and I don't see them (or Disney who would LOVE another summer-long income stream) passing up that opportunity. For what it's worth, the argument of "Florida weather": the thunderstorms in Orlando usually fall between 3-5 p.m. when it pours for 20 minutes then is done. Also. At this point, it may be easier for people from Tampa proper to navigate I-4 traffic and get to Orlando than it is for them to make the jump across the bay bridge to St. Pete. 😅😂
The one thing that I haven’t seen asked is whether this could be the beginning of the end of the Rays in Tampa Bay. I realize that the new stadium deal was about 95% done, but if the money for recovery efforts are prioritized over a stadium, this could seriously jeopardize whether the team stays long-term. If the Trop is scrapped and this happens, the Rays are basically free agents.
Yeah as someone who works in insurance, if they see wear and tear and the lifespan is exceeded, then this is all things the rays should have handled long before as their building maintenance
It may look like a tear or hole but apparently it wasn't. If it was opened to the outside people would have been aware of water coming in. Now those spots could have been thin and the first places that failed during the hurricane.
Predict a lot of back and forth involving lawyers. If insurance for stadiums works anything like insurance for homes, this might drag out for months or years.
Hey Brodie I love your videos. one thing they could do is build a temporary stadium like the ones at the cricket world cup. the rays already have attendance issues so the could build one of the smaller ones like the one In Dallas. a co worker that invited me to that match said they are very cheap to build and maintain and there is even an option for Suites and Luxury seatings. Just wanted to know what you thought about that Edit or something like Northwestern's temp stadium Edit 2 this is more of a last ditch effort. Like if all else fails or falls through
@@ronclark9724 it was an option. They have a bunch of stadiums in the area. My idea was more of a last resort. Like if the Yankees said no or the bucs said no. Or for some reason they want to stay in Tampa. But more than likely that’s the route they are going.
Brodie, just my opinion. With the damage so bad to Tropicana Field and with Future Hurricanes Inevitable and getting stronger, wouldn't it just be a better idea to scrap the idea of a new Stadium next door and make the team relocate away from Florida right now? Being they are an AL East team, maybe to Raleigh/Durham, NC or maybe Nashville? I'd like to see your answer in an upcoming video.
I don't know if you've talked about it before or not, but I'm wondering if insurance will pay for anything inside the stadium -- or the roof. If we were talking about a roof on a house, I don't think the homeowners would have gotten a dime for roof damage if the roof was well beyond the life it was rated for. Insurance isn't a roof replacement service. The dome (fabric) was likely fully depreciated and insurance would owe nothing. The question then be about the contents of the stadium. Do they have flood insurance? If not, insurance may not pay for anything inside the stadium. This is going on how a homeowner would be treated. If the roof is compromised and water gets in, the insurance company would call it flood damage. I see the possibility here that the Rays get left with a huge bill for stadium repairs.
I am a contractor although I don’t do roofs. Actually in Minnesota insurance has become a roof replacement service. Insurance companies need to start looking at the lifespan of a shingle and pay a prorated amount for this reason. I had a client get an $80,000 payout on what I consider to be a modest house and another one, $200,000. The ladder also involved hail damage to windows.
Probably going to play a bunch of road games. I think in 1994 or something, the mariners played a good chunk of their home games at the opponents home stadium because the Kingdome roof was getting repaired.
Luckily for the Ms, it was at what turned out to be near the end of the season due to the MLB strike of 1994. Sady for the seahawks they had to play the first few home games at Huskee stadium. That Kingdome roof incident accelerated the end of the Kingdome
@@Matthew6248 yes that’s right. But at least the Seahawks had a stadium in Seattle to play in. The Rays will hopefully play at the Yankees spring training stadium in Tampa.
Something I've haven't heard about what the Rays might do until the roof is replaced at the the Trop (if it ever is): If Tampa Bay has to go elsewhere to play next season (and/or the next three seasons until the new Trop is built), why not play in San Antonio? The Alamodome has been used for a few Texas Rangers spring training games over the last few years, and isn't all that much worse than the Trop. It would be a test for if San Antonio could support a MLB expansion team in the long term in a ballpark of major league size (unlike Sacramento, Nashville, Charlotte, Buffalo or even Salt Lake City). And as far as I am aware, the roof is not under repair as is the case in Montreal. Something to think about.
I was just thinking about this the other day, and i think your are right, it was probably already compromised. Didnt it just withstand a Hurricane that hit tampa worse a fewyears ago?
@@Tampafan33 The average attendance for the Oakland Athletics in 2024 was 11,528, and the Rays was 16, 515. That's only a 31% increase. The Ray's were ranked 28th in attendance in 2024, the A's were 30th. So yah, Let's GO Oakland RAYS!

that lack of care for Tropicana Field is not a good look on the owner. Will he even care to maintain the next stadium? These are valid red flags, you want to commit to someone that chooses to ignore maintenance?
I do feel bad for the Rays and their fans, however, as a Jays fan, I watched every game that they played. I always hated the Jays games there, yes, their record was bad there, but it was always the worst venue in my humble opinion. The number of balls that were missed because of the roof's colour, and the lines were not good for broadcasting games.
Oakland would work, but San Antonio is closer and the Alamodome HAS hosted MLB before. I wonder how long it would take to put the Ballpark in Arlington back into a baseball configuration?
I went to the Trop and walked around it (outside) and it looks a lot worst in person then any pictures or videos. The walls around the trop outside is all damage it’s not just the roof
If, weirdly, the Rays play in Oakland/Utah, besides the temporary move, would putting the Rays temporarily in the West division be next(move one of the teams in Texas, temporarily, to the Eastern division, it'll take some sort of money changing hands)? Crazier things have happened...
Rays make it clear they not going move team to Oakland or Utah when Stadium done fixed roof. they have to look at ballpark site where they play at near Tampa or someplace else in Central Florida.
MLB won't realign any divisions right now even temporarily, wouldn't work esp since the schedules for next season are already out. The most obvious choice right now is Steinbrenner Field but thats going to require some dealing with the Yankees, there is just no other MLB ready venues available. Yeah theres the Oakland Coliseum which would be a bit ironic esp when the Rays host the A's lol but due to scheduling and travel times that would be nothing short of a logistical nightmare tho perhaps a necessary one at this point. Who knows maybe baseball isn't quite done in Oakland just yet.
@@joecostantino3684 also, Oakland Roots and Soul are playing home games at the Coliseum in 2025, but I know of a scheduling solution that could help with the temporary realignment: a 3 way schedule swap: Guardians with the temporary move to AL east gets the rays sched, Astros moving to AL Central gets the Guardians sched and the rays gets the Astros sched. One more thing: once upon a time, the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati reds based on the eastern half of the US played in the NL West
If it was already damaged and they hadn't repaired it before the storm, they aren't getting a penny from insurance. And that probably guarantees they've played their last game there
Lets all face reality, it was bad luck for this stadium to be named Tropicana Field because on the same day of the roof getting damaged by Hurricane Milton, The Topicana in Vegas got imploded!
You can see how the fabric was layed. Looks like you can see the seems of the roll of the fabric to running around the steel. Not sure if it was sealed before being layed down on the steel. You can definitely see the way the fabric was layed out. That goes the opposite way from what your showing that light seam. Stu Sternberg isn't billionaire owner. His net worth on Forbes is listed as $800M. The Trop is probably a dead stadium. There has been talk of the Rays using Wild World of Sports at Disneyworld. The stadium is the Braves spring home. It has 7,500 seats and lawn space for 2,000. The issue there is it take the team 90 miles from Tropicana field and an hour and half from it's target fanbase! Steinbrenner Field or Legends field where the Yankee's train across from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay is also used as a minor league park for the Tampa Tarpons of the Florida state league. That stadium holds 11,026 and would still be close to all the Ray's fans. Looking at that stadium, there is room to put in extra seats. Right now the Rays capacity at Tropicana field is listed at 25,025 fans. I think about 3,000 seats could be added to GSF in Tampa to get capacity up to 14,000.
Although with just a capacity of 10,200, Truist Field in Charlotte , NC could be a Future MLB test balloon site. Olympic Stadium might be better if it was ready.
How about this far fetched idea, but might work for 3 years, for the 2025 season let all the teams play as they have the schedule set, but for the 2026 season, merge the Rays merge with the Marlins and the A's merge with the Angels, while these new stadiums are in development. In the NHL back in the late 1970's or in the 1990's there was a team in Cleveland called the Barons, they relocated as they were once the California Golden Seals, this team didn't last long and merged with the Minnesota North Stars, when the NHL started their expansion process in the earlier 90's they want to get back to the Bay area, and whatever way the ownership was setup in Minnesota some of the North Star players were transferred to the Sharks (according to Wikipedia). I do remember that to be somewhat accurate, i was about 12 at the time. The Rays and A's can keep their farm systems as is during this time and the teams can call up players from any development level as needed. And once both stadiums are built the teams and players become employees of the team again. (was going to say property, but don't like that term 😀). I know this will not happen as it can be complex and the PU won't allow it, since the A's are set up in Sacramento, I think the best option is for the Rays maybe to see if they can use Steinbrenner field or go to Disney and play at WWoS field, the Blue Jays played a year and a half in minor league stadiums, so these two teams should be able to do this with new stadiums being a real thing if there is no new stadiums there is going to be a bigger issue.
It definitely appears that this stadium is done because the benefit to repair it isn't worth the cost. I wouldn't be surprised if they play in a temporary place like Oakland or Utah. If they want to play in a place that is MLB ready for the least cost, I think Oakland might be their best bet. If so, do the A's play them as a "visiting team"? So many what ifs. Regardless, the plot twist is going to be very interesting. Lastly, just to put it on record, sell the team Fisher.
There will have to be some things done first: work out any scheduling conflicts with Oakland Roots/soul soccer. Temp. Divisional realignment (Rays play schedule meant for Astros while Astros plays sched meant for Guardians and Guardians play the schedule meant for Rays)
More likely to play in Omaha, Buffalo, or San Juan, even the New Orleans superdome. At least for the next 3 years while their new stadium is built. 2026 and 2027 will be more thought out because they can make the schedule in advance. 2025 they may be bouncing between multiple home stadiums, Florida spring training stadiums in the spring and fall, and unoccupied larger stadiums in the eastern US in the summer. They would find a temporary stadium for the whole season for 2026 and 2027, and then if things go to plan their new stadium in the gas plant district would be ready for 2028

The Astrodome is essentially abandoned at this point, it's not structurely sound, MLB would never allow it not to mention Harris County. It's just waiting for Houston to figure out whether or not it should be torn down or not.
@thomasjcox Harris County (where Houston is located) took away its certificate of occupancy in '08. Minor renovations have taken away outside ramps and other things. I don't think the Astrodome is an option here. Recent renovations to the Superdome have locked in the football configuration (so they can't switch to baseball). While the Alamodome is interesting, I think they have plenty of options in Florida.
@wmw3629 They can and they could. They played outdoors in Miami Gardens for 20 years. A new stadium with climate comforts has not improved attendance down there. And it's more convenient for the players and team so they don't have to run their operations out of a hotel room 1000 miles away. And it's better for multiple AL East teams; playing in San Antonio is farther away than most of the teams in the AL Central and the Texas teams...

MLBs worst stadium, by far... And has been since it opened. Hard to imagine TB fans feel any loss. Likely, as my friends in TB have said to me, the hurricane did them a favor and took this stadium that has been on life support since day one, out of its misery.
Steinbrenner Field would work until June when the rainy season starts.
I honestly don’t know these venues, but would moving to the Bucs stadium be a possibility? It’s certainly not unheard of for a MLB team to share an NFL venue, and there’s plenty of seating.
@@scottNNJ Bucs stadium is outdoors too.
I just went back to look back (at my pics) during the August 9th game versus the Orioles and there are tears in the roof!!!!
When you said the roof had a projected life span of 25 years, im sure that came from the manufacturer of the roof in writting, so the insurance company id assume has no obligation to pay and most likely wasn't even insured for total replacement, just maybe some small repairs from hail etc...
I was there in May for rays vs Yankees and remember seeing what I thought were holes.
After the hurricane in 2017 they had to do some repairs to the roof of the Trop. There were some small openings on the roof that they had repaired by the next season. Was never built to survive the high winds we saw with Milton.
I thought I was the only one who remember this
There have been openings in the roof for years by design I believe. Years ago I was there during a bad storm during a game, and birds took refuge by climbing down through those holes into the Trop. It was weird to see outside birds flying around inside of a Dome.
Interesting! Wonder how they got in but rain didn’t.
Pete. 😅😂
would be wild if they end up using the oakland colesium until their new stadium is built
Likely not due to scheduling nightmares. Rays are an AL East team NOT an AL West team!!!!
@@larrystaley21doesn’t matter what AL league they are playing in, don’t have a proper game venue to host games for them genius!

Now those spots could have been thin and the first places that failed during the hurricane.
correct, I can't say exactly what I'm seeing -- but I know it looks suspect
This is obviously worse than the Metrodome Roof Collapse!
Looks like there may be some excuses (as if any were needed) for the insurance company to deny the claim.
exactly
The New Orleans done has a baseball configuration right? They could get crowds there and still be in the same region. Somewhat.
Predict a lot of back and forth involving lawyers. If insurance for stadiums works anything like insurance for homes, this might drag out for months or years.
Thank the Lord ! It happen now, instead of game time. Many lives , have been saved. AMEN !
Just wanted to know what you thought about that
Edit or something like Northwestern's temp stadium
Edit 2 this is more of a last ditch effort.
There were gusts to 120-130 mph.
That roof looks like those paper globe lamps that you can buy at Ikea for $7.00
I don't know if you've talked about it before or not, but I'm wondering if insurance will pay for anything inside the stadium -- or the roof.
Something I've haven't heard about what the Rays might do until the roof is replaced at the the Trop (if it ever is):
If Tampa Bay has to go elsewhere to play next season (and/or the next three seasons until the new Trop is built), why not play in San Antonio? The Alamodome has been used for a few Texas Rangers spring training games over the last few years, and isn't all that much worse than the Trop. It would be a test for if San Antonio could support a MLB expansion team in the long term in a ballpark of major league size (unlike Sacramento, Nashville, Charlotte, Buffalo or even Salt Lake City). And as far as I am aware, the roof is not under repair as is the case in Montreal. Something to think about.
Insurance won't pay as the roof is 34 years old with a 25 year life expectancy. My guess is that Yankees or blue Jay's (Dunedin) will be the new home.
I was just thinking about this the other day, and i think your are right, it was probably already compromised. Didnt it just withstand a Hurricane that hit tampa worse a fewyears ago?
The Oakland Rays has a nice ring to it. LOL
That would never happen. The Oakland attendance was like 1/10 of the rays lol

As hard as it is to have affordable Home Owners Insurance in CA. gotta be damm near impossible in Florida.
Sounds like the owner is cheap and cuts corners. Insurance shouldn’t pay a dime. The fans deserve better, sell the team. Tired of cheap owners.
Its gonna be on one of those abandoned UA-cam channels soon enough.
The Insurance company may try to get out paying now.
Don’t they always?
I do feel bad for the Rays and their fans, however, as a Jays fan, I watched every game that they played. I always hated the Jays games there, yes, their record was bad there, but it was always the worst venue in my humble opinion. The number of balls that were missed because of the roof's colour, and the lines were not good for broadcasting games.
Luis De Los Santos and Jose Caballero are now unexpected trivia answers....
Oakland would work, but San Antonio is closer and the Alamodome HAS hosted MLB before. I wonder how long it would take to put the Ballpark in Arlington back into a baseball configuration?
Just play in the Yankee spring training facility in Tampa.

Then again the Dallas Cowboys play in the NFC East
We're Rays fans, adversity and doubt it what we're used to this is just an off-field versions
If it was already damaged and they hadn't repaired it before the storm, they aren't getting a penny from insurance. And that probably guarantees they've played their last game there
It looks like the Pontiac Silverdome
Yeaaaa if I was a betting person I would give a 90 percent chance insurance isn’t gonna pay a dime if the roof was that expired
Gotta tear it down anyway, might as well remove the roof entirely. Add drainage. Attach the lights and speakers to the outer concrete ring. Play ball
That would cost a fortune!
So did this roof leak at all during the season?
No, the roof did not leak. I was there during 2 very bad rainstorms. There was never any water coming onto the field
Lets all face reality, it was bad luck for this stadium to be named Tropicana Field because on the same day of the roof getting damaged by Hurricane Milton, The Topicana in Vegas got imploded!
Yes, It did sustain damage. After seeing the images, I confirmed it did sustain it
I went to Tropicana Field in 2017 and there were some holes in the roof
Insurance won't pay for a roof that was 14 years beyond it's intended life.
Couldn't they just put up a golf dome style of structure over something like Steinbrenner field. It's a temporary home, so why not?
Blistering heat and constant rain during the Summer!
I’m glad you are covering this. Go Oakland Rays

Time to give the Oakland Coliseum some love
Lastly, just to put it on record, sell the team Fisher.
i think it's really hard for them to exit the eastern time zone, for the sake of travel and their opponents
The Rays are planning on staying in St. Pete with a new stadium. I doubt they'll leave Florida.
