You don't get rich by spending your money. You get rich by spending OTHER people's money. In this case, tax payers dollars. The people of the city of Reno and county of Washoe, should NOT pay a single cent towards this project. The city needs more affordable housing, not luxury suites and hotel rooms.
There is clearly a difference between generating revenue by people choosing your product (and you getting wealthy off that) and getting taxpayer dollars which was not the choice of the taxpayer. Also that first sentence is contradicted by the fact that Stan Kroenke and Bill Foley exist who didn't take any taxpayer dollars to fund their respective buildings.

I’m a native Nevadan and a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno. The MGM Grand (now GSR) opened in 1978, with construction starting in 75-76, on the site of a former quarry. So, you basically have a 50 year old building at the GSR site. The area they’re building on to has been remodeled / expanded a couple of times, but the bones of the place are still old. In fact, there are still hidden MGM lion icons at the building, at least as of a couple of years ago. Lawlor is 41 years old, opened in 1983 (same year I was born). UNR doesn’t have the money for a new arena, let alone a major remodel of Lawlor. Lawlor doesn’t have the acoustics or infrastructure to handle major concerts anymore absent a significant renovation. I’m really not sure what the better option is at this point - get Lawlor renovated, or build at the GSR.
@@zacplayshockey1 - at one point, the Reno Events Center had a G League basketball team, I have no idea why they didn’t build it big enough to handle UNR basketball.
@@bryceleinan I think that had to do with the Reno Events Center being made for concerts and not sports I do not think the city ever wanted it to be more than a concert venue
"The project is expected to drive significant economic benefits........". Every single project like this is "expected to drive significant economic benefits", the problem is, they rarely actually do.
Great story Brodie! Currently live in the Reno / Sparks area and worked for the Phoenix Coyotes / Glendale Arena back when it opened in 2003. I also met Alex when I had business at the GSR. While I don’t think he handled the Coyotes situation very well, what he has done with the GSR on totally redoing it amazing and one of the top resorts in the Reno area. It rivals many along the Vegas strip. I am surprised that I heard about the TIF since UNR president Sandavall did say no public money. I am hopeful this project will go through for everyone’s sake but cautious because of the loss of the Coyotes. Yes, he owns the Roadrunners and with the timeline of the Reno Arena and the lease of the Roadrunners at TCC (Tucson Convention Center ) ending at the same time (the TCC is not a hockey building at all) I’m not surprised that could happen. But I’m with you. The new South Lake Tahoe team in the brand new Tahoe Blue center is about an hour away and I believe they might be in the same league. With 2 new buildings and teams, I’m not sure if the area is ready, much less survive with 2 teams. This is a very fluid situation and excited to see what will happen. Oh, Reno is 2 hours from Sacramento and 4 to 5 hours (depending on traffic) from the Vay area. We get a ton of weekend visitors from those 2 places alone and the Reno / Sparks area has grow a lot in the last 10 years from those 2 places. It also helps when you have the Tesla affect about 40 min from GSR where many people are employed there (Reno Tahoe industrial center). And GSR is about 5 min from an expanding Reno Tahoe International Airport (yes more airport construction like everywhere else lol). So a lot of plus, but I know why (as well as I) can be Leary thanks to the Yotes demise. Crossing fingers this will go ok.
With a new ECHL team starting in Lake Tahoe as of tomorrow, will it be viable to have a AHL team in the same general area? I would not trust Mereulo after he screwed the Coyotes out of Arizona
They would more than likely cannibalize each other. Many of the fans that will be in Stateline, NV as I will be on Thursday are from down in the Valley (Reno, Carson, Minden/Garnderville). I do not believe these teams would be able to exist at the sametime, along with the Sr. A - Ice Raiders that get over 600 every game.
In an ideal world Reno and Tahoe would both have ECHL teams with neither playing home games on the same nights and both selling out each others venues when they play. Their would also be teams in Sacramento and Stockton and San Francisco but reality is whole different beast. Their are already plenty of teams that are that close. It would come down to if Tahoe could support itself without the Reno market. I think having teams close by is a good thing as it allows fans to travel brining in more revenue through ticket sales. In the west there needs to be more teams within two hours of each other. Five or more hours between teams is unreasonable. If there was an ECHL team in Sacramento, both Tahoe and Sacramento could count on a 200-500 away fans. With the way the ECHL schedule is Reno would play Tahoe twelve times. That would almost guarantee six sellouts for both teams which is a lot in the ECHL.
That would be cool to see my Ontario Reign play some games in Reno. Reno has some great micro breweries and having a AHL team up there would make it even better
Growing up in Bakersfield I was crushed that there was no hockey in Reno but I would love an AHL team to see the Condors or Reign up here and to travel to all of the west coast teams for games. When we had Reno 1868 FC us fans used to travel all over the west.
@@zacplayshockey1 I was a Sac Republic season ticket holder until 2020 and Reno 1868 would always come with a lot of traveling supports. I miss them in the league it took away an excuse to head to beautiful Reno when they left. I hope Reno gets a soccer team back
People in Reno are still upset that the Raiders Las Vegas stadium was built partially with their tax dollars. I don't know about Taylor Swift but Reno can sell out 10,000 for events. The Wolf Pack averaged over 8,000 in attendance for men's basketball last season. People are also very willing to travel in the Reno Tahoe region. A lot of the Tahoe Knight Monsters season ticket holders are from Reno. Compared to other metro areas Reno Tahoe is close. Carson City, Fernley, Fallon, Truckee, and Tahoe are all within driving distance to Reno. At Reno Ice adult hockey players come from all the way from Tahoe, Truckee, Fallon, and Carson City. A 10,000 capacity arena is around what the Wolf Pack currently have. There are other venues in Reno around 10,000 capacity. A 10,000 capacity arena is roughly what other cities with similar metro areas have. Another tower would put the GSR closer to what the Row and downtown Reno offer.
I'm also in Reno and don't necessarily agree that this area doesn't need to be developed. The current arena on campus seats 12,000 people. They sell out their basketball games and contend in March Madness almost on a yearly basis as of late. Having a state of the art arena for the fans would be a plus. The current Grand Sierra Resort Theater only seats 2,995 people. They do have concerts there, but would be able to attract some larger acts with the new arena. There are quite a few hockey fans here as well being that we are so close to the snow. They built the Reno Ice Rink in the Southern part of town because locals were sick of traveling to Truckee and South Lake Tahoe for rec hockey. That rink would be used as practice ice for a minor league team since they need different facilities for games apparently. I've lived in Reno since 1995 so I've seen the growth. Reno has grown tremendously since Covid and I'm not sure we aren't hungry for some larger venues. But where I will agree with you all is that it's hard to see people wanting tax dollars spent on an arena. When the billionaire owner of one of the largest casino floors in NV wants public funds it doesn't sit well with people.
@@brodiebrazilTIF at GSR could work. Nevada never abolished redevelopment the way California did. Brian Sandoval is the former two-tern Governor of Nevada--he knew what he was saying--it was a subtle dig at Southern NV from a Northern NV politician. The ones to watch are City Councilman Devon Reese and former Lt. Gov. Kate Marshall, both would-be Mayors. There are areas around GSR (past the Walmart) that definitely are ripe for redevelopment.
UNR basketball draws pretty well at their current venue Lawlor Events Center on campus (capacity 11.5K). Doesn't seem unreasonable they would continue to have good crowds at a new venue also. I get what your saying about the financing though. Seems there's always a catch. On another note...I've noticed you haven't engaged any Athletics news of late. The new release of drawings for the Bally's resort and the grass saga in Sacramento have been in the news lately. I was hoping you might get some input on the grass situation from the groundskeeper from Oakland you just interviewed. Understandable if you taking a break from A's stuff for a while. Enjoying the other content your doing.
Wow does Nevada seem to be the place for sports barons to demand public money and they'll willingly give it. First the Raiders, then the A's, and now this. Have they learned nothing?
This is not about what Nevadans want. It is about what the government is willing to do. The GSR has put money into the pockets of a lot of people. The Raiders got the money because Las Vegas can outvote the rest of the state but making people in Reno pay for something in Las Vegas would be like making people in San Francisco play for something in Los Angeles. Reno tax dollars helped build a stadium seven hours away, that cost hundreds to get into.
Unless your name is Steve Ballmer arenas and stadium developers are going to ask for some form of public participation for their projects. Sports facilities are expensive to build and maintain and most likely rarely show a profit as they usually sit idle even if you have one or two tenants. Even with concerts and other events the costs are enormous. In a lot of cases the arenas are owned by a public entity as developers don't want to keep pouring money in for major repairs and have to pay property taxes. Developers are good at using "other peoples' money".
The Scottsdale area renderings were absolute junk. As I've stated before, I am a city planner. There was no parking in those plans whatsoever and no public transportation to the area. The Meruelo family are crooks
We would sell out that arena for hockey in the short term and if they are successful the long term. The Barracuda and Silver Knights were to be here before; however, the City didn't want to utilize money to retrofit the Event Center downtown, which would have been A LOT less than what is going to be asked for here.
lol we are a thriving winter sports destination. Tahoe is getting a pro hockey team and has a junior team. Reno has a thriving youth hockey culture. The Reno Ice Raiders (Senior A) sell out at roughly 1,000 people a game at $30 a ticket. The Nevada Wolf Pack have started an ice hockey club. The Adult League at Reno Ice has a waiting list for teams and players to join. My adult hockey team has had games with over 500 fans in attendance while not being in the top level. We consistently get over 100 people to watch our games. Reno could become the top destination for minor league hockey in the country. The people want it but there has not been an arena for it.
@@KWally Not true. Only one Canadian AHL team was in the top ten in average attendance in the AHL last season. The Cleveland Monsters, Hershey Bears, Chicago Wolves, and Coachella Valley Firebirds all averaged between 8,800 and 10,300. All of those teams were based in the United States. Only two Canadian teams averaged over 5,000 fans a game last season.
Notwithstanding Meruelo not wanting to put his own money (or borrow it) into the arena, I could see a 10k arena being ok. It's not NBA/NHL sized, those are usually around 20k, but it would be right in line with an AHL arena, and could attract concerts that want to hit up somewhere between northern California and Vegas. Not Taylor Swift, she won't play anywhere smaller than an NFL venue for the next decade or so. Of course, Alex just got a billion dollars, and he still has assets that could be leveraged to borrow the funds for the arena himself, he just decided to try not to.
I lived in Reno several years and absolutely loved it. Reno has a lot going for it...Tahoe is close by...Hiking and outdoors in Northern California...no state income tax and Reno does not try to compete with Vegas. I hope Reno gets this !
If a city's biggest selling point is there is another town nearby and that it has outdoor activities, then usually it means the place blows. Outdoor activities can be done almost anywhere and everywhere. I lived in Reno for 4 years, and it had low paying jobs even at a professional career with a high cost of housing. I moved back to California and earned double my salary for the same job. Lastly, there is a feeling that people are angry/unhappy in Reno, with all the aggressive drivers and attitude, which is probably from economic struggles. Tesla swindled the area with their tax-free gigafactory and recent mass layoffs.
I live in Phoenix & have watched Alex Meruelo & his sleazy business dealings. He’s a grifter & is only interested in controlling real estate that is adjacent to any new venue. Has no interest in sports & is only interested in lining his pockets-preferably with public funding- NOT his own.
I'm wondering if a 10k seat arena may be big enough for Reno... Brodie mentioned that UNR basketball is already drawing 11 thousand, think they would want room to grow. Also, the arena might not have ENOUGH seats for AHL hockey... I'm in Palm Springs, and our new arena is drawing near 10 thousand per night for our third year AHL team (Coachella Valley Firebirds).. and that's with a similar population base to the Reno metro (nearly 500,000 in Reno-Sparks area). And pretty confident that Acrisure Arena did not cost a billion dollars; original estimates put building the Acrisure at $250m.
the GSR owner never said any public money. Now he's hedging. I live in Reno and hope they tell him to fark off and have UNR renovate their existing 40 year old basketball venue (which is on campus) and which is just structurally fine and just needs some renovations. (Lawlor arena). Thanks for covering us Brodie!
Lawlor is great but I heard they were not allowed to expand, or replace it (which they would need to do for any renovations because of how it was built) because of the planetarium.
Meruelo doesn’t have $1B of liquid cash from the Coyotes sale. Yes, the NHL paid him $1B. But there was also debt on the team he had to pay off (I believe $150-$200MM). He also had to pay taxes on the capital gains of that $1B. Optimistically, he could’ve ended up with $600-$650MM form the sale of the Coyotes. Obviously he has other liquid cash available but who knows how much. Also, arena projects like this are never paid for completely in equity of the owner. There is going to be private construction debt and various other private loans made to the owner that will be paid back through the cash flow of the arena. Those aren’t considered public funds but they’re a part of the capital structure of every major development project like this. My guess is that the out of pocket cash equity amount of the total $1B capital cost would be less than $500MM, and it’s probably less than $400MM. None of that is to say that Reno should be providing public financing for the arena. I don’t know if they should or not. But it’s far from as simple as Meruelo getting $1B from the NHL and then turning around and investing all of that cash in the arena.
Nevada basketball does get 80% turnout in its current nearly 12k seat stadium so for those games it could work. I have no idea how the minor league hockey would draw though. I’d be shocked if the hotel tower gets built as the GSR rarely fills up its current hotel tower. Thanks for covering this story!
Funny enough, I was telling my friends during a visit to Reno in July about this whole thing and how I fully expect it to be yet another failed Alex Meruelo arena project. Reno was expected to get a new arena for an ECHL expansion team 5-7 years ago and that still hasn't happened. Long before there was ever consideration for Tahoe. If it didn't happen then, that arena isn't coming now with this guy.
Note to Nevada; be wary of partnering with Alex Mereulo. That said, if this gets built and they don’t name it “The Nevada A-Reno” then they will have squandered a golden opportunity. Cornball sells!
Reno isn’t Las Vegas, that is why it is plausible that this arena could fly. At one time in the distant past, Reno booked a lot of conventions. I wouldn’t vote against this plan for GSR. I hope it works for them. (I lived in Reno for 10+ years, so I might be biased)
How do we know that he has $1B liquid? I'm sure he was probable heavily leveraged with the 'Yotes so what he walked away with was probably much, much less. And this new venture in Reno may only make sense financially up to a point, and maybe not if he puts in all the money himself. i.e. it's not a straightforward as is presented here.
I thought part of the thing with the buyout that the organization had somewhere around $300-400k in unpaid debts, which was why there was initial skepticism (beyond the property angle) that he wouldn't go through with an expansion. He definitely didn't pocket $1b after it was all said and done, but not sure what his liquid assets are.
@@brodiebrazil I get what you are saying, but I think that's a drastic over simplification of the situation. Just because a lender will give you XX amount of money for one project doesn't mean they will give you the same amount for another.
9:31: He did not walk away with $1 billion. He borrowed money to buy the team. The terms with any lenders would have required that the debt be repaid upon any sale. The team also the large losses while he owned it ( one news story in June said it was $40-60 million a year) , so may have borrowed more later. Plus he had to pay capital gains taxes on the difference between the $425 million he bought the team for and $1 billion.
Maybe they're trying to get more college basketball tournaments there? MW or other pre-conference play. But yeah, seems a little suspect that first it seems like it's not going to have public funding, then now it does? 🤔 I live in Reno, and it's getting bigger, but not sure how much funding should be given to this project.
Brodie must Not understand that being Paid $1B for the Coyote Hockey Team Doesn’t Mean He Netted a $1B. The IRS wouldn’t Allow that to Happened unless He doesn’t mind Federal Prison time for Tax Invasion.
@@brodiebrazil But You Kept Saying as if He Netted "A Billion" Dollars from the Sale of the Coyotes to the NHL Implying that He had All the Funding Required for His "Billion" Dollar RENO Arena Project.
LOL Reno/Tahoe area is a Double-A market at best. They shouldn't waste an AHL team for an area that small. This thinking is one major factor on why the NHL has had lower TV ratings in recent years. That and doubling up AHL and NHL markets. Doing that deprives another big market of top-caliber hockey,
Surprise, surprise... 😒...A billion dollar arena is pretty outrageous for a college facility, let alone an AHL team. Yeah, it'll stay busy, but not selling $100 tickets. And the impression that I get is that a lot of that money will be spent on casinos and brass plated shops for fru fru retail. And one more observation. If Meruelo walked with a billion cash from the Coyotes sale, what does it say about his confidence level in this GSR on steroids project that he won't even use that gift for failure as collateral against a 20- or 30-year loan which this TIF is all predicated for?...I lived in Reno about five years back. That GSR ain't the The Strip. That whole area between GSR and the Walmart on 2nd, and between Kietzke and the river is pretty blighted at this point. If UNR needs an arena that glitzy, that badly, let them dip into their endowment. I'm hoping for a public backlash on this one...Leave the Roadrunners in Tucson, Meruelo. You've done enough damage down there...
Devil's advocate to the whole public funding argument: If the new arena is going to be the home arena for the University of Nevada Reno (a PUBLIC university) basketball team, it should at least partially be funded using PUBLIC funds. Where does the funding come from if the university builds an arena of their own?
Let's not forget ol' Alex didn't get that check for a billion dollars and get to keep it. I'm sure the state of Arizona took a pretty good chunk out of it in sales tax.
This would have been a GRAND plan if it were to take place prior to covid. I'm highly doubting this low $1 billion estimate for the entire project and I believe they only want $97 mil in TIF...that'll go up as well. But, with TKM taking the ice 10/24 and though i give that at least 2 seasons; unless they draw well a Reno AHL team would cannibalize all the TKM fans. No need to drive up the hill for 3rd division hockey when we'd have 2nd division hockey...but wait...would Utah want to maintain an affiliation for AHL in Reno or would they want the Grizzles to become the AHL affiliate and be within miles of the parent club. We wouldn't have 2 ECHL teams in the area, so there is where another wrinkle comes in. I think this would be an amazing thing for Reno, if it was all entirely privately funded, but not with public money. We still need to shoot down the State Bonds funding the A's stadium.
Taylor Swift will perform there, but it'll be 20 years from now when she's in her old and fat late stage Elvis phase. They'll have a special section for her fans to come with with their cats.
the roadrunners team is owned by AMhole but hot the players. I can not see utah not starting their own AHL team for their players, coaches, developmental ways etc, the major/minor league system works when both have same agenda, having different owners is going to cause headaches for the NHL team. If utah does start own affiliate AHL then roadrunners/reno has no players and cant see an unaffliated team making sense.
I’m guessing the T.I.F issue will be decided by the city council and not a referendum on the ballot. I cannot see conservative Reno voting for this. If you can’t come in the front door then try the back I suppose
Mereulo seems like a pretty bad businessman. He bought the local classic rock station here in LA some time ago and recently decided to fire the two beloved afternoon drive hosts (who themselves had been fired by another formerly beloved rock station until that was bought out by a conglomerate). Apparently he has a manager at the classic rock station who somehow doesn't know who Roger Waters is? But he runs a classic rock station? Bunch of clowns.

This is a ridiculous plan. Rich getting richer, and then have the NERVE to ask the poor/middle class for money. You are RICH. Use YOUR MONEY, or DON'T DO IT.
If this gentleman wants this badly enough then he should put his own money and accept the full risk! The taxpayers are entitled to a say about providing any money to a billionaire!
In a few years Vegas taxpayers may have to dig in their wallets to pay for Allegiant Stadium. Based on the history of sports franchises. If a team is losing, fewer fans go to ganes. Ask Oakland fans, theyve had two teams.
So he basically was planning on using the money he got from the NHL and, pouring it into this project in Reno but, now he’s probably being a cheapskate and wants to be a little worm and try and get every inch of the dollar out from the city officials in Reno, so his lazy butt will have more money to himself, what a terrible businessman.
I still think this world series is rigged . Weather or it's with or without my team . I just think this world series this year seem a little rigged . Especially with a documentary suspposed to happen. . If I had to choose a team to win or bet against it would be yankees for the win Whoops wrong video I comment on but still.
I have respect for this guy, he largely built his own billion dollar empire. I just have to wonder now if he's over extended. I mean, he owns a lot of stuff. He forfeited the Coyotes on what seems to me to be some petty differences with the state's land department. Disputes that I have to assume could have been worked through. And he just took a check and sailed off into the sunset? If he's really making good investments he wouldn't need to lean on public support so much, right? Sounds like desperation to me but I can barely afford video games, let alone a bunch of casino's, so maybe he's in the right.
The more you look into him, the less you will respect him. He's more of a bully than a smart businessman, has a long history of not paying what he owed (especially with the Coyotes), and made a point to burn bridges rather than build them. He's an absolute snake.
@@AndyGeetar Admittedly I only know what I hear in the youtubes and on wikipedia, so not much. Main focus -Mereulo is a joke.
The best option would be to build a new arena in the area around the Reno event center but that idea was shut down a long time ago.
This crum needs things I cannot say in a public forum. He personally cost me about $20K/yr income by effing AZ and moving the NHL franchise.
Were you an usher/ security or stadium operators or TV technician? I know the now former TV director of the Coyotes. I feel for you folks.
"The project is expected to drive significant economic benefits........". Every single project like this is "expected to drive significant economic benefits", the problem is, they rarely actually do.
A con artist trying to scam the public.

I live in Reno and this area is definitely not dying to be developed. If the voters have any say (doubtful) this request will be denied.
thanks for the firsthand input. that was my point about certain areas being worthy of a TIF... others maybe not so much
@@brodiebrazil Our local politicians tend to approve whatever developers want. I won't go into why but it's not hard to guess.
I also live in Reno. I concur. They'd lose a public vote.
I guess someone there thinks the casinos generate endless tax revenue, so they can toss money around.
From what I have read I am skeptical that the A's will be in Vegas
This is not about what Nevadans want. It is about what the government is willing to do. The GSR has put money into the pockets of a lot of people. The Raiders got the money because Las Vegas can outvote the rest of the state but making people in Reno pay for something in Las Vegas would be like making people in San Francisco play for something in Los Angeles. Reno tax dollars helped build a stadium seven hours away, that cost hundreds to get into.
That is not specific to Nevada.
How would this effect the ECHL team down in Lake Tahoe?
I don't think that market could support two pro hockey teams.
it's not exactly right around the corner, but it's probably not great considering a small market
The Scottsdale area renderings were absolute junk. As I've stated before, I am a city planner. There was no parking in those plans whatsoever and no public transportation to the area. The Meruelo family are crooks
It’s already bad that Arizona lost one team and now the person responsible is deliberately trying to get rid of another one!!!!
Reno I doubt would support hockey
theres a brand new ECHL team up in Stateline, first week! The Tahoe Lake Monsters. Reno supports AAA baseball ok.
We would sell out that arena for hockey in the short term and if they are successful the long term. The Barracuda and Silver Knights were to be here before; however, the City didn't want to utilize money to retrofit the Event Center downtown, which would have been A LOT less than what is going to be asked for here.
@@edwil11110,000 is too much for the AHL on a nightly basis other than a couple of the Canadian teams.
lol we are a thriving winter sports destination.
The American Hockey League better have a backbone and deny any request to relocate the Road Runners to NV
I wonder if the NHL owners can force him out of his AHL team. Not sure how the structure of the AHL is after the NHL bought most of the teams.
Not just university president but former governor Brian Sandoval. Should have had a clearer understanding before he said that in a press conference
Well wouldn’t that suck if the Roadrunners go to Reno. First the Sidewinders become Aces and now THIS!
the GSR owner never said any public money.
LoL at the people who thought a billionaire was paying for anything he can get you to pay for.
And that is definitely cornball.
He definitely didn't pocket $1b after it was all said and done, but not sure what his liquid assets are.
selling the coyotes this year for $1b is an instant influx of $1b, or at least that much credit alone. aside from previous assets or income.
@@brodiebrazil I get what you are saying, but I think that's a drastic over simplification of the situation. Just because a lender will give you XX amount of money for one project doesn't mean they will give you the same amount for another.
He has to pay capital gains tax on his billion so "take home" is less than that.
And how much money has he lost since the Coyotes sale? And I'm really surprised that he got $1 billion out of a struggling team.
Fun fact the gsr used to be a mgm grand
9:31: He did not walk away with $1 billion. He borrowed money to buy the team. The terms with any lenders would have required that the debt be repaid upon any sale. The team also the large losses while he owned it ( one news story in June said it was $40-60 million a year) , so may have borrowed more later. Plus he had to pay capital gains taxes on the difference between the $425 million he bought the team for and $1 billion.
You make it sound like he didn't get paid. He got paid. His possible debts and tax liability isn't anywhere what your crying heart believes.
Plus it looks especially bad considering he got 1 billion for a franchise that was only valued at 500 million, so he's swimming in unearned profit.
What is an AHL team really going to do for Reno?
Brodie must Not understand that being Paid $1B for the Coyote Hockey Team Doesn’t Mean He Netted a $1B. The IRS wouldn’t Allow that to Happened unless He doesn’t mind Federal Prison time for Tax Invasion.

LOL Reno/Tahoe area is a Double-A market at best. They shouldn't waste an AHL team for an area that small. This thinking is one major factor on why the NHL has had lower TV ratings in recent years. That and doubling up AHL and NHL markets. Doing that deprives another big market of top-caliber hockey,
Reno should say no
Surprise, surprise...
Stadiums, imo, should not be taxpayer funded unless the taxpayers get some of the profit/benefits
I wouldn’t trust anything Alex M. says.
By the time this thing gets built, TS might be has-been enough to play in Reno.
I'm not all that surprised by this.
Reno is the #103 market size, lotta money for a smaller market
Arizona is losing the Roadrunners too? And wow a lot of salty Arizona people in the comments, Reno could absolutely support the team.
Deep dive. That you Mr Brazil
I’m guessing the T.I.F issue will be decided by the city council and not a referendum on the ballot. I cannot see conservative Reno voting for this. If you can’t come in the front door then try the back I suppose
But that could work for the future final four
Or more

I have respect for this guy, he largely built his own billion dollar empire. I just have to wonder now if he's over extended. I mean, he owns a lot of stuff. He forfeited the Coyotes on what seems to me to be some petty differences with the state's land department. Disputes that I have to assume could have been worked through.
