    Old Geezer here-- excellent advise u give my boy!-- i'll be retiring in about 4-5 yrs and plan to amp up my buy/ sell of guitars peds, amps etc... The 20% rule works and ur key word that makes it all happen is" be honest with each buy u make!" DONT GET ALL FUCKIN EMOTIONAL ABOUT AN ITEM, think smart and do ur research . The market will have buyers that will only pay so much , regardless of what u think its worth!!! Look forward to more of ur vids !!! Rockdaddy has left the platform

    Couple more tips :
    - The lower prices are always going to be given to you by places that need more space : studios, backline companies, etc who have to sell out at ridiculous prices because they need to reclaim their space will give you *unbelievable deals*. This usually apply more to rack-mount gear and professional tech gear in general. However, it is still possible to find such deals for instruments, especially drums and piano, and for microphones as well. Keep in mind that drums and pianos do take a lot of space and pianos in particular cost an absolutely insane ton to ship so I would steer clear of this market unless you have some real acquisition power.
    - Always sell something to finance something else *before* you buy it and you will never need a credit card again.
    - If the item is harder to sell (too specialized and expensive), then you can easily *rent* it instead and make more money over the long run! Studio gear in particular rack-mount units can be easily rented and there is a definite market for it. Hell, you can even rent your analogue gear for people to send their tracks through over the web. Why not?!
    - Have a good ability to at least set-up, if not repair the instrument. I paid 150 bucks for a stellar collectible snare drum, restored it, and sold it for 300 bucks at the next-door shop within 20 minutes. Their employee bough it 400 the next day.
    - Maintain good relationships with everyone.
    - There is an exception when you *can* buy new but only from distributors, directly, like a music shop would. It takes contacts, but it's not impossible to place yourself this way. If your online shop get big enough - even if it's on Reverb or eBay - you might just be making money in your sleep...!

    My father bought an original Hohoner Madcat in the 70's I think he paid £65 brand new and it's now worth over 3 grand. Me old man left me a fantastic guitar collection about 70 in total, he was right handed and I'm left handed, that's the kicker but their heirlooms and will go to my boys when I shuffle off. Then there's the lefties I've bought over the years, the advice this chap is giving out is sound but you have to know your stuff to repeatedly make a profit and I expect Doom knows his stuff. Great upload my man.

    This is great advise if you are buying on price alone. Sometimes though you find a guitar that’s so amazing you have to buy it, new, used, vintage, whatever. If you buy guitars to play them and love them and you’re okay with losing a couple bucks if you have to I value tone above resale.

    Interesting idea.
    I've never purchased a guitar with the thought of selling it down the road.
    I've always tried to purchase things that I know I'll love, and will most likely not want to sell.
    Even some of my first guitars that are nothing special I love to keep around,
    I guess that makes me a collector?

    • @I.am_Groot
      @I.am_Groot 4 роки тому

      I enjoy being a collector also, but price/value is at the center of every purchase that I make. Some of what I enjoy is having things that are hard to find. This does not always mean they are 'valuable' but my 90ls Korean set-neck Tele with passive EMG pickups cost me $225 and is a serious player. So thats my 2 cents, work on buying gear that you can get your $$ back from when it comes time to sell. You will end up with lots more hands on time and just might find that what you really love isn't always what you thought you wanted.

      Nothing wrong with that, I'm the same I have my first guitar a Marlin sidewinder considered the Strat killer of it's day. Nothing wrong with keeping things you have an emotional attachment to. I buy guitars to sell and I keep the ones I like, I'm also left handed so it's easier to see why I do that but the same applies regardless of the orientation of your guitars.

    I just came across this. I sell my personal high end pedals. I’ve yet to make a profit. They’re mint, never left my home, non smoker, I’m a pedal addict so they’re not used a lot. If I want to sell them I lose so much money. I’ve yet to make a profit. Anyway, good video. 👍

      Pedals can be tough to make a profit, but I still apply this principle (always used, close to 20% Rule as I can get, etc) and tend to minimize losses. Bought a pedal a month ago for about $50 less than I could sell it for, which is a big profit margin for a pedal flip.

    Hey Dude! would you be up for doing a video showing how to set up a guitar for c standard tuning? how to set intonation, whether or not to mess with truss rod etc? say going from e standard down to C? really appreciate all your hard work! Thankyou from Cornwall England!!!x

    • @DoesItDoom
      @DoesItDoom  5 років тому +1

      karlosquinky hey man! Thanks for the suggestion; I will certainly give it some thought as I’m sure it’s a common question. The general answer is that the setup process itself is very similar to how you would setup any guitar, but there are a few important considerations depending on what string gauge you use, how you have to adjust the nut slots to accommodate those stings, and how much tension they will put on the neck. I personally use relatively light strings, such that the guitar nearly always plays and feels like a set of 9-42’s in Standard Tuning, which typically doesn’t require any nut slot filing or massive adjustments of the truss rod. For example, I run 10-46 strings in C-Standard and 11-49 strings in B-Standard.

    • @karlosquinky
      @karlosquinky 5 років тому +1

      nice! thanks for the quick reply! so for example I use 9-42's on my e standard guitars and the guitar that I currently have in c standard has a set of 10-52's (heavy top skinny bottom's to be exact!) ( Had to pay a tech £35 -$45 to do that setup!!! - sure you can see now why i need to learn how to do it myself!!!) so what you are saying is I could get away with just adjusting the bridge saddles and maybe filing the nut a little? Cheers!!! @@DoesItDoom

    • @DoesItDoom
      @DoesItDoom  5 років тому

      karlosquinky your trussrod will still probably need some adjustment. Assuming you have a Tune-o-matic style bridge, start by checking out this four part series by John Carruthers:
      ua-cam.com/video/zpphzkj4Wh0/v-deo.html
      An interesting way to go about it, if you like the way your C standard guitar plays currently, is to go through the steps John discusses and take accurate measurements of your neck relief, action where the neck meets the body, and nut action. You can document those numbers for reference. If you find your nut needs slotting / adjustment, you might be best taking it to a tech, but all the other adjustments are usually pretty straight forward once you’ve done it a few times.

      Ernie Ball not even Slinky is the set I use in C standard on my Les Paul. It did required a small truss rod adjustment and nut modification. Also the intonation with some Les Pauls need some of the saddles flipped to get the intonation good. It rocks like a motherfvcker!! From there drop B is easily in reach as well! 🤟

    Very good point about new items being a waste of money. And it is valid to any manufactered good. The first buyer pays all the taxes involved in the chain of making that good, including moving that item around the world when imported, then pays for the customs, then pays for the existence of the store and for what? When you arrive home from the store with a brand new guitar, it is already "used" for the second market. With exception of first need itens (clothes, shoes, food) buy used, people! So you sell it as is and no refunds or exchanges? CN you do that on reverb? I play mainly acoustics and I have a Taylor 324ce I bought for 2199 and it’s basically almost mint I even have the boxes. It’s about 8 months old and I just realize I prefer Martins ir even other Taylor. I got caught up on the look and not the sound of this pretty guitar. Sounds fine but not compared to my Martin. • @DoesItDoom
      @DoesItDoom  Рік тому +1

      When it comes to shipping, you can purchase some insurance through the carrier (FedEx, UPS, etc.), which I would recommend. That said, if something is damaged during shipping, it's not always easy to get your insurance claim paid for. You have to prove that the guitar was packaged correctly and not mishandled by the carrier. In my experience, you need to show the box itself is damaged if you want the claim to be processed. My recommendation is to pack the guitar as securely as you can, making sure to wrap the headstock in bubble wrap and slack the strings. Generally shipping inside a case is recommended. If you want to sell local, Facebook Marketplace is probably the best bet these days, but you can list on Craigslist as well.

    I know I’m late to the party, but I know you talked about buying used and selling that way. However, was that for American/authentic models and if so can you still apply the same concept to lower models given that giants like guitar center have them new for cheaper?

    • @DoesItDoom
      @DoesItDoom  2 роки тому +2

      It’s tough to make a lot of money in the space. The idea here was more to break even or maintain a slight profit margin. Generally if you make $200-300 profit on a guitar flip, you did well. Finding lower end models actually works out well and the ROI ends up higher. People are often eager to get rid of them (sometimes they have stopped playing entirely) and will sell them for below market value. So say you get your hands on a nice epiphone for $200 and sell it for $400, your return on investment is higher (100% ROI) than scoring a nice Gibson for $800 and selling it for $1000 (25% ROI). In the long run, when running a business you wait to aim for those higher margins and larger ROI. It’s also easier to make the sale for $400 than it is for $800 because your audience of interested buyers is bigger.

    Does the 20% rule cover selling fees and possible shipping costs?

  • @RByrne
    @RByrne 2 роки тому +2

    You're absolutely right about fees; they can totally eat up any profit you would otherwise make from finding a good guitar cheap.
    I find the best deals are around the $800-2000 price point. They are sold often far cheaper as people buy them on credit as a first guitar, then give it up and sell them rather than trade them in. Also, the market for buying are players who know what they want and will pay what they're worth.
    Guitar shops, especially chains, are where I always find the best deals. They often have staff that don't always know the proper price, and for them, they need to move product. A trade in means a new sale, so they can afford to lose a little. Also, they pay far less for the instrument in the first place, and usually only in store credit.

      A lot of work with pretty low margins if you’re trying to make substantial profit. Generally if you make $200-300 on a guitar flip after shipping and fees that’s a pretty good day. Be prepared to do some repair work and setup work yourself, learn how to pack and ship efficiently, be prepared to buy the deals as soon as you see them, know the market well, etc. It’s a lot of work with pretty low ROI in my experience.

    A huge thing you are leaving out in the example is that the $1000 is THE FINAL PRICE including tax and shipping and without considering this you might as well kiss your profits goodbye (depending, obviously)... not to mention that the listing at $1200 does not take into account sales/ income tax nor reverb/eBay seller fees.
    ALWAYS take all fees into consideration before calculation profit margin/ markup. Small businesses constantly fuck themselves by forgetting/ neglecting to do this to make their business seem/ feel more profitable.

    After accumulating over 100 guitars since the late 70s, I began selling/trading many off 5 yrs ago. Selling high end gear on Ebay is a nightmare. It is a buyers market and a sellers hell. Of the 20 or so guitars I have tried to sell , most being betreen $3 - 10 grand. I only sold 3. The rest either people wanted for nothing, con artist or dead beat bidders.
    I just ran a rare Ernie Ball Van Halen Sig "93" pink for 10 days. The auction ended today with one bidder and yup, you guessed it. A sob story about his PP was suspended due to a "crook" and PP took the crook's side so he would have to find another way to pay. Nothing I have never heard before and a big red flag. #2. He has a PO box. I stated guitar would be 2-3 day AIR, sig delivery ONLY. I will now only buy/sell inexpensive items on Ebay and Reverb. I may lose my ass but I would rather drive my guitars to a large city and try my luck selling to a large music store than play Russian roulette on Ebay.

Add to the fact that the Gold Top I bought is discountinued, I think I'm g2g as far as it not losing value and only trend upwards. Although I bought a brand new Taylor less than a year ago and I want to sell it not because it’s no good but I want to buy another guitar I really want in the same price range that’s brand new. My wife is having a breakdown if I buy another so I’ll just trade them so to speak. I bought my Taylor 324ce for 2199 and it’s basically mint with the box and everything. I’m just wondering what to sell it for. If I apply his rule to the 2199 people will just buy a brand new one. I’m also worried about shipping damage. I would still sell on Reverb simply due to the size of the user base and reach you get on a listing. The additional $20 fee on $1000 sale, while I’m not happy about it, won’t lead me to stop using the platform. I got a autographed Dimebag Darrell Southern cross Washburn. It's number 15 of 100. It has a certificate of authenticity on the back headstock. The issue I have ran into is China is making some really bad counterfeit knock offs. I've seen this online there is several tail tail signs of things that is so obviously wrong like the wrong font on the headstock the letters going the wrong direction the wrong pickups etc. Mine is totally legit. Back when these guitars was being made there was the American built and the Korean built. Mine is a Korean built. But I was standing there when Dimebag autographed this guitar for me. I had a picture but it was destroyed in a house fire. Luckily the guitar wasn't in the house obviously. I mean I'm only asking 9,633.33. which is extremely reasonable in today's market for this guitar. The only reason I'm even considering selling it is because I'm a single father with two daughters I've been in a car accident I haven't been able to work. They have it set up where you they don't do partial or temporary disability. If you get on disability and you ever go back to work you can never get on disability again. So I'm behind on all my bills I mean worrying bad financial need of me doing something drastic like selling my absolute number one most prized possession. This guitar has been my most prized possession since 2002. But my daughters and their needs means more than my possessions. If you could give me some advice I would much appreciate it. Because I'm sick and tired of people that don't know what they're talkin about trying to tell me that it's fake or it's a counterfeit.
