- Prodigy Bowlers Tour is our webcast series, showing unofficial, informal challenge matches among some of our more dedicated junior bowlers who choose to stay after league on Saturdays. In this latest episode, five youngsters stayed to compete in a series of "Survivor"-style matches, eventually winnowing the field down to two players. Here we see the final frames of the initial match, followed by both the semi-final and final matches in their entirety. Plus, for the first time ever in this webcast series, we talk to the four bowlers who advanced to the semi-final match so you can get to know them a little. USBC Bronze Certified Coach Randy Brown, who for five years was the voice of PGA TOUR Radio and is inducted in the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, has the play-by-play.
Please feel free to leave comments about our videos and the action in them. But if you're going to critique the games of the kids involved in this video or any of our other videos, please limit your remarks to being of a constructive nature. Ridiculing kids is no way to help them get better. They're kids, and my hope in producing these videos is to give them a fun experience that proves memorable for all the right reasons.
Just finished the video today. This telecast was more interesting and informational than most recent PBA telecasts today. You even had some player show what ball they are using. I've been telling the PBA to do that for years and they refuse. I guess they like to keep losing viewers.
It's not consistent. And most recently, they didn't do it for the US Open. There is something about the PBA where if they don't make money directly, they don't talk about it. From the drinks the bowlers drink during the game to what balls people are using. And that hook rating chart of 1-10 they sometimes show isn't enough. They don't ask the bowlers about what balls they are using or ask them why or ask them surface prep, pin, etc. This is bowling for a mostly bowler audience. The PGA channel goes through everything from shaft length, to club head angle, swing speed, etc. The PBA is run by a bunch of idiots. I've tried to get them to make changes the past 10 years and they have implemented some including intro music (which they do completely wrong from what I suggested, advertisements on shirts, to better camera view - I like the back POV - the one you see when you bowl, not that 3/4 camera down the lane that shows the ball spinning with no perception of board etc.)

Thanks, Daniel. That was something I've been doing on these videos from the outset. I know that these kids are not familiar to most viewers, so I figured it was a way to help viewers follow the action a little easier.

@Nolan Kuck - Thanks for asking. We've only been doing these videos of our junior league kids since this season began in September. The rapid growth in viewership and subscribers (still in the hundreds, not thousands as of now) is encouraging and has given me reason to ponder the feasibility of taking this show on the road. But I run this junior program at BZ Roswell and wouldn't want to abandon our kids. That said, I have considered growing this webcast series by taking it around the Atlanta area on occasion, or perhaps inviting kids from other bowling centers to join us. If you ever find yourself in the area, you'd be welcome to join us. (I would need your parents' permission to include you in a video, though.)

@jim minicozzi - Your comment is not helpful. Look, I run the Junior Bowling program where these kids bowl. This webcast series isn't intended to be a representation of the greatest youth bowlers in America. If that's what you're looking for, may I direct you to CBS Sports Network this Summer as they will be covering the Junior Gold finals in Cleveland. This webcast series is intended to celebrate Junior Bowling, and to give the kids in OUR program the opportunity to compete "on television" in an environment that simulates something approximating a "TV finals." The kids who participate are the ones who like to stay after league and stage these unofficial, informal and impromptu after-league challenge matches. Some of them (specifically, Logan and Charlie) are consistently two of the best U15 Boys in the State of Georgia), and I'll put them up against any two U15 Boys you got. The others are admittedly a work in progress, each on a different stage of their development, some further along than others. Brandon, for instance, is in just his second full season of bowling. I'd say that while he has a long way to go, he has made remarkable progress in a very short period of time. Some are more fully invested in competitive bowling than others. Some are still very green. But that's the whole point, dude. Junior Bowling is about taking kids WHEREVER THEY ARE ON THE SPECTRUM and helping their game grow, and perhaps more importantly, helping their love for the game grow along with it. Having some douche like you come along and take a swipe at them by just saying, "they aren't "really good" (YET) is a cheap shot and fails to serve the sport of bowling in any constructive way. If you truly are a supporter of the sport of bowling, then I would advise you to think twice before you pop off the next time with a mean-spirited insult, and realize that your doing so reveals far more about you than it does about the kids to whom you're referring. If you have something constructive to offer to help them improve their games or for us to help improve this webcast series, I'm all ears. But if all you have to offer is to take cheap shots from the cheap seats, then go find someone else to harrass. Remember, when you post here, you're not only revealing yourself as a jerk to me -- their coach and Youth Director -- but also to their parents, who read these remarks, too. Further, if you're truly a supporter of bowling, keep in mind that whenever you make it appear that merely getting into the arena puts youngsters at risk of being the butt of snarky, useless comments like yours, you don't make it more inviting for other kids to get involved in this sport and programs like ours. Quite to the contrary -- you discourage them. That does not help bowling. It hurts bowling. Either get with the program or get lost.
I miss youth bowling. I got my first 200 at 8 and then my best game ever at 16 of 298 still chasing 300 to this day at 23
Reminds me of when I was 13 or 14... I'd always start flagging in the 3rd. It was real difficult trying to keep my mental game in check as tiredness crept in too. It wasn't till I was in my 20's that I could play to four games with consistency and keep my concentration sharp.
Now I watch my own kids during league play, and they really flag in the 3rd! Sure, you try to keep them focused and get their head up, but it's just youth - we've all been there : )
These early PRODIGY videos look so weird to me now, with the camera tripod positioned on the floor and all the players walking in front of the camera. We eventually figured out that we'd get a better shot by positioning the tripod up on the counter-tops behind the settee area. But those counters were not as stable as one might have expected, and it gave us the "shaky cam" shots. Eventually, thanks to our viewers' response to a GoFundMe campaign, we were able to purchase the camera platform that we use today, which gets the camera up even higher. Gives the show a much, much different look than we see here on this episode.

11 is plenty old enough to be bowling at a "real bowling alley." We've got kids in our league that are as young as 6, and they do great. You should find a bowling center in your area that has a Youth program and go sign up. You'd have a blast.

Logan has a long way to go, and he will go far with his passion. Charlie's ball has a beautiful roll to it and one smooth form.
Logan is 13. He has time. He is far beyond any 13 year old I've ever seen. Some of the techniques he employs are so far advanced, they're very rarely seen in someone his age (and his size -- he's a SMALL 13). In fact, he employs some techniques that I don't even see in a lot of adult scratch bowlers. That said, he has his sights set so high, it should come as no surprise. What he lacks in ability he more than makes up for in work ethic. That's his real secret weapon. This kid is so committed and willing to work, nobody's ever going to beat him at working at it. Charlie's the same way. But Charlie's a little older and a lot bigger. Their games are very different, but they get very similar results most of the time.
BrownswickBowling I'm not disagreeing there, thats exactly what I was saying, he reminds me of myself when I was his age although I'm left handed his style is similar other than the high backswing, mine has always been short like Earl Anthony's. Im sure well see Logan on the PBA someday. Was my dream till I hurt myself racing motorcross. Logan is VERY advanced compared to alot of kids his age in this sport.

Just a question out of curiosity for you TwhBowling, but out of the 5 that played here, why comment on Brandon being especially good? Between Brandon, Logan, Christian, Daniel, and Charlie, the way he throws requires the least skill and is downright the easiest way to bowl between the 5 of them. I'm not trying to be disrespectful here, but his bowling style is real similar to old men who have difficulties hooking their ball.

Jeez. I'm 19 and still roll the 8 pound ball! I bowl maybe once a month on average though and manage 170 without any practice so its alright I guess.
How fast does Brandon throw the ball? I mean it seems like he has the line right but it doesn't look like he is getting the speed to hit the pocket correctly and consistently.

They have really good revs for their age, and good fundamentals to go along with it.
Some are pretty far along. Others have progressed a surprising amount in a very short period of time. And others are a work in progress. But the ones who stay at it will succeed. They all love the game, and that's a key ingredient.

Tell Brandon to aim for a 6 pin when shooting a 10 pin that's what I did when I always missed a 10 pin in the right gutter then when he starts missing it left aim for the 9 pin until he gets to the 10 pin
Unfortunately, he doesn't always miss it on the right. He's got some issues we're about to start tackling with regards to his footwork. For starters, his first step (with his right foot) goes to the right, when it should cross over in front of his left foot. I think that's what causes his arm and hand to bounce outside as he takes the ball back, which puts him in a weak position very early in the swing. He's shown me on occasion that he can overcome that problem. But here's the crazy thing about Brandon. This is just the second full year he's been bowling. Think about that for a minute. He hasn't even been bowling for 2 years yet. He's made remarkable progress in a very short amount of time.

you don't need to throw strait at spares. it takes way more skill to hook at a spare. I don't use a spare ball anymore and I have way better games now because I learned how to position my hand to throw a high end ball straighter for the corner pins.
It's true. I used to hook it at everything but the 10 pin, 6-10 or 3-10. But overall, I think you'll find that most professional bowlers prefer to go with a spare ball and throw it straight at spares. Even the players who don't use a spare ball (like Norm Duke) straighten out their shot and go straight at spares. Remember, with spares, you don't need power, you need accuracy. (The exception is spares that have double wood. Like the bucket or 3-6-9-10. I would always throw my strike ball at those and hook it into the 2-5-8 on a bucket or the 3-6-9 of the other spare.)

Kilo Mysre guess what it is easy to slow the ball down and hook. it is not easy to learn how to close down your angles enough to shoot straight at a pin. that's why you see pro's using spare ball because it is easier

Changing out his Switch Grip. Actually, I"m not entirely sure if he uses Switch Grips or Interchangeable Thumbs. Two different brands of the same kind of product. Basically, there's a removable sleeve that screws into the thumbhole on all his bowling balls. He unscrews the sleeve from one ball and pops it into the ball he's about to throw. That way, all his bowling balls have the exact same feel on the thumb. (Personally, I'm not a fan of either Switch Grips or ITs, but a lot of players swear by them.)

The comment about Christian not throwing straight at his spares on the left, uncalled for. I hook at my spares on the left and straight on the right (right handed). It's what's comfortable, when will people stop trying to change the way people/kids bowl (trying to make them traditional). Let them throw it the way that is comfortable/natural for them just help them dial it in for their style (can you say two handers? Traditional coaches).

what editing software do you use?
Final Cut Pro X on a very fast Mac. With a little help from Photoshop CC. It's even a little more complicated than that. The scoresheet template is something I built in Photoshop. Then I have to go back into Photoshop and adjust the background color on each person's scoresheet to match their shirt color (so people not familiar with these kids can easily see who's who). Then I export the scoresheet, with alpha channel (transparency) as a .png file. That gets imported into FCP-X. Then the scores are just text I add using the text generator inside FCP-X. It's a little tricky to get them to space properly so they fit right. I have to manually adjust it every time I produce a new video. Typically, I'll get home on Saturdays from the bowling alley at around 2 or 3 PM, and I'll work on these videos anywhere from 12 hours ('til I go to bed around 2 AM that night), or possibly even into the next day. This one, being longer than all the others I'd done thus far, and which had as many as five people bowling (making the scoring part of the post-production all the more complicated), didn't get finished until well into Sunday night. I probably spent close to 24-26 hours working on the video after filming it. The play-by-play is the last thing I do after all the editing is done. I just watch it as I record the PxP on another computer, and then bring it over and sync it up with the video. I've been in broadcast media for my entire adult life (since around 1969), and have done video production now for about 15 years or so. This is not what you would call a simple project. But I do it because I love this game, I love the kids, and I want to promote junior bowling. Oh yeah, I'm also a coach (Bronze level at this time...just went to my Silver class...still studying to take the test).

Brandon’s rev rate is probably like 125
409 Productions - It’s not that low, but he does have a lower rev rate than a lot of our players. But that actually works to his advantage because it enables him to be equally effective on a variety of different patterns. Of all the kids in Georgia, Brandon had the highest finish of any of them at Junior Gold this past Summer. It’s because it didn’t matter what pattern he was on, he just threw his little down and in shot and never strayed too far from the pocket. Revs aren’t everything.

Don't bend forward. Keep your body straight and if you can't swing your arm high enough you probably need a lighter ball. Cause with a ball that's too heavy you won't be able to follow threw all the way

Logan has a lot of potential but definitely needs a weaker ball for when his line dries out because he struggled with adjusting the last game and most of his shots went high
He has other equipment. And unlike most 13 year olds I know, he's also got a couple of different releases that he can use to control the amount of hook he gets. He is surprisingly advanced for his age. The sky's the limit for this kid.

Ryan Ashton - They're regulation pins, alright. And fairly new ones at that. The pins were new about two months ago.
The sound may be because the only microphone being used is the one on the camera, which is about 85 feet away from the pins. When you watch bowling on network television, they've got the pin decks mic'd and mixed. In this case, the audio track from the camera was the only nat sound track available, and it was mixed just low enough that it wouldn't drown out the play-by-play. Trust me, these are regulation pins. And fairly new ones, at that. They were brand new, out-of-the-box from Brunswick only about two months before this video was shot.
Habeev07 - They are not Twister pins. (I won't bowl or coach anywhere that uses those God awful things.). They are regulation Brunswick pins. I walked down the catwalk next to lane 40 and took a close-up picture of them the first day I saw that they'd been installed.

Hey it likes so usually when you get a competitor bowling ball or one that can be drilled usually has finger grips in it and that's why you hear that popping noise when they released the ball

If you were watching last week's telecast of the PBA Collegiate Invitational on FS1, you'd have seen the very same Charles Bostic bowling for his school, Webber International. Unfortunately, they got beat in the semi-final by the eventual winner, Wichita State, who looked unstoppable. Another PRODIGY alum, Tyrell Ingalls, was also on the telecast bowling for his school, SCAD (Savannah College of Arts & Design), who made it to the final match. Proud of these two young men. Both are gonna just keep getting better and better. And I can pretty much guarantee you that you will continue seeing them on PBA telecasts for years to come. Both young men are tremendously talented.

Thing is I love bowling and I'm decent but it's like £5 a game and I can't afford that like seriously when I wanna practice my hook I can't so I never really developed it much
Talk to the folks at your local bowling center. Most centers have specials that go on at various times throughout the week.
i am 13 and i amd pretty good at bowling. i average 124 in my league but we have horrible oil paterns. Theese kids should come bowl at my house and they will get 130s 140s definatly. i went down to the city lanes an had front 5 and spared the rest of game and got a 235. oil paterns help
McapTn oil patterns do help but if you want to get better the hard part of bowling is learning to adjust to the lane

I want to do a little League bowling team I am just waiting to see if my mom and dad would let me because then you have to pay for the bowling balls because the bowling alley balls suck and the pay my own shoes and then you have to pay for own ball now if my dad did not throw his bowling things
just make sure to get a heavier ball than you would use a house ball. (that makes no sense lol) lets say you use a 8 pound house ball, if you were looking to buy a ball id say get a 10 or 12 pound ball. when the ball fits your hand properly it feels a lot lighter. when i started bowling i used a 8 pound house ball and made the mistake of buying a 9 pound ball when i should have got a 12 pound ball. anyways if you do a little league, i hope it goes well for you! bowling is a fun sport!
