Winter on Stevens Pass

  • Great Northern’s historic crossing of Stevens Pass has never been easy. The first two months of 2020 proved particularly harsh as “Old Man Winter” relentlessly pounded BNSF’s Scenic Subdivision with a barrage of winter storms. This provided the perfect setting for capturing trains in punishing arctic conditions.
On the west side, we will visit Skykomish, which lies at the base of the mountain grade. From here, trains dig in for the 2.2% climb across the Foss River Trestle, over the icy waters of Deception Creek, and into Scenic and the west bore of the 7.8-mile-long Cascade Tunnel.
On the east side, trains emerge back into the wintry setting at the east portal of the Cascade Tunnel. From Berne, it’s a stiff 2.2% descending grade to Merritt and Winton as the railroad navigates the foothills of the Cascades. Leaving the snow zone behind, we will tour the former railroad town of Leavenworth, which has been transformed into a Bavarian village decorated in Christmas lights for most of the winter. Bundle up and get ready for a chilling railroad adventure!

I write this comment from New Delhi. Whenever I watch these videos, I'm literally glued to the screen of my phone. I don't know, if I will ever visit these locations. I, though, give thumbs up many times to the Presenter - very crisp & clear voice - and videography...extremely mesmerizing. It actually reflects the hard work put into making these presentations. 😊

I love it! Your willingness to tromp through snow and ice and get wet gave us amazing scenes. That video of Skykomish with the power outage is really eerie. I frequently watch the VR camera at Sky and really enjoy the scene.

7idea Productions are definitely the best producers of incredibly beautiful, insightful and creative train videos on the planet. Somehow, I believe your business involves doing other types of videos besides the train videos? I realize that this one was added to your channel four months ago, and this is the first comment I’ve made on it even though I’ve watched it three times. I guarantee you I will watch it again in the future, just as I will all your other videos. Thank you so much.

Beautiful!! Love watching these videos and winding down on a cold winter's night. Leaves one yearning for a good ole railroad trip through the Pacific Northwest. And this one named after John Frank Stevens, the chief engineer of the Panama Canal under Teddy Roosevelt from 1905-1907 :) Stevens should get more notoriety, incredible man in his own right! An American legend indeed!

    • @bt2476
      @bt2476 4 місяці тому +4

@@7ideaproductions yes absolutely! There's a very good book on Stevens by a Cliff Foust, the man was super tough fellow. A rare breed. He usually went scouting with a Native American guide, and would often go by himself, in conditions so cold on occasion he couldn't sleep, and was forced to tramp back and forth the entire night just in order to survive. When he visited Sagamore Hill, the home of President Roosevelt in 1905 before leaving for Panama, his stories impressed TR so much, they hit it off, and enforced his hiring as Chief Engineer. They certainly had in common "The Strenuous Life".

    PAINT THE BRIDGE....?
The North Fork Bridge at Skykomish, (7:50), looks like it could do with some serious TLC.
It must surely be false economy in the long term to neglect painting bridges such as this. With rainfall at the levels they are in The Cascades, metal stuff going rusty must be pretty much the norm.
This bridge will be good old fashioned American Steel.....so of a quality not around these days.
Here in the UK The Forth Bridge, carrying the railway north over the Firth of Forth, north of Edinburgh in Scotland, was always painted on a regular basis to protect it from corrosion. The standard line that almost every schoolboy knew growing up was that when they reached the end of painting the bridge they then started all over again at the other end.
Some years back they decided that the bridge could be given a 'maintenance holiday' for a while, which was obviously a money-saving exercise.
The wiser and seasoned workers, who worked on the bridge, (whose fathers and grandfathers had also worked on it), said this would be a false ecomony, but they were ignored.
An so it came to pass that the years of neglect resulted in the bridge needing very extensive....and expensive.....repairs. We have now been told that the special paint now covering it will protect it for decades. Granted The Forth Bridge is in a more corrosive environment, (salty sea air), something which the North Fork Bridge is not, but the principle of protecting steel from corrosion by painting it remains the same.
    James Hennighan
    Yorkshire, England
    P.S.
As for The Forth Bridge being protected for decades with its new coats of paint....?
Well, we'll just have to wait and see if that happens.
Presuming, of course, that we all live long enough...
