I'm a school psychology intern at George Mason University (when filmed). Don't forget to like and subscribe, and feel free to leave a comment below! Thanks for watching :)
I’m hoping my experience as a middle school teacher helps me stand out as an applicant 🤞🏽
I honestly wish I had teaching experience because it helps you work with teachers and get their buy in
I'm a recent college grad, recently got interested in pursuing school psychology, and I just got a job as a substitute teacher :) this video came up at the right time for me!
That’s amazing!! I can’t imagine how much harder things are with COVID. Good luck with the app process 🙌🏻
Awesome tips!!
Tiffany thank you so much for your informative videos on this field! I have been working as a SPED aid I work with the kids I teach them, work with SPED teachers, OT, Speech & work to meet the kids IEP goal and give updates to teachers about how they are doing on their goals. I feel I am so ready to apply to grad school programs the only thing that has been discouraging is the GRE & the burn out of having to study for that test especially since testing center are closed and at home it can be hard with so much going on. Hoping it works out in the end :)
Hey Andrea! I heard many schools are waiving the GRE this year and hopefully more in the future! Right now it's mostly due to COVID but I think people are realizing that standardized tests don't provide a lot of meaningful information about candidates (and they're basically there to make money). Feel free to reach out on instagram if you have any questions and best of luck with applications!
Thank you so much for this video! It was exactly what I needed. I just got a job as an ABA instructor and it's a lot to take in. Hopefully, I get a chance to work in the other fields that you mentioned!
Hey Tram! That's awesome! I was always overwhelmed and exhausted as an ABA therapist but I learned a lot from the job and training.
Thank you for this video! Recently had a grad school interview for an MA in School&Community Psych program and am anxiously waiting results. I was an ABA tech for 2 years and have been a parapro in an ECSE classroom for a little over a year now. This video gave me confidence and I’m hoping for the best!
yay!! I wish you the best 👏🏻👏🏻 YOU GOT THIS!
Would love to hear your ABA tea! I’ve heard some negative things about the practice but I’ve also heard it’s good experience for psych students
oooh yes I would love to make a video on this! There are lots of pros and cons
What a helpful, informative video, as always! As a college grad trying to decide between clinical and school psychology, I have been aiming to gain professional experience in each area to assist me in this decision-making process. I find your videos also help a bunch and further increase my interest in school psych! This one in particular is great as I consider different pre-grad-school career options. Thank you, Tiffany! ☺️✨
Getting experience in each field is such a great idea! Thanks for the feedback and kind words 💛
I just applied to my three school psychology grad programs this past week in California. I'm hoping for interviews next month :)
woohooo! good luck :D
I work in education. I love it. I hate too at some points, but overall, I am proud of what I do. I will begin my masters program soring 2025, psychology.
The epitome of beauty and brains! 🤩
Please!! You are going to get so far in life, Dr 😊
The A-ARON clip 😭😂😂😂😂 such a good informative video! In the process of applying to school psych programs and this definitely helps out! 🙏🏽 thank you so much! Also I’ve also wanted to ask, do you plan on eventually pursuing a PhD in school psych? Or becoming an LEP? They’re just some thoughts since there’s so much you can do with school psychology besides being a practitioner. Love your videos! 💖
Thank you! 🥰 I've always considered pursuing a PhD but I want to get a few years of work under my belt before making a decision. I'm also considering becoming an LPC since I can open a private practice that way too.
That intro actually made me laugh out loud!
lol thanks! she wasn't listening at all
That didn’t even dawn on me before! substitute teaching does feel like it would be a good way to get experience
i feel like it's one of those jobs that's tough but easy. we should try it someday :D
Yes! I'm going to be babysitting my autistic cousin next year :D I'm also getting research experience.
yay!! Both are great opportunities to learn and build your resume!
I'm planning on teaching English in Japan as a gap year before going to grad school, so I hope that helps my resume as well haha.
that would be such a cool experience!!
I want to get experience in the field before I finish my BA but options are currently limited because of COVID, but I’d like to know more about the ABA therapy field, I’ve found multiple opportunities and I wonder if I should apply, so if you do a video on the topic I would very much appreciate it 🤍 I’ve been binge watching all your videos since I became interested in becoming a school psychologist, much love!
Aw thank you!! I would love to make a more in-depth video on ABA. There's a lot of pros and cons of the job. I can't imagine how difficult it is to gain experiences during covid but I hope universities are more understanding of the lack of opportunities and consider what you were able to do at home and pre-covid
Hi Tiffany! I love your videos and you helped me realize I want to go into school psychology. This year I am taking a course that allows me to work alongside an intervention specialist as her “shadow”. Would that be something that would help me stand out? I’m so nervous about applying here soon 🥺
Yes, that sounds like amazing experience! We definitely need to be knowledgeable about interventions and data collection.
I have four years of customer service and community empowerment experience. I don’t have like actual experience working with groups of kids but i do tutor my little sister who’s in elementary school.
I honestly think customer service and retail experience is so important for building essential soft skills for the field! If you can get some experience working with children before applying, that would make you even more competitive
@@TiffanyLee thank you, your videos are great. I’m definitely going to find some more experience i have until next summer. Gives me enough time to boost my skills.
I want the ABA tea!! like if you agree!
Hi Tiffany! I love your videos. I have my first grad school interview on Friday and I have no idea to expect. Any tips??
Hey Sabrina! Congrats on the interview!! I would love to make a video with some interview tips. I highly recommend doing some research about the program and faculty (research interests, focus of the program, etc) and practicing interview questions. They usually ask what you know about the field and why you want to pursue it. They'll also ask a slew of questions about yourself (strengths and weaknesses, experiences working with kids, how you deal with conflict, etc). Make sure you come with questions to ask and just be yourself! You're already qualified if they called you for an interview and they probably want to see if you're a good fit with their program. Hope this helps!
@@TiffanyLee That helps a ton! Thank you so much :)
I majored in social work and currently work in the field. I am wondering if you think this is good enough experience mixed with some volunteering with children in CASA program. Thanks!
Do you think it’d be ok to work as a sub during the first two years of school psych grad school since most classes are in the evening or is that too much to take on? I’m trying to think about feasible jobs I could work that wouldn’t interfere with classes!
I think it's definitely manageable if your classes are in the evening. You can always try it out your first semester and adjust your workload moving forward. One of my classmates was a sub throughout grad school!
Hi Tiffany! I’m a prospective GMU School Psychology student and I would love some tips on getting into the program! Would love to get your input and ask you some questions!
Hey! That's super exciting :D i would love to connect so feel free to dm me on instagram @ schoolpsychtiffany. They have a wonderful program with a lot of hands on training and a clinic
Hello, I'm a 3rd-year psychology student and wanted to work in Aba to gain experience but what would you say are the cons of that? I've heard a lot of negative and positive things about aba? Would be cool to hear more about it :)
i'm hesitant to make a video on this topic since it's a bit controversial but i've had several people ask the same question. I'll definitely get working!
Hi, Tiffany! What are chances of getting into a school psych program, if you know, if my bachelor’s had nothing to do with psych? (English writing, to be exact 😬)
I think it's great to have a diverse range of experiences! I would just make sure you meet all of the prerequisites before applying to the program (check their website or reach out to their program director)
Do you have any advice for finding experience during COVID? I am worried for this generation of college students who are unable to find internships/work to supplement their education because of this new COVID lifestyle :/
I can't imagine how difficult this time is for you. While there are some opportunities available in person (daycare/preschool/babysitting), they're still limited and put your health in jeopardy. You could look for online opportunities tutoring, helping a hotline, or substitute teaching but it's definitely not the same as in-person experience. My hope is that universities will understand the lack of opportunities in your generation so it doesn't hurt your application.
I have 3 years working with autistic children and a year working as an after school teacher. I have a low GPA 3.0 with a BA in Communications. What would you say my chances are getting into a program?
It sounds like you have great experience! I think your chances also depend on which programs you apply to and your personal statement. I have heard of students getting into programs with a low GPA and bachelors outside of psychology so it's definitely possible. I would reach out to faculty in the programs you're interested in to see if there are any other requirements you need to fulfill (perhaps courses in psychology) to prep for applications. Good luck!
@@TiffanyLee thank you :) I love your videos btw!
My mom is a preschool teacher and I've volunteers and helped her out is that ok to add ?
Yes I think that’s great! I worked for my parent’s private school for a few years and got to interact with children, teachers, and families
