Comparing the Pathfinder Tarp to the Free Soldier Tarp

I have a Pathfinder tarp as well as 2 3x3 and one 3x4 tarp. They each have their uses and strong points. The Pathfinder works great with the Pathfinder hammock and provides adequate coverage and is also suitable for long range backpacking because it's so light. My other tarps certainly provide more room and coverage and I'd take one of them on a shorter trip. Free Soldier is a reasonable tarp for the price, also.

I was hoping to find a lighter weight tarp than the Free Soldier, I have the 126" x118" in my cart on Amazon, its rated at 2500mm PU coated and 2.6lbs. I also looking at the Kalinco 10 x 10 with 3000mm PU coating, its cheaper and lighter than the Free Soldier at 1.8lbs vs 2.6lbs but seems to have the better specs on the coating if my info isn't misunderstood on how coating work...(i.e. higher the number better the water proofing is)

I just had my free soldier shred in a gust of wind after 10 weeks set up as a sun shade. I don't think it's much better than the $20 fabric tarps other than probably more tie out points. If i set my tarp up with bungie cord it may have faired better.

I wouldn't have anything Pathfinder branded because so much of if comes from China. The free soldier I believe is made in Osaka Japan. It's not American made but it's not China either.

Nice video - Planning with the 8x8 Pathfinder tarp will prevent predicaments, it has it's purposes however a fully enclosed shelter may not be a strong point with this tarp - The free Soldier offers roomier options.
