If you inhale enough lead smoke, you'll remain a guitar tech for life. I'm proof! :) The Weller I've been using since 77 just finally died. I can't get myself to pay the big bucks for a new one, and yet I can't be without it. Guess I'll just buy one of those batt operated Cold Solder toys or use wax candle drippings for solder connections. Cool vid!
Very good tutorial. It does take some practice. I still have difficulty prepping wires correctly because the solder doesn't stick to them(mainly on pickup wires), maybe I'm just using crappy solder?
I understand you "prepping" the end if the wire, cos it's twisted core; but what could you possibly need to do to prep the terminal? You seem to have too much solder on there too.
You should never touch the tip to the solder. It takes a long time to be able to solder efficiently and correctly. You want a very shiny volcano shaped joint. If it's dull looking or looks like a bubble or glob, it's bad. Tin the tip with solder then dab as much as you can off with the sponge. It should take 1-3 seconds to get a good solder flow, no more.
is this video for me. my wires from inside that connects to the pick ups i think ripped its a red one im not sure how it is suppost to be if theres a video for that tell me what it is idk if i shud duck tape it
"sod" being what he is.... hey anyone interested in making their leads solid as a rock at the ends. dip the newly cut and twisted lead in resin before soldering, then the solder goes right up the lead itself making it stronger. make sure you dont melt the wires inside though!
I took my guitar to the shop for a short in my input jack and the guy couldn't fix it he mostly dealt with acoustics guitars, but when i got it back you couldn't hear the short as bad, but now the signal sounds squashed and lifeless like i have a dead battery in it, but the battery is new. I'v tried a couple already. I guess ill get someone to fix it but i cant figure out what went wrong. The guys not around to ask anymore I dont know what he did or didn't do.
nice video but where was the close ups kind of pointless in the video saying do you see that... well no i don't because its so far away. 3/5 basics covered anyway :)
The problem is that you are wrong, you cant say that.. that was the first thing you got in mind to say.. you dont even think of what youre going to say.. you just say things without knowing someone can be hurt.. you 1st world people just dont think enough.. and we 3rd world people, we have to be strong and stand all the shit governments.. we try.. you know.. New Zealand and Nicaragua....
Keep what up, you do realise that my comment was made 5 years ago right ? I never swore or anything like that nor have i made any comments to you in that way. I said without hearing the amp in context it's bit pointless but i even said i liked your review didn't i ? You know i am a fan of randall amps and i've never been to your channel before that if you had taken my comment for what it was and not made it in to a personal attack i would have talked to you about it but you're a bully yourself.
Does the guy keep saying 'Sodder'?? lol or is it just an American thing? Keeps on talking bout his sodder... he's gonna sodder some people this evening...lol seems a bit wrong..
What the hell is wrong with you people? This is a video about soldering guitar parts. Good grief, get a life! There, the official position from Canada, hahaha
look, you need to chill out because your way to creepy now, I am sorry if you were offended by my comment but it was not my intention to harm your feeling. Please stop following me in different video's and abusing me.
I liked how you made your point AND asserted your superiority with foul language. Kudos!
Thabk you for that. This is stuff that every guitarist / Audio engineer should know.
Rock on
Kitch
excellent video! now im not too afraid to solder a new pickup
Excellent video, very useful indeed.

that was a really helpful video man thanks.
wow, this helped alot, i wanted to fix my guitar and didn't know how to solder until i saw this vid. how much are solder irons?
thnx alot for the vid dude i really didnt know what i was doing till now thnx =D
@ralfcaetano maybe your solder is too thick in diameter. Get the really tiny stuff, melts faster.
you need a wiring diagram for the pickups your soldering. It should come with the pickups you bought. If not, you can find one online.
@guitarpornographer fair enough :) darn a pickup change is gonna suck then

heat sink? i am about to go out now and buy a soldering iron with some rosin , since my guitar has a few loosies!
what tool is used when you rip of the rubber off the cable, but not the cable. where you just rip off the rubber off, whats it called?¿
thats cool man, we should do shit like that here. unfortunately i think if we kept sayin sodder in tech lessons or at work we'd get beaten
USE A FAN- SOLDER CONTAINS LEAD and Rosin- save those brain cells for the parties. PS. Thank you. helpful
is it possible to just splice the old wire with the new one? or does that make a bad sound in the speakers and pickups?

"sodder" LOL!!! Great.

can anyone out there tell me why after half an hour of heating up the iron i couldn't melt solder?
when did you solder up the iron??
Also, it's "serious" and "when".
what if i use 60 % lead and 40% tin, does it matter?
Why did you never play that amp by the way ?
like me! thanks for the vid, poster

You know he's pronouncing it correctly, right? The L is silent.
say solder again please???
yea man i see this happening everywhere, its pathetic
cos he's american... they say it like "sodder" for some reason.. even though nobody else in the entire world does.
yes get good strippers.... xD
IT'S SOLER NOT SODDER!
I never ridiculed anyone's playing or equipment, are you sure you've not muddled me up with someone else or are you just making stuff up now ?
Maybe American, but NOT English! lol
Keep what up, you do realise that my comment was made 5 years ago right ?

That's how it's pronounced. Learn English.
