Dance music was very niche in the US in the 90s and moderately successful in the 80s. It was biggest in the 70s until disco died at the end of the decade. Even though House and Techno music were created in the 1980s by Black people in Chicago and Detroit, respectively, they never went mainstream in the US but became huge in Western Europe in the late 80s and in Japan and Australia in the 90s.
It took until Skrillex in 2010 for the US mainstream to start paying attention to electronic music! Around the same time the US stopped paying attention to rock music, with hard rock and metal completely falling off in popularity since TV networks like MTV no longer introduced audiences to bands. Since the mid 2010s it's just pop, generic R&B, generic Hip-Hop and generic EDM that reigns supreme. Since most popular hard rock bands were from the US, it's decline at home led to a decline in popularity globally. However, EDM because of its less reliance on language is much more diversified globally and has a huge audience with their own ecosystem of festivals and clubs with big crowds.

To this date, I have never seen a UA-cam Channel tackle a Kelly Rowland story so intricately detailed, researched backed, and NOT based in the idol worship of Beyonce. Bravo! and Thank you! I often wonder if something traumatic happened to her during her "forgotten dance era". Maybe her abusive relationship was precisely during this time even though it feels like It might have happened when she was much younger. I only say this because she's said at one point dance music was a "beautiful mistake". The collaboration with Amorphous and Crazy are the closest she's returned to the sound. It's unfortunate because a lot of critics agree that she really shines as a dance diva. Now that Beyonce has released pure dance/house music, the comparisons will surely persist if she picks up the dance sound again.

Kelly Rowland dance era was huge here in Mexico! all of the clubs and parties here played When Love Takes Over or Commander back in early 2010's, she is kinf of like the Donna Summer of our generation!

Kelly’s dance hits were huge here in Australia and I remember how disappointed I was when the redux/ re-issue of Ms. Kelly shied away from these hits & mixes (for a while there I collected the maxi-singles & CD remixes they were so good). And I’ve loved her work both before & after this era, but there was something so accomplished & unique about the sounds, beats & collabs she was putting out. Ms. Kelly could easily have been as big as Madonna’s Confessions on a Dance Floor if the whole record had gone dance/pop at the very least internationally. I think the mash up of styles didn’t help gain it universal traction and the momentum was lost. Thanks for this deep dive, Ms. Rowland deserves all the flowers. 💐

I worked in retail on South Beach in 2010 and I definitely remember her music being played in our art gallery heavy! During that time EDM was huge in South Florida and pretty much everywhere but I'm happy for Kelly, she's forever that girl, stays classy and I loved seeing her on The Voice!

Its obvious that the reason Kelly’s label gave her a hard time with euro music it’s because of her race. It’s so stupid! Kelly did a perfect decision by pairing with David on making europop music despite her race!!! We love you Kelly!! We support you always!!! Your europop music slaps!!! Thank you David for giving Kelly that chance to show her talent!!! You clearly have a good ear to hear talent!

Yaaas she ruled Europe! I think it’s cuz over there, they don’t have that crazy Beyhive mentality so Kelly was able to flourish. I still remember her song with Tiziano Ferro and I have it on my iTunes library.

I’m so happy to see Kelly get her flowers and shine. During this era I was just starting high school and I really loved Kelly. She was also my favorite Destiny’s child member. While the talent is there definitely colorism and a lack of promotion got in the way of her career blowing up. During this era everything was becoming digital 2010’s +. I just want to say Kelly can truly do anything any lane she steps in she is that GIRL!
Also during 2008-2010 the Europe and other global sounds were in! I remember discovering new music on DatPiff, Other music blogs. David Guetta was in his BAG.
Lastly, Kelly’s last 2 albums “Talk a Good Game” and “Here I Am” are one of the best work of art albums I’ve heard in early 2010’s from a female artist. Like the way she captivated production she ate on Talk a Good Game. I miss her house/ EDM era we just need Miss Kelly back ♥️👏🏾👏🏾

I discovered Kelly’s EDM era in EARLY 2020… Now I have a lot more songs to get into thanks to BFTV.
I hope Kelly does get her flowers. She’s very talented, and if she stayed in Europe creating EDM, euro dancepop music, she would really be at THE TOP!! You don’t have to stay in America to be successful. Colorism from the music industry (as well as the black community not being supportive of other black people doing things outside of our stereotype) is what failed her. But since Kelly is acting more now, I do hope she gets a big break in that industry, maybe as Donna Summers whenever they make that movie.

Before I even watch this, I just wanna say, I was hyping her dance music to anyone who would listen. Commander, What a Feeling, When Love Takes Over, Forever and a DAAAAAY… YES. I was hoping for a full album of that sound; that was my favorite Kelly era

People were mad at her that she had found her own lane and she was not down and out and giving up and I think that.
that was the part she had found it so they had to sabotage at every event and every moment, but the important thing is that she found her lane and people could never take that away from her

I have to revisit her dance era... But her first album, Simply Deep?!!!!!?! It's on replay while I'm at work on a regular. Back to front, it was dope. That was truly her sound... That rock soul type... whew. I love Kelly so much.

Loved Kelly Rowland’s dance, Euro era still do!! “When Love Takes Over” “Commander” “What a feeling” “Forever In A Day” are still bangers to me.❤️✊🏽❤️This was a fantastic breakdown, I still remember dancing even on the dance floors to Kelly’s dance hits as they are and were huge in the gay clubs and EDM particularly environments. 🤘🏾💜🤘🏾
