Idk if you still check out the comments, but this video changed my whole perspective. The amazing recording and incredible complexity of the harmony really opened my eyes on Wagner and this prelude. I felt like I discovered a whole new color 😅
I actually still check my comment sections, so thank you very much for your catch! I'm glad to hear that this analysis contributes to some eye opening moments, as it was for me.
I wish I had thought to do this when I was teaching advanced music theory courses. Basso continuo of "Tristan und Isolde". 😈 (It's a very interesting way to approach the harmonic analysis of the piece, but Lord have mercy! what it would do to the brain of someone trying to realize the figured bass!) Next: a figured bass harmonic analysis of Schoenberg's "Pelleas und Melisande"!
Clarification: 0:15 'augm2 augm4 augm6 chord over the 6th scale degree of a minor scale' would be a more accurate way of describing the Tristan chord. You can see it in its second appearance 0:41 where it is figured 2-4-6# but the 2 and the 4 are augmented anyway since the accidentals of the piece.
