Blackfeet vs Lewis & Clark: What REALLY Happened?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 кві 2024
- In July of 1806, Captain Meriwether Lewis and three of his companions had a violent confrontation with the Blackfeet, resulting in at least one dead warrior. This encounter would lead to strained relations between the United States and the Blackfeet Confederacy and result in decades of bloodshed. But is the official story - as told by the Corps of Discovery - indeed what occurred? The Blackfeet don’t think so! Also discussed is the re-crossing of the Bitterroot Mountains, the splitting up of command, and the curious pronunciation of the Marias River. This is part 5 in the series on Lewis and Clark-links below for the previous four installments. #wildwest #history #western

Good stuff. I'm a Connecticut Yankee, my first love brought me to Dallas. Arrived Christmas Eve '75. Things didn't didn't work out. Hitchhiked Amarillo to Dallas my 21st birthday. 69 today April 11. Love Texas, you ain't bad at all. And I'm drunk and going to sleep now. Thanks for it all
Sounds like a good night
Did you mean to make that last part rhyme?
@jamess3241 not really a rhyme, just the same word used again.
Yes, it’s not a rhyme, I don’t know what it is. We could make a word up like.”repeatafaire’”. That sounds French and intelligent. Neither of which I am. But very good story as far as the podcast. There’s three good podcast on the old West of course this is one of them if you want to know the other two I will tell you, one of them is under black barrel, the other is wild West faces. I would hate to have to choose my favorite but time does seem to fly on this podcast unfortunately. Happy birthday buddy us April boys, men I mean, are special people too bad the women never figured that out.
Texas is a high quality place. I've moved away from Texas and nothing compares
Easily the best story teller on YT, it's a very high bar you've set, keep it up.
You should check mr.ballen out, just my opinion but he would be the one of the best story tellers I've heard.
@@kangawallafox7 I've heard him, and he's ok. But I find him a little over dramatic and on at least one UK story his facts have been dubious. At least Josh tells you he has no clear idea, plus I like his dry humour.
@rialobran that's alright just thought I'd recommend anyways.☺️
Short but great. Thanks for another entertaining and informative episode.
Glad you enjoyed it
Short and sweet, but quite an interesting one! Thanks Josh, I've truly enjoyed this particular series.
Glad to hear it! One more installment next week
Digging up supplies after a year impressive when you look at the vast amount of land covered. HeckI l loose my key inside a small kitchen. Great series !
Same
Best series ever
Thank you
I’m a Montana local and it’s the Maria’s river 😝 just drove this whole route on Monday and Tuesday. Had to bomb from Kalispell to Great Falls. As in Maria the Latina 😉
Another classic I'm sure
Hey boss man, haven’t commented in a while… I know, for shame… I’m still here brother. Awesome series. If you need a coffee hit me up and keep up the great work.
For anyone interested in such things, the story of Lewis' demise on The Natchez Trace in Tennessee is full of the proverbial intrigue. Suicide or foul play ?
I'm torn on that question. I would agree with Clay Jenkinson's book "The Character of Meriwether Lewis" but am open to other ideas as well.
Enjoy all of your episodes. Typically listen to them when I’m on long drives. Just drove from Birmingham to St. Louis and I listened to I think four or maybe five on the way up. Been doing this for several years now. 👍👍
Nicccce. Thank you!
Hi Josh
I only just cracked onto your channel and I love your work mate!
Really interesting stories, and your voice over makes it so much more authentic rather than some dead head monotone drivel!
Keep up the great work bro, cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤😊
Thanks Michael
Do yourself a favor and go back to the start of this series. Quite enjoyable! Wishing no disrespect, may I suggest you "blow the froth off a few" and settle in for a great entertainment. Greetings from the Ozarks.
Thanks for your comment mate.
Totally fascinated with American history despite the somewhat dark chapters that are buried in the past, and need to be told to the new generations.
We have our own sordid tales of internal conflicts with Australia’s original land owners as well.
Cheers man
Viva Wild West Extravaganza🎉🎉
Josh you rock brother,🙏🏴☠️🍁awesome series
You rock
Love it my man. Keep up the good work.
Appreciate it!
Thank You for another very enjoyable episode Josh. If i am to speculate, the way that the ignorant arrogant white man acted during those days, the encounter was with the eight warriors.
Not understanding how the indigenous viewed property rights led to almost every misunderstanding between the races. Best Wishes to You and Your Family.
Blackfoot were violent
Correction. Blackfeet.
Train train Song by the black Feet. Also one of Lynyrd Skynyrds earlier bands. They were scrappers ! Unlike give me 3 steps master when the water hits the floor.
And when the water hits the floor? And I’m tellin’ you, son. Well it aint no fun. Staring straight down a .44. Poor Linda Lou.

Great story
Many thanks
Let’s go!!!!!! 🔥
Let’s go
At the time, having a romantic interest in a cousin wasn't seen as it is now. Cousins married fairly often, though perhaps not as often as some now claim.
Another great narration! Thanks.
Thanks for listening
Great telling of their adventure.
Thanks. Final installment tonight
Hey Josh how u doing brother
Awesome, you?
@WildWestExtravaganza better now lol
I believe if there was a white Canadian man in the Blackfoot camp it was Probably Dave Thompson. He explored the area of what is now northern Idaho and Western Montana around the same time as Lewis and Clark.
The surveyor?
@@RogueReplicant presumably yes. He established several trading posts in the area, Thompson Falls Montana is named after him. There seems to be an excessive number of David Thompsons throughout history.
My family homestead is in Thompson Falls.
We're Austrian stock, but it's beautiful country.
Very odd that this video randomly popped up in my feed as I am reading a book about this exact expedition right now. I mean this exact situation. Bizarre.
UA-cam be spying
@@WildWestExtravaganza I know right? That what is feels like. Haha
Dead men tell no tales. So of it was only two youngsters, how were the blackfeet able to get so much detail about the encounter since both died?
Hello, sir. I am thoroughly enjoying this servies as much as the series on John Wessley Hardin. I would like to hear a series, if you will, on Alvar Nuñez Cabeza DeVaca. We learned about his travels throughout the SW in the 2nd grade, then once more in 7th grade Texas History. In Texas, we first learn Texas History before US history. Anyway, his manuscript entitled ADVENTURERS INTO THE UNEXPLORED INTERIOR OF AMERICA details his journey. Just a thought. Anyway, keep up the great work. God bless you and God bless Texas.
I’d love to cover de Vaca one day
I love hearing about this expedition, especially thinking that Chris Farley and Matthew Perry actually beat them to the Pacific.
Suggestion, watch "Almost Heros" a great historical documentary.
Ha ha
Good show!
Thanks!
Good to see you, amigo!
You too!
That Blackfoot looks a little black? My GM said she was Blackfoot..hmmmm?
Something in the wood pile
Interesting channel here I've found! Ever look into what Sgt.Floyd of this #LewisAndClark expedition was up to on this journey?
I live in North Dakota and have been to the confluence many times paddle fishing. Its pretty cool knowing ive been where they met back up and i snagged some hugh paddlefish there close to 100 pounds. I love your channel such great crazy stuff from back in the day. Thanks for the storys.
Lot of history there
Nailed it.
Great video. You know it didn't make much sense to make sure to leave proof of who killed the 2 blackfeet then run fast as possible to get away. Why leave the proof? I also know none of us has the answer. Love your videos. Always waiting on the next
They were mad, ego.
Beaver-Head county... 🤔
Now that sounds like that could be quite the interesting place ...
😉 😏

Woho !
I know a man that stopped in browning ,Mt to get fuel with his family , He said the locals surrounded them and stared in the vehicle. He said he wished he had his pistol it was that bad.
never trust em
Some tribes had young men steal horses to prove their manhood. Not surprising Lewis and his companions would have that story.
Pomo Indian straight outta Robinson Rancheria
Man dance. There was a bar in Rehoboth called that.
Woohoo!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
How is your spanish going along?
Asi asi
Why does he look like Boosie?
Totally him.
Lewis and Clark, fine Virginia gentleman.
Well shit…..I somehow missed the one before this lol hold my spot Josh back in 24:21! Byeeeeeee
And…..we’re back 🤣
One small favor to ask Josh…..😂 can you bring back the rolling R’s….kinda pumps ya up based on how exciting the intro is 😂
I’ll try!
Why in Hell would Lewis lie about the Blackfoot encounter? Casually murder two Indian kids just for kicks, putting the entire expedition in grave peril? Even doubting his story is the pinnacle of stupidity.
Is it really the pinnacle of stupidity?
“Ads?” No. “Ass?” Definitely. Whether it’s being shot at, or mumbled about next to her river, in Lewis’ sleep...🤪
I’m disappointed that you value the information written by Steven Ambrose. He did a rather sloppy job in this endeavor and several others. Read “First Across The Continent for a more accurate source. The book will help you.

Jack, I disappoint myself on a near daily basis
I just cant figure why they couldn't hunt their own meals. 😮 not a fan of Clark😊oh, my 3rd time thru this🎉
Tell the truth and get stung up. Plead the fifth.
