#10. I was a power house of a woman through my mid thirties. A single mom, a degree in engineering, a great career earning great money, physically fit, and capable of doing all the things.... by myself. I met my husband at 36 (I'm 45 now). A real 'man's man'. If it exists, he can fix it. If it doesn't exist, he can make it. If it needs to be done, he will do it. I was able to do all the things, but I never realized the weight of everything I carried on my own until I had a capable man. Yes, i can fix the tractor.... but I'd rather be in the greenhouses growing our food or in the kitchen preserving it, etc. It's made my life so much...... more. In every way.
I will add, though, it's important for me to know the things my husband handles in case he isn't home or sick etc. I am 100% able to handle our generators, solar well pump, solar home system, fix the trucks and heavy equipment, operate the heavy equipment, do the butchering. If there's something I don't know, he always makes me learn it when he performs the task just in case he's not there one day.
I was 40 when I met my husband. He was 36. (We became friends during the pandemic. Friends for 8 months and then starting dating) We were married last summer. (June 2023) My first marriage. And last. I’m 44 now. I was in two different long term relationships in my 20’s and 30’s. But when I met him, my life change and it all made sense. But prior to him and this current life, I was solo and independent. Yes, even during the other relationships. I’ve always lived alone. Had my own home. I never lived with a man. I never had another man’s money or depending on it I should say. It was my income and my income alone. My husband is totally your husband. His skills and hard work is endless. But the minute I had a man who could do this or that… and even for me… it was like whoa, what is this? Haha. He’s such a good man and partner. I still do many things on my own because I like to. I learned how to take care of a home and yard on my own all those 20+ years. Fast forward to life today, I got to leave my job of 22+ years that eventually led to stress and depression. I get to take of our 6 acres daily. Our home. Preparing a property and home of sustainability for he and I. (We don’t have kids. I wish we did though. 😔) Ive been a gardener for over 20 years and I used to garden on like half of an acre at my old home. Now I have 6ish acres. So you can imagine my joy and happiness. I have dreamed and yearned for this. I’m okay with not working. We live on his income solely. We took a financial hit by me leaving my job.. BUT… the happiness and the stress that went away is priceless. For BOTH of us. I didn’t like the woman I was when I was stressed and had so much anxiety from simply a job I was keeping just for a paycheck. The burden was lifted as soon as I walked away and came home… for good. I manage everything here and he can go work at his own business and currently expanding it. We’re both happy. I could have made it as single woman in so many ways. It’s all I knew for most of my adulthood until him. But man, life is so much better or fulfilled with a good man… a good hard working partner. He will tell you and still tells me… when you’re happy, im happy.🥰 Learning skills is important in this life. Learning them on your own. Learning from your partner. Knowing you can do many things yourself and having a partner for things you can’t or just picking up the shack when needed.
Absolutely #10! I spent my early teens and twenties with men who didn't have values of taking care of myself and our future family, I had a child with one, I was the one that held it all together, so I didn't believe you needed a man. Now I've married my wonderful husband and we have a 12 year old and a 7 week old bundle of joy together, he built our house with his own two hands, my father helped. My husband would take care of us in an emergency, I love that I can rely on him, he can rely on me to keep us fed and look after our children
I experienced Hurricane Helene first hand… 14 days no power in the Georgia heat. Gas lines were 3-5 hours long. Water was shut off for 2 days. We were NOT PREPARED!!!! Since then we’ve bought a generator and keep 60 gallons of gas on hand at all times. We will continue building our emergency stash thanks for all these ideas🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
Even if you don’t have a man in your life like me, prepare, learn to do stuff and God will watch out for you. He’s good at sending people and resources your way, even angels❤

I am Number 10 of 13 children. I enjoyed growing up in a big, catholic family. I am so thankful to my mother who raced me in my catholic faith. Now I have my own 2 daughter’s and 5 grandchildren. I feel blessed. I have stacked up on food for the last few years. Things are getting chaotic over here in Germany. Whoever doesn’t see the signs of the times now, God have mercy on them. Get your beeswax candles blessed! I would also recommend storing lots of BLESSED salt. I do the same with buying books for foraging and different skills. I’ve been always told to have a big dog and a little dog because the little dog is usually the yapper and sleeps lighter so they are the warning to set off the big dog. Great tips Steph!
Also if you can afford have the generator hooked up to the house…it makes it so much easier. At our farm we have lost power for a day here and there and we need it in our cold Canadian winters for our heated water troughs and so that pipes don’t burst
I absolutely love your videos sweet girl.. I'm a mother of 5 as well.. ages almost 20..almost 18..14..7..and almost 2.. Been married for 21 years and I live in the Sierra mountains of Ca.. very small country town...Mariposa.. And one thing I have learned being a stay home mama and homeschool mom..while my husband had been the full bread winner..is to take the time to learn what to do if your husband is not able.. to learn the process when the power is out and the steps for the generator to hook up to the whole house.. we deal with fires here every summer.. and lots of snow impact in the winter..and power is always out due to situations.. but my point being, to know the basics of where things are and what to do in many situations, your husband..being a hard working man that he is can get hurt at any given moment.. I pray this never happens of course, but reality is we get comfortable thinking that man will always be there.. so from experience, take the time to go over things with him..know what to do, and how to do it. We all feel this need to prepare in these days.. and through the grace of our Father above we have men who put in their all and while doing that anything can happen.. I pray you see the message I'm sharing..and just know this comes from love sweet girl!!!! Prepare yourself with your husband, so you have a piece of mind if anything was to happen.. may our heavenly Father bless you ...❤️❤️
Agree 💯! My hubby works very hard on our farm and he also works on town at least once a week and at home on his day job. He also travels occasionally for his day job and I have begun learning what I would need to do if he was unable to get back home asap! Or if he was hurt or even if everything went bad, he wouldn't have enough hours in the day to do all that needs done! That I need to learn how to do it as well.
When you can’t go to the store and can only relay on your pantry , Food goes faster than you think especially with kids! Practice going without the store you learn so much! Also make sure you have all the pans and supplies you need to prepare the food. I learned all this the hard way!
Even if you don’t smoke you can buy cheap cigarettes and vacuum seal them for barter in an emergency too. They’re a good barter tool in normal live too

We are working on getting a Generac put in within the next few weeks. Just looking at the homesteaders in NC that got hit hard, still had food and electricity because of their Generac. Praying for our nation!
I used to love in a tiny apartment so we had only what we needed for the week. A few years into living in our house with enough space, I'm finally ready to start stocking up. I'm slowly getting 1 more of everything we use that stores okay. And then 2 more... things that we go through faster im getting a couple more. I'm aiming for 6 months of all basic shelf stable ingredients which really means food for way longer since you don't use everything at once. We finally got our drop approved by azure standard last month but we couldn't get the minimum before the ship date so that was disappointing. Hopefully we can get it next month. Hello Steph, thank you so much for all these. We got also #5 in our home coz husband is a hunter and he's also my #10. I learned to have a prepper mindset because he is already one even when he was still single. He built a house from scratch when he was still single with help of professional carpenters but he knows all the installation etc (he's also an electrician), so, he fixes everything in our house. And he loves to invent things that we now laugh while looking at each other when he says "this is my last invention". Hehhe. And yes, he always tell me, too, to not worry coz he has things ready that I don't even know of. And one time I asked him to teach me what to do if I get a flat tire on the road and his reply cracked me up coz he said all I have to do is drive on the side of the road and dial his number. 😂😂Thank God for responsible and handy husbands!
I really want to save up for a generator, dried foods and dry up my sourdough starter for future use!! Also we just bought our 2yo daughter her first bed girl bed from Birch!! Tonight is the 2nd night with her sleeping on it after i cuddled her to bed. I hope she sleeps on it haha it was spendy! Lol but i know she will last awhile

We’ve got long term food from a company. It was enough to last our family of 8 for 6 months at 3 meals a day. It was not cheap but we bought chunks at a time over 4 years. Now our family is a family of 11….so canning is how I’m going to make up for the rest. Water supply is important too and often overlooked as well. ❤
Can you do something to show how you raise guardian dogs when they’re a puppy? Like what the process is for introducing them to livestock, where they sleep, how you feed them, etc? My goal is to live on a homestead in the near future but all I’ve ever known/trained are house dogs! 🤣
You need to get your pup from a breeder who trains them. A good breeder will help you learn what to do once you take your pup home. Our Great Pyranese stayed with his grandparents and parents for 10 months to be trained by them as to how to guard the livestock. When we brought him home, we basically kept him on leash around our animals at first and walked him the perimeter of our property several times a day for a few weeks. After that they are fairly self sufficient but a good breeder is a must and can really help you if you have any issues
I finally ditched my Berkey and went to an RO system after I read what the lawsuit against Berkey was about. These filters exchange one thing by releasing aluminum. I carry the Alz gene and I really am trying to dodge that. The RO system requires some yearly filter change but so does a gravity filter. Just something to think about.

Great video! Although I love milk cows for me personally, I feel like dairy goats would be a better survival animal. They are easier to feed, especially on a smaller property, and are so much easier to handle. Hopefully, I can get back into goats someday when we finally get our own land!
Nice plan but I would make sure I knew where the generator is and would learn how to use because what would happen if your Husband isn’t at home or something when disaster strikes and you have the kids to watch out for.

I just saw your woodstove picture and your wood piled up right next to the stove makes me sooo nervous. Those stoves can get soo hot and could make that wood combust. Please check into that.
Love how that looks! We heat our house with just wood. 3 years now doing this and it's possible. We got a Kitchen Queen (silly name, but I can cook on it, too)!
Do you have any tips on milking the cow as a mom with a baby? We have 1 jersey in milk and next year we should have 2 in milk at the same time, and as of now my husband is milking at 5am before work. The baby is usually nursing in bed with me at that time, and then it's up for me to get ready, prep breakfast and school, and then I do school until lunch with the big kids. My husband doesn't complain, but I know he'd appreciate it if I took over milking or at least helped when we have 2 in milk. The baby does NOT like to be in the back carrier while I do anything leaning over, so she'd just cry while milking, and my other kids aren't big enough to take baby while I milk. Any tips?

I’ve been trying to find berkey filters and haven’t had any luck. Do you know of any compatible filters that are just as good as the black berkey filters?

I really want to save up for a generator, dried foods and dry up my sourdough starter for future use!! Also we just bought our 2yo daughter her first bed girl bed from Birch!! Tonight is the 2nd night with her sleeping on it after i cuddled her to bed. I hope she sleeps on it haha it was spendy! Lol but i know she will last awhile

We’ve got long term food from a company. It was enough to last our family of 8 for 6 months at 3 meals a day. It was not cheap but we bought chunks at a time over 4 years. Now our family is a family of 11….so canning is how I’m going to make up for the rest. Water supply is important too and often overlooked as well. ❤
Can you do something to show how you raise guardian dogs when they’re a puppy? Like what the process is for introducing them to livestock, where they sleep, how you feed them, etc? My goal is to live on a homestead in the near future but all I’ve ever known/trained are house dogs! 🤣

You need to get your pup from a breeder who trains them. A good breeder will help you learn what to do once you take your pup home. Our Great Pyranese stayed with his grandparents and parents for 10 months to be trained by them as to how to guard the livestock. When we brought him home, we basically kept him on leash around our animals at first and walked him the perimeter of our property several times a day for a few weeks. After that they are fairly self sufficient but a good breeder is a must and can really help you if you have any issues

I finally ditched my Berkey and went to an RO system after I read what the lawsuit against Berkey was about.
These filters exchange one thing by releasing aluminum. I carry the Alz gene and I really am trying to dodge that. The RO system requires some yearly filter change but so does a gravity filter.
Just something to think about.

Great video! Although I love milk cows for me personally, I feel like dairy goats would be a better survival animal. They are easier to feed, especially on a smaller property, and are so much easier to handle. Hopefully, I can get back into goats someday when we finally get our own land!
Nice plan but I would make sure I knew where the generator is and would learn how to use because what would happen if your Husband isn’t at home or something when disaster strikes and you have the kids to watch out for.
Get a whole house generator if you possibly can, tied into the breaker box.

I just saw your woodstove picture and your wood piled up right next to the stove makes me sooo nervous. Those stoves can get soo hot and could make that wood combust. Please check into that.
Wood requires a spark/flame, not just heat. And it doesn’t “combust”.
Love how that looks! We heat our house with just wood. 3 years now doing this and it's possible. We got a Kitchen Queen (silly name, but I can cook on it, too)!
Do you have any tips on milking the cow as a mom with a baby? We have 1 jersey in milk and next year we should have 2 in milk at the same time, and as of now my husband is milking at 5am before work. The baby is usually nursing in bed with me at that time, and then it's up for me to get ready, prep breakfast and school, and then I do school until lunch with the big kids. My husband doesn't complain, but I know he'd appreciate it if I took over milking or at least helped when we have 2 in milk. The baby does NOT like to be in the back carrier while I do anything leaning over, so she'd just cry while milking, and my other kids aren't big enough to take baby while I milk. Any tips?

They say an acre per cow, but we have been dairy farmers for 15 years and you need more. Five for one cow, but rotation is key.
If you are strictly grass fed an acre isn’t enough but if you are able to supplement feed, you can get away with one cow on one acre.
