- In the deep south of the USA, African-Americans would often "line a hymn" during prayer service. This young lady does "A Charge to Keep I Have" with grace and anointing. The saints of yesteryear are rejoicing in the heavens!
~Bishop Eric Freeman
Hi, all! Thank you for the love! 🤍 I’m blessed to know that this video still resonates in your spirits. I sang this nearly 10 years ago at a state Baptist convention in Dublin, GA. I’m a Behavioral Therapist now in California. I don’t sing as much as I used to, but God is still good, and continues to show himself in my life daily.
Be blessed great people. 🤍
I stop and watch every time it appears on my time line.Powerful tribute to God.
I am from Ga. And my mother loves to watch your video at least once a week. She is currently in hospice care.
Sis! God bless you. I would love for you to sing in our virtual revival!
That's amazing. My grandfather the late Deacon Frank Ross Sr, and the Deacons at Zion Grove Baptist Church in Camilla, Georgia used to sing it when I little in Church 😊
When I was little 😊
Amen...suddenly, I am 5 years old leaning across my grandmother's lap while granddaddy kneeled with the deacons.
Yes suh! Knees bent and body bowed!!!!! 🙌🏾
When she said "It ain't no harm to moan and "It's getting late in the evening" It was ALL OVA for me. Praise God!!!!!!
👐🏾👐🏾👐🏾👐🏾👐🏾👐🏾
Whew!!!
Yes Lord Jesus 🙏😂🙏
It getting late in the evening the sun is going down!
This is all we had at one time. This will keep us still😢
This is all we still need
My God! This hymn is a soul-stirrer. If you don't feel something after hearing this hymn, I'm not sure what it will take for you to do so!
That baby is sanging that song she brought chills to my soul.
South Georgia thru and thru...that moan touched my spirit...♥️
Grew up in North FL right at the FL/GA line. We did this too.
Soul stirring old baptist SANGINGGGGGG
YESSSSSSS, LORD!!!
I am not religious, nor am I African American, but I could sit there and listen to this all day, truly amazing.
Red Mist not about religon but believing andfeeling the spirit
The Lord is calling you my brother, read Psalm 95. God bless and keep you,
When I was younger the power in these types of hymn would creep me out but now I find comfort in them.
Same here
That moan gave me chills...YES LORD !!!
+OUTFITRIDERS AMEN! AMEN! A precious heritage we should cultivate and pass down to all generations!
I've got chills to, Go ahead and praise him baby!!!!!!!
Word to the wise! Do NOT listen to this while at the gym😧. When she hit that " Aint no harm to moan", I came straight off the machine.
Me too!😁
@@Rajah817 listen I’m at work listening AGAIN IN 2021. And went slap in! I had a whole fit!!
This reminds of my childhood in the 70's, visiting my grandmother in SC at the church in the woods with no organ and no instruments. Just foot stomping and clapping making the beat. My great grandfather was a deacon and I remember him kneeling and praying and singing. They held revival meetings 6 weeks out of the summer and my cousins and I enjoyed every minute of it. Sometimes my grandmother would stay back at the house and we would still go. Us kids would come back home and sit on the back porch and have our own little service, singing the songs that we had learned. RIP Grandmother and Thank You
I'm about to clean out my cubicle listening to this..
Hope all is well with you.
Gregory Burns 😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Nothing but South Georgia!! Love to my hometown Thomasville.
Yes! Albany/Leesburg listening!! My Uncle sang this...OMG.!
yes sir Lord keep her & guide her protect her from all hurt harm & danger seen & unseen!!!
In Jesus Mighty Name... Amen
Yes Lord, in Jesus’ name!
Reminds me of when the Deacons use have the chairs lined across the alter and do devotion. Then that one deacon would knell and pray. Now we have praise and worship where a praise team sings all the new stuff. I have nothing against it. I'm just remembering my childhood back in the 90's
Donald Martin ...I pray we go back to this...the world is so lost...Lord help us....
Donald Martin chuurch
"modern" is often not better in many ways. This is art, tradition, passion, deep obedience and devotion. This is sublime harmony of a soul reaching out with all its existence to God.
Antonio Fleneury Lord please let us go back to these doctor watts humans these songs are what help led me to Christ Thank u Lord for coming up in Da south where we really had Church
Amen!!!
It's great to see she has learned a song that has been sung throughout so many years of our history. Clearly she is not only singing this great song but she understands the meaning too!
Hmmm??
I come to this video every time just to hear the ad libs from the lady in the back ground! 😮💨 My God!
This devotion brought tears to my eyes!!!! Praising God, remembering Mt Olive AME Zion #2, growing up in Greenville Al.... Glory to Your name God......
This just brought to tears it's following like a river...I feel the Lord all around me right now...
..
Stephanie Howton ,
AME zion for me too my Sister..... yes Lord
She took me to another level my great great grandmother taught me this song one of my very first
At one time THIS was all we had. But it took THIS to get us where we are Now.
Kelvin Parsons Yes... how soon we forget. This was all we had. No musicians, organs, pianos, or drummers. Just our beautiful voices and a will to praise our God! This brings me to tears!!! I’m so thankful for our heritage!!!
Kelvin Parsons amen, amen, amen, and amen again!!
"Getting Late In The Evening! The Sun Is Going Down." Gave me chills 🙏🏽
Yessssss, Lord!!!!
Let the church say, amen. We must keep it going.
Loved when she said "oh Lawd" sang it sang it!!
Ikr!😁
Amen! Amen and Amen!!!!!!
This is Black Excellence! The genius of a culture to transform "classical" and "formal" meter and cause it to serve the new function and performance. This is the basis of modern Black church performative "praise and worship". I felt my help coming on in this offering. My G-d!
A charge to keep I have,
A God to glorify,
A never-dying soul to save,
And fit it for the sky.
To serve the present age,
My calling to fulfill:
O may it all my powers engage
To do my Master’s will!
Arm me with jealous care,
As in Thy sight to live;
And O Thy servant, Lord, prepare
A strict account to give!
Help me to watch and pray,
And on Thyself rely,
Assured, if I my trust betray,
I shall for ever die.
Thank You! Sang this in church as a child but didn't know the entire thing.
Blckberi
I have never known this song had WORDS that came in the form of an actual song!!! Every time I have heard it sung “A calling to fulfill “ is the only part I ever heard. Now the stank with which it was “sankted” ,because “sung” wouldn’t even COVER the shivers up my spine every time it was done RIGHT, held back the words an I only got the feeling of the lord. Thank you so much!!!
Blckberi thank you for posting this hymn
Beautiful beyond measure. Thank you for these gifted words.
It's not a Sunday morning church service without "A Charge To Keep..." I know you know what I mean... lol
I know what you mean
Frfr 😭
Sound like REAL CHURCH time !!!
In from a small town in Georgia with a population of about 5,000 people. My uncle Bobby would sing this before praying at Mt. Pleasant. My God, My God.....let's have Church. This beautiful young lady brought back memories, she did that. Give God ALL THE GLORY!!!!!
I attended Mt Pleasant in Leesburg!
I attended Friendship Baptist Church Ft Myers FL, we were raised and sang these devotional hymns.
Baptists at it finest!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Makes me think about mama
The purity of her pleas. No show just delivering our plea
Imma truck driver and I love listening to this going down the road.. Keeps me near and keeps me grounded
This is definitely a powerful song and the delivery is excellent it saddens me that this one on one worship with the Lord seems to be fading away God bless you little sister in Christ.
This bring back good ole memories at my mother church China Grove Baptist Church. Edgefield Sc
Sang baby. This is how we roll down south
Not everyone because the church I go to don't sing hymns this way. They sing hymns but not this way. This is the way I was raised the same way she sings. I wish the church I go to would but they don't.
@@gwendolynrogers9616 I think she meant that this type of singing is typical in black southern old school baptist churches compared to churches in say New York or California. She didn't mean every church in the south does this. We know they don't sing like this in Catholic or Presbyterian churches even in the south.
I love hymns to be sang this way regardless of where you're from! She is singing from her soul and her voice is anointed!! Praise God!!
I REMEMBER MY
FAMILY TALKING
ABOUT THIS PIECE
BEFORE PRAY MEETING. THEN MY FAMILY WOULD
START TO HUMECTANT AND SING THEN
THE TEARS WOULD
FLOW
This total AWESOMENESS! Old school at its finest
Truly a song for the saving of souls in the name of Christ Jesus
praise Jesus. Now young people you all got to know these old songs now. Nothing wrong with some of the New stuff but don't forget your roots.
My Lord December 2023 and this just took meon a journey back to my roots Glory
Don't even know the little sista an I'm years late but I feel as proud as the brothas in the background...nothing more special to see the youth praising God and paying homage to the old style of the real church...I hope she doing even better and keep it going
All I know is...This young lady...like when I hear her I see a vision of..when she was 2, 3 and 4 years old telling her grandmother..Maw Maw I wanna sing like that..like how i see Paw Paw do every Sunday. Bc, see they know this baby was still a child and still like to play etc..but when comes to the Lord.. 🙏
..and listened to every word Studied it for a good while,.got it down pat.. She had let Moma and Grandma and PawvPaw hear her at 🏡..telling her " Allright now, if you wanna sing this and anything else? You gon have to kean it and DO it..this sing nothin to play wit..And so she Did! Now look at her. -Train upna child in the way he/ she should go.." in the admonition of the Lord 🙏
Those are some happy preachers back there! Amen though...
The church today has strayed away from hymns
which is why they can't reach no body.
Most definitely in these times 2021🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
This is they did it at my family church.Trinity Baptist Church, Tignall ,Georgia. Windows open and wooden floors and deacons praying. Moved your soul. Grandma rocking and moaning. Miss those days. Memories I will cherish forever
Wow this is my video recording
She did dat shit!
Dixie Mae was right here with me, singing and waving her hands to this...this young lady is AWESOME!!
Praise God Hallelujah she raised that hymn powerful
I hope that songs like this will never be for gotten , these type of songs is what i grew up listing too, and help made me the man that I am.
It's gettin late in the evening and the sun is goin down!
This is old churching. Brings back memories of old Primitive Baptist in the south.
Whewwww, brings back memories of my upbringing in the Baptist church!!!🙌🙌💟
Sing daughter of Zion!!!!
I play this so much, my neighbors probably be shouting!
🤣😂😁 Love it!!!!
I Don't Know How Many Times I've Watched This. Love 💕
This is amazing. I grew up in a church that lined hymns and in my 40+ years I've never seen a woman do it. It was always the older deacons (who were all men). This young lady did a great job!
That's why the gentleman are so excited.
Me neither...the sista nailed it just like the ol deacons
So black so powerful so from the root.
Ric o YOU BETTER SAY IT and SAY IT AGAIN!!!! So BLACK and POWERFUL!!!
Reminds me of Spring Grove Baptist church when the Late Rev. Tommy Scott was the leader and my grandmother would take her radio in, plug it up and record the entire service from start to finish and hymns were song just like this!! GAVE ME CHILLS!!
purtyladi77 my dad was chairman of the deacon board at Sims chapel cov. Ga. He did the same thing. And could raise the dead with this hymn...
The men behind her are in awe because in the south, usually the deacons lead this hymn and it holds so much power. So their minds are blown that such a young woman can sing this so powerfully.
They are in Georgia. A lot of the folks my age all grew up hearing these hymns in church lol. I never knew what they were saying as a kid so I just hummed
Still listening in 2021.
Chills
In tear Father... Bring back memories going to church with my great aunt!!!
This is powerful- Our greatest leaders are and are still to come- from the young people such as this young woman.
@Eric Freeman This is some POWERFUL prayer chanting-singing handed down from our forefathers and foremothers in slavery...coming straight from our ancient African heritage in our own churches and meeting houses...thanks for uploading this to the internet, so that the whole world, including our persecuted brothers and sisters in Jesus
Christ in various countries, scattered across the continents, CAN HEAR THIS AND TAKE COURAGE IN ALL THEIR TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS! Indeed, this is how our people
"got over" all the sadness and disappointments in their lives, and sang their souls to
HEAVEN! :-)
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!!! I watch this everyday. She did that!!
Yeah she did!!✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏽
Ohhhh gloryyyyy to Be to God
We need more of this songs in today's church and in own worlds
Sigh, Lord I miss the olden days...I can still hear them saints that have gone on to glory from Bethel AME Church - Pompano Beach, FL singing this in night prayer meeting. They'd sing or line a hymn and then kneel at the altar and send up some timber (prayers) like you never before, the walls would be filled with so much PRAISE until it seems like they were shaking (is just like fire)!! This is fading fast in the modern church, along with many of our traditions. And to say that we shouldn't look forward to new things but, lest we forget...and I'll just leave that right there. Y'all church folk know what I'm talking about when I say that lol.
YES!!! I love this! Sing, baby girl!!
Thank You Jesus for Old School, spirit moving gospel. Yes Sir, thank you ma'am 💖
This sent chills down my spine ! I remember this type of praise and worship back in the 80's and 90's....Tryde Stone Missionary Baptist Church...Cincinnati , Ohio. The late Overseer Anderson Culbreth was a true man of God and kept the old ways alive and well in the house of the Lord. The deacons led it through prayer and the congregation followed. When this happened the atmosphere was set for the Holy Spirit to come in and take charge. Church would last 3 or 4 hours easily lol. Lives were being changed and souls were being saved. Those were the days when church was church. It's been 20 years since I've heard praise and worship the old way. This new stuff doesn't move me at all. It's up to us to keep the old ways alive...
Dannte Eskew you ain’t never lied
Good morning Everyone!! I needed to hear this right now!!! Glory to GOD....PLEASE Pray for me 🙏🙏🙏💛
This reminds me of my childhood church Union Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY with Reverend A.A. Woods.. We had some great times in that Church, GOD IS GOOD,,,,,
This is what I grew up on in little Covington, Ga down at the Pleasant View Baptist Church!!!
I so wish more churches had this. This is the music that touches the soul.
Just seen this on facebook. That baby just...YES!
That's How it's Supp to Be Done!!
I thank God this type of devotion still exists where I'm from even tho it's very rare. Baby girl you wailed in the complete control of the spirit 🔥 let em use u!
I'm Muslim.... But wow is all I can say. This moved me.
Likewise, akhi.
Amen! One of my favorite devotional hymns!
I know JEHOVAH is smiling brought tears to my eyes remembering my upbringing in St . Luke Missionary Baptist Church . THIS NEED NOT TO BE LOST IN OUR GENERATIONS TO COME.

Wow that’s was amazing!!!! Well done young lady. Keep lifting up the name of the Lord!!! Songs of praise!!!!
If this doesn't take you back to week long revival service, I don't know what kind-of church you went to growing up! Yessir!!!!!
Love it! I grew up with the hymns. I miss this 🙌🎶💕
This takes me back to my days at Greater Morris Chapel with the late Dea. Nelson Sherman and back to Dixie Grove in Flatwood, Alabama with my granddaddy

Those was the good days in church wit my grandma and aunts and cuzn.
My grandfather, Willie B Kemp, loved this song. This is how church was growing up as a child in Warrenton, GA. I attended Thankful Baptist Church.
Come through old soul. Brings back memories.
Thank GOD for parents for raise this youth adult and teaching her the Father old time anointing hymn!!!!!!!! that on her life praise for the chapter Ephesians:1:5 and Isaiah:26:3 The Lord gives perfect peace to those whose faith is firm. bless up this family in GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Amen 🙏
EVERY TIME I watch this video or hear this song it reminds me that the prayers of my parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents and church families kept me. Even today I'm reminded it's my responsibility to pray to the ancestors and most high for others as those who have done it for me.
Omg!!! This is music to my soul!!! Young lady you did it best!!!
I can hear the great Rev. McNair lining this one up back at Bethel in Mt. Dora....Haleluajah
This is a masterpiece art form of gospel that must be maintaint at all costs. It is a treasure of faith and tradition.
