How America Almost Destroyed The Comic Book Industry

  • Comic books have been a staple of American pop culture for the better part of 90 years.
    The origin story of comics as we know them, however, is much more complicated. In the 1950s, a moral panic swept across the country - one in which parents and children burned comic books by the bushel in public gatherings - and led to the near destruction of the comic book industry.
    Comics were big business even by the 1940s. They reached millions of readers each week. And the superheroes created then have now become billion-dollar franchises, showcased in blockbuster films and massive conventions such as Comic-Con.
    Events in 1954, however, almost changed that. Laws were passed. Careers were ruined. And comics fell under a strict censorship regime that lasted for decades to come.

      My dad used to have an old saying: “If one person craps in their pants it doesn’t mean everybody has to wear a diaper!” I think most people look at comic books, violent movies, violent video games, etc. just for the entertainment value but there is ALWAYS going to be that one bad apple that spoils it for everyone and sadly in every case everyone has to pay in one form or another. It’s not right! The actions dictated by one person out of millions should not be a determiner of laws bestowed on everyone to have to begrudgingly follow!

      Other countries had and still have theire own comics industry, like France, Belgium, Italy, but the censorship problem and the blame for corrupting youth is not there.
      I think if there was a french of italian video games industry, it won't face that kind of accusations for the downfall of youth.
      So the real question is: What 's the secret behind that obsession for extrem violence in US pop culture ? I don't mean american video games or comics are the reason behind violence, it's rather the opposite. There's a serious problem in american psychology that should be addressed seriously. It's everywhere, from daily life to economy and foreign policy. Viceo games and comics, heavy metal or hip hop, all this is just the reflect of american subconsious mind.

    They are destroying the American comics as we speak. Take a look at Modern Marvel and DC. Their forced identity politics have resulted in extremely low sales, low quality comics, comic shops going out of business and a fanbase that would rather read manga instead.

    • @CAPS0L
      @CAPS0L 2 роки тому

      ABSOLUTELY WRONG. Western comic books have been increasing sales for over a decade and show no signs of slowing down. Quality is extremely high with today's creators (especially on the Indy side). Sure there are woke/PC comics out there for the anti-woke to get triggered over but if you look at the cream of the crop, good comics are going nowhere. Stop parroting the BS.

    • @ItachiUchiha-ut6xj
      @ItachiUchiha-ut6xj 2 роки тому

      @@CAPS0L hahahaha no, western comic sales have declined. There is only an increase if you count manga sold in North America and manga is not part of western comics. Also, this is not parroting, it's drawing basic conclusions and using your brain. If quality is "extremely high" then why are DC and Marvel comics making less money each year? Then why are back issues of 60's/70's/80's and 90's comics selling more and more each year? Why are creatives complaining about being underpaid? Why have so many comicbookshops closed down over the last 5 to 6 years? Why is manga vastly outselling American comics?
