  • Shortly after Spring Uprising Extinction Rebellion met with two monastics from Plum Village, the home and practice centre of peace-activist Thich Naht Hanh. Sister True Dedication and Brother Spirit share in this conversation how mindful awareness can give us the energy we need for truly regenerative action.
Extinction Rebellion is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse.

I love the reminder about how the work is not just in the demonstration or the protest... it is also possible to do the work, just by walking in freedom on your way to whatever it is you're doing. Also: plants, in nature, don't bloom year round. They have seasons of creativity and productivity, and seasons of rest and regeneration.

Our monastics at the coal face of climate change. Holding up Thay's teaching as a guiding light. Governments need this education. Brother and Sister your sincerity and wisdom glowed steadily throughout the background noise.

I am listening to this conversation just as XR are working to another big event in London starting on April 21st. I have recently joined the online Plum village community and begun to learn about deep mindfulness. Seeing Sister True CDedication and Brother spirit were supporting our movement in 2019 is so heartening. a very helpful conversation. thankyou

This is so helpful, and riveting!!! to listen to. Their examples are both simple and complex, profound, and the mundanity of everyday life. And their way of being, these two individuals' easy, nonverbal control and comfortable poise, is inspiring in and of itself. Thanks for sharing this.

What a lovely way to see the body, as a garden with flowers and plants. Knowing which one I want to grow and and which which flowers to compost. Dear friends thank you

Thank you for posting this beautiful and nourishing interview! Such important insights about the energy of mindfulness, about dealing with burnout and difficult emotions, about the need to connect to nature and the power of understanding the science of deep time and our connection to the cosmos & about interconnection and interdependence (what we in Novasutras discuss as agaya and ubuntu). Blessings of ubuntu and agaya to all the beautiful activists of XR!

Thank you. I hope this movement spreads to every corner of the world. Brazil, for example, is in desperate need of help. The country has people willing to destroy nature and kill indigenous people indiscriminately. And with the support of the new far right government.

just need to share this here: there is so much of the mainstream of world populace who feel so very, probably, outside of, if not alienated, from all the 'positivity and joy' of this XR activism.
I myself used to be one who operated in the same way, but life has brought much damage to my inner being and so 'Joy' has left the repertoire of my experience, and am hanging on to the positivity. So I have definitely been feeling unable to feel part of this XR movement. I fail to see reason to be so very cheerful in the face of all the evil in this world.

Krishnamurti rightly said: "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society". There are many layers to this understanding... Of course it seems proposterous to cultivate positivity and joy in a collapsing world, but what's the use of cultivating powerlessness and sorrow either? From a body perspective, it triggers sickness. From an emotional perspective, it triggers depression. From a spiritual perspective, looking for inner peace in outter chaos seems the only way of out of the downward spiral. It doesn't mean to be well adjusted, you can still stand against evil, but your main drive, your core spine, is inner peace instead of inner agitation. That makes your actions more focus too.

The movement is so draining as Alex found. To reimagine when we have no template will need the transcendent. It is easy to see the faults in the old systems, its another thing to imagine a new.

Anger, hatred, and greed are three poisons that should be renounced if pursuing peace. One benefit of practicing mindful awareness, among other things, allows the practitioner to see through the illusion of Mara … to see the truth. We create the world we live in by the thoughts we give our attention to and the actions we generate. Happy thoughts = happy life. Monkey Mind thoughts = suffering. Everything conceived by Man breaks-down with stress. Everything made by Nature grows stronger with stress but is still subject to impermanence. We are all born-free and Nature Made, therefore we grow stronger with stress. Karma rewards wisdom and punishes ignorance. Karma is corrective and guides us towards the Middle Way.
Evil Incorporated creates suffering for all involved by their schemes and rackets (including their patrons) because their only purpose for existence is profit. Evil Inc is deluded by promises of infinitely expanding profits in a Nature Made world that operates through cycles of expansion AND contraction. Karma brings all things to balance and Evil Incorporated (and their government equivalent we call Team Dark) are not immune to Karma’s sudden wisdom. We are not only subjects of Karma, but also the executers! May we be as just, as compassionate, and as light hearted as we would like to see in return.

"Self-care is not selfish. One cannot serve from a broken plate."
"What do I need now, is a self-care mantra, that answers your needs."
"I have a physical body, a mental body, an emotional body, & an external body. Attend to that which needs strengthening. Adding strength to one, adds strength to all."
"Our minds, emotions & culture, think we can consume & do anything, anytime... but Mother Nature, & our bodies, say
otherwise." "While I can't control everything in life, I can control what I put into my body, and into the body of my life." "Consume with discretion. Create with discretion. Command & collectedness follows."
"The quality and balance of our connections to all (food, environment, family, community, work, faith, etc.) determines our health (/spirit). Reflect on and adjust to, what's diminished, or out of balance."
    "As within, so without: self-care = other-care; self-understanding = other-understandng; self-growth = outer-growth; self-harmony = outer-harmony. Divine & boundless is the journey of the self. In deed, and indeed, self-care is a gift, unwrapped & boundless."

“Love is the will to extend one’s self for the purpose of nurturing one’s own or another’s spiritual growth.” ~ Scott Peck
"Courage is the measure of our heartfelt participation with life, with another, with a community, a work; a future. To be courageous is not necessarily to go anywhere or do anything except to make conscious those things we already feel deeply and then to live through the unending vulnerabilities of those consequences." ~ David Whyte
"The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us the less taste we shall have for the destruction of our race. Wonder and humility are wholesome emotions, and they do not exist side by side with a lust for destruction." ~ Rachel Carson
"Whatever lessens suffering in yourself and others, that is right. Whatever increases suffering, that is wrong. The answer is within you. When you are free of pride and prejudice, when you are calm and attentive, a light will shine within you. Through meditation and through being mindful you will find your own knowledge of rightness. You will be your own light." ~ Satish Kumar
“It is probable that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community, a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. This may be the most important thing we can do for the survival of the earth.” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
"The great vision of Black Elk foretells of the many circles, circles embracing circles; the mending of the great hoop. Let us all come together and mend all the broken hoops of the world." ~ Dakota Grandmother
"There is no more powerful motivation than to feel we’re being used in the creation of a world where love has healed all wounds. We are no longer ambitious for ourselves, but are rather inspired by the vision of a healed world. Inspiration rearranges our energies. It sources within us a new power and direction." ~ Marianne Williamson
"So, I love you because the entire universe conspired to help me find you." ~ Paulo Coelho
"What now? What now, would the ultimate - in love be? Would it not be, to do what you can, so others can live, what you've come to love? Would it not be?" ~ Paul Jung
