Well, They have a good ground, because that light kept on blinking on the top. Awesome Video. Perfect example of what happens when you are the tallest thing in the area for a thunderstorm.

I had rented a cabin on the brow in Mentone Al several years back. Late one of those evenings, a thunderstorm developed just north of the mountain and lasted for a couple of hours. There from the back porch deck overlooking the brow I got to see the storm at or below eye level from 1/4 mile to about 2 miles out. Each strike completely lit up the valley below for miles. Coolest thing I have ever seen...

I believe u......Some people say lighting never strikes twice in the same place but I myself have seen in strike more than 4 times when I was watching it on my front porch one summer.

That's so crazy man!! I know they put precautionary designs in place for this type thing when they construct these towers, but still makes you wonder how that doesn't completely destroy that tower and all the components it hosts....
    Great vid!

if the positive charges on the ground are strong enough, the static from the storm can actually draw the current upwards before connecting to a negative charge in the storm, and so lightning occasionally appears to come from the ground in particularly violent storms like this one :)

Channel 3 and Channel 6 towers on Seymour Highway. Always amazed how one strike triggers multiple others. The one that goes down past the top and then loops up is awesome. Back in the late 1970 s a bolt hit the side of channel 6 tower and set the fiberglass dome on KLUR antenna on fire. I was one of the engineers that had to climb up there to try to put it out!

Was that before the enormous tornado on Black Tuesday in 1979 or after?

  • @johnbates4319
    @johnbates4319 8 років тому

    1977....two years before "Terrible Tuesday"....(April 10,1979).
KLUR's transmitter was located at the base of KAUZ-TV tower. They had a (9 bay) "batwing" type antenna side mounted at about 1000 ft.

Lightning does not have a lot of distinct changes in noise. A thunderstorm recorded a year ago could sound identical to a thunderstorm that occurs tomorrow. Therefore, is tomorrow's storm real, or just replay sound?

  • @Cchrisbud813

It depends on how close you are to the lightning. The farther away you are, the longer it takes to hear the thunder (because sound travels slower than light). If you're within about 300 feet of lightning, then you'll hear the thunder at the exact same time as when you see the lightning.

I think someone's found a way to harness and store lightning's energy. A strategically bent coat hanger at the very top did the trick.
Some mad genius in Wichita Falls has:
1.) A very fast electric car, or
2.) A Delorean that requires 1.21 Gigawatts (they can't wait to go on vacation), or
3.) No electric bills to worry about, OR
    4.) All of the above
